Rodrigo may follow Raphinha out of Leeds

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Leeds United striker Rodrigo will likely not be ‘willing to stay’ if the club gets relegated at the end of the season.

The Lowdown: Club-record signing

The 31-year-old first arrived at Elland Road from Valencia for what was a club-record fee of £26m back in 2020, where has since gone on to make 59 appearances for the Whites in all competitions to date.

As a result of the Yorkshire outfit’s recent 2-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal, and given the fact that Everton have had a positive turnaround in form, this means that Leeds have now dropped into the relegation zone ahead of Wednesday’s clash against Chelsea.

The Latest: Rodrigo could follow star trio

Leeds could face losing some of their stars if they are unable to maintain their Premier League status for yet another season, with Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Patrick Bamford all potentially leaving.

And O’Rourke has admitted that he thinks Rodrigo could be the fourth major exit.

He told GiveMeSport: “He is a quality player, Rodrigo. Leeds fans, I don’t think they’ve seen the best of him. If they go down, I think they might have a problem keeping him.

“He might have to be sold because he’s on big wages, and I’m not too sure if he would be willing to stay and play in the Championship.”

The Verdict: Great attacking threat

The £100k-per-week ace would be a huge loss to the Whites if he was to depart this summer, having made a total of 16 goal contributions during his time at the club so far.

The forward, who was once hailed as an “extraordinary” footballer by former Barcelona manager Quique Setien, has proven to be a real threat in the final third this season, where he has averaged 1.6 shots and 1.2 key passes per game in the top-flight, via WhoScored.

Should Leeds make the fall back down into the Championship, Rodrigo won’t be the only name whose future will be put under doubt, with the aforementioned trio even joined by Joe Gelhardt in recent exit reports, and relegation could now seriously damage the long-term future of the club.

In other news… the Whites are reportedly interested in signing a Premier League maestro this summer.

Aston Villa could save millions with Louie Barry

NSWE can save Aston Villa millions by finally unleashing 18-year-old Louie Barry next season as Steven Gerrard is a big fan of the teenage striker.

With the manager looking to stamp his authority on the squad during his first summer transfer window at the club, bringing through youth talents such as Barry would be a welcome move as well as adding in his own signings.

The youngster has had quite the footballing journey so far, starting off at West Bromich Albion before joining the famed La Masia academy at Barcelona, becoming the first Englishman to do so.

After a few months he joined Villa, with academy manager lavishing praise upon the highly regarded striker, dubbing him “outstanding” and he went and scored the winner for Aston Villa U23s in a match against Cardiff.

His development has continued this season with a disastrous loan spell at Ipswich – in which he struggled for much game time in League One – followed by a drop-down to League Two Swindon Town.

His performances for Swindon have been excellent, with an average SofaScore rating of 7.03 and a total of six goals scored in 14 matches, he has adapted to the fourth tier with ease.

Barry’s potential is huge and scoring goals is one way he’ll continue to take acclaim. One such plaudit came from Lee Hendrie who speaking to Football FanCast said he was like a “young Michael Owen.”

The stats above will no doubt please Gerrard, who made the choice to send the striker down to Swindon for him to get more game time.

There looks like a pathway for youngsters at villa Park, especially if they are talented enough. Just look at the likes of Jacob Ramsey, who only two years older than Barry, has made 31 appearances for the side this season in the Premier League.

With Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings being the only centre forwards in Gerrard’s squad, if Barry has a solid pre-season, then there may well be a fantastic opportunity ahead for the youngster.

Ex-Celtic hero loves PFA Team of the Year

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie is ecstatic that six Hoops players have made it into PFA Scotland’s Team of the Year for 2021/22.

The Lowdown: Hoops dominate Team of the Year

The Hoops are on the verge of being named the new Scottish Premiership champions, taking a six-point lead with them into the final three matches of the campaign.

Celtic’s dominance has now been recognised, with the news that Cameron Carter-Vickers, Josip Juranovic, Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor, Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi are all named in the Team of the Year.

All six have enjoyed superb seasons, playing a huge role in Ange Postecoglou’s side being so close to title glory.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-4/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: McAvennie reacts to news

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie couldn’t hide his delight at the news:

“I can’t believe it, if you told me six players would make it into the team of the year at the end of last season, I wouldn’t believe it. The team we had last year was rotten. In such a short time Ange has turned it around.

“If you look at those six, Juranovic, Jota, Kyogo and Carter-Vickers all came in this season. I can’t believe that. Four brand new signings all in the team of the season, it’s just, wow.

“That is down to Ange as well because he brought them in. He is the one to thank in all this.

“McGregor and Rogic have improved so much as well, all of them deserve it. I know it doesn’t really mean much but it’s just another sign for the incredible year we have had and hopefully it’s a good sign for the future.”

The Verdict: Richly deserved recognition

To see over half of the Team of the Year dominated by Celtic players is just reward for their efforts, with Postecoglou getting huge amounts out of his squad in his first season at Parkhead.

Carter-Vickers has been an influential figure on loan from Tottenham, averaging 4.1 aerial duel wins per game, while Rogic and McGregor have brought class and fight to the midfield.

Meanwhile, Jota has been another inspired loan signing, chipping in with 18 goal contributions in the league – nine goals and assists each – and both Juranovic and Kyogo have also done their bit for the cause at right-back and in attack, respectively.

Wolves boosted in Joao Palhinha chase

Wolves have been boosted in their efforts to sign Joao Palhinha in the summer transfer window, with Sporting CP reportedly willing to cash in on the midfielder.

The Lowdown: Wolves keen on Palhinha

Bruno Lage will be looking to make inroads in the transfer market this summer, ensuring his squad continues to go from strength to strength in the Premier League.

One player Wolves have been linked with signing numerous times is Palhinha, with the 26-year-old shining for Sporting this season, making six starts in the Champions League.

Ruben Amorim has described the midfielder as a ‘special’ player and Wanderers may have been boosted in their attempts to snap him up.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-the-latest-from-wolves-4/” title=”All the latest from Wolves!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: Wanderers boosted

According to Correio da Manha [via Sport Witness], Palhinha is at the ‘top of the list’ of players that Sporting are happy to sell this summer, in order to be boosted financially.

Not only that, but the report also states that it ‘seems impossible’ the Portuguese giants could now demand €40million (£33.5m) for his services, due to a dip in form. That means Wolves could sign him on the cheap.

[freshpress-poll id=“388780″]

The Verdict: Ideal Neves replacement

With Ruben Neves looking increasingly likely to leave Wolves at the end of the season, Palhinha looks like a tailor-made replacement for his compatriot.

He possesses Neves’ deep-lying expertise, enjoying an 87.4% pass completion rate in the Primeira Liga this season from that position, as well as winning 1.5 aerial duels per match.

Filling the void left in midfield will be vital if the expected exit does happen and Palhinha is surely the front-runner to solve that problem, especially if Wanderers could now sign him in a cut-price deal.

Rodrygo breaks silence on Real Madrid future with Tottenham ready to pay club-record fee

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo has been at the centre of reports that he could leave the Bernabeu mid-season following a lack of game time under Xabi Alonso, and Tottenham are believed to be among the contenders for his signature.

Rodrygo finds himself at a career crossroads as his situation at Madrid continues to deteriorate.

The Brazilian, once considered a crucial part of Los Blancos’ attacking plans, has seen his role dramatically diminish since Alonso’s appointment, sparking widespread speculation about a potential January departure.

Rodrygo has played just 359 minutes this season, having started just two out of a possible 10 La Liga games, and is firmly behind Vinícius Júnior in the pecking order for his preferred left-wing position.

The 24-year-old, who was regularly linked with a summer exit, including to Spurs, has struggled for opportunities despite his previous contributions to the club’s success.

ESPN Brasil have backed up the possibility that Rodrygo could leave in January, stating that the ex-Santos sensation is “dissatisfied with his situation” and “maintains the option” of leaving as early as the next transfer window.

This has put a host of Premier League sides on alert, including Tottenham once again, and there are suggestions that the north Londoners could go all out for his signature.

Now backed by the Lewis family as they attempt to usher in a post-Daniel Levy era, the club, led by co-sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange are apparently prepared to pay a club-record £70 million for Rodrygo, according to reports from Spain.

The £283,000-per-week star would be a statement signing for the Lilywhites, and reports suggest that Real are prepared to slash his asking price from their original £88 million summer valuation down to around £53 million, amid rival interest from Arsenal and Chelsea (TEAMtalk).

This means that Spurs’ mooted £70m stance would be more than enough, but none of this means anything without the player’s approval.

Indeed, Rodrygo has now moved to speak out about his Madrid future, attempting to quell the noise surrounding his unrest in the Spanish capital.

Rodrygo breaks silence on Real Madrid future amid Tottenham interest

Speaking to the media, Rodrygo has hinted at his unhappiness surrounding game time right now, but also suggests he has no fears when it comes to inclusion in Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.

While the attacker appears to be presenting the front of ‘I’ll work hard for the manager’, behind-the-scenes whispers tell a different story, and we wouldn’t at all be surprised if a Premier League club manages to tempt him across the channel.

Meanwhile, football finance expert Stefan Borson is convinced that Tottenham could sign Rodrygo on loan.

Tottenham take on Arsenal in a mouth-watering North London derby clash this weekend, with all eyes on that and the looming January window as Frank looks to put his stamp on the squad.

100% passing, 100% dribbles: Wolves star is as undroppable as Strand Larsen

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup last night with an excellent 2-0 win over fellow Premier League side Everton.

Goals from Marshall Munetsi and Tolu Arokodare secured the victory for Vitor Pereira’s side, in what was just their second triumph of the 2025/26 campaign to date.

No wins have yet come in England’s top-flight, but the prospect of a cup run could hand the fanbase a reason to be positive despite their dismal league form of late.

Such a performance was an excellent one against a side who have only tasted defeat twice in the same time period, with the draw for the next round taking place later on this evening.

Numerous players managed to impress, undoubtedly contributing to the win, but it was an uncharacteristically quiet evening for one of the club’s star men.

Jorgen Strand Larsen’s stats against Everton

Over the last year, striker Jorgen Strand Larsen has rapidly become one of Wolves’ most important players – often providing the goods at key moments.

He’s netted 16 goals in his 43 appearances for the club, even being subject to a £50m offer from Newcastle United – a bid that was swiftly rejected by the hierarchy.

The 25-year-old talisman has since penned a new contract with the club, even leading the line for Pereira’s in the meeting with the Toffees at Molineux last night.

Strand Larsen featured for 68 minutes of the contest, offering a key outlet at the top end of the pitch, completing 83% of the passes he attempted, whilst also winning 50% of the aerials he entered.

The Norwegian also achieved a 100% shot-on-target accuracy rate, along with three touches in the opposition area – but was unable to get on the scoresheet like he did in the previous round against West Ham United.

It was a disappointing evening on the whole for Strand Larsen, especially after Arokodare replaced him and scored, but one other player managed to star and is becoming as important as the aforementioned talent.

The Wolves star who’s becoming as important as Strand Larsen

There’s no denying that Wolves have fallen way below the expectations placed on them by the supporters over the last few months – with their start in the league nothing short of a disaster.

Five games and no wins could be a concern for the hierarchy, but everyone must get behind the side to overturn their recent slump in form on the pitch.

The performance against Everton will no doubt have injected confidence that the players are able to compete, especially against one of the form sides in the same division.

Such an outing gave numerous players to thrive and showcase their talents, with Brazilian midfielder Andre grabbing such an opportunity with both hands last night.

The 24-year-old has struggled for regular starts this campaign, only starting three out of the five outings, but his display last night was arguably his best of the current campaign.

He featured for a total of 87 minutes last night, but was forced off with an injury in the latter stages and was subsequently replaced by defender Emmanuel Agbadou.

However, his performance up until that point was simply sensational, subsequently completing 100% of the passes he attempted, along with a 100% dribble success rate.

Such numbers highlight how impressive he was in possession, often being the player to make the side tick during the excellent victory over David Moyes’ men.

Andre was just as impressive without the ball, subsequently making five tackles and two blocks, whilst also making one interception and five recoveries.

He also won 88% of the ground duels he entered, further showcasing his dominance without the ball, before motoring the side forward with his aforementioned tallies in possession.

To top off his incredible showing, the Brazilian was handed a superb 7/10 match rating by journalist Rajan Sangha – reaffirming how impressive his showing was in the West Midlands.

After such a performance, Pereira has no option but to start Andre on Saturday, when his side travel to the capital to face Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the bigger picture is only positive for the Brazilian star, now having the perfect opportunity to make himself one of the first names on the teamsheet along with Strand Larsen.

Virgil Van Dijk named "annoying" ex-Arsenal star his toughest opponent – not Messi

Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders of his generation. The Dutchman has won it all in English football and he has often done so without even breaking a sweat. But that doesn’t mean that he’s breezed through his time at Liverpool without squaring off against some incredibly difficult opponents.

The Premier League took a breath of anticipation when Erling Haaland and Van Dijk found themselves one-on-one at Anfield not so long ago in a battle that ended with the Norwegian’s wayward shot. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has never even scored against the towering Liverpool captain and many others have ended afternoons to forget in his ruthless grasp.

Endless players have endured their toughest games against Van Dijk and that includes Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who is now on loan at Barcelona. The England international name-dropped his former Premier League rival when asked about the most difficult defender he’s faced.

Whilst so many have struggled to leave their mark against Van Dijk, however, the same can’t be said for Lionel Messi. When an immovable object met an unstoppable force, Van Dijk may have come away with a shock victory courtesy of Liverpool’s dramatic Champions League comeback, but Messi still had his moment at the Nou Camp – scoring twice.

The fact that one of this generation’s greatest defenders could not keep Messi quiet sums up just how other-wordly the Argentine icon is, more than it sums up Van Dijk’s own shortcomings on a difficult evening. But the Dutchman, to his credit, was not fooled twice by Messi’s magic and sent him crashing out of the Champions League in historic fashion in the second leg.

That Nou Camp thrashing courtesy of Messi will be one that Van Dijk remembers even to this day, but it wasn’t enough to make the Barcelona legend his toughest opponent. Instead, the central defender dropped an unexpected name.

Van Dijk names "annoying" Giroud as toughest opponent

Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Van Dijk named Olivier Giroud as his toughest opponent despite having squared off against the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Haaland.

Olivier Giroud

The Liverpool captain looked back on the Frenchman’s knack for a goal against the Reds before labeling him an “annoying” striker to play against.

Although Messi seems the obvious choice, the fact that Giroud has scored three goals in five games against Van Dijk throughout his career makes him a worthy candidate for his toughest opponent.

BBC journalist shares "information" about Gyokeres or Sesko joining Arsenal

Arsenal’s summer striker search is set to be one of the major topics for discussion in N5, with two big-names in Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko rumoured to be Andrea Berta’s top two targets.

Arsenal hold talks over signing Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko

Reports from reliable media sources indicate that this centre-forward duo feature the highest on Berta’s striker target list.

Sesko is fresh off the back of a career-best Bundesliga campaign with Leipzig – bettering his 2023/2024 tally with 21 goals in all competitions – while Gyokeres has quite simply been unstoppable with 54 goals in total across 24/25.

Berta has held extensive talks over a move for Gyokeres (Florian Plettenberg), but Arsenal have also since begun concrete negotiations for Sesko as well – leading to some confusion over who the club’s main target actually is.

Sky Germany’s Plettenberg reported last week that their focus is on both men, but either deal would prove to be “extremely expensive”, prompting Berta to consider the two options very carefully.

Either way, another reliable journalist in David Ornstein fully expects one of Gyokeres or Sesko to seal a switch to Arsenal last summer.

“They’ve got a decision to make between Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig and Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon, both fantastic options and talents,” said Ornstein to NBC Sports.

“I do expect one of them to come into the Emirates Stadium this summer.”

BBC journalist shares update on Arsenal signing Sesko or Gyokeres

Responding to this burning question in a Q&A, about whether Arsenal are going to sign Sesko or Gyokeres, the BBC’s Sami Mokbel has shared “information” on Arsenal’s talks for the pair.

He says that Arsenal are attempting to confirm the “frameworks” when it comes to deals for Sesko or Gyokeres, before they make a final decision on who to go for.

“In terms of Gyokeres or Sesko – my information is that the club are working towards confirming the frameworks of both deals before making a final decision on which to proceed with,” said Mokbel.

“Sesko has near-universal backing at the Emirates but, crucially, will be the more expensive deal. Gyokeres’ chances of moving to Arsenal have increased since Andrea Berta’s appointment as sporting director. Price is key here. Sesko ticks many boxes in terms of profile, he is younger than Gyokeres and plays in a stronger league (the Bundesliga) according to recruitment data. But some of the reported figures indicate he could cost £93million.

“Gyokeres is more economical, but would see the club divert from their longer-term strategy given Sesko has always been a target.”

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskocelebrates

Sesko already rejected a move to Arsenal last summer, so he’s been a long-term target for Arteta, pre-dating Berta’s arrival as sporting director.

Given just how highly the Spaniard must rate him, splashing in around £93m for the 22-year-old would be a real show of backing to their manager by the Arsenal board.

Simeone personally wants Atletico Madrid to sign £150k-p/w Aston Villa star

As their profit and sustainability (PSR) concerns continue to steal the headlines, Aston Villa could yet lose one of Unai Emery’s most important players amid reported interest from Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid.

Players Aston Villa could sell this summer

On paper, it’s easy to assume that Villa are in one of their strongest positions that they’ve ever been in the Premier League. But as impressive as Emery’s side have been on the pitch, that success hasn’t been without sacrifice away from the pitch. Financially speaking, the Villans are still not a European superpower and are likely to pay the price for spending like one this summer.

Emery loves him: Aston Villa chasing a "special" £55m Rashford replacement

Aston Villa may have to replace Rashford this summer.

ByJoe Nuttall May 21, 2025

PSR rules state that clubs are not allowed to hit £105m in losses over the course of a rolling three-year period and whilst Aston Villa’s accounts are yet to be published detailing their concern, reports have suggested that they could need to sell at least one star player before the end of June to comply with the rules.

BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty spoke about Villa’s concern in a recent Q&A session, saying: “Aston Villa may have to do deals to fend off any lingering PSR concerns, but I think the club are in safe hands with the current ownership and those sales will be smart without weakening the squad.

“We have even seen Morgan Rogers linked with Chelsea, but I do not see Villa entertaining that sort of deal as they want to push on from what Unai Emery has already achieved.”

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers

Although it may not be Rogers, as McNulty notes, it could yet be the likes of Jacob Ramsey or even Ollie Watkins who head for the exit door this summer amid recent links with Arsenal and Chelsea. The same, meanwhile, can be said for arguably one of Emery’s most important stars.

Simeone personally eyeing Emi Martinez

According to Spanish outlet AS, Diego Simeone now personally wants Atletico Madrid to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa this summer. The £150,000-a-week goalkeeper has found himself at the centre of the transfer headlines this week after he appeared to bid a tearful goodbye to the home fans following the victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

What should only add fuel to the fire is the fact that Emery didn’t deny that Martinez’s exit is a possibility this summer, telling reporters after the Spurs game: “We will see. Of course, it is the last match here [this season], and I don’t know. We will see about the team, the players, but of course, they are responding on the field.”

It’s not just Atletico Madrid who have been linked with the World Cup winner, either. Reports have also suggested that both Manchester United and Barcelona are chasing Martinez’s signature ahead of what could be a long summer saga for Aston Villa.

The dream Firpo replacement: Leeds plotting move for "phenomenal" £17m star

Leeds United have the opportunity to cement their place in the Premier League next season, ending their two-year exile from the top-flight after promotion from the Championship.

The Whites will need to invest heavily in the playing squad to hand Daniel Farke the chance to consolidate next year, in what’s likely to be an extremely difficult campaign.

The last six teams who have achieved promotion to such a division have all been relegated the following year, with the German aiming to be the man to buck such a trend.

Daniel Farke

However, if he is to achieve such a feat, he will need to be brutal with his squad, cutting players out and signing top-level talents to boost his ambitions of achieving his goal.

With the summer window rapidly approaching, the manager and the hierarchy have already wasted no time in identifying players who could bolster the side at Elland Road.

Leeds’ pursuit of new signings this summer

Even though the transfer window isn’t officially open yet, Leeds have already made moves for multiple players to try and provide needed talent and depth to key areas of the squad.

It was reported in recent days that they had made contact to sign Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters this summer, with the 28-year-old’s deal at St Mary’s set to expire at the end of June.

Southampton'sKyleWalker-Petersapplauds their fans after the match

However, the opposite side of the pitch has also been one of interest, with the Whites earmarking Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas as a summer target, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims that the Reds are open to allowing the 29-year-old Greek international to depart this summer, potentially moving in a double deal with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher during the off-season.

It also states that he may want to leave Anfield this summer to gain valuable first-team minutes elsewhere after starting just eight league games under Arne Slot in 2024/25.

Why Leeds’ target would be the dream Firpo replacement

Junior Firpo has set the Championship alight this campaign, playing a vital role at both ends of the pitch in the club’s success and ability to claim promotion.

The Dominican international featured in 32 league matches this season, registering 14 combined goals and assists, a simply staggering tally for a left-back.

However, the 28-year-old’s future looks up in the air this summer, with his contract set to expire at the end of June, with no new deal appearing on the horizon.

He’s since been touted with a return to former club Real Betis this summer, which could see his four-year spell in Yorkshire conclude in the coming weeks.

However, whilst supporters would be devastated, they shouldn’t worry, with a deal for the £17m-rated Tsimikas allowing them to forget about the departing full-back.

When comparing the pair’s respective figures from the recent campaign, the Liverpool star has managed to outperform him in numerous key areas – offering Farke the added quality he’s been searching for in the defensive department.

The Greek star, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by one journalist, may have registered fewer combined goals and assists, but has registered more progressive passes and more passes into the final third – highlighting the threat he poses with the ball at his feet.

He’s also completed more of the passes he’s attempted and registered a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate – still handing Farke an excellent attacking option.

However, defensively, Tsimikas has dominated, winning more tackles per 90 and making more interceptions – offering added defensive quality to a backline which will come under huge pressure in the Premier League.

Any deal for the Liverpool ace would be one that could allow for an excellent option at full-back for the manager, also offering him the needed top-flight experience within the squad.

Whilst a new deal for Firpo is something which most supporters want, the 29-year-old offers a superb alternative should the Dominican depart Elland Road this summer.
