Leeds eyeing stunning swoop for Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey

According to French journalist Manu Lonjon, Leeds United have made an offer for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey.

What’s the word?

The Jamaica international enjoyed an impressive campaign with the Bundesliga side last season, scoring seven times in 33 games and providing a further three assists.

Despite not being a regular start for Leverkusen, Bailey came up with moments of brilliance, including a match-winning brace against Bayern Munich away at the Allianz Arena back in November.

Is it Haaland Snr or David Hopkins? Your Leeds knowledge will be put to the test with this quiz…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Now, Lonjon claims that newly-promoted Leeds have set their sights on the 23-year-0ld and have already made an offer for him.

Far better than Jack Harrison

Whilst Marcelo Bielsa will no doubt be keen to reward those who secured Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League in the first place, when a player of Bailey’s quality becomes available, it’s a move you simply have to make.

Jack Harrison was the Whites’ first-choice winger out on the left-hand side, scoring six times and setting up eight others in the whole of the Championship. But whilst he was impressive for the Elland Road side, Bailey has been performing at a far higher level in the Bundesliga and European competitions.

In the German top-flight, the Jamaican averaged 1.3 shots, one key pass and 1.6 dribbles per game, and his talents are there for all to see. After helping to bring him to the club Leverkusen’s managing director, Rudi Voller, said: “He’s got extraordinary pace, he’s very skilful with the ball, and he will give further impetus to our attacking department.”

Despite predominantly being left-footed, Bailey can play on either flank like he did last season, and can take on defenders on both the inside and outside. As players like Kevin De Bruyne have shown in the Premier League, being able to use both feet equally well can be a huge difference-maker, and the Leverkusen star has that in his locker.

If Bielsa is looking for a winger to add a piece of magic to his team, then he should look no further than Bailey.

Tottenham fans react to Hojbjerg latest

It’s no secret that Tottenham are interested in Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after reports this week stated that the London club are in for the Dane.

With the midfielder entering the final year of his contract, one would imagine that he’d be available for a cut-price fee, but unfortunately for Spurs, it seems as though that’s not the case.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made it abundantly clear with his comments earlier this week that the Saints wouldn’t be letting the former Bayern Munich man go for cheap, and The Times have stated that the south-coast outfit value the midfielder at £35m.

This news has Tottenham fans concerned, partially down to the reputation Daniel Levy has garnered for himself when it comes to being a tough negotiator and refusing to pay over the odds for a player.

The pessimists amongst the fanbase are already blaming Levy for the deal falling through, despite no reports backing up those claims.

You can’t help but feel Levy is being a little hard done by here, fans are already angry with him for not completing a deal that may still yet be done, and even if he does refuse to pay, is that necessarily a bad thing?

Hojbjerg is a good player, but £35m for a player in the final year of their contract is preposterous, especially when they’re not from a top side.

Other’s simply weren’t happy with the valuation, stating that Hojbjerg isn’t worth the £35m that Tottenham are being quoted.

One fan claimed that better players were available at that price point, and with Liverpool being reportedly being asked for just £1m more for Thiago Alcantara, who is a regular for one of Europe’s top sides, you have to say that these fans may have a point.

7 Most Surprising 2019/20 PL Season Stats

The 2019/20 Premier League season was unprecedented in both length and deed, lasting for nearly a whole year and delivering Liverpool a maiden PL-era championship. Correspondingly, the Premier League’s 28th edition produced some truly surprising stats.

4th placed Chelsea conceded the same goals tally as 15th placed Brighton

Frank Lampard’s first season as Chelsea boss can go down as a reasonable success, particularly in the context of the transfer ban that dogged them last summer.

The Blues are once again in the Champions League, with the arrivals of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech expected to restore their status as genuine title contenders in 2020/21, as will be reflected in pre-season soccer betting outrights for the upcoming PL campaign.

Nonetheless, the defence has been left with a lot of soul searching to do, with 54 goals against equating to 1.42 goals conceded per game. Away from home, Chelsea notably recorded just one clean sheet across the entire campaign – two fewer awayday shutouts than bottom-placed Norwich!

Five teams below Chelsea lost fewer home games than them

Chelsea’s woes do not end with the backline, and alarms have also been rightly raised over the club’s home form.

Back in the 2000s, during Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea heyday, Stamford Bridge was a fortress considered impregnable. Notably, the Blues once went 86 home games unbeaten between 2004 and 2008, but those days are a distant memory.

Bournemouth, West Ham and Southampton memorably left Stamford Bridge with three points and a clean sheet apiece back in the winter. The other two winning visitors were Liverpool and Manchester United, with whom Chelsea should theoretically be on equal terms.

That return of five home defeats also equalled the tally sustained by Chelsea in 2015/16, when the Blues finished tenth, for the club’s worst finish in two decades.

6th placed Tottenham won as many away games as relegated Bournemouth.

Speaking of underachieving London clubs, Tottenham also take an unwanted spotlight, after recording their lowest points tally since the 2008/09 campaign. If that is not surprising enough, then the fact that they travelled as well as a relegated club certainly is.

Perhaps most alarming is the speed at which Tottenham have slipped down the ‘away table’ over the past two years.

At the start of 2018, Tottenham were the kings of the road, taking 18 away points from a possible 24 between 23 December 2017 and 7 April 2018. They did so through a rigorous counter-attacking setup designed to stretch host teams who were duty-bound to attack.

Sadly for the Lilywhites, similar devastation was not forthcoming in the 2019/20 away campaign.

Amongst Tottenham’s most chastening results away from home included a 3-1 drubbing at an empty Bramall Lane, preceded by goalless defeats at Southampton and Brighton, the latter of which ended a humiliating 3-0, with a relatively unknown rookie Seagull named Aaron Connolly scoring a brace.

Tim Krul pulled off the second-highest number of saves across the season.

Natural logic leads many people to assume that a relatively low tally in the ‘goals against’ column equates to a fantastic shot stopper in the nets. However, that is not necessarily true.

After a one-sided finale against Liverpool, Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka had the accolade of pulling off the highest number of saves, as recognised by the official FPL game. Yet, despite his heroics, the Magpies ended 2019/20 with the second-worst goal difference amongst surviving bottom-half teams.

In second place, surprisingly, was Tim Krul – even though basement club Norwich City ended the campaign with a goal difference of -49, and 75 goals conceded.

Man City attained the highest aggregate PL win over a single team.

It is well-known that Watford are a repeat victim of Manchester City’s savage attacking ways.

Successive home defeats by 5+ goals without reply back in 2017, alongside the biggest FA Cup final landslide of post-war times last May, and an 8-0 thrashing at the Etihad Stadium back in September, stand as most prominent in that regard.

While the 4-0 victory City attained at Vicarage Road in July might have been comparatively gentle, it still brought the aggregate H2H scoreline for last season to 12-0. That was enough to beat the existing PL record of 12-1, as set by Blackburn (vs Nottingham Forest) back in 1995/96.

City’s feat also represents a new Premier League record for a clean-sheet aggregate win, breaking the one set by Liverpool back in 2001/02, when the Reds thrashed relegation-bound Ipswich 11-0 over two very mismatched encounters.

Sheffield United lost as many home games after a level half-time score as Norwich.

If ever there was a byword for disciplined defending and great persistence in the face of a small budget, it is Sheffield United.

Regardless of the opposition, the Blades’ plan was always to contain initially and then strike efficiently. That covers much of the fact that they were level at half-time in 11 of 19 home games. However, they ended up losing on four such occasions (36.36% of the time), implying that it is far from a bulletproof strategy.

This statistic is made all the more shocking by their home form, as it stood prior to the 1-0 defeat against Everton on 20 July.

Immediately prior to that loss, a 3-0 win over Chelsea had marked their first completion of a six-game unbeaten home run in the Premier League since the spring of 1994. Across the five wins in that six-game sequence, Sheffield had averaged exactly two goals per match.

Wolves won more games after losing at HT than the bottom nine combined.

In addition to seeing one of their own (Conor Coady) lose the lowest average of aerial duels amongst centre-backs, Wolves won a league-high four times after trailing at the break. Impressively, three of those four victories came on the road, fully illustrating Wolves’ fearless nature under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Also significant is the fact that the first three of those comeback wins were concentrated inside a four-week period spanning December to January.

Furthermore, two of those four wins came against Manchester City and Tottenham – two of six teams considered amongst something of an ‘elite’ division within the top flight.

Tottenham Hotspur: Alasdair Gold gives update on Spurs transfer target; could be good news for Harry Kane

According to football.london, Tottenham Hotspur will once again consider signing Artem Dzyuba in the summer.

Dzyuba’s contract with Zenit St Petersburg is set to expire in June, and Tottenham have been interested in the Russian before.

After Harry Kane sustained a hamstring injury, Spurs reached out to the striker in January, but Zenit refused to let him leave. He is currently valued at £11.7m via Transfermarkt.

However, Dzyuba will become a free agent at the end of the month, and Alasdair Gold revealed the club will be interested in bringing him to north London.

Jose Mourinho is itching to find a backup for Kane, as the Spurs talisman hasn’t played a competitive match since New Year’s Day.

Having returned to Zenit St Petersburg in 2018, the Russia international has scored 13 goals and created 9 assists in 21 games in the Russian Premier League, taking 3 shots and averaging 2.1 key passes per game (via WhoScored). He stands at 196cm tall and is an obvious set-piece threat.

Indeed, it could be argued that the big Russian is the ideal Mourinho frontman. The Portuguese famously deployed Didier Drogba and Diego Costa to terrorise the opposition during his spells in charge of Chelsea, as both players relied on their physical presence to bully defences, and Dzyuba plays in a similar way. WhoScored notes Aerial Duels are one of his key strengths.

Despite his age, the 31-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon, and his ability to out-muscle defenders sets him apart from some of his counterparts, including the Lilywhites’ other targets like Loren Moron and M’Baye Niang.

As it stands, Dzyuba would be a shrewd signing to make, as he would be the perfect substitute for Kane, and he will also be available for free. Furthermore, he could become Mourinho’s new Drogba if he moves to north London in the future, as he even has a similar playing style as previously mentioned.

Tottenham fans, do you think Daniel Levy should sign Artem Dzyuba for free? Let us know down below!

Opinion: Victor Orta’s success in Daniel James pursuit could be priceless in Leeds United’s promotion bid

Leeds United remain top of the Championship despite suffering defeat against Stoke City last weekend, and with just a few days remaining in the transfer window to strengthen the squad Victor Orta is facing a race against time to give Marcelo Bielsa what he wants.

Bielsa has made no secret of his preference to keep his squad tightly-knit and promote talented youth players to deputise for injured senior players. That attitude has served Leeds well so far but, considering how physically demanding the season has been and Bielsa’s history of faltering in the final months of the season, the club need at least one more signing to maximise their chances of clinching promotion.

The arrival of Kiko Casilla was widely regarded as a timely coup for the club, and if anyone is likely to join him at Elland Road this month it seems it will be Swansea City’s Daniel James.

Indeed, a recent report from the Daily Mirror suggests Bielsa has left Orta in charge of concluding a deal for James this month, with no further signings requested from the enigmatic Argentine.

Orta’s success in the final days of the transfer window has the potential to be season-defining in the context of Leeds’ promotion bid.

The succession of injury problems this season have been compounded by the departures of both Samu Saiz and Lewis Baker, and with the squad wearing thin the arrival of James could be priceless.

James is relatively inexperienced at this level but he has rapidly demonstrated a sound ability to perform well in the Championship, with his technical quality and willingness to work hard off the ball making him an ideal fit for Leeds.

His arrival would add greater depth in wide positions and consequently help to facilitate a permanent role for Pablo Hernandez at number ten, which is where Bielsa understandably wants him to operate.

The same report also claims that Leeds will happily walk away from the negotiating table if they believe a potential deal is not good value, but with promotion on the line it’s vital that Orta manages to strike an agreement to hand Bielsa a priceless asset during the final months of the season.

Orta has completed a handful of smart deals in the transfer market since becoming the club’s director of football, but a successful bid for James could be crucial in the context of Leeds’ bid to end their top-flight exile.

American forward left Chelsea in summer windowTaking on a new challenge at San SiroHoping to put creative qualities to good useWHAT HAPPENED?

The United States international enjoyed a bright start to his time in Italy following a summer transfer from Chelsea, with a flurry of pre-season assists followed by two goals in as many Serie A appearances. Pulisic was, however, benched for Milan’s opening Champions League fixture of 2023-24 against Newcastle.

There is no doubting Pulisic’s creative ability, as he remains a talismanic presence for his country, but there are suggestions that the 25-year-old is too risk-averse in domestic football and needs to shake those shackles in order to become a superstar at San Siro.

WHAT THEY SAID

World Cup winner Henry – who represented the likes of Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona and the New York Red Bulls in his playing days – has told the new of what Pulisic needs to do in order to thrive: “As a creative player if you don’t try to make mistakes, you cannot succeed. I can see on the national team, [Pulisic] feels like, ‘I can make mistakes.’ When you play on the big club [team], you play the ball one time and it’s a mistake and the next time you touch it is 15 minutes after. People remember every time you touch the ball that you lost it. The international team, he plays with that confidence. We were all creative players, so you have to score. So if you feel like in your head you can’t lose that ball, then you might as well step out of the field and don’t play.”

The Ukraine international winger was acquired by the Blues in an £89 million ($107m) transfer deal during the January window. He has struggled to live up to expectations, with questions being asked of whether he could end up being a big money flop.

Mudryk has stuck to the task of proving his worth, though, and got himself on the scoresheet during a derby date with Fulham. He is now being backed by those around him – including Stamford Bridge team-mate Levi Colwill – to become “one of the best players in the world”, with there still plenty of potential in his game to unlock.

DID YOU KNOW?

Mudryk will not be shying away from any challenge, with the jet-heeled 22-year-old revealing on social media that he has been sporting shin pads that display the message: “Can’t, Can’t, Can’t, Can.” He has now delivered recognisable end product and will be hoping that there is plenty more to come.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Mauricio Pochettino has never doubted Mudryk’s ability to come good and told reporters after seeing the energetic forward score at Craven Cottage before being replaced at half-time as a precaution – with another injury the last thing that Chelsea need right now: “For ‘Mischa’ he scored his first goal in the Premier League, and for Armando [Broja] after a long period out, he scored again. I’m so happy for them, they deserve it. We need to understand that young people need time and need to settle. It’s about adaptation.”

Liverpool player ratings vs Aston Villa: Roberto Firmino's perfect farewell! Departing forward keeps slim Champions League hopes alive

The Brazilian marked his final home appearance for the Reds with a late equaliser in front of the Kop, on an otherwise frustrating afternoon

Roberto Firmino marked his farewell Anfield appearance for Liverpool with a goal but the Reds' Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. Firmino, who was given an emotional send-off by the home fans, emerged from the bench to secure a point for Jurgen Klopp's side, who had trailed to Jacob Ramsey's first-half strike, with an 89th-minute leveller in front of the Kop.

The result, mathematically at least, keeps Liverpool alive in the race for the top four, but they will need either Manchester United or potentially Newcastle to lose each of their last two matches, as well as winning themselves at Southampton on the final day of the season, if they are to sneak in.

GOAL rates Liverpool's players from Anfield…

Alisson Becker (7/10):

Good save from Ramsey at 1-0, and swept up outside his box well. Should have gone up for a late corner, surely.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (5/10):

Overloaded for Ramsey's goal and his passing radar was nowhere near as sharp as it normally is. Looked increasingly frustrated as the game wore on.

Ibrahima Konate (5/10):

Caught out badly for the penalty. Did OK generally.

Virgil van Dijk (6/10):

Early clash of heads with Watkins didn't prevent him dominating in the air. Unfortunate to be penalised for offside when Gakpo thought he'd equalised.

Andy Robertson (6/10):

No impact offensively, did OK defensively.

Jordan Henderson (4/10):

Not up to scratch with or without the ball. Did well to last as long as he did.

Fabinho (6/10):

Strong in the tackle and won lots of headers. One of Liverpool's better performers.

Curtis Jones (5/10):

Couldn't have the impact he's had in recent weeks, despite his endeavour.

Mohamed Salah (5/10):

Not able to get into the game at all. Lacked bite and conviction, but produced a fine assist for the equaliser.

Luis Diaz (4/10):

Struggled to impact the game, despite seeing lots of the ball. Decision-making was poor.

Cody Gakpo (6/10):

Denied an equaliser by a controversial VAR intervention. Quiet otherwise but showed fight.

On for an emotional farewell, and delivered the perfect finish to make it 1-1. The ovation he got at the end said it all. A legend.

James Milner (6/10):

Another goodbye, he came on with Liverpool losing their way in the game and helped force a leveller. Another legend.

Kostas Tsimikas (6/10):

Fresh legs and corners.

Everything you need to know about the new Gers kits for 2023-24

Rangers and Castoreare set to team up again for their 2023-24 kit range as the Ibrox club seeks to bounce back from a barren campaign that saw them end the term empty-handed. With rivals Celtic completing a domestic treble to lock up all the major silverware on hand, the Glasgow club failed to build on the success of their Europa League final appearance in 2021-22 during the 2022-23 campaign.

Now, with Michael Beale ready for a first full pre-season at the helm following his arrival last November, the Gers will be determined to kick back on for success this coming campaign and will be determined to ensure they look good while doing it too.

The Rangers already unveiled their 2023-24 home kit in early June, with little change visible as Castore stick to a tried-and-tested formula. The Rangers 2023-24 away kit was then unveiled on June 23, a fresh take on the popular red, white, and blue.

So, what new kits will Rangers wear in 2023-24? GOAL looks at the jerseys set to be sported by James Tavernier, Ryan Jack and more while giving you the lowdown on rumours and leaks alongside details on how to buy them online.

Rangers officially unveiled the first of their 2023-24 kits in early June, with the Scottish Premiership side releasing their home strip for the upcoming campaign ahead of what is set to be a busy pre-season schedule.

Commonly associated with blue against the green of rivals Celtic, there has been little change from Castore in their designs for the new term, with the apparel provider opting to stick with a tried-and-tested formula.

However, the 2023-24 home kit does come with revisions upon its classic design. A lighter shade of blue forms a full-bodied effort from the sportswear company this time around, alternated with thin stripes for a double-texted effect across the chest.

In further addition, the red-and-white decal trim has been scaled back around the neck, dramatically reduced to a minimalistic twin-pipe loop and removed entirely from the sleeve cap.

Lastly, the collar has reverted to a V-neck approach following last season’s rounded effort, more in line with the designs initially favoured by Castore when they took over from Hummel in 2020.

The Rangers 2023-24 away kit was unveiled by the club on June 23. The all-new away kit is a fresh take on some of the Rangers' most popular red, white, and blue away kits of the past.

The away shirt features a clean, minimalist design which is elevated with thin stripes. The white base of the away shirt, adorned with a subtle touch of red and blue stripes at the base, makes for an instant classic away kit for the club, pairing nicely with their new home kit.

The Rangers 2023-24 away kit is available to buy now from Castore, with a replica men's shirt retailing at £70.00.

Much like the club’s away strip, the Rangers 2023-24 third kit remains under lock and key, with the Gers yet to officially confirm what their alternative strip will be for the upcoming season.

Fans can expect it to likely offer a sharp contrast however to the home and away options offered by Castore, with the apparel provider previously plumping for black, purple and orange-hued numbers since they took over.

Last year’s fiery tangerine effort harked back to the Diadora away strip of the 2002-03 season, when Alex McLeish led a side that included Mikel Arteta and Barry Ferguson to a domestic treble.

As with the home kit, fans can expect this one to retail at £70.00 from Castore officially unveiled.

Antony, Gakpo, and Pulisic: Analysing all the strikers linked to Man Utd to replace Ronaldo

GOAL runs the numbers on all of the strikers interesting Erik Ten Hag

Manchester United had months to solidify their attack this summer but are now entering crisis mode after their top targets proved either too costly or unattainable. Cristiano Ronaldo's desire to leave threatens to thin an already fragile front-line, and they are desperate to add reinforcements soon.

The club have cast a wide net to identify someone, anyone, who might be able to offer them the cutting edge in the final third that they have lacked. The players on their radar have varied dramatically in age and skill level, and just weeks before the window closes, it remains unclear who they might land.

GOAL has thumbed through the statistics of Manchester United's most-linked attacking targets and here are the results.

GettyMatheus Cunha

Considered a huge prospect after impressing at Hertha Berlin, Matheus Cunha did not kick on as he might have hoped in his inaugural Atletico Madrid campaign. He was largely used as a substitute last term, and his stock has dipped somewhat as a result.

There is plenty to like about the Brazilian, though. Cunha is full of energy and defends from the front, while his flexibility allows him to play pretty much anywhere along the front-line. He may not be a big name, but it is not inconceivable that Erik ten Hag could mould him into an effective Premier League attacker.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, Atletico Madrid are expected to reject any offers that come their way.

The transfer saga that just won't go away this summer…

If Ten Hag had his way, Antony, his golden boy at Ajax, would have arrived at Old Trafford weeks ago. Quick as a whippet and an expert at cutting in from the right, he has already been capped by Brazil despite being just 22.

The negatives? His numbers are not mind blowing, and Brazilians from the Eredivisie do not always settle in the Premier League. Just ask Afonso Alves.

GettyCody Gakpo

It is hard not to get excited about Cody Gakpo, who reached a new level at PSV last season.

Gangly and graceful on the ball, the 23-year-old can glide past defenders with ease. His goal record is impressive, too, and he is equally creative when fielded out wide.

His failure to impress over two legs against Leicester in the Europa Conference League is a slight worry when considering how he would fare against Premier League opposition – but it's unfair to read too much into such as small sample there.
