Newcastle make Matthias Ginter move

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s interest in Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter…

What’s the talk?

According to Calciomercato, the Magpies have made a move to snap him up in the January transfer window to stop Inter from signing him on a free transfer.

The report claims that the Italian champions want to land him for nothing at the end of the season, but Newcastle have now put a plan in place to win the race for his signature.

Imagine him & Lascelles

Eddie Howe could form a solid defensive unit by landing Ginter as he could play alongside captain Jamaal Lascelles in the Premier League.

Newcastle’s struggles have been there for all to see in the top flight this season, as they sit 19th with one win on the board after 15 matches. They have kept a solitary clean sheet and are conceding two goals per game on average, highlighting their need for defensive reinforcements in January.

Ginter has proven his class in Germany and could be an ideal target to come in and bolster the backline in an attempt to improve the Magpies’ defensive record.

The £50k-per-week beast has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.98 in the Bundesliga this term, winning 66% of his duels overall. This is after he averaged a score of 7.11 last season, winning 68% of his individual battles and making 3.5 clearances per game.

German icon Lothar Matthaus previously compared him to Spanish international Sergio Ramos as he lauded his leadership abilities at the back. The former Bayern Munich stalwart told Sport Bild, via Bundesliga.com: “Ginter has become a leader at the back, in a similar way to Ramos at Real. He doesn’t just give instructions to his teammates, but leads them as well. That’s what Ginter is doing really well at the moment. He reminds me of Ramos.”

Lascelles has been one of Newcastle’s better performers this season, with an average SofaScore rating of 6.81 in the Premier League. The 28-year-old has won 65% of his duels and has made six clearances per game, suggesting that he is putting in solid shifts at the back and being let down by his teammates.

Therefore, partnering him with the reliable Ginter could make for a strong defensive pairing and increase Newcastle’s chances of keeping the ball out of Martin Dubravka’s net. It is now down to PIF and Howe to ensure that they can get a deal over the line for the Germany international…

Gayle sets sights on drawn series

Brydon Coverdale in Perth 15-Dec-2009Chris Gayle hasn’t seen much success in West Indies cricket in recent years. They have won three of their past 41 Tests; by comparison, Australia have triumphed in 25 of their past 41 matches. The chasm between the two teams in the past few seasons has been enormous. That’s why, with one Test remaining on this tour, West Indies would value a drawn series as a win.To achieve that, they must build on the progress they made in Adelaide, where they had the better of the draw. The outcome meant that as the reigning holders of the Frank Worrell Trophy, Australia retained the prize but on the eve of the third Test in Perth, Gayle jokingly said that a West Indies victory would be so important that his men would deserve the trophy.”Getting a one-all result, that would be great, it would be fantastic,” Gayle said. “Australia will still hold the trophy, but if it do happen, they should give us a trophy. I think we’ll actually deserve it if we win this Test match, we’re looking forward to it and if that do happen they should hand it to us.”Gayle’s wide smile confirmed that he was being tongue-in-cheek but having been involved in so many low points for his team over the past few years, he no doubt felt that such a result would be a cause for major celebration. Adding to his optimism was the fact that Australia will be without Peter Siddle and potentially Nathan Hauritz, and will have one or two debutants in their attack.Although those changes could make Australia more exposed, West Indies are also facing up to the likelihood that Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Adrian Barath won’t play due to injuries. Gayle knows that much will depend on how his own bowlers challenge Australia’s batsmen, who he believes are in form without being invulnerable.”It’s cricket, anything can happen on any given day, it doesn’t matter what sort of team you have out there, they can still crumble,” he said. “Once you get it right definitely we can put a bit of pressure on them, and we’ll see what happens when the pressure is out there. It can be a totally different ball game.”Gayle has spoken to his fastest bowler, Kemar Roach, about the need to convert his good bowling into bigger bags of wickets. The Perth conditions might suit Roach’s speed and Gayle was confident West Indies’ young fast men would not be lured into bowling too short, simply because of the WACA’s reputation for sharp bounce.”You can’t get carried away when you come into these situations,” Gayle said. “They’re keen and they’re getting to know their game a bit more, so I’m sure they will understand to go out there and assess the conditions as quickly as possible, and then work on the team point of view.”It’s still unclear just how much pace and carry the WACA surface will have. The Perth Test pitches over the past couple of years have drawn criticism from Ricky Ponting, who wants to see a return to the trademark fast-bowling paradise of the 1970s and 1980s. The curator Cam Sutherland has prepared a pitch that has barely been used before and on the day before the Test, Ponting was cautiously optimistic.”The weather’s been quite warm here so I’d imagine by tomorrow morning it’ll be quite hard on top with a reasonable cover of grass,” Ponting said. “That normally indicates good pace and bounce in Perth, so we’ll wait and see how the game starts. All reports from the state players are that it’s been quite quick and bouncy.”While West Indies are hoping for a 1-1 result, Australia can answer some of the criticism after the Adelaide draw if they can secure a 2-0 series win. The task has been made harder with the absence of Siddle and the inclusion of the debutant Clint McKay, but Ponting was confident he had the men to deliver Australia’s first Test victory at the WACA in three seasons.”Clint, who’s only been playing first-class cricket for a couple of years, will have played a few games here and know the right way to bowl here,” Ponting said. “Dougie [Bollinger] has had good success here only a couple of weeks ago, taking eight wickets [in a Sheffield Shield game].”Although some of the guys are relatively inexperienced at Test level they’ve all played a fair share of cricket here and should know how to adapt and adjust to these conditions. We know it is a place that fast bowlers can come and get a little bit carried away with things, with the way the ball carries and the bounce in the wicket but our guys should have a better and pretty good understanding of that.”One thing that is certain is that Australia won’t be handing over the Frank Worrell Trophy, regardless of the result. But West Indies have far more to gain than a piece of silverware.

West Ham fans in awe of Declan Rice update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have gone wild over an update on the future of midfield star Declan Rice.

The England international was at the centre of rumours linking him with a move away over the summer after he rejected two contract offers, as per reliable reports from The Evening Standard and The Guardian.

Rice has also been attracting attention from some of the Premier League’s top clubs, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City all linked (90min).

Putting his future to one side, the 22-year-old continues to dazzle in claret and blue this season and has been an untouchable in manager David Moyes starting XI, featuring in every English top flight match so far in 2021/22 (WhoScored).

He has also averaged a higher pass accuracy (91.7%) than any Irons player with more than one league start, whilst making the most interceptions per 90 in that time (WhoScored).

A colossal presence, it’s little wonder that so many fans are eager to keep hold of him, and there has been an encouraging development.

According to The Sun, West Ham ‘want to build their future’ around Rice and see him as a key symbol of what the club represents. Their determination to do so means that they’re not interested in any sale, even if a bid came in for as much as £100m.

Even though the West Ham star has rejected two new contract offers this year, neither the Hammers nor Rice are in any rush to tie up fresh terms, and talks are apparently ongoing.

Flocking to this news, it’s safe to say that many Irons supporters have gone wild with delight, with one even calling it the ‘best possible’ development.

Tuchel rules out Gallagher recall

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says the club have no intention to recall Conor Gallagher from his loan at Crystal Palace in January.

The lowdown

Gallagher has arguably been Palace’s standout player since he made the temporary move across London during the summer transfer window.

In 10 appearances, he’s scored a joint-team high four goals and provided two assists.

His average WhoScored rating of 7.5/10 is comfortably the highest in the Eagles’ ranks, with Christian Benteke the next best at 6.96.

His form hasn’t gone unnoticed at international level, with Gareth Southgate handing him a senior England debut in the 10-0 midweek rout of San Marino.

Pundits, like former Palace striker Ian Wright, have already begun to ponder his future at Stamford Bridge.

He says Chelsea simply ‘can’t ignore him’ on the back of his ‘unbelievable’ displays, while Joe Cole insists the Blues won’t make the ‘silly’ mistake of selling him.

The latest

Addressing the press ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Leicester City, Tuchel explained that remaining at Palace until the end of the season was best for Gallagher’s development.

And he also revealed that they’ll sit down with Gallagher in the summer to discuss his ‘goals’.

“I have not thought about bringing him back earlier, because it’s also important for him to be happy where he is, to stay in the moment and not change the next things,” he said, as quoted by The Independent.

“It’s important to be calm in his stage of the career. And I feel him happy there and I think everybody is happy and it’s good he has this kind of impact at Palace and now it’s about consistency.

“He had a game with the national team and we have to process all these things. Right now if you asked me today I don’t think it’s necessary to change everything for him again in the winter.

“And it’s too early to talk about next season and way too early to talk about it in public, and before we talk about it with Conor himself, what he wants and what his goals are.

“That will happen in the summer, because we all agreed to the decision that he wanted to join Crystal Palace and Patrick Vieira’s team.”

The verdict

If Gallagher keeps up this form, Palace will surely dream of keeping him beyond the end of the current season?

But will Chelsea agree to part with their £13.5million-rated asset? It seems increasingly unlikely, but the player himself is apparently having reservations over whether he will actually get a chance at Stamford Bridge.

With that in mind, the Eagles would surely be wise to at least test the Blues resolve with a bid. Either way, the fact Tuchel has no plans to recall the midfield maestro should be music to Vieira’s ears as far as this campaign is concerned.

Newcastle manager news on Rangnick

A journalist has claimed that Ralf Rangnick and Paulo Fonseca are both now ‘out of the picture’ for the Newcastle United manager job.

The Lowdown: Manager hunt continues

The St. James’ Park faithful have been linked with a number of different managers to take over from Steve Bruce on a permanent basis, including most recently Lucien Favre and Rafa Benitez.

Fonseca had been heavily linked with the role, with reports even suggesting he was Amanda Staveley’s preferred candidate, but Craig Hope claimed this week the former Roma boss arriving looks unlikely.

While the hunt continues, Graeme Jones will remain in temporary charge in the North East for now.

The Latest: No Rangnick or Fonseca?

Speaking to BILD (via Sport Witness), Bundesliga journalist Christian Falk has claimed that both Rangnick and Fonseca are currently ‘out of the picture’ in terms of becoming the next coach on Tyneside.

However, he also added that they are still ‘candidates’, meaning that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium could still turn to them to fill the vacancy.

The Verdict: Not much between them

There is certainly not much between Rangnick and Fonseca, with the former having eight trophies to his name with three different clubs (Transfermarkt), while the latter boasts nine major honours.

They both have an attractive playing style, as Fonseca has been described as ‘similar’ to Chelsea and UEFA Champions League winning-boss Thomas Tuchel by his former player at Roma Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Football London), while Roma chief executive Tiago Pinto believes that he is an ‘international class‘ tactician.

Rangnick is famous for his team’s gegenpressing, an attack-minded tactic based on making chances by winning the ball back high up the pitch (ESPN), while Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claimed that he is ‘one of the best, if not the best German coach’ (ESPN), ahead of the likes of Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann.

Nonetheless, both would be excellent choices by the new owners, should they come back into the equation.

We mustn't try to force the pace – Strauss

Andrew Strauss has told his team to focus instead on wearing Australia down over the first three days

Peter English at The Oval19-Aug-2009Andrew Strauss has told his team to resist the urge to force the pace in their must-win encounter at The Oval and focus instead on wearing Australia down over the first three days. The sides start the fifth Test level at 1-1 on Thursday, but the tourists have the advantage of being able to lift the Ashes urn with a draw.”We know the situation ahead of us,” Strauss said. “We need to win the game, so in a way that helps your clarity of mind and you know what needs to be achieved.”The important thing about a Test match is that you can’t win on day one, you’ve got to earn the right to win the game and that means playing good, solid cricket for the first three days or so. So it’s not a case of particularly forcing the pace, it’s about wrestling the initiative away over the course of the first three days.”England were on a high during the middle of the series following their win at Lord’s and the draw at Edgbaston, but they gave up their advantage in Leeds and effectively start this game from behind. It is a position they are comfortable with after struggling to build on their lead when they are the frontrunners. The underdog scenario also reduces the expectation of their fans, the majority of whom feel their side’s chances disappeared in three Flintoff-less days at Headingley. “It’s a massive game and I know the country are desperate for us to do well and I just struggle not to be very excited about what lies ahead this week,” Strauss said. “It’s going to be a massive occasion and one that hopefully we’ll treasure for the rest of our careers.”Strauss was part of The Oval celebrations in 2005 but said he would feel a new emotion if they upset the tipsters to hold the game’s oldest prize on Monday. “It’s been a very different series this time,” he said. “Last time every game was very close, this time it’s been a little bit more see-sawing. From the situation we’re in now it would be a great achievement to turn it around and be able to win here this week, but it’s just hard to compare the two.”No matter what England do over the next couple of years, it will be the performances, good or bad, against Australia that will stand out. “You gain a huge amount of confidence from winning an Ashes series, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you go on and beat all the other teams in the world, as we capably demonstrated last time we won,” Strauss said. “Where we stand right at the moment it’s all about winning this Ashes series and, rightly or wrongly, players are remembered for what they did in Ashes series.”

Leeds: Kevin Campbell makes Raphinha prediction

Pundit Kevin Campbell believes Leeds United star Raphinha won’t be at the club next season, amid interest from Liverpool, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Brazil debut

The 24-year-old has starred in his first international stint with Brazil, providing two assists on his debut against Venezuela.

Raphinha is now poised to receive a full debut against Uruguay on Friday, and his displays for club and country have been catching the eye.

According to Football Insider, who were informed by an inside source on Wednesday, Raphinha is still on Liverpool’s radar following links last year.

The Latest: Campbell’s comments

Campbell, who features on Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider following Raphinha’s impressive Brazil display.

He believes that the Whites ace won’t be at Elland Road next season and tipped Leeds to cash in.

“His stock is rising all of the time.

“Let’s not forget, there was already some interest in him last summer.

“Whether you like it or not, Leeds are not where they were 20 years ago. They are not what they once were.

“If one of the big boys comes in for him, Leeds will sell. They will sell.

“I think it is just a matter of time. I cannot see him being a Leeds player at the beginning of next season. If he continues to perform like this he will be gone.”

The Verdict: In Leeds’ hands

Leeds have tended to complete most of their transfer business in the summer under Marcelo Bielsa, so you’d expect Raphinha to see out the current campaign at Elland Road.

At that point, he’ll have two years remaining on his contract, so the ball is certainly in Leeds’ court when it comes to the possibility of selling the winger.

If they receive an offer too good to refuse, then he might depart, and at this rate going off his 2021/22 performances, an eye-catching bid could be coming their way.

Nerveless Vettori and Elliott lead New Zealand to final

Grant Elliott and Daniel Vettori guided an amazingly thin batting line-up to a modest target

The Bulletin by Sidharth Monga03-Oct-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outGrant Elliott’s half-century took New Zealand to their first major final since the Champions Trophy in 2000•AFPGrant Elliott and Daniel Vettori guided an incredibly thin batting line-up, blighted by injuries, to a modest target which was made more difficult to achieve by the variety in Pakistan’s bowling attack. The New Zealand batsmen, who came out blazing at the start, made sure Pakistan never got back-to-back wickets, and the required run-rate never became too high for a well-timed batting Powerplay to redress. The five-wicket victory broke New Zealand’s semi-final hoodoo, both against Pakistan and in world events.Pakistan will rue two turning points, around the 40-over mark of each innings. In the first half of the day, after Pakistan’s top order had failed, the 19-year-old Umar Akmal fought back with a free-spirited and sensible half-century. But just when he would have looked to open up and take the batting Powerplay he became a part of a 32-for-5 collapse thanks to a rare ordinary call from Simon Taufel. During the chase, with the run-rate slowly creeping past seven, and the batsmen struggling to stay abreast, Younis Khan dropped a dolly at cover from Elliott. He was on 42 off 78 balls then, New Zealand required 69 from 64, and only one four and two sixes had been hit in the preceding 21 overs. That drop, off Mohammad Aamer, came during an extremely tight period when New Zealand scored only 13 runs off four overs. With 59 required off the last eight, Vettori and Elliott called for the Powerplay, and with 10 and 14 coming off its the first and third overs, the pressure evaporated. Before that there was pressure aplenty. Both Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill came with a clear brief: get as many as possible in the first two Powerplays, and then the run-rate will be easy to manage – 44 of the first 60 runs came in boundaries. In doing that, though, both McCullum and Guptill lost their wickets. And when debutant Aaron Redmond fell in the 17th over, with the score 71 and the ball starting to turn big, Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi seemed to be all over the batsmen.Prime Numbers1.83New Zealand’s win-loss ratio in Champions Trophy matches, which is second only to Australia’s 2.20.3Number of semi-final games New Zealand have won in ODI tournaments, out of 13. They’ve played Pakistan seven times in the semis, winning two and losing five.104The partnership between Grant Elliott and Daniel Vettori, which is only New Zealand’s tenth century stand for the fifth wicket in ODIs, and the second against Pakistan.35The number of runs Vettori had scored in nine previous ODI innings against Pakistan, at an average of 5.83. His highest was 9 not out.10The number of ODI innings Elliott had gone without a half-century before his 75 here. During that period he averaged only 21.66, well below his career average of 46.23.0.14Pakistan’s win-loss ratio in ODIs in Johannesburg. It’s the worst among the top teams. New Zealand, on the other hand, have won four out of four. 35The last-wicket partnership for Pakistan, which is the second-highest for the wicket for Pakistan against New Zealand. The highest is 39, between Mohammad Sami and Shoaib Akhtar in Napier in 2004, in a match Pakistan lost by eight wickets. The umpires, Ian Gould and Taufel, were put through a stern test too, with lots of lbw appeals from the spinners and the fast bowlers using the bouncer well, often bordering on being wide. Like the New Zealand batsmen, they handled a charged Pakistan side well. From 71 for 3, when Ross Taylor and Elliott looked to blunt the spinners, Younis turned to Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, who started getting the ball to reverse dangerously. Taylor followed the Virender Sehwag route, and hit Afridi out of the ground, disposing of the reversing ball. The new ball, though, immediately accounted for Taylor, who played for the non-existent turn and was bowled. At 126 for 4 in 29.5 overs, New Zealand sprung a surprise. Vettori, who had taken 3 for 43 earlier, leapfrogged Neil Broom and James Franklin in the batting order. He guided the chase along with an equally cool Elliott, who had passed a last-minute fitness Test for a hand injury sustained in the previous game. Elliott hardly played a forceful shot until the batting Powerplay was taken. He just kept nurdling and bunting around for singles and twos until it became absolutely necessary to attack. His first boundary came off the 68th ball he faced, to move on to 38.Then came the dropped chance, and then the Powerplay. Vettori opened up first during the restrictions, lofting Ajmal, Aamer and Rana for boundaries. Two no-balls by Rana in the 45th over almost put it across Pakistan, and 16 runs from the next over, by Umar Gul, sealed the matter. If planning was the key in New Zealand’s innings, it was conspicuous by its absence in Pakistan’s. Their openers were duly tested by New Zealand bowlers, who found the perfect balance between the defensive and the offensive after having lost the toss on a flat pitch surrounded by an outfield as fast as a highway.Imran Nazir and Kamran Akmal made uncharacteristically solid starts but, at 43 for 0 after nine overs, Shane Bond produced a special over. Two accurate bouncers, one a no-ball, and the other, a jaffa, rising from just short of a length and jagging into Nazir and taking the edge, reminded the cricketing world what it had been missing.Ian Butler, who had been taken for three boundaries in his first over, removed Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal in back-to-back overs, both to ordinary shots. But during an 80-run stand for the fifth wicket, Mohammad Yousuf and Umar didn’t try to unsettle the lesser New Zealand bowlers. It seemed as though they had forgotten the batting Powerplay, and played as if the good old 15-over restriction rule was in place.Yousuf fell when the time to accelerate came, having scored 45 off 78. James Franklin and Grant Elliot went for 40 in their 10 overs, and gave Butler, Bond and Vettori enough scope to attack. Butler ended with career-best figures of 4 for 44.When Yousuf fell in the 39th over, with the score on 166, one would have expected Shahid Afridi to call for the Powerplay. He didn’t. But he kept playing risky cricket with the field out, and paid for it. In between those two dismissals, Taufel ruled Umar lbw off Vettori but replays showed the batsman had hit the ball. The Pakistan bowlers were left to give themselves runs to defend, and Aamer and Ajmal did that in uninhibited manner. They managed 233, with a 35-run last-wicket stand, but their batsmen had left them with too much to do.

Zimbabwe invests in new domestic structure

More details of Zimbabwe’s domestic restructuring have emerged

Martin Williamson22-May-2009More details of Zimbabwe’s domestic restructuring have emerged, and if implemented as planned it will result in a substantial increase in the volume of cricket played as well as offering professional contracts to more of the country’s players.Speaking to Cricinfo earlier this week, Ozias Bvute, the board’s chief executive, explained that the five new franchises would be regionally based and all inclusive. In recent years, there has been considerable criticism of the internal structure, with disgruntled stakeholders claiming provincial boards had been purged of dissenters. Bvute insisted that they would be open to anyone to get involved in, although critics have already pointed out that the board has indicated it will appoint the five CEOs.Another area of concern has been the centralisation of the game on Harare. Even though there have been various different provincial sides in recent years, many of these have been filled with Harare-based cricketers bussed out to the regions to make up numbers.Bvute explained that each franchise would contract its own players and there would be residency requirements. “We’re looking to take the game back to the community, so we give them ownership, and so responsibility, to prove their ability.” Any person who did not want to commit to a professional contract could be offered a pay-as-you play deal.In a bold initiative, Bvute also revealed that ZC was looking to attract overseas players to come to Zimbabwe to improve the quality of the teams. He said each franchise would be equally funded and would be responsible for all aspects of the game in their area. “They will be fully independent,” Bvute insisted. “Zimbabwe Cricket will run the national game, they will run the domestic one.” The only things under the direct control of ZC would be scheduling and identifying venues. The other major change will be the length of the season. In recent years all major domestic competitions have been shoehorned into a short two or three-month period between February and May. The new schedule sees the Logan Cup expanded from six matches a side to 16, starting in August and ending the following February. Each four-day match will be followed by a one-day game. The Twenty20 tournament would follow at the end of February.Bvute was confident that there was sufficient funding available to underpin the professional structure and the expanded season.Asked if there were enough facilities outside Harare, he was bullish. “Grounds have fallen by the wayside, but they were never run by ZC. They were privately-run sports clubs that fell victim to the economic situation. The venues we run are in good shape.”
