Uh oh: Burnley have suffered "big injury" to "electric" 27 y/o before Leeds

Burnley have suffered a "big injury" to a first-team player ahead of their Championship clash with Leeds United, manager Scott Parker has confirmed.

Burnley face huge Leeds clash

The Clarets return to league action with a high-profile meeting with Leeds on Saturday lunchtime, in what promises to be a testing game off the back of the international break.

Burnley were among the leading candidates to secure promotion to the Premier League at the start of the season, and the early signs suggest that they may well be right in the mix. Parker's side are sixth in the table after four matches, and while points have been dropped twice, it would be a surprise if they weren't at least in and around the playoff positions throughout the campaign.

As for Leeds, they are one point and two places ahead of the Clarets in fourth, even though Daniel Farke has found himself under pressure at times. Saturday's clash at Elland Road may tell us a lot more about both teams, with an away win at a daunting ground acting as a real signal of intent by Burnley.

Parker has been handed an injury blow in the lead-up to the weekend action, however, with one important player set for a lengthy period on the sidelines.

Parker confirms "big injury" to Burnley ace

Speaking ahead of the Leeds game, with quotes provided by The Burnley Express, Parker confirmed that Manuel Benson won't be available after picking up a "big injury", with "months" on the sidelines looking possible:

"Benny has got a bit of a big injury, so he won’t be around for a number of weeks, maybe months. That’s the big disappointment from the [Blackburn] game regarding Benny in that sense, having come on, but hopefully he can recover as quickly as possible but we won’t be seeing him for a little while. It’s his calf/his achilles. We’ve obviously scanned him and there’s obviously a problem there. He’s going to need time now to recover and get it right to re-boot him up and get him ready for when he’s fit."

Manuel Benson

Benson may not be one of the first names on Parker's team sheet, being limited to 10 minutes of Championship action so far this season, but losing him for such an extended period of time is far from ideal.

Squad depth is so vital in the Championship, given the relentless nature of the fixture schedule, so suddenly not having the 27-year-old to call upon for much of the remainder of the year isn't ideal.

Benson has done well in a Burnley shirt since arriving from Royal Antwerp in 2022, scoring 13 goals in 47 appearances, while Sam Parkin has hailed him as "electric" in the past, highlighting what a big miss he is going to be.

Hopefully, the Clarets will cope without him, still sitting pretty near the top of the Championship table upon his return, before he has a big impact later in the season.

Club chief wants to attempt to sign "incredible" Man Utd ace post-deadline

Despite the summer transfer window coming to a close in England, Manchester United could still lose one of Erik ten Hag's midfielders amid interest from a European side.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils, on paper at least, can dub this summer a success, having welcomed defensive reinforcements in the form of Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazaroui and Matthijs de Ligt; an attacking addition in Joshua Zirkzee; and a potential solution to their midfield problem in Manuel Ugarte. Arriving on deadline day, the Uruguay international could make an instant impact to end United's Casemiro issue in the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, on the departures front, the Red Devils' two major exits were Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho, who left for Napoli and Premier League rivals Chelsea respectively.

Jadon Sancho in action for Man United in the Premier League.

However, that could yet change, with Belgium's extended transfer window compared to England's potentially resulting in yet another Old Trafford exit. According to Belgian outlet Het Belang van Limburg (via Sport Witness), Anderlecht CEO Jesper Fredberg now wants to make a "persistent attempt" to sign Christian Eriksen before Belgium's deadline on 6th September.

Eriksen's exit after England's deadline would be quite the twist, of course, given that Manchester United reportedly rejected Real Betis' attempt to sign the Dane on loan late in the window due to his place in Ten Hag's plans.

However, at 32 years old and with just one year left on his current Old Trafford contract, it's now or never for the Red Devils to cash in, potentially presenting Anderlecht with an opportunity to get their man.

With options such as Mason Mount, Casemiro, Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes all ahead of Eriksen in the pecking order, the argument could be made that United are better off cashing in on the veteran midfielder in the coming week.

Man Utd should cash in on "Incredible" Eriksen

There was once a time when many believed Eriksen's career in football was over after his on-pitch collapse at Euro 2020, only for the midfielder to make an extraordinary comeback at Brentford and earn his way back to the top in a move to Manchester United. The Dane has been at the centre of one of football's most admirable stories in the last four years, but it is a story that he can tick off as complete in the Premier League.

At 32 years old, United would be wise to cash in amid Anderlecht's reported attempts, in a move that would see Eriksen become one of the main men one last time in Europe.

The former Tottenham Hotspur star earned the praise of Thomas Frank during his short but impressive Brentford spell. The Bees boss said after Eriksen made his comeback (via talkSPORT): "I would say incredible, I would say the 90 minutes [was] fantastic.

"As I said earlier and in some of the press conferences, it would take him some time to get up to that top level. But you still saw three, four, five top actions, I think the delivery for the first goal, I think there were some balls in behind for his teammates where you could just see 'wow, that’s another level'. But also in situations where he could have done a bit better, done better on the ball, which is good."

Bid sent: Nottingham Forest make offer to sign "special" £47k-p/w defender

Nottingham Forest have reportedly tabled an offer to sign a breakthrough star who impressed at EURO 2024 and has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester United this summer.

Nottingham Forest hoping for improved showing

With just a week to go until the new Premier League season kicks off, Nottingham Forest and Nuno Espírito Santo will be hoping for a better season than the one they endured in 2023/24. The Reds, who kick off their new campaign against Bournemouth, only confirmed their top flight status for this season on the final day of the last campaign, sending Luton Town back to the Championship instead.

ByEthan Lamb Aug 7, 2024

In the months since, they have added slowly but surely to their ranks, with their major business coming in the form of signing Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United in a £35m deal, along with Nikola Milenkovic for £12m from Serie A side Fiorentina.

They have also bolstered their frontline with the signing of Jota Silva from Vitoria in a deal thought to have set them back around £6m.

Jota Silva

Business is still expected before the transfer window shuts on August 30th though. As per the reliable John Percy "Forest will look to make further additions" with the "priority" being "two wingers, a forward, a left-back and another goalkeeper" in the final weeks, though they have since added Jota to satisfy one of those targets. Now, they could sign a player who would fill several of those positions.

Forest table bid for Fenerbahce star

That comes as Turkish media report that Nottingham Forest are among the sides to have made an offer for Turkey star Ferdi Kadioglu, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League all summer.

The 24-year-old impressed at EURO 2024 for his nation, helping them to the quarter finals of the competition before they exited at the hands of the Netherlands. He played every minute of the competition at both left-back and left-midfield.

Former teammate Ole Romeny, who played with him at NEC Nijmegen, described him as a "special" talent who is a "top" left back: "The absolute top. He is also special as a left-back, there is no one with those footballing qualities."

Though ostensibly a left-sided player, Kadioglu is one of the most versatile players in Europe, having played across midfield and in both fullback positions so far in his career.

Kadioglu still has two years left to run on his £47k per week deal in Turkey, but that has not stopped interest in his services and Sabah report that Forest have tabled an offer for his services, alongside south coast pair Brighton and Southampton.

There is no mention of how much this offer amounts to, but it is claimed that his current side value him at around 35m euros (£30m) and that the player is keen to play in England despite Fenerbahce being keen to keep him.

Should he prove a competent Premier League level footballer in all of those positions, then £30m could be a cheap way to boost a whole host of depth issues in Nuno's ranks ahead of the new season.

Liverpool could ditch Diaz with move for exciting £40m winger

More than a few eyebrows were raised on Merseyside when it was claimed that Liverpool forward Luis Diaz had agreed a contract with one of the club's Premier League rivals.

Journalist Marcos Benito reported that the Colombia international had reached an agreement on a five-year deal with reigning champions Manchester City.

The reporter added that Pep Guardiola's side were prepared to offer a fee in the region of €70m (£60m) to snap him up from Anfield this summer.

Liverpool player Luis Diaz

It did not take long, though, for that rumour to be rubbished as The Athletic's Sam Lee, who covers the Cityzens, confirmed that there was no truth in the speculation.

Luis Diaz's future at Liverpool

Speaking on The Anfield Agenda, journalist David Lynch revealed that, despite reports of City's interest, Liverpool are open to cashing in on the winger this summer.

The reporter claimed that the Reds would be willing to move the former Porto star on before the end of the transfer window if they can get a replacement in with more attacking output on the flank.

With this in mind, Arne Slot could brutally ditch Diaz, if there is a team that is genuinely interested in signing him, by swooping for reported target Johan Bakayoko.

Johan Bakayoko for PSV

The Mirror recently reported that the PSV forward is a long-term target for Liverpool as they eye up players who could come in to bolster their options on the flanks.

A possible fee of between £35m and £40m was reported earlier this summer but it remains to be seen how much the Reds would be willing to pay for his services.

Why Liverpool should sign Johan Bakayoko

Liverpool should sign Bakayoko to provide Slot with a natural alternative to Mo Salah on the right flank, as another left-footed right-sided winger.

That would then leave Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo who can all play on the left side of the front three, whilst all three of them can also play as the central striker.

Brutally ditching Diaz from the squad to bring in the PSV starlet could, therefore, provide Slot with more balance in his options across the frontline.

As you can see in the table above, Bakayoko significantly outperformed the Colombian winger in the final third, albeit in a different division, with more goals, big chances created, and assists in fewer league appearances.

Whilst Diaz underperformed his xG by almost four goals, the PSV whiz outperformed his by just over three. This suggests that the Belgium international is a ruthless finisher who could make the most of the chances that Liverpool create, which cannot be said of the current Reds man.

Bakayoko, who was described as "fun to watch" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, is also six years younger than the Colombia international, which means that he has far more time on his hands to develop and improve, whilst seemingly having the potential to offer more quality at the top end of the pitch.

Therefore, Slot must ruthlessly ditch Diaz from his squad this summer, if possible, and replace him by landing the 21-year-old star to compete for a place out wide.

Liverpool now "super confident" of signing "fantastic" £65m Euro 2024 star

Liverpool are believed to be "super confident" of completing the signing of a "fantastic" player in the summer transfer window, with a £65m deal possible.

Liverpool transfer news

With Euro 2024 done and dusted, attention is now more likely to turn to transfers, with Arne Slot no doubt desperate to bring in new players who can aid his start to life at Anfield.

Two England players who have been linked with summer moves to Liverpool are Marc Guehi and Anthony Gordon, both of whom have been a part of their Euro 2024 journey this summer. The former is a boyhood Reds supporter, but Newcastle United are thought to be desperate to keep hold of him.

Liverpool target Anthony Gordon in action for England at EURO 2024.

It has also been claimed that the Merseysiders have made progress in their efforts to sign Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio, with a £52m transfer mooted. Centre-back additions are vital, with Slot's squad looking slightly light in that area, and the Portuguese could be a perfect addition.

Eberechi Eze has been mentioned as a possible target for Liverpool, too, should Slot feel that the Crystal Palace star could be an upgrade on Luis Diaz out on the left-hand side.

Liverpool believe they could sign "fantastic" ace

According to a fresh claim from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are "super confident" of completing the signing of Guehi in the summer transfer window, with the Crystal Palace and England defender a wanted man after impressing at the Euros.

The Reds are "set to ramp up their pursuit" of the 23-year-old, with sources close to the club saying they "know what they need to do" to get their man. He is valued at £65m by the Eagles.

Guehi's rise in recent months has been huge, considering he has gone from being a good Premier League player to arguably England's most consistent performer at Euro 2024.

The 23-year-old filled in expertly alongside John Stones, playing a big role in the Three Lions reaching the final, with an average of 2.2 aerial duel wins and two clearances per game. He also completed 93.5% of his passes, while Kyle Walker has heaped praise on him.

"Marc, I thought he was fantastic. He didn't put foot wrong and hopefully that has got his feelings right now and settle the nerves a little bit, and we can form a good partnership along that back line."

For these reasons, it is easy to see why Guehi would be a good signing for Liverpool, with his age meaning he could even be looked at as an option to eventually lead the defence when 33-year-old Virgil van Dijk eventually departs.

That being said, the Dutchman is also a left-sided centre-back, so fitting both he and Guehi into the team from the off may not be easy, which could suggest a right-sided signing makes more sense currently, unless one of the players wants to change sides.

There is also a risk that the Palace man's performances this summer could actually lead to him being over-priced, so it is important that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are convinced that he is their top target.

Romano: Man Utd still "waiting" as Yoro not actually ready to take medical

After completing a deal to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, Manchester United shifted their focus towards signing Leny Yoro, but now face a hold-up for his medical despite initial reports.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils finally got their summer business underway by signing Zirkzee in a deal worth a reported £37m, as Erik ten Hag looks to put an end to his side's attacking problems ahead of next season. At 23 years old and fresh from an impressive campaign in Serie A with a Bologna side who shocked Italian football by qualifying for the Champions League, the pressure will certainly be on Zirkzee to hit the ground running at Old Trafford.

After officially putting pen to paper, Zirkzee told Manchester United's official website: "Having had discussions with the manager and the leaders of the club I know how exciting the future is going to be here and I cannot wait to play my part in achieving success for Manchester United.

"I am a player who has always dedicated everything to winning; I’m ready for this next challenge, to go to another level in my career and win more trophies."

Joshua Zirkzee

The Red Devils haven't stopped there though, having moved on and reportedly agreed a deal worth €62m (£52m) to sign Yoro from Lille. Whilst David Ornstein initially reported that the 18-year-old was on his way to Manchester to complete a medical, Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that Manchester United are still "waiting" for approval to complete that crucial next step.

The plans for the medical are in place so things can go through quickly if everything becomes agreed, but as of right now, the Red Devils have not received the full confirmation needed from Yoro's camp to go ahead with those tests.

In a frustrating twist, those at Old Trafford must now act with patience, before they finally get the chance to welcome their potential new star once those last few details are rubber stamped.

"World-class" Yoro is on his way to the top

For Manchester United to win the race for Yoro's signature ahead of Real Madrid is some statement of intent and there's not many doubts that the teenager is destined for the very top. At just 18 years old, the Frenchman will be tasked with replacing Raphael Varane and stepping into Ten Hag's side to form what the Red Devils will hope to be an impenetrable partnership with one of Harry Maguire or Lisandro Martinez next season.

Keeping up with a serial winner in Varane at such a young age shouldn't be looked past. Described as "world-class" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, Yoro, if the deal goes through, could quickly turn into one of the biggest transfers of the summer in the Premier League. Manchester United look set to make quite the statement barring any last minute hiccups.

Everton eye move for "courageous" £45k-p/w man who refused a new contract

Despite previously struggling with financial sanctions, Everton look set to open their chequebook this summer and reward Sean Dyche with a slew of fresh faces this summer.

Toffees want reinforcements in midfield

The latest rumours out of Merseyside suggest that the Toffees view improvements in the middle of the park as their top priority during the transfer window. Recent news has seen Everton linked with a move for Aston Villa's Tim Iroegbunam, who could be available for as little as £10 million this summer.

Everton now "most likely destination" for "really good" £50k-p/w midfielder

He has 22 caps for Brazil.

ByJosh Barker Jun 18, 2024

Joining Iroegbunam on the Toffees' shopping list is French duo Matteo Guendouzi and Khephren Thuram. Whilst Guendouzi will be a familiar name among English fans owing to his time at Arsenal, Thuram is something of an unknown entity to much of the Goodison faithful having spent his whole career to date in France.

Whichever midfielder arrives at Everton is likely to replace Amadou Onana. The Belgian has long been linked with a move away from Merseyside with the most recent developments suggesting a race between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal for his signature. The Toffees are reportedly asking for a fee in the region of £50 million for Onana's services, meaning that they won't be short of funds to buy a replacement.

Amadou Onana for Everton

With this in mind, it now appears that Everton are looking to take advantage of a player's contract situation in order to sign a highly rated player for a cut-rate price.

Everton have an eye on Belgian midfielder

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Belgian press are stating that Everton are just one of many clubs keeping an eye on VFL Wolfsburg midfielder Aster Vranckx.

The outlet goes on to report that Wolfsburg have been unsuccessful in extending the Belgian's contract which is due to expire in the summer of 2025. Because of this, it’s said that the Bundesliga side 'can’t be greedy' about the sale and should look to get a fee for Vranckx rather than letting him leave for free at the end of next season.

aster-vranckx-premier-league-burnley-transfers

With Wolfsburg clearly eager to sell, the Toffees look set to face stiff competition to secure the services of the midfielder. The report cites Italian sides Napoli and Fiorentina as interested in agreeing a deal, meaning that Everton will have to move quickly if they are to get the signing over the line.

The 21-year-old featured 26 times for Wolfsburg last season, however struggled with injury during the latter half of the campaign. Despite this, the midfielder has proven his quality on multiple occasions, earning himself a call up to Belgium's Euro 2024 squad.

His time in Germany has also seen him earn praise from his former coach Florian Kohfeldt, who said that the player is "unexcited, courageous, allows himself to be played to in pressure situations" and "plays like a 25-year-old”.

If Everton are to ramp up their pursuit of Vranckx, they would likely get themselves a bargain owing to Wolfsburg's clear need to sell this summer. Alongside this, the Toffees would need to cover the Belgian's wages with the midfielder currently earning a reported £45,000 per week.

With Onana likely to depart this summer and the need for fresh faces clear, Everton could do a lot worse than signing a highly rated talent that could go on to look like one of the bargains of the transfer window.

Shimron Hetmyer – 'Ricky Ponting helping me become a better finisher'

West Indies batsman also learning to play the pull shot better

Hetmyer came out to bat with a gameplan – Dasgupta

Learning the art of playing a perfect pull shot from the peerless Ricky Ponting is a dream that Shimron Hetmyer is living during his stint with the Delhi Capitals. The West Indies batsman showed glimpses of his destructive self during his 24-ball-45 knock against Rajasthan Royals on Friday. The first of his five sixes was a pull shot executed to perfection.”It’s been fun to be around Ricky,” he told PTI. “A very good guy. He is right now working on my pull shot. He has observed that in last few games, people have been bowling short to me. So far he is working on my pulling and he has done one hell of a job with me. He is teaching me the art of being a better finisher and I am getting there gradually.”Hetmyer has been tasked to bat in the death overs at the Capitals, something he’s still coming to grips with. “The role of a floater is not something that I was accustomed to really. I am still working towards getting better with each and every game,” he said. “What I try to do now is to ensure that every game, I have to hit a six. At least, one six. Working towards that at moment.”.Hetmyer is a much better player of spinners among his Caribbean contemporaries, something he attributes to growing up in Guyana, which back in the day used to be one place that assisted slow bowlers.”It could be, yes I agree,” he said. “The pitches in Guyana are pretty similar to what we get here and in the Indian subcontinent with regards to spinners. I had no choice but to adjust to it and get better. Playing spinners from an early age helped me get better and then coming to international cricket, it helped that I was able to rotate strike if the sixes are not coming.”He is a couple of months short of his 24th birthday and has already become a vital player across formats for the West Indies. He admits to have been surprised at how quickly he has transitioned to where he is today.”Probably, I moved a bit faster (transition) than I expected to be honest,” he said. “I didn’t expect to be where I am at the age of 23 actually but I thank God everyday and all the people, my support system who have helped me to reach where I am today. There have been ups and downs. but ups mostly. I am working at getting better and finishing more games for my team or at least get them to winning positions.”A junior World Cup in his bag as a captain, does West Indies captaincy cross his mind? “I try not to think about West Indies captaincy that much. But if I am honest, it will always be at the back of my mind somewhere. Everyday, I wake up, I only think about cricket and get better at my game,” he said.Delhi Capitals’ core is pretty young with 23-year-olds Hetmyer, Rishabh Pant, 25-year-old skipper Shreyas Iyer, pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada who is also of same age and opener Prithvi Shaw, weeks short of his 21st birthday.Having peers around helps when one needs to stay put in a bio-bubble, which is not the case for fun-loving blokes in their early 20s.”It’s been pretty tough personally. I am someone who likes to go shopping and stuff. Being locked up and not being able to go out see this sights has been a little bit tough for me.”It’s been better, having good friends around, having a young team also helped me a little bit more free. Us being basically the same age group, it helps a lot to have all those guys around.”

Man Utd in talks to sign "magic" star who could be their answer to Foden

After a long campaign filled with disappointment and frustration, Manchester United ended the 2023/24 season in triumph.

Erik ten Hag’s side played with belief and togetherness, which helped them lift the FA Cup over Manchester City while also securing them a spot in the Europa League for next season.

This wasn’t only a massive boost for the squad, but it also gave Sir Jim Ratcliffe a better chance at acquiring his targets, with the benefit of playing in Europe now also a selling point.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a long-term Man United target who could just become their own version of Phil Foden.

Man Utd’s search for a new attacker

As per a report from TEAMtalk, Man Utd will look to make Michael Olise one of their first signings under the reign of Ratcliffe.

At this moment in time, the Red Devils are “leading the race for him,” having already made numerous contacts with the French forward’s representatives. It’s stated talks will continue to take place over the coming weeks.

Crystal Palace's Michael Olise

However, Chelsea are also desperate to make Olise one of the key players in their rebuild, which could become an issue for United.

Nonetheless, in order to drag the star away from Crystal Palace, teams must pay his £60m release clause, which may give United an advantage as the Blues could turn to alternatives.

How Olise compares to Foden

Man City’s Foden has truly developed into a world-class star over the last few seasons in particular, becoming a true winner who has led his club to continuous success.

The number 47 has been instrumental this season, especially in the top flight, helping City to their fourth consecutive title and claiming the Premier League Player of the Season award.

His contribution was certainly worthy of the honour, as the England international scored 19 goals and provided eight assists in 35 appearances.

This is the exact type of player that Ratcliffe desperately wants to sign for the Red Devils, one that can help transform the club, and Olise could just be that exact individual.

Olise and Foden boasted very similar numbers in the league this season, with the Eagle even registering better statistics in a host of important areas. That’s rather remarkable considering the former doesn’t play for the best team in the world.

FBref classify the duo as similar players, which is mainly due to their ability to score and create, which makes them both elite talents, and of course, they have technical class in abundance.

There’s also the similarity that they both possess magical left feet, yet also boast the ability to use their weaker side to great effect, making them far more unpredictable to defend against.

However, what the previous statistics don’t display is that the “magic” Olise, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored ten goals and assisted six in just 14 starts, which is just two contributions behind Bruno Fernandes and four more than second-place Rasmus Hojlund.

Crystal Palace player Michael Olise

Therefore, it’s clear that if the 22-year-old were to join, he’d have an enormous impact on the squad, in a similar manner to United’s noisy neighbours’ ace Foden.
