Whatever Happened to Paul Kitson?

Paul Kitson was a striker who played in the top flight of English football for 12 years and the most distinguished clubs of whom he played for were Newcastle United and West Ham United. His spell at Newcastle was one of limited appearances due to the quality of the strikers already present and the one’s that were to come at the club. It was at West Ham that Kitson really shone through, showing his worth in excess by teaming up with John Hartson, creating a formidable strike force. His career was one of unfortunate brevity from Newcastle onwards, owing to injuries, circumstance and inconsistent performances.

Kitson secured his move to Newcastle from Derby County, where he had scored 36 goals in 105 appearances. He cost around £2.25 million and was reportedly paid £3,500 a week which nearly caused the deal to be put in jeopardy, as Newcastle didn’t want to restructure their payment system. The deal eventually materialised and Kitson’s debut came against Manchester United in what is now the Carling Cup, he scored one of the goals which helped produce a 2-0 win.

More gifted players started in-front Kitson in the forms of Andy Cole and Peter Beardsley, leaving the striker to be used sparingly as a squad player. Yet being behind prolific players isn’t necessarily a negative thing, you learn and improve in their presence and there is always the possibility they will move on, as was the case with Cole moving to Manchester United. Kitson would fill his boots admirably and scored 8 goals in 26 appearances due to it being the second half of the 1994-95 Premier League season. The season culminated in disappointment as Newcastle slumped to 6th after having been one of the title favourites.

During the 1995-96 season Kitson was again finding himself second best after Les Ferdinand was drafted in and so was Faustino Asprilla mid-season. This gave Kitson little opportunity to start or even feature for Newcastle, managing only seven league games and two goals. With incentives dwindling Kitson somehow found enough motivation to stay, that is until Alan Shearer was signed and sealed Kitson’s fate to seek football elsewhere.

West Ham chose to buy him for £2.3 million, giving Kitson a new lease of life with his exit going fairly unnoticed due to Kevin Keegan’s exit just weeks earlier. At Upton Park Kitson would form a renowned strike partnership with John Hartson, both scoring on their debut against Tottenham in a 4-3 victory. In his 14 games Kitson would succeed in scoring 8 goals which helped West Ham to avoid relegation.

Kitson’s story descends into less glamorous depths from here on in, by only playing 20 games combined from the next two seasons, hence only scoring a dismal 7 goals. The next three seasons were even worse and resulted in Kitson playing his last game after having not started in 21 months, nor scored for a year longer. This game saw him score a hat-trick against Charlton to sign off in style.

Five lower league clubs were to give Kitson playing time, with Charlton and Crystal Palace taking him on loan from West Ham. Brighton & Hove Albion would sign him on a free and so would Rushden & Diamonds, he then trialed for St. Albans City which proved futile because he finished his career playing for non-league side Aldershot Town. A career of brief jubilation coupled with team mates that kept him on the bench would ultimately end in Kitson never giving up his passion, football.

Liverpool set to cash in come January

Liverpool could be set to cut their loses and sell midfielder Christian Poulsen, despite only signing the player in August.

Brought in as a replacement for Javier Mascherano, Poulsen has only managed eight league appearances for the Reds and has struggled to achieve his best form this season.

It is believed that one of Poulsen’s former clubs, FC Schalke, is interested in signing the Danish midfielder for a price thought to be €3.5 million – around €1 million less that what Liverpool paid for him only four months earlier.

Poulsen arrived at Anfield with a very good reputation. Following a spell at then UEFA Cup champions Sevilla, he secured a big money move to Italian giants Juventus in 2008 where he stayed for two years.

The 2005 and 2006 Danish Player of the Year has failed to impose his style of play in the Premier League and has seem himself fall behind Raul Meireles in the starting XI so Roy Hodgson could be tempted to cash in on Poulsen in January.

Chelsea v Everton – Betting Tips, Odds and Specials

Everton put in their worst showing of the season at home to West Brom last weekend and they have now gone five games without a league win. David Moyes looks angry at the best of times and there will have been quite a few players trying to avoid making eye-contact with the fiery Scot this week.

A positive reaction will be demanded this week and the added motivation of playing away to Chelsea could see them getting something out of this game. Everton have a good record over the champions winning one and drawing three of their last four league meetings and Moyes’ anger will subside if they can earn a third consecutive draw at Stamford Bridge at 7/2.

Having been beaten so convincingly in their last home game their air of invincibility on their home patch has been shattered. It’s all sounding pretty positive for David Moyes and his side so far, except for the fact that those three vital players could all be set to return to the starting line-up this weekend, the Toffees have also won just once in their last five and they’re coming off a rather embarrassingly poor home defeat to West Brom.

One man who should be in the starting line-up is Louis Saha. The Frenchman hasn’t been at his best this season but he has scored four goals in the Merseysider’s last three games against the Londoners, as well as braces from his spells with Fulham and Manchester United. Considering the form of Moyes’ entire striking core these stats are as good a reason as any to give Saha a run out.

He’s 10/1 to score the first goal and 35/1 to score two or more. Football also has a habit of offering quick redemption so maybe Beckford can make amends by hitting the last goal at 12/1. If he makes the bench. Of course Tim Cahill has to be mentioned. He is 8/1 to score first

One thing last week’s result will ensure is a reaction from Moyes’ players and if they can dig in and frustrate Chelsea, then they could well come away with a positive result. Having edged last season’s meetings with a home win and a 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge, as well as holding them to two 0-0 draws the season before, Everton’s style of play is clearly one which Chelsea struggle against.

Everton +1 goal at 21/10, a shorter price than the draw but you’re covered on both the draw and an Everton win. Speaking of an Everton win, at 17/2 against an out-of-form Chelsea, it’s certainly worth at least a small punt

However, Everton are a side Chelsea don’t enjoy facing and a 1-1 draw 15/2 is a real and profitable possibility.

11Kicks House Team for Game Week 23. Can You Beat Them?

This is the 11Kicks house team for game week 23. Not just any game week, because this team will be playing in the private 11Kicks Fantasy Challenge League, which you can join by clicking the link and entering the access code at the top of this post. If you’re going to play against me, then you’ll want to know how I picked this team.

Young Wojciech Szczęsny (just 20 years old) is my keeper, basically because Arsenal are playing West Ham and Luis Fabianski is injured. Bit of a risk, but I still see Arsenal pummeling West Ham without conceding. My back three is Stoke’s Robert Huth (highest scoring central defender in the Premier League), Kolo Toure (because Man City are at home to Wolves) and Ashley Cole (because I don’t trust any other Chelsea defender).

In midfield I’m going for goals and assists. Obviously. My captain is recently crowned Premier League player of the month for December, Samir Nasri. Again, because I expect Arsenal to beat up West Ham, with Nasri doing most of the damage. No idea how that Spurs vs Manchester United game will go, so have picked both Rafael van der Vaart and Nani. Hopefully that has me covered one way or the other. There’s always the change that Kevin Nolan will repeat his hat-trick for Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby, so he’s in. Speaking of captains, Chris Brunt has just been handed the armband at West Brom. He’s also has the second most assists in the Premier League (just behind Nani).

Up front… how can you not pick Edin Džeko? Man City are playing Wolves at home, and the £27m man is making his debut. I’m a Wolves fan, and I’m still picking him. If only so that when he inevitably scores it will hurt a little less knowing my fantasy football points total just increased by three. My other pick is Fernando Torres. Obviously he’s not yet back to his best, and 11Kicks slagged him off in the blog post previous to this. But it’s still the Merseyside derby and he’s still Fernando Torres.

So that’s what you’re up against. Think you can beat it?

Play against the 11Kicks House Team this weekend:

Bruce delighted with Sunderland resilience

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was pleased with the way his side responded from a tough week to post a 2-1 win at Blackpool.

Two first-half goals from Kieran Richardson gave Sunderland the ascendancy before Charlie Adam’s late penalty ensured some nervy moments in the closing stages.

Bruce said he was delighted with the way the squad handled the departure of star striker Darren Bent, who signed for Aston Villa on Tuesday in a deal that drew criticism from Bruce and Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn.

“The players were determined. One player isn’t bigger than the club, especially ours with our history and tradition,” Bruce said.

“It’s about time we drew a line under everything now. It’s up to me to make sure what we do now is the right thing.”

“The one thing the squad needs today is a pat on the back. Every time we’ve come up against a bit of adversity we’ve come out firing.”

“We showed great resilience and arguably this was one of our best performances of the season.”

“In the first half in particular, the football was a joy to watch.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway, meanwhile, felt his side were unlucky not to take anything from the hard-fought encounter – in contrast to the 2-0 win his side enjoyed over Sunderland on December 28, a match Bruce’s men dominated.

“I think it’s ironic. In this game we probably deserved some points and (at) their place we probably didn’t,” Holloway said.

“But things conspired against us today. We had a few strange injuries and a few strange knocks.”

“Their first goal we only had ten men on the pitch because Neal Eardley took a boot in the face.”

“Obviously we had to take him off, we couldn’t stop his nose bleeding and they got a goal in that time.”

“But they’re a good side. We had better of second half and they scored two goals. They’re the only chances they had to be honest.”

Torres not the first and certainly won’t be the last

If I said to you a few weeks ago that Fernando Torres would join Chelsea in the January transfer window, you probably would not have believed me. The Liverpool striker had always shown signs of loyalty and gratitude in playing for such a prestigious football club with some of the best fans in the World. However, a transfer request by Torres and a few improved bids by Chelsea saw a record transfer fee in British football as Torres was sold for £50 Million.

It’s no secret that Torres’ performances for Liverpool this season have been below par for a player of his standard, however, he did not look like the same world class striker we know during the World Cup for Spain either. He had been struggling to find his form after coming back from injury and with the growing pressure on Liverpool with Roy Hodgson’s poor start – it seemed a big uphill battle for Torres. With Hodgson’s departure and Dalglish’s appointment, Torres looked like he had more urgency and many people credited King Kenny’s man management skills. However, it’s important to note that his change in form came at the same time the transfer window opened which suggests Torres may have been waiting for his opportunity for a move away.

Ex Liverpool players Phil Thompson and John Aldridge have branded Torres as a mercenary, saying he has just gone for the bigger wage. It wouldn’t be the first time a player has done this to a club, in particular Liverpool, remember when Michael Owen moved to Real Madrid despite his Liverpool past going back to the youth set up. Perhaps, non-Liverpool fans can understand Torres wanting away from the club that have been in free fall for the last 18 months. A player of his ability will want to play in the Champions League every season and his move in the January window will see him play in the biggest club tournament in football in a matter of weeks. Can you blame him?

Yes you can, considering the timing of Torres’ transfer request towards the end of the transfer window caused a shock around Anfield for a player that, despite performances, seemed happy and content to stay at the club and help them get back into the top four of the Premier League. It was a selfish move that put Liverpool in a position to only accept and say ‘yes’ – ironically just like Andy Carroll at Newcastle which the whole Torres situation caused.

In recent history we’ve seen other top players do the same like Emmanuel Adebayor at Arsenal and even more famously Nicolas Anelka when also at the Gunners. This season, Wayne Rooney handed in a transfer request back in October that shocked Manchester United – whereas United and Rooney’s future have been resolved, it’s another sign of a player making a u-turn on a club he’s committed to. Player contracts might be signed for three, four or five years but if they decide they want away then there is just no stopping them.

Jose does rivals a favour with Fabregas pursuit

You can see why Real Madrid are interested in signing Cesc Fabregas. He has shown he is a great player in the last few seasons. He is probably the only player, along with Xabi Alonso, who has the technical skill to rival Iniesta and Xavi.

If Mourinho is seeking to defeat Real Madrid’s biggest enemy, it will be on the battle ground of the midfield. With Xavi and Iniesta currently occupying both Spain and Barcelona’s midfield, Guardiola definitely has the upper hand. I doubt there would be many answers if I asked, who is better than Iniesta and Xavi at keeping possession in midfield?

A better two there may not be, but the pairing of Fabregas with Alonso at Real Madrid would be a great way to rival Barcelona. The two Spaniards are currently understudies in the national side, behind the Barca duo and would love to take over from them in the future I am sure. They may not be as light-footed as the current two, but they are equally gifted at passing the ball, and if anything more heavy weight in the tackle. The way Mourinho would like. With this in mind you can see why Real Madrid are so keen to sign Fabregas and stop him going to their fiercest rivals.

But, have Madrid chosen a bad time to declare interest?

[ad_pod id=’fox-mpu’ align=’right’]

People this week have pointed out that it is a bad time for Madrid to declare their interest in Fabregas as it will only help their rivals, Barcelona, beat Arsenal. If Fabregas is unsettled Barca have a greater chance of winning.

But maybe Madrid are doing this with one eye on their long term goal; to sign Fabregas. They know that Fabregas is hungry to win some silverware; they also know that Fabregas is unlikely to stay at Arsenal if they don’t win anything this year.

If Arsenal beat Barcelona they have a good chance of winning the whole competition. Wenger has said that this week. So, if they win the competition Fabregas is likely to stay at Arsenal. Madrid will never be able to sign him.

You might think I am being tenuous, but I think Madrid have targeted Fabregas this week, of all weeks, because they want to unsettle him. They want Arsenal to lose and they want Fabregas to look for a transfer away from the Emirates in the summer. If Fabregas fires this week and Arsenal succeed, they may be unlikely to ever sign him.

Furthermore, if Arsenal do lose to Barcelona this week, Madrid have placed themselves in opposition to Barcelona at a time when Fabregas will hardly be their biggest fan. If you are going to try and change a player’s childhood dream, you may as well do it when that very club has just knocked him out of Europe.

You might think that I am making this all up, but stranger things have happened. It would not be the first time that the sanity of the Real Madrid board has been brought into question. It is a great tactical move from the Madrid board and a play I would love to see pay off.

Real Madrid may be shooting themselves in the foot in the short-term, as they could help their rivals get to the next round of the Champions League. But it the long run, this could help secure the signature of one of the Premier League’s most prized assets.

One game at a time for Hodgson

Roy Hodgson is refusing to set West Brom a points target as he looks to drag the Baggies away from the relegation zone.West Brom are currently 17th with 28 points – just one off the bottom three ahead of Monday’s trip to Stoke. “It’s a little bit dangerous to start playing fantasy football and working out where you will get your points and other teams will drop their points,” Hodgson said.”For me the only thing we can do is take every game as it comes.””Traditionally we all think at the start of the season that 40 points will be enough, but there’s no guarantee, that 40 points will keep you in the league.”Stoke have built a reputation as a tough side to beat at home but Hodgson insists he will not change his tactics to suit their style of play.”Every week you play a team which has a slightly different focus to its play and normally when you start the week you tend to prepare your work around that focus,” he added.”It’s still important for us to do a load of things rights as far as we’re concerned, that we don’t change our game totally for the opposition, that we have a game of our own and a game plan of our own.”Hodgson has also reported he has no injury worries for the trip to the Britannia.

The Top 20 MVP’s in the Premier League – PART 2

Following on from part 1 of this list chronicling the 20 most valuable players in the Premier League, here comes part 2. I defined value in my earlier piece as a player of such importance to a side and their style of play, that it would be to the entire team’s detriment if they weren’t in the side. Sometimes it will be the club’s best player for obvious reason and other times it will not.

For some clubs it’ll be easier and for other more contentious. If I have made any heinous errors of judgement on your respective clubs’ most valued players let me know in the comments section below…

Wales suffer Bale setback

Wales have suffered a major blow with the news that Gareth Bale will miss Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against England.Bale, 21, has been forced to withdraw from the squad for the Group G match at the Millennium Stadium due to a hamstring problem.

The left-sided winger is believed to have been carrying the issue since playing for English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur against West Ham United last Saturday.

It was his first full 90 minutes since returning from a back injury suffered in January.

“Due to a hamstring problem, Gareth Bale has had to withdraw from the Wales squad to face England on Saturday,” the Football Association of Wales said in a statement.

“He felt tight last week during training with his club. After playing 90 minutes on Saturday he felt some muscle tightness.”

“Initially, this was expected to be muscle soreness after playing his first game.”

“On joining up with the Welsh squad he was kept off his feet in training for two days to recover.”

“As he still felt tight in the warm-up on Tuesday, Gareth was pulled out of the session. He did not train at all on Wednesday and was sent for a scan. The scan revealed that Gareth Bale picked up his injury last week.”

The loss of Bale will be keenly felt by Gary Speed’s young team.

Wales are bottom of the group after suffering three losses from three matches played so far in their qualification campaign.

Bale has returned to Tottenham for further assessment.

He is expected to be fit for Spurs’ next match away to Wigan Athletic on April 2, as well as the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid three days later.
