After Juventus agreed a deal with Manchester United to take Sancho off their hands, now report that the England international would prefer a move to Chelsea. Serie A giants Juve quickly shunted Federico Chiesa out of the door to Liverpool to press ahead with their efforts to secure Sancho on an initial loan with an obligation to buy.

Any hope Sancho has of moving from Manchester to London depends on Chelsea's ability to negotiate a swap deal for Raheem Sterling. It is reported that any deal for the former Borussia Dortmund winger must include the 29-year-old heading the other way.

Sancho played a key role in helping Borussia Dortmund get to the Champions League final while on loan back in Germany last season. The 24-year-old made 21 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund.

With just a few days left in the transfer market, there is little time remaining for the Red Devils to iron out a complicated deal with the Blues. Sancho may have to settle for Juventus in the end, finally bringing his miserable chapter at Old Trafford to a close.

IPL Governing Council likely to meet on March 14 to discuss coronavirus pandemic

The fate of the IPL will be up for discussion with the tournament’s Governing Council set to meet on March 14. With the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) as a pandemic, there is growing concern over whether or not the IPL should go ahead as scheduled from March 29.Even if the tournament were to go ahead, the participation of overseas players is in doubt, with the Indian government suspending all visas – except diplomatic, official, employment and certain other kinds – until April 15. Foreign players and coaches visiting India for sports events such as the IPL are granted a B-Sports visa – it is not yet clear whether these also stand suspended. On Thursday, the eve of his team’s first ODI against New Zealand in Sydney, Australia captain Aaron Finch said he hadn’t heard any updates from the IPL on the coronavirus front. Finch is set to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020.”The franchises have been great in updating players pretty much daily on how that looks and will effect anything going forward,” Finch said. “We are just concentrating on tomorrow, I know it’s difficult when it’s a pandemic now. It’s going to be tough, no doubt they’ll be some restrictions in place for teams, fans and grounds.”New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, said it was important “to be cautious” about travel in the current situation.”[There’s been] a number of emails from medical staff at home and the upkeep of good hygiene and things,” he said. “It’s a concern all around the world at the moment, other countries are affected a lot more at the moment, [but] no one’s exempt, it seems. To be travelling the globe so suddenly you need to be very cautious.”Sporting events across the world have been affected by the spread of the coronavirus. On Wednesday, the NBA suspended its 2019-20 season after a Utah Jazz player tested positive. Serie A also stands suspended until April 3, following a directive from the Italian government; until then, its last few sets of matches had been played behind closed doors.”It would be weird to play in an empty stadium, no doubt,” Finch said, when asked about the prospect of playing behind closed doors. “You get so accustomed to the atmosphere of the fans who ride the momentum, especially at home with the Australian fans who support us so well. If it comes to that we’ll wait and see, I saw the NBA being suspended for the near future. It’s interesting to see, not ideal obviously. A lot of people effected which is unfortunate.”COVID-19 is a respiratory illness which is primarily spread through contact. On Wednesday, the BCCI made its first official statement on the pandemic, which has caused over 4,300 deaths, with more than 120,000 people affected across 118 countries so far. In a media statement the BCCI said the three-match ODI series between India and South Africa, which starts on Thursday in Dharamsala, would not be impacted, and issued a wide set of dos and don’ts to all the stakeholders including teams, players, state associations, airlines and team hotels.ALSO READ – Coronavirus newsfile: BCCI releases list of precautions for India to followThe BCCI said it was following the guidelines set in place by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on following personal hygiene and isolating in case of any symptoms of coronavirus, which have been widely circulated across all platforms. So far, the BCCI is yet to discuss the option of postponing the tournament or playing it behind closed doors, and has been waiting for the Indian government to provide directions.Incidentally, the Indian government has already issued an advisory asking people to “avoid” mass gatherings, which events such as the IPL fall under. “Experts across the World have advised to reduce mass gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus disease,” the advisory, which is on the health ministry’s website, says. “In view of above, it is advised that mass gatherings may be avoided or possibly be postponed till the disease spread is contained.”In case any such mass gatherings are organized, States may take necessary action guide the Organisers on precautions to be taken as per the risk communication material already sent so as to avoid any Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases and Influenz Illness (ILs) including Covid-19.”

MLS transfer & return to Europe after 2026 World Cup: Gio Reyna given career advice by former USMNT star after Borussia Dortmund & Nottingham Forest struggles

Gio Reyna has been told to consider a transfer to MLS before returning to Europe in 2026, with career advice offered by a former USMNT star.

Disappointing loan spell in England Bundesliga employers open to offersTold to consider move back homeGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The 21-year-old playmaker has endured a testing 2024, with a Premier League move made in January after being deemed surplus to requirements at Borussia Dortmund. He failed to make an impact with Nottingham Forest, before then forming part of a collective flop while on Copa America duty.

Dortmund are reportedly open to offers, with MLS legend and ex-USMNT midfielder Sacha Kljestan telling of why ambitious Atlanta United could be the perfect landing spot for Reyna: “We saw him not getting minutes at Dortmund, then going on loan to Nottingham Forest, didn't really get enough minutes there. This way he plays week in, week out for two years straight, shows how good he is in MLS and makes a transfer back to Europe at 23 years old, after the 2026 World Cup. I think it's a no-brainer. It's going to cost Atlanta United some money, but I think it would be really good for him personally. And we've seen what he's done with the national team. The kid has quality. Bring him back home. Let him be the centrepiece of Atlanta United for the next two years leading up to the World Cup. He needs playing time. He will get you assists. He will set up plays.”

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Kljestan has also suggested that Atlanta should be looking into a deal for a man that has spent time on the books at Manchester United and Barcelona. He added on pairing Reyna with an experienced Netherlands international: “Memphis Depay is a free striker right now. Atlanta United, go out and get Memphis Depay. That's a starting No. 9. He's 30 years old, available on a free transfer. You're not going to recoup any money in the transfer market on that, but he's guaranteed to get you goals. If you put those two together on Atlanta, and they can find their way back into the play-off picture, I don't think anybody in the East will want to see Atlanta United with those two in a play-off match-up because they're both game-winners.”

Spurs can ease Porro blow by handing "dominant" ace his first start

Tottenham Hotspur are back in Premier League action this afternoon and have a glorious opportunity to consolidate their spot in the top four with victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Aston Villa lost against Manchester United last time out but are only one point behind Spurs, and gaffer Ange Postecoglou will now need to engineer back-to-back victories for the first time in 2024.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates.

With five successive home wins, Tottenham are in a good position to continue the revival under Postecoglou, but the Old Gold are as disciplined as they come and would only be too happy to complete an unlikely league double.

Spurs team news vs Wolves

In a big double blow to Tottenham's preparations, star full-backs Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie are both expected to be sidelined against Wolves, with the former likely to be out for several weeks.

Captain Heung-min Son should start, however, after assisting Brennan Johnson's late winner off the bench last weekend.

Spurs boast a fitter squad than has been the case for the majority of Postecoglou's tenure but Porro's absence will come as a massive blow, though there is a star waiting in the wings for just this scenario…

Why Radu Dragusin must start vs Wolves

Radu Dragusin completed a £27m transfer to Tottenham from Serie A side Genoa in January to strengthen Tottenham's backline but so far he has been restricted to just three cameos thus far.

Replacing Porro will certainly not be easy; the Spaniard has supplied seven assists across 23 Premier League fixtures this season, also averaging 1.7 key passes, 2.9 tackles, 2.5 clearances and 5.7 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

Pedro Porro.

Dragusin might not appear as Porro's natural replacement, that tag lies with Emerson Royal, but he has played at right-back before and has been hailed for his "complete & dominant" style by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Moreover, he ranks among the top 18% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 10% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, as per FBref, so he clearly has the attacking acumen and marauding presence to fill in for Porro, all the while maintaining an aggressive defensive skill set.

Emerson Royal has only played at right-back three times this season and has been marooned on the bench for most of the campaign, save for moments of real urgency.

Radu Dragusin in action for Genoa.

Dragusin also averaged 3.3 ball recoveries, 0.4 key passes and 4.6 clearances per game in Serie A this season, winning 67% of his duels, so it would seem that he has the all-encompassing style that would allow him to play on the right side of the defence.

Ultimately, Porro has been incredible this term and replacing him is a daunting task for Postecoglou to consider, but Dragusin cost a pretty penny last month and now he must be unleashed from the outset.

The death of tiki-taka: Can Spain win Euro 2024 after ditching possession-heavy football?

La Roja set a historic milestone during their 3-0 victory over Croatia in Berlin as they showcased a notable change in style from previous tournaments

It's often said that modern football is increasingly homogeneous in a tactical sense. Yet, while it's true that the ease with which ideas can be shared has led to many teams' playing styles converging, there have been a few exceptions to the rule. In the international game, Spain had been one such case.

Following a lengthy spell in the footballing wilderness, La Roja rose to prominence in the mid-to-late 2000s, winning the Euros in 2008 and 2012, as well as the World Cup in 2010. Key to establishing this dominance was their possession-heavy style.

'Tiki-taka', as it would become known to the world – much to Pep Guardiola's chagrin – has its roots in Catalunya. You can trace it back to Johan Cruyff, but its most successful proponent was Guardiola. During the same period as Spain's incredible success, Pep's Barca were demolishing the club game, winning 14 of the 19 trophies available to them between 2008 and 2012.

And even after the silverware dried up more recently, following the retirement of their golden generation, La Roja have retained a fanatical devotion to possession-first football. That is, until very recently.

    Historical turning point

Spain's 3-0 victory over Croatia in their Euro 2024 opener represented a significant milestone in the nation's footballing history. Much of the focus after the game was on Lamine Yamal, who marked becoming the youngest-ever player in European Championship history by setting up Dani Carvajal for his side's third goal.

But this was not the only thing that made the game momentous. For the first time since the Euro 2008 final against Germany, Spain had less possession than their opponents, ending a remarkable run of 136 matches.

There had been hint that this might happen. Before the game, Rodri spoke about the need for Spain to find alternative ways to win when their passing barrage isn't working. "We will play with the style that brings us a victory," he said. "I am not a guardian of any philosophy. You need to adapt and change against any team."

Manager Luis de la Fuente struck a similarly anti-tiki-taka tone at full-time, saying: "Maybe in other times, having more of the ball guaranteed better results," he said. "Now, we are a team that can surprise opponents like we did today. We are satisfied; I think we did well. We used the ball with a lot of sense and were clinical in the final third. It shows that you don't have to have so much of the ball if you're a team like us, with pace."

    Long time coming?

The process of Spain turning their backs on possession has a lot to do with De la Fuente's surprise ascent to the national team job in 2022. Luis Enrique had led the side at that year's World Cup, but after flying through a group-stage campaign that began with a 7-0 victory over Costa Rica, his charges would crash out in the last 16 to Morocco on penalties. This game provided the perfect fuel for tiki-taka's detractors.

Despite enjoying an incredible 77 percent of the possession and completing over 1,000 passes in Al Rayyan, Spain only mustered one shot on target in the entire 120 minutes. Strangely, Luis Enrique remained fairly upbeat post-match, concluding: "We could've created more and been more efficient, but I was happy with my team. They represent me and represent my style and I can only praise them."

His response spoke to his fervent belief in the Spanish possession style, but viewing things objectively, it's difficult to see how he could have possibly been satisfied. For large spells, Spain were keeping possession for possession's sake, with their lack of penetration resulting in a hugely underwhelming, early exit from the competition.

    Struggling for a new identity

De la Fuente's path from the disappointment of the 2022 World Cup to that emphatic Croatia victory has not been entirely smooth. During the early stages of his reign, he seemingly struggled to nail down an identity, using close to 50 players in his opening 10 matches. His second game in charge was also a damaging defeat to Scotland at Hampden Park, a result for which he received significant criticism.

There's been off-field problems too. In the wake of the Luis Rubiales scandal after the Women's World Cup final, he was seen applauding the disgraced RFEF president following his infamous "social assassination" speech. He did swiftly apologise, though there was pressure for him to stand down.

De la Fuente eventually weathered those storms and as his time at the helm has progressed, he's settled on a core group of players and a pragmatic style. It's not been as easy on the eye as previous iterations of the Spanish national team, but the public have been able to stomach this for several reasons.

Firstly, there is an acceptance that this is a team in transition. Tiki-tika's on-field driving forces, the likes of Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, have all stepped away from international action now, and there is a willingness to give a younger, less experienced generation time to find their feet. Yamal, Pedri and Gavi have all been given prominent roles under De la Fuente.

Secondly, it's been hard to argue with the results. Since that Scotland defeat, Spain failed to win just two of the 12 games leading into Euro 2024, a run which included an edgy, but ultimately satisfying UEFA Nations League triumph.

    New stars are here

Spain's shift away from possession has also been accelerated by the emergence of fresh talent and the need to alter the team's approach to maximise their impact. The best example is Yamal. The ridiculously talented teenager is one of the best one-on-one dribblers around. To make the most of his directness, he needs to play in a system where he has the freedom to break rank and attempt to beat his opposite number.

The same applies to Nico Williams, who enjoyed a scintillating club campaign with Athletic Club last season, and played on the opposite flank against Croatia. In Spain teams of years gone by, those out wide, the likes of Pedro, Iniesta and David Silva in 2010, for example, were constantly drifting centrally to help circulate possession. Now, things are a lot more direct, with Spain's starting wingers attempting eight dribbles between them against Croatia.

The new-look front three is complemented by Alvaro Morata. There's not a whiff of false nine about the former Chelsea man. He stretches the defence, occupies defenders and wants to get into the box, as evidenced by the nine crosses Spain swung in against Croatia – one of which led to Carvajal's goal.

Morata's strike on Saturday, which made him the third-highest scorer in Euros history behind Michel Platini and Cristiano Ronaldo, was also proof that this more direct approach can work for Spain. He was set free by a pass from Fabian Ruiz that came from Spain's own half. During their golden era, it's likely the ball would have been circulated around the team twice before it finally ended up at Morata's feet.

USMNT player ratings vs Brazil: Christian Pulisic and Matt Turner lift U.S. to statement draw ahead of Copa America

After a battering at hands of Colombia, Christian Pulisic and the USMNT bounced back by going toe-to-toe with the Selecao.

In 11 days, there will be no room for moral victories for the U.S. men's national team. Once the Copa America kicks off, results are king – no matter how you get them.

No matter what it takes, the only thing that will matter is actual, tangible success.

But on Wednesday night, in their final pre-Copa friendly, the U.S. earned a result that will allow them to leave Orlando with their heads held high. They didn't beat mighty Brazil, but they didn't back down and, in that context, it felt like a job well done.

After conceding an early goal to Rodrygo, Christian Pulisic's stunning free-kick helped the USMNT earn a 1-1 draw in Orlando. The score doesn't tell the whole story, though. The U.S. didn't sit and bunker; they showed no fear staring down an elite Brazil team.

After the recent 5-1 humbling at the hands of Colombia, this was exactly the performance the USMNT needed. A win would have been nice but, even without it, it feels like the U.S. is back on track after going toe-to-toe with one of the competition's favorites.

"We want to be able to beat teams like this, but we do think it's a positive step," Berhalter said. "Our record against Brazil hasn't been great and to have the guys put all the results away and just focus on working together, playing hard and doing their role was refreshing because that's what we're going to need to be successful moving forward."

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Matt Turner (7/10):

Needed to do better on the ball for Brazil's opener. Made a whole bunch of saves when called upon, though, which is the trade-off with a goalkeeper like Turner.

    Antonee Robinson (7/10):

Got up and down that left-hand side, as he always does. Was extra helpful with that given Brazil's wingers refusing to track back.

    Tim Ream (6/10):

Great on the ball, but looked a bit slow off of it. That can be expected when you play a team like Brazil, though.

    Chris Richards (6/10):

Had one fantastic tackle that was correctly rewarded by VAR. Was solid otherwise as well.

    Joe Scally (7/10):

Brazil targeted him all game long and he stood strong every time. One heck of a defensive performance that will help make his case at right-back.

    Midfield

    Yunus Musah (5/10):

Fell asleep on Brazil's opener. Did well going forward, but needs to be more aware defensively if he wants to be a No.6 at this level.

    Weston McKennie (5/10):

Wasn't as aggressive as we're used to, particularly on Brazil's goal. Didn't get on the ball as much as the USMNT would like either.

    Gio Reyna (7/10):

Surprisingly did a lot of good defensive work, in addition to his attacking contributions. Didn't quite create "the" chance, but had a few decent moments.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Christian Pulisic (8/10):

What a goal. Pulisic drew the free kick and then smashed it in himself to headline another big performance against a big team. Could have had a second, too, if not for a big save by Alisson.

    Ricardo Pepi (5/10):

Just didn't quite do enough. Never really got much of a chance, which won't help as he pushes for a starting spot.

    Tim Weah (7/10):

Did what he always does: go vertical. Weah simply makes opponents uncomfortable, which he did plenty against this ridiculously good Brazil team.

    Subs & Manager

    Folarin Balogun (6/10):

Got loose one time, but couldn't quite create enough space to prevent his shot from being blocked.

    Johnny Cardoso (7/10):

Was an emotional game for the Brazilian-raised midfielder. Made his presence felt in midfield both on and off the ball.

    Brenden Aaronson (6/10):

Forced a big save out of Alisson. Struggled with the physicality of Brazil a bit, but was decent enough.

    Tyler Adams (6/10):

Important minutes for Adams, who continues to build towards full fitness as the Copa looms.

    Shaq Moore (N/A):

Played just a few minutes with the U.S. looking to lock up the win.

    Gregg Berhalter (8/10):

A hugely important game for Berhalter. Got the tactics right and clearly had the team ready to play without fear. On another day, the U.S. leaves this game as winners, and Berhalter deserves his credit for that.
