‘Six of the Best’ – Greatest Solo Goals of all time

In light of the launch of the new football gaming phenomenon that is ‘Goaldash’ I decided to look at the six greatest solo goals of all time.

Footballers around the world have graced the game with many fantastic solo goals. Most include mesmeric runs around defenders who just fall at their feet whilst others may include one or two slices of luck. But these are all goals that fans will never forget…

1.  Diego Maradona

This stunning effort in the 1986 World Cup is a goal few fans will ever forget, especially the English who were on the receiving end of a goal that often tops the ‘best of’ charts. Whilst the Argentine may also be remembered for another infamous strike, this one is by far the greatest solo goal of all time.

2.  Ryan Giggs

Giggs’ individual goal in 1999 was definitely a sign of the greatness to come from one of the Premier League’s most talented players ever. Taking on and beating the whole Arsenal defence is not an easy task but Giggs managed it with deadly ease and this goal will be fondly remembered as one of the defining moments in the English game.

3. Lionel Messi

Any list of the greatest solo goals would not be complete without a strike from the master of turning defences inside out, Lionel Messi. The Argentine is the current king of the spectacular and this goal against Getafe in 2007 sums up why Messi is the world’s greatest footballer.

4. Michael Owen

Whilst this goal may not be as mesmeric or spectacular as others, the way in which a young Michael Owen introduced himself onto the world stage with his amazing goal was worthy of a mention. Owen attacked the Argentine defence all by himself and stunned the 1998 World Cup with a sublime finish.

5. George Weah

Again this goal doesn’t include fantastic skill but Weah’s ability to run from his own penalty box, past a handful of defenders and then calmly slot the ball into the corner deserves a place in the best solo goal charts. He did get a couple of slices of luck along the way but it was still a fantastic effort from Weah for AC Milan against Verona in 1996.

6. John Barnes

Another fantastic individual goal that was partly one of the greatest solo goals for Barnes fantastic individual effort but also the setting in which he scored it. Barnes took on Brazil and beat them at their own game, dodging past defenders with ease to score this unforgettable goal in 1984.

So how does Goaldash work?

So what is Goaldash all about then?

Bored of playing the Lottery? Failing every week on the Pools? Then why not give ‘Goaldash’ a go – a football gamble with a difference.

‘Goaldash’ is a fabulous concept which fuses the Lottery format with pre-chosen football fixtures. Whereas you may use birthdays or your own favourite numbers to pick your six numbers, with ‘Goaldash’ you need to use your foresight of the Beautiful Game to select the six teams that are likely to score the quickest in the pre-selected 24 fixtures.

It only costs £1 a pop to enter and you have the chance to win a million pounds, every given week.

All you have to do is scour the 48 teams and pick out the 6 teams that are likely to score the quickest on the Saturday afternoon. The matches are chosen from the Premier League, the Football League, as well as the Scottish divisions therefore you will have plenty to work out and strategise before you make your selections.

Playing the Lottery has just got fun, especially as your odds are a damn sight greater.

Fancy your chances? Fancy winning £1million pounds? Why not give it a go!

Manchester United rule out loan deal

Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected Burnley’s bid to to take young Manchester United midfield star Paul Pogba on loan The Mirror reports.

Clarets boss Eddie Howe identified the 18-year-old Frenchman as he looks to inject some quality into his struggling side after a disastrous start to their Championship campaign.

He has been tipped to achieve great things at Old Trafford ever since signing for the club from Le Harve in 2009 with his performances for the under-18’s and reserve side haven’t gone unnoticed.

First team football has yet to come his way although he was on the bench for United’s FA Cup tie against Crawley Town and it seems he’ll have to wait a little longer for his first taste after Ferguson poured cold water on interest from Turf Moor.

The United boss told The Mirror: “It’s more difficult to loan a boy of 18 who’s come from France.

“We prefer to keep him with us until we find he’s mature enough to possibly go on loan.

“Maybe next year that could be an option, but we’re definitely expecting him this season to stay with Manchester United.”With Pogba now staying in Manchester it’s likely Howe will turn his attentions to other targets in a bid to ignite his sides season.

Why West Ham should have played hard ball

Another day and another gigantic bill faces the British taxpayer as the Government called off protracted buyout talks with West Ham United for the Olympic site. It means as first feared that the Stratford Stadium will become little more than an aging monument, no legacy and a whole bagful of regrets in a few years times. The bottom line is very few people care for Athletics in this country to warrant a stadium of such a size, in the post Olympic era.

The official word from Hugh Robertson is that the all the impending legal disputes, with regards to the potential acquisition of the stadium, had threatened to put the Olympic Legacy at risk. I maybe alone in thinking this but does anyone see the word ‘legacy’ as the simple way to justify the extortionate price this who event has cost. It is certainly the word that West Ham’s Karren Brady happily throws into every other sentence to ensure that the club’s intentions are looked on favourably. The fact remains that the decision to turn down West Ham’s bid has destroyed any hope of making this stadium a relative success and to ensure it doesn’t become little more than a relic.

Sentiment has paid far too big a price in the decision of what to do with this stadium. While Tottenham’s proposal to destroy the site in favour of a new state of the art stadium was met with such disdain; their promise to redevelop Crystal Palace and turn it into a world class Athletics arena for future events and meetings would certainly have fulfilled the legacy brief. Surely the whole purpose of a legacy was to ensure that budding athletes inspired by the Olympics will have the facilities in order to hone their skills, so why does this have to take place at the Stratford Stadium? Even with West Ham’s promises to ensure that the legacy is maintained, it appears it is not enough as the Olympic committee desperately trying to secure future events after 2012, as probably a way of appeasing the Government officials seething at the cost of the event.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

So where do we go from here? Apparently the committee will be seeking tenants for the stadium and West Ham have put their name in the ring, much to the pleasure of Hugh Robertson. I am not a Hammers fan myself, but this sounds a ridiculous situation where the football club will simply have no hold over the stadium, or be in a position to create an identity for themselves at the site. The club will be selling out big time, for the sake of playing in a soulless stadium. Maybe the Hammers would have been better off standing their ground here and refusing to bow down to the new terms on offer. The fact remains that due to Tottenham’s proposal being thrown out of the water that West Ham held the only hope of this stadium and surrounds being a profitable venture. The club should use that knowledge in their bargaining, to ensure this Olympic Stadium doesn’t become the relic I fear it will prove to be.

Caption Competition: Mancini’s Man City headache

In the Premier League, Manchester City have been almost unstoppable. After ten games they are still unbeaten, having won nine and drawn against Fulham. The Champions League has thrown up more of a challenge, but it appears to be one that Roberto Mancini’s men are starting to get to grips with.

After a draw against Napoli and defeat versus Bayern Munich, back to back wins against Villarreal at the Etihad Stadium and El Madrigal have put City in a good position in the so-called Group of Death. However, in Spain on Wednesday it wasn’t just the football that Mancini had to worry about, as the Italian banged his head on the dugout.

Coyle resigned to losing Cahill

Bolton manager Owen Coyle has admitted that Gary Cahill will most likely leave the club in the next 12 months, despite constant attempts by the Reebok Stadium outfit to keep their star man.

The England international is in the last year of his contract at The Trotters, and will become available on a free transfer come the summer.

Due to the fact that Bolton will not want to lose the central defender on a free transfer, a January sale looks likely as Coyle’s men look to reclaim some financial reward from the centre half.

“If something comes in, I think for Gary, for everybody, it’s probably better sooner than later,” Coyle told The Daily Mail.

“We all accept that if something is going to happen, it is best it isn’t dragged out. There will always be speculation about top players and Gary is certainly in that category.

“You can have a gut feeling about whether he will stay or go, but you could be totally wrong. I would imagine that if he is performing out of his skin, there will be a clamour of clubs for him, because of his contract situation,” he stated.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are all interested in Cahill, with a bidding war set to start come the new year.

Defoe enjoying pressure at the top

Jermain Defoe has admitted that he feels more pressure to perform due to Tottenham’s excellent 2011-12 campaign, and competing for the Premier League title is similar to representing England.

The diminutive marksman scored the only goal of the game on Tuesday night to give Spurs a hard fought 1-0 win over West Brom, and keep their ambitions of challenging the Manchester clubs for top spot alive.

Defoe is enjoying the added expectancy of the Tottenham fans, and wants to keep the good run of form going.

“I’m loving the pressure,” he admitted to Mirror Football.

“It’s like playing tournament football for England, when everyone is pinning their hopes on you to make the breakthrough.

“It means I have to make sure my preparation is right, that my attitude is right. Because I know how much it means to so many people.

“Everyone saw the tension at our place on Tuesday. The way that the fans, my team-mates and the manager and his staff celebrated when I got that goal and I enjoy being able to make that happen.

“That result on Tuesday shows that we are well and truly in the title race. The lads showed so much character to keep going when West Brom made it so hard for us.

“City and United know we are a threat, and with every game that we keep on winning we can put pressure on them to keep winning,” he concluded.

The TEN Premier League ‘youngsters’ who need to cut their teeth elsewhere

Premier League clubs are often guilty of being negligent towards their youngsters who seem to be given less of a chance each year with big money signings in transfer windows dropping them down the pecking order. But January seems the perfect opportunity to allow the youngsters to leave on loan and gain some much needed first team football.

Football fans often underestimate the challenge that youngsters have stepping up to play first team football at any level, let alone in the Premier League. It’s not just playing with and against quality players but its playing men’s football, something that youngsters may really take a while to come to terms with.

The likes of Daniel Sturridge, Jonjo Shelvy and Kyle Walker have benefited greatly from loan spells at both Championship and Premier League clubs and January is the time for more to follow in their footsteps. Here is a look at the top ten youngsters that need to cut their teeth elsewhere in January.

West Ham secure deal for Ravel Morrison

West Ham United have agreed a deal to sign Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison for an undisclosed fee according to the Daily Mail. The Championship club are understood to have managed to sign the precocious midfielder from under the noses of Premier League duo Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers, who both made bids earlier in the window. Morrison will join West Ham on a permanent deal, rather than a loan deal that was in the pipeline, and the move will give the 18-year-old to show just how good he is under the tutelage of Sam Allardyce.

It is thought that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was relatively keen to keep hold of Morrison, but the opportunity for first team football proved too strong for the youngster. The attacking midfielder is sure to please the Upton Park faithful with his style of football, but his development mentally will be just as important as time on the pitch. If all goes to plan for club and player then Morrison will be back in the Premier League next year plying his trade at the highest level with the Hammers.

Ruing the decision not to sign for Fergie? Dutch ace keen on United move – Best of MUFC

Manchester United fans will be delighted this afternoon as victory against their old North West rivals puts the Red Devils top of the table for 24hrs at least. Fergie was buoyant after the game however was a little disappointed that United didn’t win by a bigger margin given their dominance and the chances they have wasted today. Danny Welbeck in particular missed some gilt edged chances that could have put United out of sight.

It is 7pts out of a possible 9 in what has been a tough run of games for United and their current form will certainly put the fear in their title rivals at the top end of the Premier League.

At FFC this week we have seen a mixed bag of blogs that include Fergie’s fledglings management reports; blind faith at Old Trafford, while United would have proved the better move for Super Eagle.
