West Ham Could Ditch Scamacca By Signing £25m Speedster

West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing RB Salzburg striker Noah Okafor this summer and his potential arrival at the London Stadium could allow David Moyes to ditch Gianluca Scamacca.

Could West Ham sign Noah Okafor?

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham are all considering moves for the £25m-rated forward, who joins a long list of attacking talents to have established themselves with the Austrian side.

Sadio Mane and Erling Haaland are perhaps the prime examples of world-class players who have come through the ranks at Salzburg, and West Ham would be hoping for similar results with Okafor should he link up with the Hammers in the summer.

While the focus right now should be on retaining their Premier League status, it seems likely that Moyes, or whoever is in charge, will have a hefty transfer budget next season if and when Declan Rice potentially departs for Champions League football, and West Ham have to ensure they spend that money wisely.

Okafor has certainly caught the eye with Salzburg in recent seasons, as he boasts an impressive return of 34 goals and 23 assists in just 108 appearances for Die Bullen, which only looks set to get better as he continues to progress with the Austrian side.

His return of three Champions League goals in six games in each of the last two seasons certainly suggests that he could follow in the footsteps of Haaland in the future, although perhaps not with the same ferocity as the Manchester City goal-machine.

Back in 2021, Okafor earned a lot of praise from Swiss U21 manager Mauro Lustrinelli.

He said: “Noah is currently in the best period of his career. In the past, he had many small injuries which sometimes prevented him from performing.

"He is now in very good physical condition. We already knew that he had magnificent technical qualities, speed and power. In recent months, he has also grown mentally.

"Since he has been in Austria, Noah has also improved in the defensive phase, in pressing and counter-pressing. If he continues to work like this, he will have an extraordinary career. He already has everything and he seems to be going in the right direction."

You could argue that none of the strikers currently available to Moyes at West Ham possesses the pace and power of Okafor, as Michail Antonio looks past his best, Danny Ings is a penalty-box poacher and Scamacca has offered next to nothing in his spell with the east London club, finding the net just three times in the league.

The Italian arrived at the London Stadium with a big reputation after impressing with Sassuolo but his lack of goals and game time – featuring in only 16 Premier League games – has seen him lose his regular starting spot in Moyes' side in recent weeks.

Therefore, if Okafor were to arrive in the summer, then Scamacca could be the first striker to go, as he represents the most expendable asset of the three senior options in Moyes' squad.

Spurs: Daniel Levy makes contact with 48 y/o boss

Tottenham Hotspur could well have identified a possible successor to Antonio Conte at N17, with the Italian looking increasingly likely to be axed in the near future.

What's the latest on Oliver Glasner to Spurs?

According to German outlet, BILD, the Lilywhites are believed to have made 'contact' with Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner regarding the possibility of replacing the former Chelsea boss in the dugout, with recent reports claiming that Conte could be sacked this week, following his recent, post-Southampton outburst.

The suggestion is that the north Londoners are 'now interested' in potentially turning to Glasner to fill the position, with the 48-year-old – who has been in charge of the Bundesliga side since 2021 – having just over a year left on his existing deal in Frankfurt.

Would Glasner be a good fit for Spurs?

The former LASK head coach has certainly caught the attention as a result of his fine work in Germany of late, having notably guided his side to Europa League glory last season, before securing progression into the last-16 of the Champions League this time around, finishing second in Group D – just a point behind Conte's men.

Despite the solid body of work that the Austrian has amassed in his managerial career thus far, there may be concerns that Tottenham would be simply appointing a carbon copy of their current manager, were chairman Daniel Levy to make a concrete approach for Glasner.

That likeness to Conte is showcased by the fact that the pair both typically utilise a back three, while the former Wolfsburg boss also appears something of a pragmatic coach, with his side's playing style having been outlined by Barcelona's Xavi last season:

"They play on the counter-attack and counter-press in a way I’ve only seen from a few teams in my career."

With Spurs supporters likely sick to death of Conte's "negative", counter-attacking methods – as described by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville – the fear will be that Glasner's arrival could merely continue that brand of football, rather than spark a transformation to a more progressive and free-flowing model.

Equally, on a weekend in which Conte simply exploded following his side's late collapse away to the Saints – hitting out at his "selfish" players – the Frankfurt man also publicly outlined his anger with his squad following the defeat to Union Berlin, having questioned the "quality" of his charges.

Antonio Conte shouting on the sidelines in Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League win over Nottingham Forest.

Although that may simply be a sign of Glasner's desire to win, such an approach has seemingly not proved fruitful for managers at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium of late, with the typically ruthless Jose Mourinho having also alienated members of the squad prior to his sacking in 2021, with The Athletic referencing the 'divide' that had emerged in the latter days of the Portuguese's time at the club.

Not that there is anything wrong with having a demanding manager who strives for perfection, yet Levy will likely be wary of repeating recent managerial errors by securing a dominant figure who could ultimately end up alienating the squad.

As such, while there is undoubtedly merit in the links to Glasner, the Austrian's apparent likeness to the under-fire Conte should well be something of a red flag.

Everton: Idrissa Gueye ‘a mistake waiting to happen’

Everton reporter for PA Media Carl Markham says that Idrissa Gueye is ‘a mistake waiting to happen’ after holding onto the ball for too long against Brentford.

The Lowdown: Vital win

Everton picked up a vital win at the bottom of the Premier League table with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against high-flying Brentford.

Dwight McNeil scored in the very first minute of the game, and that ended up being enough to give them all three points at Goodison Park.

The Latest: Gueye criticism

Despite the victory, Markham was unimpressed with Gueye, claiming that he looks like ‘a mistake waiting to happen’:

“Everton’s midfield have done a pretty good job so far but Idrissa Gana Gueye looks like a mistake waiting to happen. Just holding onto the ball far too long when there are options around him.”

The Verdict: Not the first time…

This is not the first time that Gueye has received criticism this season, and Markham’s statement was justified by the shocking mistake that he made in Arsenal’s 4-0 win over the Toffees earlier this month.

This afternoon, the £80,000-per-week central midfielder was dribbled past twice, the joint-most in the home team, and only managed to make two tackles, while he also gave possession away nine times (SofaScore).

Gueye also had more touches than any of his team-mates with 53, which suggests that he was holding onto the ball for too long, as Markham suggests.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see whether he keeps his starting place, with the likes of James Garner and Tom Davies as other options on the bench.

Spurs: Daniel Levy slammed by Danny Rose

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy’s recent comments on the club’s recruitment has been slammed by former Spurs left-back Danny Rose.

Is Daniel Levy to blame at Spurs?

Spurs were dumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday night and Rose was speaking on Sky Sports about where the club is currently at both on and off the pitch.

Something which was noted is the club’s poor recruitment over recent years which has seen a lot of money spent on players who have not improved the side.

“Our spend levels show we have invested in the team – however, we walk a fine line between long-term investment and short-termism. This is why our recruitment must be first class as mistakes at this level have a financial and sporting impact for future seasons,” Levy wrote in the 2022 financial statement.

Rose has previously voiced his thoughts on some of the player’s Spurs have brought through the doors claiming he had to Google the names of some of them.

And on the back of this, Rose suggested this is something which he had previously said during his time in north London but received a fine for speaking out against the club:

“I still like to try and go into the Spurs training ground. So, I’ll have to be careful what I say there, but I think everybody’s got to be held accountable. I heard recently, Daniel Levy said something about the signings haven’t been great and it’s bizarre, that, because I’m sure I said something like that six years ago and got fined two weeks’ wages.”

How could hiring Pochettino affect Spurs’ recruitment?

The Lilywhites’ season has quickly come undone over the last few weeks with exits from both the FA Cup and Champions League leaving them with only top-four football to play for.

This, along with their poor style of play, has led to calls for Antonio Conte to be removed from his position before the end of the campaign.

Spurs have spent well since the Italian’s arrival with Fabio Paratici leading the recruitment charge as the club’s director of football.

However, the reports suggesting Mauricio Pochettino could be in line to replace the Italian in north London will bring up potential issues for the club’s current recruitment setup.

It is believed the Argentine would not be willing to work under the current model with a director of football making the decisions on the club’s transfers.

So in that sense, it could be seen as a potential step backwards by hiring Pochettino. But there is another issue at the club with Paratici’s future also left unclear as a result of his recent court case.

The final verdict is expected in the coming weeks and it could leave him unable to carry on in his role at Spurs.

This could open the door for Pochettino to potentially return, but it would be interesting to see whether Levy would be keen to continue with the current recruitment model.

Connor Goldson let Rangers down in final

Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale suffered defeat for the first time in charge of the club as his side lost the final of the League Cup 2-1 on Sunday.

Their opponents took the lead just before half-time as the Light Blues fell asleep in their own penalty box and allowed Kyogo Furuhashi to arrive unmarked to tap the ball into the net from close range.

Celtic punished them again in the 55th minute. Kyogo scored his second goal of the match by sliding in ahead of Borna Barisic to meet Reo Hatate’s cross.

However, Rangers reacted brilliantly to pull one back almost immediately. Alfredo Morelos met James Tavernier’s set-piece and put his side back in the fight by converting at the back post.

Whilst it was a performance that was full of disappointing performances across the park for the Light Blues, one player let Beale down badly in the heart of the defence – Connor Goldson.

How did Connor Goldson perform against Celtic?

The manager’s veteran defender, who has played over 250 competitive matches for the club, did not showcase his leadership and experience for the Gers as his sloppy defending ultimately cost the club a trophy.

Goldson will not want to see the replays for the opening goal from Kyogo as the Englishman was caught horrendously out of position, which allowed the Japan forward to put their rivals ahead.

Ex-Gers winger Neil McCann criticised the central defender’s role in the opener, saying:

“Connor Goldson is right out the game. Kyogo just walks into the box and it’s the easiest tap-in you could have in any game, never mind a cup final.”

Journalist Jonny McFarlane added to that by Tweeting that it was a “terrible” goal to concede as the ex-Brighton man was in “no man’s land” at the back.

The £37k-per-week enforcer was then part of the defence that failed to cut out Hatate’s ball along the box for the second goal, although Barisic was the closest man to Kyogo for that particular strike.

Goldson also did little to stop Allan McGregor from being tested as the Hoops had a whopping 14 efforts on goal, including five on target, which suggests the 30-year-old did not do much to make up for his first-half error.

Therefore, the English defender was a big liability for the Gers in the match as his lapse in concentration broke the deadlock in the match and allowed Celtic to kick on and dominate the match. His error let Beale down as the manager may not expect one of his most experienced players to make such a telling mistake.

10 most successful academy products in Leeds United’s history

Leeds United are responsible for producing a number of world class players over the years. There was a point in time when their academy seemed like a never-ending talent factory, with a constant flow of future England internationals bursting onto the scene in a style even Micah Richards would be proud of.

In recent times, that talent factory has slowed down ever so slightly, with the modern game more focused on improving via the transfer market, and not the option closer to home in the form of academies. Those at Elland Road will still be hoping to discover the next best thing in the next few years, however.

With that said, we’ve ranked the 10 most successful academy products in Leeds United history.

10) Fabian Delph

Going onto captain Aston Villa after graduating from the Leeds United academy, Fabian Delph was one of the most talented young England midfielders at one stage, even earning himself a move to Manchester City.

At The Etihad, Delph picked up two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and three League Cups, playing a part in the famous ‘Centurions’ team.

He went on to play for Everton before eventually retiring at the end of last season.

Delph also racked up 20 caps for England between 2014 and 2019.

9) Kalvin Phillips

Someone who will look to replicate Delph’s success at Manchester City, Kalvin Phillips was a fan favourite at Leeds United, where he helped the club back into the Premier League.

Phillips also played a key role in helping Leeds survive in the Premier League, and he earned himself a move to City.

He has also been an England regular under Gareth Southgate, and was a member of the squad at both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

If he can become a key player at City, he’ll climb this list.

8) Gary Kelly

One of the best right-backs in Leeds United history, Gary Kelly made an incredible total of 501 appearances for the Yorkshire club, even playing for the side that reached the Champions League semi-final in 2001.

Kelly was as consistent and loyal as they come, and more than deserves his place on this list.

Kelly also won 52 caps for the Republic of Ireland, playing for his country at the 2002 World Cup.

A true one-club man and Leeds legend.

7) David Batty

Never one for the spotlight, David Batty quietly enters this list as one of the most successful players to come out of the Leeds United academy.

The midfielder made an impressive 228 appearances for his boyhood club, and also played for both Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers, where he won the Premier League title.

He bookended his career at Elland Road, playing for them between 1987 and 1993, and between 1998 and 2004.

A player who loves Leeds, and was loved right back by the fans.

6) Paul Robinson

One of the most consistent goalkeepers to ever grace the Premier League, Paul Robinson played for Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham Hotspur, and Burnley, keeping a total of 88 Premier League clean sheets in 375 appearances.

His legacy as an English football and Leeds United legend still remains to this day.

He was good enough to become England’s No.1, a player who represented his country on the very biggest stage.

It could be argued he was more successful elsewhere, but at Leeds, he truly blossomed into an excellent goalkeeper.

5) Jonathan Woodgate

The fact that Jonathan Woodgate became a Galactico at Real Madrid should instantly cement his place as one of the most successful academy graduates in Leeds United history, even if it didn’t work out in Spain.

The central defender remains one of the best defenders to ever play for the Yorkshire club.

He represented Leeds with distinction between 1998 and 2003 but left as a financial crisis engulfed the club, moving to Newcastle United.

He would go on to win the League Cup with Tottenham, scoring the winning goal in the 2008 League Cup final against Chelsea.

4) James Milner

If this was a lactate test, then James Milner would be clear as the number one.

In a list of successful Leeds United academy graduates, however, he finishes a more than respectable fourth.

The Liverpool midfielder has won it all in what has been an illustrious career, and he doesn’t look like slowing down either, even at 36.

A regular England international and a truly unbelievable athlete, Milner has been superb for decades.

3) David Seaman

FA Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium in CardiffArsenal v SouthamptonArsenal captain David Seaman celebrates the winning goal from Robert Pires.17th May 2003.

One of England’s best ever goalkeepers, David Seaman didn’t actually make an appearance for Leeds United’s first-team.

Instead, he went on to have incredible success elsewhere, mainly at Arsenal, where he kept 218 clean sheets in 509 games.

At the North London club, Seaman also won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and one League Cup.

He also played for England at multiple major tournaments, including the World Cup.

2) Gary Speed

The late, great Gary Speed remains one of the best players to grace Elland Road.

In total, he made 226 appearances for his boyhood club, even winning a league title in 1992, and Community Shield in 1993.

He also starred for Newcastle United, where he made 285 appearances during his time at the club.

Speed is greatly missed, and retired with a huge cabinet filled with trophies.

1) Denis Irwin

Manchester United v Chelsea 5/3/94 F.A.Premiership Pic : Action Images / John Sibley Chelsea’s Steve Clarke takes on Manchester United’s Denis Irwin

One of the greatest players to ever play for Manchester United, it’s with great irony that we place Denis Irwin top of our list of the successful academy graduates to come out of Leeds United.

The left-back only made two appearances for Leeds, before joining Oldham Athletic and eventually making the move to Old Trafford, where he won seven Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups, and one League Cup.

He goes down as one of the best left-backs English football has ever seen.

It’s a real shame for Leeds that they didn’t know what they had with Irwin.

So, there you have it, our list of the most successful academy products in Leeds United history. Do you agree with our picks? Or do you believe that we’ve missed out some deserving players? Let us know in the comments!

Leeds firm up George Hall interest

Leeds United have firmed up their interest in Birmingham City midfielder George Hall, according to The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Hall links

Hall, described as a ‘really exciting’ player who can ‘influence games’, was heavily linked with a move to Elland Road back in April.

The 17-year-old can play in midfield, on the wing or even as a centre-forward, and made two Championship appearances for the Blues last season.

The England Under-18 international was also attracting interest from Newcastle, but it looks as if Leeds chiefs are ready to land the highly-rated youngster following a move for RB Salzburg right-back Rasmus Kristensen.

The Whites are now confident of landing the Salzburg defender, so it’s no surprise to see them already plotting their next move…

The Latest: Leeds update

The Daily Mail provided an update regarding Hall and Leeds on Tuesday afternoon.

They claimed that Leeds have firmed up their interest in Hall and are willing to make a seven-figure offer in order to bring the versatile player to Elland Road.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-4/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Next U23 addition?

Leeds have regularly looked to add to their Under-23 ranks since promotion to the Premier League and have reaped the rewards with Illan Meslier and Joe Gelhardt two prime examples of players establishing themselves as first-team regulars.

It appears as if Hall could be the next talent to move to Thorp Arch and aim to break through into Jesse Marsch’s first-team plans, with Brighton another side name-checked with an interest in the Birmingham teenager.

Hall is clearly a youngster in demand, but it looks as if Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers Enterprises are willing to write a seven-figure cheque relatively soon, so this could be one to keep a close eye on.

Leeds dealt setback in Gibbs-White pursuit

Leeds United have been dealt a setback in their pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun, who claim that Southampton are now leading the race to sign the Wolverhampton Wanderers attacking midfielder – who is also reported to be a target of Victor Orta – this summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The report goes on to state that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are willing to offer a figure in the region of £20m in order to land the England U21 international, while it is claimed that Wolves could be tempted into a big-money sale of the forward – despite recent reports suggesting that Bruno Lage has offered Gibbs-White a new contract at Molineux.

Imagine him & Aaronson

With Victor Orta having already sealed the extremely exciting signing of Brenden Aaronson this summer, the prospect of the Spaniard pairing the USA international with Gibbs-White in Jesse Marsch’s midfield will certainly be a mouthwatering one for the Elland Road faithful.

Indeed, over his 37 Championship appearances on loan at Sheffield United this season, the £9.9m-rated forward undoubtedly proved he is ready for top-flight football next term, scoring 12 goals, registering ten assists and creating 16 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.5 shots, making 1.6 key passes and completing 1.4 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the £1.5k-per-week talent who Pete Smith dubbed “dangerous” and Chris Basham claimed “glides past players” average a quite extraordinary WhoScore match rating of 7.14, not only ranking him as Paul Heckingbottom’s best performer in the league but also as the joint fifth-best player in the division as a whole.

As such, while it would appear as if Orta will face a tough battle in order to get a deal over the line for Gibbs-White this summer, the struggle would very much look to be worth it, as the 22-year-old would undoubtedly make an excellent addition to the former Red Bull Salzburg starlet in the Whites attack next season.

And, if he is available for a figure in the region of £20m, the England youth international would also represent something of a bargain, leading us to believe that Orta must do everything in his power to land the Wolves starlet in the coming months.

Tottenham: Journalist shares promising Eriksen update

Tottenham Hotspur may have been handed a boost in their pursuit of former star Christian Eriksen, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites eye reunion…

The Denmark superstar’s return to the grass after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 has been nothing short of a fairy tale story.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Eriksen ended the 2021/2022 Premier League season in fine form on a temporary spell at Brentford with a return to Spurs becoming possible.

The Times add Antonio Conte’s former midfielder at Inter Milan is a target for the Lilywhites alongside Leicester City playmaker Youri Tielemans, and what’s more, he could be open to re-signing.

The Latest: Eriksen eyeing return…

According to Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, if the right conditions are met, Eriksen ‘would be keen on a return’ to Spurs this summer as he eyes a move back to north London.

He adds that Tielemans, Weston McKennie (Juventus), Joao Palhinha (Sporting Lisbon) and Idrissa Gueye (PSG) are also potential midfield additions at Tottenham.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Eriksen has displayed flashes of his best Spurs form under Thomas Frank across London.

According to WhoScored, he finished the campaign as Brentford’s best all-round performer by average match rating – making the most key passes per 90 for the Bees and displaying real creativity.

Indeed, the ‘big name’ attacker will also be available on a Bosman deal as things stand – arguably a snip given Spurs themselves valued at him at £100 million just three years ago.

Taking all of this into account, it may well be a no-brainer to get it done.

Sunderland handed Bailey Wright boost

Early Sunderland team news has emerged as they prepare to face Wycombe in the League One play-off final on Saturday…

What’s the latest?

Alex Neil has confirmed that Bailey Wright and Lynden Gooch should be fine for the showpiece occasion at Wembley after picking up knocks in the semi-final tie against Sheffield Wednesday.

Aside from that, the Black Cats have no other fresh concerns to worry about heading into the game this weekend and look set to have the same squad available to them.

The 40-year-old told the club’s official website, via Sunderland Echo: “I think that we’ve come through both of those legs relatively unscathed, which is good.”We’ve got a couple of bumps and bruises, Bailey Wright got a bit of a split round his eye and I think Goochy had one on his head as well. But there’s nothing too significant, so we’re hoping that we can get the lads through this week so that they’re fine and firing and ready to go.” Supporters will be buzzing

Sunderland supporters will be buzzing by this news for multiple reasons.

Firstly, there are no new injuries to contend with, which is a huge relief as it means that all of the players who contributed to the semi-final win will also be available this weekend. It is a gigantic clash at Wembley with promotion on the line, and Neil will need as many of his players fit as possible to give them the best chance of making it back to the Championship.

The Stadium of Light faithful will also be delighted to hear that Wright should be fine after sustaining a knock against the Owls. Having him in the team against Wycombe will be a big boost, as he leaves it all out on the pitch and will put his body on the line for the club.

After the second leg against Wednesday, Roker Report writer Philip West heaped praise on the 29-year-old, tweeting: “Bailey Wright, what a warrior. Bloodstained shirt, blood trickling down his face, but he was an absolute rock tonight. That’s what playing for this club is about. Heart of a lion.”

The Australian was magnificent at the back that night, winning six duel and making one clearance, block and interception (as per Sofascore). That kind of performance, perfectly summed up by West, is what Sunderland will need on Saturday to see off Wycombe.

This is why Black Cats supporters will surely be buzzing with this update from Neil and will now be hoping that Wright is named in the starting XI at Wembley.
