Verma looks to stop deferment of BCCI AGM

Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the IPL corruption case has written to relevant authorities asking them to prevent the BCCI from postponing its annual general meeting

Amol Karhadkar06-Sep-2014Aditya Verma, the secretary of the Cricket Association of Bihar and the petitioner in the IPL corruption case, has requested relevant authorities, like the Inspector General of Registration, Tamil Nadu, to stop the BCCI from postponing its annual general meeting (AGM).The BCCI elections, which are scheduled to be held during the AGM, need to be conducted before September 30, according to the board’s constitution rules. Doubts over the AGM emerged after a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court rejected Srinivasan’s appeal to be reinstated as BCCI president, which would have allowed him to chair the AGM and likely stand for a third term as BCCI president. The Court also approved a two-month extension to the Mudgal Committee’s probe into corruption during last year’s IPL and said Srinivasan could not be reinstated in keeping with an earlier order from the court which had said that he could resume office only at the end of the IPL investigation.Since the BCCI is registered as a not-for-profit organisation in Tamil Nadu under the Society Registration Act, its AGM cannot be postponed without prior approval of the Registrar.Verma has, therefore, filed a submission to the Inspector General of Registration in the Tamil Nadu government requesting the Registrar that the AGM should not be deferred. In his submission, Verma stated: “… It is anticipated that from your end the endeavour certainly will be in favour so that scheduled meeting of AGM be held in time in the interest and integrity of BCCI.”The BCCI is also set to approach the Registrar of Tamil Nadu for extending the AGM in the midst of the prevailing conundrum and is likely to buy more time to convene the AGM on grounds of non-completion of annual accounts. An informal meeting on Sunday could also decide whether the BCCI will look to convene or delay the meeting.Verma, in his plea, has cited that “for the past 86 years there is not even a single instance” of the BCCI having postponed the AGM.In 2004, the AGM was convened and then adjourned for three weeks with Sharad Pawar and Ranbir Singh Mahendra, Jagmohan Dalmiya’s proxy candidate, were engaged in a close battle for the BCCI presidency.

Tredwell prepared for another onslaught

With short, straight boundaries and an Australia side with the bit between their teeth James Tredwell is ready to face another onslaught when he is given the ball at the SWALEC Stadium on Saturday.

Andrew McGlashan13-Sep-2013With short, straight boundaries and an Australia side with the bit between their teeth James Tredwell is ready to face another onslaught when he is given the ball at the SWALEC Stadium on Saturday.England have only bowled once during this series, when they conceded 315 at Old Trafford, and the innings was notable for how Australia targeted Tredwell whose eight overs cost 60 for the reward of one wicket. The new-look England team, with Ben Stokes as the third seamer, adds greater onus on Tredwell and the way he was attacked by Australia’s top order in Manchester put huge pressure on Eoin Morgan. But one tough day in the field is not going to knock Tredwell off his stride after an outstanding Champions Trophy where he ensured Graeme Swann’s various absences through injury were barely noticed. It could even be argued that Tredwell has done enough over the last 12 months to be considered England’s No. 1 one-day spinner.”It seemed to be as soon as I came on they were gunning for me,” he said. “They came pretty hard in that game, pretty much a plan by the looks of it. On another day, it might have been 3 for 20 after those four overs. When they come hard like that, it obviously gives me a chance to take wickets as well. The other day, they came off. I hope it will be my day at some stage in this series. Certainly one end here is pretty short. I’ll stay away from that one.”That phlegmatic attitude to his lot as a spinner in the modern one-day game – highlighting the advantage of picking experienced domestic cricketers – helps Tredwell to overcome his difficult days.”You tend to get hit for a few sixes. You’ve got to take that on the chin, put that behind you and try to beat them the next time – that’s the way I look at it. Sometimes it’s horrible, depending on who’s at the other end. But if someone is taking a chance, then it’s giving you one.”And if there was a major one-day final on the horizon, with Swann fit and available, is there now a serious question for the selectors to answer? “I’d like to think my name would be in the hat. I think I’ve put in the performances to be there or thereabouts. The decision wouldn’t be mine. I think I’ve done pretty well over the last little period. I need to keep that going.”Although Andy Flower has said Monty Panesar will be considered for the Ashes tour despite his troubled end to the season, if it is decided that he cannot be taken on the trip Tredwell could yet be the second spinner behind Swann. Simon Kerrigan’s horrid debut at The Oval is likely to have ruled him out – although a Lions spot should allow him to continue his development – while there are few other realistic options around the county game.”It’s always nice to be around the environment, and if you do the right things you can put your name in the ring,” Tredwell said. “”The last 12 months have been fantastic for me in this form of the game, and I just want that to continue. But it’s a totally different form of the game, so that’s out of my hands really. It’s evident for all to see there are opportunities available, and you just try to do your best and hope your name gets picked out.”

All-round Asalanka downs Bangladesh

Charith Asalanka starred with bat and ball as Sri Lanka Under-19s comfortably beat Bangladesh Under-19s in the first of the five Youth ODIs played in Colombo

ScorecardCharith Asalanka starred with bat and ball as Sri Lanka Under-19s comfortably beat Bangladesh Under-19s in the first of the five Youth ODIs played in Colombo. His 4 for 36 was instrumental in restricting Bangladesh to 202 after the visitors had opted to bat, then he followed it up with 63 as Sri Lanka cruised to the target with 5.4 overs to spare.Bangladesh started poorly. When Asalanka dismissed Zakir Hasan in the 18th over, Bangladesh were 51 for 3. An 80-run stand between Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mehedy Hasan helped Bangladesh recover, but two quick wickets in the 35th and the 37th overs hampered their progress. Nazmul was stumped in the 40th over, bowled by Asalanka, and Bangladesh were later bowled out in the 50th over.Sri Lanka’s brisk start to the chase suffered a minor jolt in the seventh over when opener Kaveen Bandara was run out but Asalanka and Lasith Lakshan added 124 for the second wicket to thwart Bangladesh bowlers. Although Lakshan (71 off 107) and Asalanka were dismissed within the space of 12 balls, Sri Lanka were untroubled.

Sussex hit by Wernars' withdrawal

Kirk Wernars has announced he is to take a break from cricket and will not be available for Sussex for the 2013 season

George Dobell12-Mar-2013Kirk Wernars has announced he is to take a break from cricket and will not be available for Sussex for the 2013 season. The 21-year-old allrounder, who joined Sussex in 2011 and signed a new contract at the end of last season, is to take a year’s break from the game and will return to his native South Africa to explore career possibilities in wildfire fighting and the emergency services.”This has not been an overnight decision and has been a very tough one to make,” Wernars said. “The past two years at Sussex have been a fantastic experience for me, both as a person and a cricketer. I have learnt so much from being here and will take a lot away with me, from every person that I have come into contact with at the club.”As much as playing cricket for Sussex has been an exciting and happy time for me, there have been parts of my life I have missed, namely being with my family and living in Cape Town.”I believe I need to take a break from cricket for a year, during which time I wish to explore wildfire fighting and emergency services. Thereafter I hope to be in a position to have greater clarity about the long-term career I would like to pursue.””We’re really disappointed to lose Kirk both as a cricketer and as a person,” Mark Robinson, Sussex’s professional cricket manager, said. “As a cricketer, he really made great strides and had every chance of having a really successful summer. And as a person, he was a man of high values and high loyalty.”We do though really respect his decision to want to be nearer his family again and we wish him every success, and hope perhaps to see him at some time in the future.”Wernars only played two Championship and five CB40 games for Sussex in 2012 and he did not feature in the FLt20 side but, by the end of the season, he had forced his way into the Championship and List A teams. He had previously represented Western Province and South Africa Under-19 but qualified to play for Sussex as a non-overseas player due to a Dutch passport.

Gloucestershire fall short in chase

Leicestershire’s bowlers held their nerve to deny Gloucestershire victory on a thrilling final day

21-Jul-2012
ScorecardLeicestershire’s bowlers held their nerve to deny Gloucestershire victory on a thrilling final day. Set 222 to win in 53 overs, the hosts faltered badly at the death, finishing 13 runs short of their target.Gloucestershire looked to be favourites after half-centuries from skipper Alex Gidman and Dan Housego but, needing 47 off the final 10 overs, they lost four quick wickets before putting up the shutters and settling for the draw. Leicestershire were indebted to veteran South African spinner Claude Henderson, who bowled unchanged from the Chapel End after tea to return figures of 4 for 80 and undermine the chase.Gloucestershire were well and truly in the hunt after Gidman smashed 62 from 55 balls in a stand of 94 in 18 overs with Housego, who made exactly 50. Gidman was brilliantly caught by Ned Eckersley at short midwicket off Henderson and Housego followed him back to the pavilion soon afterwards, caught at the wicket fending at a rising delivery from Robbie Joseph, who claimed 3 for 36.Joseph then removed Hamish Marshall and Ian Cockbain in quick succession, while the wily Henderson accounted for Ed Young and Ian Saxelby to halt Gloucestershire in their tracks. Rather than risk defeat, the ninth-wicket pair of James Fuller and David Payne played out the last three overs with a minimum of risk.Resuming their second innings on 142 for 5 – just 75 ahead – bottom-of-the-table Leicestershire were under pressure from the outset on a two-paced pitch that was offering assistance to spin. But any thoughts Gloucestershire might have had of achieving a quick and decisive victory were dispelled by Ramnaresh Sarwan and Matt Boyce, who staged a restorative stand of 83 for the sixth wicket.Gloucestershire were becoming frustrated when they were gifted a much-needed breakthrough in unexpected fashion, Boyce being run out for 23 by Benny Howell’s throw from deep midwicket following a farcical mix-up.Sarwan still stood between the home side and a third Championship win of the summer and Gidman, Gloucestershire’s captain, played his trump card in a bid to remove the former West Indies batsman, throwing the ball to occasional bowler Howell. The ploy paid almost instantaneous dividends, Howell’s medium pace inducing Sarwan to offer a catch to Housego at extra cover via a leading edge. When Paul Dixey was pinned on the front foot by paceman Fuller in the last over before lunch, Leicestershire were 240 for 8 and Gloucestershire were clearly fancying their chances.Wayne White and Henderson offered up further defiance in a gritty ninth-wicket partnership of 48 but the new ball did for them both. Saxelby located White’s outside edge and Cockbain held on at second slip, while Liam Norwell wrapped up proceedings in the very next over, clean bowling Henderson with a ball that jagged back. But, by then, they had done enough.

Injury forces Darren Bravo home

Darren Bravo, the West Indies’ batsman, has returned home following the groin strain which he picked up during the first one-day international

Nagraj Gollapudi at The Oval18-Jun-2012Darren Bravo, the West Indies’ batsman, has returned home following the groin strain which he picked up during the first one-day international. Meanwhile, there remain doubts over the fitness of Chris Gayle, who was sent for a scan on his leg injury although was later said to be available for selection, while Andre Russell also missed training at The Oval.Gayle had picked up a stress reaction in the tibia bone of his left leg during the warm-up match last Wednesday against Middlesex at Lord’s, while Russell injured his left shoulder in the defeat at West End on Saturday. It is understood that in Gayle’s case, the West Indies physio CJ Clark just wanted a scan to allay any further fears and the batsman is expected to take field on Tuesday, but the situation could change if the scans reveal anything untoward. In the absence of Bravo, West Indies will hope Gayle returns strengthen the top order following the heavy 114-run defeat in the opening match. With the updated ICC regulations not allowing a runner, Bravo walked in at No. 9 in the first ODI and could barely run as he managed 8 towards the end of the match. He was the second West Indies player to pick an injury during the game as Russell later slipped while turning for a second run early in his innings. Russell had already had a forgetful day going wicketless in his six expensive overs which went for 43 runs.During the Test series Shannon Gabriel (back) and Kemar Roach (shin) were forced out of the tour.

Confusion reigns over Ramdin's T&T captaincy

Despite reassurances offered by Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board that he has not been sacked, Denesh Ramdin, has reiterated that he was told he would be replaced as T&T captain

Nagraj Gollapudi07-Nov-2014Despite reassurances offered by Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board that he has not been sacked, Denesh Ramdin has reiterated that he was told he would be replaced as T&T captain. He insisted that he was being “punished” for supporting the move by West Indies players to abandon the India tour last month. Ramdin said that the TTCB move was a “breach” of the agreement reached last week between the players, WICB and West Indies Players’ Association, where it was decided to set up a three-member task force to negotiate a deal between the three groups.Ramdin, the West Indies Test captain, said n a public statement issued on Thursday that things had been made “unnecessarily difficult and uncertain” for him since his return from India. Now Denesh Ramdin is sparring with the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board•Caribbean Premier League”I feel compelled to state that on my return from India I was restricted from attendance at a practice session with the Trinidad and Tobago team on Thursday, October 30, 2014,” Ramdin said. “Although I felt hurt and embarrassed, I knew that I should remain committed to my responsibilities.”Ramdin’s latest response is a direct contradiction to TTCB president Azim Bassarath confirmation to ESPNcricinfo on Wednesday that Ramdin remained the T&T captain. Bassarath also said that a decision over whether to replace him as captain for the regional competitions, one of the recommendations made by the selectors, would be taken at the board’s meeting this weekend. On Monday Ramdin met with Bassarath and executives of TTCB including Suraj Ragoonath (CEO), Arjoon Ramlal (secretary), Sukesh Maniam (treasurer), Patrick Rampersad (third vice-president) and Gus Logie (T&T coach). The meeting took place at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva in Trinidad where Ramdin said he was told Rayad Emrit would be his successor.”On Monday, November 3, 2014, I attended a meeting with the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board. At that meeting, I was told that since I did not demonstrate proper leadership in relation to the tour in India, I would be relieved of the captaincy and would be replaced by Rayad Emrit. I understood this to be a punishment contrary to the undertaking given by the WICB at the meeting on Friday, October 31, 2014.”I am also advised that this action is a breach of my rights having regard to the fact that the Task Force appointed by the WICB has not made any findings and has made no findings of misconduct against me,” Ramdin said. Both Bassarath and Rampersad had explained that since Ramdin was likely to be busy playing for West Indies in various international series between October and the World Cup which ends in March, the selectors had recommended that a new captain be appointed. Both men insisted a final decision on Ramdin’s future as T&T captain would be taken at the TTCB executive meeting this weekend, though a media release on the board’s website indicated otherwise.Titled “Heavy WI schedule rules Ramdin out”, the release said: “The unavailability of Denesh Ramdin for selection for nearly all of the 2014-2015 regional cricket season was the deciding factor in the decision to appoint a new national team captain. And Ramdin, the West Indies Test team captain who was among the players who recently pulled out of a tour of India, was told this at a meeting on Monday with officials of the T&T Cricket Board.”Ramdin pointed out that on October 31 he along with fellow Trinidadian and West Indies ODI captain Dwayne Bravo along with their legal counsel attended a meeting with WICB president Dave Cameron, and Emmanuel Nanthan (vice-president) and one of the WCIB directors Baldath Mahabir, who also sits on the TTCB executive board. WIPA president Wavell Hinds participated in that meeting via Skype. Also present were the Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada. “At that meeting, the WICB gave an undertaking that the WICB would not in its selection policy victimise nor discriminate against any player who had gone on the tour to India,” Ramdin said.”I have been advised that it is improper for me to speak on the issue of the recent tour to India and that I must defer to the authority and deliberations of the Task Force appointed by the WICB to inquire into that tour. However, I wish to state that the circumstances that I have endured since my return to the Caribbean have been made unnecessarily difficult and uncertain,” Ramdin said.In a release issued on Tuesday the WICB listed what it called “updates” from the various meetings between the board of directors on October 30 and November 4. It stated that Michael Gordon QC would be chairman of the task force along with former West Indies fast bowler Wes Hall and Dennis Lalor. The WICB directors also decided after a conference call today to finalise the date next week to pick the squads for the South Africa tour, which starts in December.

Sangakkara, Russell power Jamaica into final

A controlled chase, followed by a merciless onslaught from Andre Russell, helped Jamaica Tallawahs beat Barbados Tridents by seven wickets in the second semi-final of the Caribbean Premier League

They will now play Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final on Saturday.Kumar Sangakkara, playing his first game for Jamaica, anchored the 149-run chase with a measured 50 not out, after the side lost captain Chris Gayle in the fourth over with just 16 runs on the board. The Sri Lanka batsman was involved in two crucial partnerships – the first a 71-run, second-wicket stand with Chadwick Walton, followed by a 30-run stand with Danza Hyatt, where Sangakkara kept pace with the scoring rate, even as his partner struggled to an 18-ball 12.Hyatt brought his labored innings to an end with a heave to long on into the hands of Barbados captain, Kieron Pollard. That brought Andre Russell to the crease. Jamaica needed 32 from 20 and the bowling side had an even chance of winning the game. What followed, however, was pure mayhem from Barbados’ point of view.Sangakkara and Russell needed just 11 balls to race past the target. Russell faced six of those and, in a fearsome batting display, ended up scoring 4, 1, 6, 6, 6, 6 off the six deliveries.Earlier, Barbados, who were put in to bat, put together a challenging total in spite of an indifferent start. David Bernard had Dwayne Smith trapped leg before at the start of the second over and Vernon Philander dismissed Jason Holder, promoted to No. 3, in the next over.Raymon Reifer and Shoaib Malik then added 102 runs for the third wicket, the first hundred-run stand in the CPL. Malik used his feet to play Jamaica’s spinners, stepping down the track to hit two sixes off Muttiah Muralitharan and Nikita Miller early on. Reifer, who had a slow start, gained confidence gradually and began playing his shots. The pair, however, were out off successive deliveries in the 17th over, bowled by Chris Gayle.Kieron Pollard and Azhar Mahmood hit some quick runs towards the end to help Barbados post a challenging total of 148 for 6.

Mascarenhas cements Hampshire's top spot

Dimitri Mascarenhas took three early wickets as Hampshire strengthened theirgrip at the top of the Friends Life t20 South Group, with their tenth win in 13matches

Dimitri Mascarenhas took three early wickets as Hampshire strengthened their grip at the top of the Friends Life t20 South Group with their tenth win in 13 matches. Two stoppages for rain reduced Essex’s target, but they failed by nine runs, leaving Hampshire in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals as group toppers.Mascarenhas took his tally for the competition to 15 for the season by dismissing Adam Wheater and Tim Southee in his first over and then Mark Pettini in his third. The Essex chase never fully recovered although Owais Shah and Ravi Bopara attempted a recovery with a stand of 55 for the fourth wicket. Shah struck four fours and a six off Shahid Afridi in a knock of 38 of 34 balls, but it was not enough. When Essex came back out after a second rain stoppage they required 56 from five overs and soon lost Ryan ten Doeschate, before Bopara perished going for a big hit at 109. Bopara made 48, his side’s top score, but was stumped down the leg side off Afridi and with him went Essex’s last hope of salvaging a surprise win.Hampshire, after choosing to bat, made a competitive 151 for seven from their 20 overs. Key to their success was a stand of 85 for the fourth wicket between James Vince and Sean Ervine. Vince, the match’s top-scorer, made 55 from 46 balls in an innings that included six boundaries before he was lbw to Phillips in the 16th over with the total on 117.Ervine’s contribution was almost as valuable, striking 45 from 35 balls. He was the third victim of the innings for Southee, who finished with creditable figures of 3 for 30 from his four overs, while the all-important wicket of the dangerous Afridi went to Bopara. Afridi made only four before he lofted Bopara to Pettini.Essex, though, were always struggling once Mascarenhas made early inroads that left them 18 for three, and never looked like keeping up with the required-rate.
