Nottingham Forest eye free agent with best in the world defensive metrics

Nottingham Forest could be about to sign a free agent who ranked in the top 20% in all seven of the major defensive metrics last season – the only player in world football to do so.

The Reds continued their impressive start to the new Premier League season by pulling off a shock 1-0 win against Liverpool at Anfield this past weekend, a result that continues their unbeaten run.

Nottingham Forest star now set to miss next 11 games after injury update

He’ll be a big miss for Forest…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 16, 2024 Man City interested in Morgan Gibbs-White

Forest’s start to the season is bound to gather attention, as they are unbeaten in their opening four games of the league season and their players are performing at a very high level. One player who is really impressing and has been for some time now is Morgan Gibbs-White, as he’s continued his fine form from last season into the new campaign. The 24-year-old has scored one goal in four league games, and he has been rewarded with a call-up to the England squad earlier this month, making his debut in the break.

But unfortunately for Nottingham Forest, this may be costly, as it is now being reported that Manchester City are keeping a close eye on Gibbs-White. The report states that the Blues have been compiling a detailed dossier on the midfielder after his impressive performances, and the club’s scouting network are said to be huge admirers.

But while City have their eye on Gibbs-White, the Reds are planning to do some transfer business of their own as they weigh up a move for a free agent.

Free agent defender may join Nottingham Forest

According to HITC, Nottingham Forest are among the teams interested in signing free agent Oumar Solet. The 24-year-old was in the final year of his contract at Red Bull Salzburg, but the Austrian side decided to part ways with the player on Saturday and terminate his contract.

Solet had been with Salzburg since 2020 and was an important figure in the club’s recent success, winning three league titles in four seasons, and he now finds himself without a club but not short of interest. The defender is being eyed by Forest, Aston Villa, Wolves, and West Ham, while there are also teams from around Europe such as Marseille and AC Milan looking at the player.

The 24-year-old was ranked in the top 20% in the top seven major defensive metrics last season; he stood in the 98th percentile for passes completed, 97th for progressive passes, 96th for progressive runs, 89th for aerial win rate and 88th for defensive duel win rate. Furthermore, he was ranked 83rd percentile for defensive actions and 82nd for forward passe rate.

Given those numbers, he may not have to wait long to find his next side. Forest already have Murillo, Morato and Nikola Milenkovic as their first choice trio, but it appears as though Nuno Espírito Santo may want to add one more depth piece in that area of the pitch as they try to continue their solid start to the season.

Meg Lanning returns to top five in ODI batters' rankings

Leigh Kasperek’s career-best returns of 6 for 46, followed by 3 for 24, in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia has pushed her seven spots up to No. 17 among bowlers in the ICC rankings in the 50-over format, even as Meg Lanning’s contributions with the bat in Australia’s 3-0 wipeout of New Zealand in that series helped her move back into the top five among batters.Lanning scored a useful 51-ball 49 in the second ODI against New Zealand, in what was a 71-run win, and then hit 15 in the rain-curtailed third match, which also went Australia’s way, by 21 runs. That helped them stretch their winning streak to 24 matches – when they won the first match of the series to make it 22 wins in a row, Lanning’s team created a new world record by beating the mark of 21 set by Ricky Ponting’s Australia in 2003. Lanning had last been No. 1 in ODIs last October.Related

England batter Tammy Beaumont remained in top spot, followed by South Africa’s Lizelle Lee, Australia’s Alyssa Healy, and West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor. Healy hit 44 and 46 in the second and third ODIs, to follow a 65 in the first, to move to 756 rating points, just two behind Lee and nine behind Beaumont. Somewhat below them, Beth Mooney’s 26 and 28 took her up two spots to No. 17.In the bowlers’ chart, Australia quick Megan Schutt remained in second place, behind compatriot Jess Jonassen, despite picking up seven wickets in the series – she was named the Player of the Series, though – while the big mover was Kasperek, the 29-year-old offspinner, who moved to within two spots of her career-best 15th position. Georgia Wareham, meanwhile, moved up two places to 22nd after returns of 2 for 39 and 2 for 25.Australia also earned two points to consolidate their position at the top of the team table, where New Zealand are fifth, with South Africa, England and India between them.

Celtic could perfectly replace Oh by signing £8.5m star

Celtic enjoyed a relatively decent season last time out as Brendan Rodgers lifted two domestic trophies in his first year back in the dugout at Parkhead.

The Northern Irish boss came in to replace Ange Postecoglou, who departed for Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League, last summer and won the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup.

However, the Hoops were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, finishing bottom of their group, and they could be set to aim for more success in Europe to go alongside domestic success next term.

Changes to the squad could help the Scottish giants to push on in the continent and the forward department has already seen some alterations this summer.

Adam Idah spent the second half of last season on loan from Norwich City and the Hoops are reportedly continuing talks to sign him on a permanent deal, having already had an offer of £4m plus add-ons turned down.

The Scottish Premiership champions have also allowed one of their senior strikers from last season to move on this month as Hyeon-gyu Oh was sold to Genk.

Celtic's Hyeon-gyu Oh masterclass

The Belgian outfit have reportedly paid a fee of £4.5m to sign the South Korea international to bolster their forward line ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

That is £2m more than the £2.5m the Bhoys reportedly paid Suwon Bluewings to bring him to Glasgow in the January transfer window at the start of last year.

Celtic, therefore, played a masterclass with the 23-year-old attacker as they almost doubled their money on him, despite his distinct lack of quality on the pitch during his 18-month spell at Paradise.

Firstly, his finishing during the 2023/24 Premiership campaign left a bit to be desired as he plundered five goals from 6.35 xG, an underperformance of 1.35.

As you can see in the table above, only four Celtic players underperformed their expected tally by more than the South Korean dud, who was behind Kyogo Furuhashi and Idah in the pecking order in his final few months at the club.

The biggest issue for Oh was that he did not offer much outside of scoring goals and that meant that his wasteful finishing made him a liability for the side.

In the Premiership last season, the right-footed marksman failed to create a single 'big chance', did not register any assists, and only made 0.3 key passes per game across 20 appearances, which shows that he offered very little, if anything at all, as a creative threat.

Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh.

Oh also lost 58% of his ground duels and 60% of his battles in the air in those 20 league outings, which shows that opposition defenders got the better of him in physical contests more often than not.

Taking these statistics into account, Celtic played a blinder to make a £2m profit on him as his performances on the pitch did not suggest that he was worth more than they paid for him, as the forward struggled physically and technically.

Rodgers could, now, perfectly replace the £4.5m sale by dipping into the market to sign one of the club's reported targets before the end of the summer transfer window.

Celtic's interest in Danish sensation

The Scottish giants reportedly have a long-standing interest in Brondby centre-forward Mathias Kvistgaarden, and they already know how much he would cost.

Back in June, Austrian outlet VICTAURI, as relayed by the Daily Record, claimed that the Hoops target had a price tag of €10m (£8.4m) this summer.

The report stated that RB Salzburg are also eyeing up a possible move for the Danish sensation and that they had already sent scouts to watch him in action.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

However, the Bundesliga side were not willing to pay the £8.5m transfer fee required for him at the time, which meant that they did not press ahead with a deal for his services.

This means that the door could still be open for the Hoops to swoop in to bring him to Parkhead as the dream replacement for Oh in Glasgow next season.

Why Mathias Kvistgaarden would perfectly replace Oh

Being a back-up striker option, at least initially, is a hard sell for players and a difficult position for Celtic to fill, particularly if they also sign Idah from Norwich to join Kyogo in the striker ranks at Parkhead.

However, it could be sold to Kvistgaarden as an opportunity for him to prove himself and potentially earn a move to a major league in Europe, whilst winning trophies and playing European football.

At the age of 22, he is younger than Oh and seven years younger than Kyogo, which means that the talented gem could come in as the long-term heir to the Japan international.

This suggests that Kvistgaarden would be perfect for the role that the South Korean dud vacated as a young back-up striker with the potential to emerge as a key figure for Rodgers in the future.

His statistics for Brondby in the Danish Superliga also suggest that he could come in as a big upgrade on Oh, in terms of what he offers on and off the ball, as he enjoyed what talent scout Jacek Kulig described as a "superb season".

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old sensation offered more to his team as both a scorer and a creator of goals, whilst also winning a higher percentage of his duels.

This suggests that Kvistgaarden, who racked up 31 goals and 11 assists in 45 games for Brondby's U19s, could provide a greater threat at the top end of the pitch for Celtic, in comparison to Oh.

Therefore, the Danish marksman could perfectly replace the new Genk signing due to his age profile, potential, and quality that he could immediately bring to the team.

ECB seeking to 'protect reputation' amid racism claims, says former umpire John Holder

John Holder has claimed the ECB are “more interested in protecting their reputation than dealing with the issues” after it emerged they had hired an expert in reputational damage to counter allegations of institutional racism.Holder, the former international umpire, has announced that he and fellow former umpire Ismail Dawood are attempting to sue to ECB for racial discrimination. They have also called for an independent inquiry into the lack of non-white match officials in English cricket. Now it has emerged that the ECB are utilising the skills of Julian Pike, a high-profile lawyer from the London firm Farrer & Co, to advise them on the case. Pike is renowned as an expert in reputation management who, according to the Farrer & Co website, advises organisations which “could be at risk of reputational harm”. He previously defended News International against claims of phone hacking. But while Farrer & Co may have a lofty reputation – members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II, are among their clients – their usage has left Holder and Dawood underwhelmed. Instead they feel it suggests the ECB are more focused on protecting their image rather than demonstrating a commitment to greater equality and diversity in future.”I think the ECB should face the issues and ensure lessons are learned,” Holder told ESPNcricinfo. “Instead, it seems they are more interested in protecting their reputation than dealing with those issues.”Dawood would appear to agree.”Are the ECB focused on ensuring there is more equality and diversity in the game?” he asked ESPNcricinfo rhetorically. “Or are they focused on brushing their issues under the carpet in the hope of ensuring their broadcasters and sponsors don’t realise the severity of the problem?”We think they should be looking to employ more people from Black and Asian backgrounds. Instead, they’ve spent a lot of money employing a lawyer who deals in reputational damage. That is, I think, telling.”Pike also made the news when he was cleared of wrongdoing by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal in a high-profile incident that was concluded in 2017.While he admitted to instructing a private investigator to carry out surveillance of two lawyers acting against News International in the phone-hacking scandal, the tribunal found he had not acted without justification or without placing limits on the scope of any investigations. He was, however, ordered to £20,000 in costs after the tribunal concluded it was “repugnant” that solicitors should carry out surveillance on other lawyers.Related

The ECB point out that Pike is also an expert in sports governance, safeguarding and integrity, with a long history of working with national governing bodies. They also insist he has been utilised, in this context, in an attempt to arrange mediation with Dawood and Holder in an attempt to fully understand their grievances and find solutions.Attempts to arrange mediation have so far proved unsuccessful. Holder and Dawood’s representatives rejected a suggestion that Raj Parker, the recommendation of the independent organisation Sports Resolutions, lead the mediation on the basis that he had previously worked at the same firm of solicitors as the ECB’s deputy chair, Barry O’Brien. The ECB, meanwhile, have rejected Holder and Dawood’s suggestion that Lord Peter Hain lead the mediation process, on the grounds that he was “not qualified” as a mediator. Hain has previously held roles including Secretary Of State for Work and Pensions, and Secretary Of State for Northern Ireland. In the latter role, he played a key role in negotiating a historic power-sharing agreement.Since ESPNcricinfo revealed details of the lack of inclusivity in umpiring in England and Wales, the ECB have announced several measures aimed at improving diversity, including a commitment to ensure that a minimum of 15 percent of umpires on the national panel (the panel operating at county second XI and National County level) are from a Black and minority ethnic (BAME) background by the end of 2021. At present the figure is 8 percent. In addition, the ECB are to establish a mentoring programme to encourage umpires from a BAME background, and will ensure BAME representation on all umpire selection panels. They have also formed a Commission for Equality, designed to assess evidence of inequality and discrimination; a Forum for Race, designed to allow a confidential mechanism for people to report their experiences of exclusion in the game, and an Equality Code of Conduct, which is designed to focus minds on the issue, standardise expectations across the game and enable the speedy sanctioning of discriminatory behaviour. It is to be introduced ahead of the 2021 season. However, the board was beset with allegations of racial discrimination throughout much of 2020. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, a succession of former players detailed their experiences of exclusion within the game, with Holder and Dawood joining Azeem Rafiq in launching legal action.Holder, at least, is unimpressed by the ECB’s talk of inclusivity. “I’ve heard all this before,” he says. “The ECB have made grand statements like this for years. I remember Tim Lamb [the former ECB chief executive] promising racial equality in cricket in 1999.”But it’s proven to be nothing but talk. Nothing changed. If anything, things have got worse. To be blunt, I just don’t trust them anymore.”An ECB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo: “The actions we have outlined over recent months demonstrate our continued commitment to ensuring cricket is an inclusive and diverse sport. We take very seriously the allegations that have been raised by John Holder and Ismail Dawood and over the past months have been trying to meet with them both in order that we can listen to their experiences, so as to better inform our future approach to recruiting and developing umpires and match officials. We will continue in our attempts to do so.”

Man City make first move to sign "brilliant" £70m star ahead of Liverpool

As Pep Guardiola looks to complete the near-impossible task of improving a side who have just won a fourth consecutive Premier League title, Manchester City have reportedly registered their interest in one particular Liverpool target.

Man City transfer news

Man City's main concern so far this summer has been the future of star players, with both Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson linked to the Saudi Pro League. After winning the treble in the 2022/23 campaign and following that up with a fourth Premier League title in a row, it could be argued that certain players believe their work in England is done, especially as City wait to find out the verdict on their 115 FFP charges.

That said, even as major consequences potentially await, the Citizens have been linked with several stars this summer, including the likes of Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala. The latter would be a particularly impressive addition if De Bruyne does choose to leave for Saudi Arabia in the coming months. The Bayern Munich star enjoyed an excellent Euro 2024 and may yet make his mark at the Etihad alongside another reported target.

According to Football Insider in a report since relayed by Chronicle Live, Manchester City have registered their interest in Anthony Gordon as they join the race to sign the Newcastle United winger this summer.

Valued at a reported £70m by the Magpies, City join Liverpool in the battle for the Englishman, who seemingly had his head turned by the Reds before they were unable to reach an agreement with those at St James' Park.

Man City want to beat Man Utd to signing of "incredible" 16 y/o this summer

He is shining at academy level for club and country.

ByHenry Jackson Jul 6, 2024

Of course, now that Newcastle have passed the PSR deadline unscathed, they're in a far healthier negotiating position. When the Premier League champions come calling, however, they usually get what they want – and things could be no different when it comes to Gordon.

"Brilliant" Gordon could thrive under Guardiola

Whether it's been Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane or, more recently, Jeremy Doku, wide players tend to leave their mark under Guardiola, and Gordon would be no different. He finally burst into life at Newcastle last season to earn such interest, which could leave him with quite the decision to make this summer. Whilst his reported £70m price tag isn't exactly cheap, money is rarely an obstacle for those at the Etihad.

Anthony Gordon.

Even before Gordon stepped up to become the player who scored 12 goals and assisted a further 11 in all competitions last season, Eddie Howe seemed to be well aware of the player that Newcastle had on their hands, praising his mentality.

The former Bournemouth boss said via Chronicle Live in April 2023: "He's in a much better place now. He used the international break to get his ankle right. He came back ahead of schedule so really pleased with that. He's got a brilliant mentality and I think he's a top player in the making."

A player who looks destined for the top, Gordon could be left with the biggest decision of his career so far this summer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Now, the Football Association (FA) has unveiled plans to honour Houghton with a retirement ceremony, ahead of the Lionesses' friendly match against Germany at Wembley on October 25.

  • WHAT HOUGHTON SAID

"It was the greatest honour and privilege of my football career to have represented England, and then to go on to captain my country for eight years," Houghton said, upon the announcement of the news. “My time with England coincided with huge changes in women’s football, as we went through the period of amateur to professional. As I have said before, I hope that I left the game in a better place than when I came into it and that I contributed in some small way to giving the next generation of players a better future. I was fortunate to have played with amazing players and absolute legends of the game. I learned from managers, coaches and support staff at every camp and tournament. I will forever look back on some amazing memories and it will be special to go back to Wembley and say goodbye to the superb England fans”.

Kay Cossington, the FA’s women’s technical director, added: “I am delighted we can all come together with the fans at Wembley Stadium on a very special night and pay tribute to Steph’s remarkable England career. Steph’s impact and leadership has played a pivotal role in the Lionesses’ journey. We are all indebted to her contribution and this is our way to say thank you for everything she has done, not just for England, but for the whole of the women’s game. I hope Steph remains involved in the sport, using her expert knowledge and passion to continue to drive progress and help preserve the unique identity and values of women’s football. There’s no doubt she is, and will always be remembered as, a Lionesses legend.”
