Chelsea looking at £43m Veiga replacement who could become their own Saka

The latest story on the Chelsea bulletin is Borussia Dortmund’s efforts toward signing 21-year-old defender Renato Veiga, who joined in the summer but could be turned over for a big profit, price tagged at roughly £25m.

While Enzo Maresca’s team are looking to offload several players this year, such is the nature of Stamford Bridge’s bloated squad, there’s every chance that action could be taken heading down the other side of the transfer motorway, with a left-sided defender being targetted to potentially replace Veiga.

Chelsea eyeing Renato Veiga replacement

While Marc Cucurella has the left-back position on lock in the Premier League, it would be important for the Blues to sign a replacement for Veiga, especially as Ben Chilwell is headed for the exit this month too.

As such, there might be something in the rumour that Chelsea are interested in signing Patrick Dorgu, with Caught Offside revealing that the west Londoners could pounce given that long-time admirers Manchester United have still yet to make their move.

The €50m (£43m)-rated full-back is athletic and powerful and would act as the perfect foil to a less energetic player like Cucurella. However, the signs suggest that Dorgu won’t let himself be pigeonholed into any one positional category.

What Patrick Dorgu would bring to Chelsea

Dorgu, who plays for Serie A club Lecce, might only be at the start of his career but he’s already created a reputation as one of Italian football’s most promising talents, having been hailed for his “explosive” qualities by analyst Ben Mattinson.

With 55 professional appearances for Lecce to his name, the Danish talent is headed for the top and could be an instant success at Chelsea as Cucurella’s understudy, having scored three top-flight goals from 19 matches this season while incredibly winning an average of seven duels per game, as per Sofascore.

This is a perfect indicator of the talent that Chelsea would be getting their hands on, and given that the left-footer’s offensive qualities have been recognised to the degree that he has started playing in a more offensive role on the right flank, he may prove to be the club’s answer to Bukayo Saka.

Saka is one of the best forwards in Europe, with the Arsenal winger having scored nine goals and supplied 13 more assists for the title-chasing Gunners this season. Pundit Theo Walcott remarked that “the level he’s getting to is frightening” one month ago.

Of course, Mikel Arteta used to field him as a left-back, often filling in during the 2019/20 campaign as he sought to break into the first team and keep his place. The 23-year-old Saka has featured 22 times in the position across his already distinguished career, racking up five assists.

Like Dorgu, Saka is a player who embodies the myriad facets of the game. Oh sure, his silky passing and fierce ball-striking ability allow him to wake up with his name spelt across the headlines, but with a Premier League average of 4.9 successful duels and 1.4 tackles per game this season (Sofascore), you can see why he’s held in such high regard.

Such underlying data has served Dorgu well in the maiden stage of his career. Truly, he could follow in the England superstar’s footsteps at Chelsea, covering for Cucurella but perhaps with one eye on a future further up the field.

Denmark Under-21s coach Steffen Højer has praised the youngster’s “special” qualities, and now he might be the perfect man to improve the Chelsea project.

Celtic make left-winger priority signing after Rodgers talks with Desmond

Celtic have reportedly got a plan in place regarding a specific attacking signing in the January transfer window, according to a new claim.

Latest Celtic news

The Hoops continue to be linked with new signings, especially with the winter window now just a week away from opening, and a reunion with former hero Kieran Tierney has been mooted in recent days, in what would be a high-profile piece of business.

The left-back has found playing time hard to come by in an Arsenal shirt, with Mikel Arteta seemingly not rating him too highly, and he was shipped out to Real Sociedad on loan last season. A return to Parkhead could go down well, with the Scot a popular figure during his first spell at the club, winning five Scottish Premiership titles.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha has also emerged as a potential addition for Celtic in the near future, with the Royal Antwerp attacking ace seen as a possible successor to former player Jota, who left back in 2023 to seal a switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

In terms of outgoing transfers that could happen in January, left-back Alexandre Bernabei has been backed to seal a permanent move away from Parkhead, which would mean Tierney returning to the club would make even more sense.

Celtic eyeing specific attacking signing in January

According to a fresh update from The Daily Mail’s Stephen McGowan, Celtic are targeting a left winger in the January transfer window, as they look to improve Rodgers’ attacking options further.

The report says that the Hoops manager “held a transfer planning summit with major shareholder Dermot Desmond and chief executive Michael Nicholson in Dublin last week”, with “new arrivals in January” at the forefront of their conversation and a left-sided attacker a “priority”.

It is also stated that regardless of whether Greg Taylor “commits to a new deal”, Rodgers also likes the idea of sealing a Tierney return.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

Bringing in additional firepower can never be a bad thing for Celtic and left wing does look like a more pressing area of the pitch to improve in when it comes to depth and quality.

Nicolas Kuhn has nailed down the right-sided berth, while the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah are great options to lead the line, but there arguably isn’t quite the same level of competition on the left.

Daizen Maeda has only scored twice in 15 appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season, so bringing in someone with a little more end product makes sense, not least in terms of trying to ensure the Japanese is forced to find a higher level on a consistent basis.

Maeda is clearly still a big player for Celtic, but his final ball or finish can let him down at times, so it would be nice to see a more polished winger come in there, in the mould of the excellent Kuhn, for example.

Postecoglou will be looking to put that performance behind them against a Roma side who are seriously under-performing in their Serie A campaign, winning just three league games all season so far, with Claudio Ranieri’s side languishing just three points above the relegation zone.

Timo Werner, who’s been a real point of discussion among Spurs supporters this season, missed their clash with Galatasaray due to a hip injury – but the German has since returned to action and even provided an assist against City.

The forward, who pockets £200,000-per-week when bonuses are triggered, has been criticised throughout 2024/2025 for his wasteful finishing in front of goal.

“He is definitely down in confidence you can see that,” said Postecoglou on Werner’s form after Spurs beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 in late October.

“It is a difficult thing to get out of sometimes. It can feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. All we can do is try to support him and keep trying to get him to a place where he feels a little bit more confident with certain things.

He scored his first goal since March in their 2-1 win over City in the Carabao Cup recently, and reports in the last few weeks have suggested that Werner is set to rejoin Leipzig at the end of his loan spell – with Tottenham electing not to trigger the £8.5 million buy option in his contract.

GMS reported that Werner was on track to leave Spurs after this campaign, but that same outlet has now suggested that Daniel Levy, Postecooglou and co are performing a U-turn.

Tottenham refuse to rule out permanent Timo Werner deal

According to their information, Tottenham are nw refusing to rule out a permanent deal for Werner, following Postecoglou’s own decision not to cut his loan spell short in January.

While they’re still in the market for wide forwards, with Andreas Skov Olsen among the names being monitored to provide competition for Werner, it is believed the former Chelsea forward could now stay beyond 24/25.

No final decision has been made just yet, as key figures are holding off on the call until later in the campaign, but it appears those within Tottenham are having a change of heart – as it looked far more likely that Werner was set to go back to the Bundesliga.

Jason Roy pulls out of IPL 2022, will take 'indefinite break' from cricket

England batter Jason Roy has pulled out of IPL 2022 citing the challenge of staying in the tournament bubble for an extended period. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Roy, who was signed by Gujarat Titans for his base price of INR 2 crore (USD 266,000) at the auction, informed the franchise of his decision last week. The Titans are yet to finalise a replacement.Roy, 31, recently had a good outing in PSL 2022, which was also played within a biosecure bubble, where, despite playing just six matches, he was among the top batters in the tournament as well as the leading run-getter for the Quetta Gladiators, who finished fifth in the six-team league. Roy scored 303 runs at an average of 50.50 and a strike rate of 170.22, scoring two fifties and a hundred – enough for him to finish second on the list of tournament MVPs on the basis of ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats.”With everything going on in the world over the last 3 years, it’s added up and taken a toll on me,” Roy said as part of a longer message on Instagram. “I feel it’s only right I spend some quality time with my family. As well as spending time working on myself and my game over the next couple of months leading in to a busy year.”

Surrey released a statement on Tuesday confirming that Roy would not play for them in the early stages of the County Championship season – which runs concurrently with the IPL – and said that he would instead take “a short indefinite break from the game to spend time with his family”.”There is currently no fixed date for Jason’s return to cricket but he will remain in contact with the club during this period, with staff keen to assist him where possible,” the statement said.Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, added: “Everyone at Surrey is here to support Jason and fully understands his decision to step away from the game for a period of time in order to be with his family. When he is ready to return to cricket, we will be here ready to help and prepare him for his upcoming challenges in the game.”This is the second time Roy has decided to not to play the IPL after finding a team at the auction. In 2020, Delhi Capitals picked up Roy for his then base price of INR 1.5 crore, but he opted out for personal reasons.Related

The IPL this time will be a 10-team event and will take place in Mumbai and Pune during the league phase. Teams will operate out of a bubble through the season, although the IPL is yet to share the guidelines and protocols with the franchises. If Roy were to be in the bubble throughout the IPL, he would probably need to be away from his family – which includes his second child who was born in January – for more than two months, with the tournament set to begin on March 26 and end with the final on May 29.Roy is not the first player to pull out of the IPL citing bubble fatigue during the Covid-19 pandemic, which has put severe restrictions on movement in the last two years. Several players have withdrawn from the IPL in the past, both before the start of seasons as well as during the tournament, citing a need to keep themselves fit, especially mentally, for marquee bilateral series and World Cups. As it happens, the T20 World Cup will be played in Australia in October-November 2022.Titans would have been the fourth franchise Roy would have played for in the IPL, having earlier represented Gujarat Lions (2017), Delhi Daredevils (2018) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2021). He went unsold at the 2021 auction but was drafted in as a replacement for the Australia allrounder Mitchell Marsh. Overall, Roy has scored 329 runs in 13 IPL matches at an average of 29.90 and a strike rate of 129.01, including two half-centuries, which came in his respective team debuts for the Daredevils and the Sunrisers.March 1, 2022, 1215 GMT – This story was updated to include Roy’s social media post and Surrey’s statement.

Sky Sports: Man Utd planning to sign striker and No 8 for Amorim in January

Manchester United are thought to be planning a double January transfer swoop for new head coach Ruben Amorim, according to Sky Sports.

Amorim beats Guardiola 4-1 in Champions League

The Red Devils and INEOS moved quickly to secure the services of Amorim after parting ways with Erik ten Hag, with the Sporting CP boss officially taking over on November 11.

Since being announced as the new man in charge at Old Trafford, Amorim still had two Sporting CP matches to prepare for, the first of which coming against Manchester City and new rival Pep Guardiola.

More important than Gyokeres: Man Utd want to sign £70m machine for Amorim

Manchester United are already on the hunt for reinforcements for boss Ruben Amorim.

Sporting CP brushed City aside in the Champions League, winning 4-1 in the new group stage format to go above Guardiola’s side in the process. Viktor Gyokeres, who has already been linked with a move to Old Trafford, scored a hat-trick for the hosts in what was Amorim’s final home game.

Talking after the game about whether it was a sign of things to come in Manchester, Amorim said: “I already said previously you cannot transport one reality into another. At Manchester United you cannot play exactly like this. You cannot play so defensively and so there we will have to adapt. Clearly it is really difficult to beat this team and to beat Pep Guardiola. And he is not a worse manager than me.

“It will be a completely different world, a different team, we won’t have that much time to train and we will begin from a different starting point. People can make their own judgements but I say to the people of Manchester that this was a one-off.”

Amorim will soon inherit a Man Utd squad who have struggled for goals in the Premier League this season – scoring just nine in 10 games – the third fewest in the division.

By the looks of things, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS want to add to their attacking ranks to rival Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, while also bolstering their midfield.

Man Utd plan double signing for Amorim in January

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man Utd are planning to make January signings for Amorim, with a ‘cheap striker’ and a new ‘number eight’ on the shortlist.

Plettenberg doesn’t mention any specific attacking targets but names Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretkza as a player of interest, although the £290,000-a-week German doesn’t have any plans to leave the Allianz Arena in the New Year.

It will be interesting to see who Amorim, INEOS, Dan Ashworth and co target in attack, as you’d expect a ‘cheap’ forward rules out Gyokeres, who has an £85m release clause.

He made his debut in Rawalpindi in 2019 after spending 12 years in domestic cricket for 7116 runs in 106 first-class games. He made his Test debut at the age of 31 and began with a century, and also became the only player in history to reach three figures on both Test and ODI debuts.Central Punjab are sitting in fourth place on the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy table at the moment and are out of the finals race, with Northern and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sitting in the top-two spots. They have drawn five games, won two and lost two so far this season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe compared to Elon Musk after brutal cost-cutting measures at Man Utd as football finance expert claims INEOS' actions have revealed true plans for their 'crown jewel asset'

Manchester United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been likened to Elon Musk due to INEOS' cost cutting after their sporting department takeover.

INEOS, a British multinational conglomerate led by Sir Ratcliffe, completed their minority takeover at Manchester United in December 2023 as they reached a deal with the Glazer Family to buy a 25 per cent share of the Red Devils and took control of football operations. The new ownership has since made a number of cuts to backroom staff at Carrington in order to reduce operational costs, which has been met by fierce criticism. Football finance expert Professor Rob Wilson has now likened Ratcliffe's work to billionaire Musk's takeover and cost-cutting at X (formerly Twitter).

AdvertisementWHAT WILSON SAID

Speaking to Spin Casino, Wilson said: “The big thing with Manchester United is that the organisation became bloated. Just because Sir Jim Ratcliffe has gone in, he's seen as the bad guy that's making the cuts. The reality is any sensible business owner would have done very similarly. They might have done it in a different way, might have done it over a longer period, might have gone deeper, but anybody that is smart and has made money in business will have cut costs at Manchester United because they needed to be cut.

“What we see generally, typified in US-style ownership, is they look at revenue generation first and they look at cost control second. So go back to Manchester United, what did the Glazers do? They've tried to ramp up revenue as much as they possibly could. Actually what they did was they put an army of people behind that to make sure that you could sign your big deals with Snapdragon or Team Viewer before that and the big deal with Adidas and the Nike deal that came before that.

“So I think what we typically see with US ownership in the first instance is let's go after revenue, particularly in sponsorships and then we look at the other things thereafter.

“Elon Musk is slightly different because his acquisitions that we've seen, particularly at Twitter or X, is that he goes in after the cost-cutting because his investment methodology is more akin to what we would see with a British investor who looks at costs first."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wilson also believes that INEOS have accepted that Manchester United are the 'crown jewel' in their portfolio and that could be the reason why they are divesting from other sports.

The football finance expert said: “I’m wondering if the sporting strategy has been to build a stable to improve awareness and legitimacy to go after a tier one asset, Manchester United. Now they have that, they divest from other properties to increase their profile in Manchester. This would be bad news for some of the other partners, cycling in particular, if true, and potentially good news for United as they look to recover on the field and finance a stadium regeneration project.

“It’s damaging in the short term if INEOS leaves other properties high and dry, but that’s the nature of business. They are also forced to consider where they spend given the challenges they’ve faced in the European trading markets. My theory is that it’s all linked to Manchester United in one way or another. They will also be reviewing the impact of the deals they have and maybe New Zealand simply didn’t deliver what they’d expected?

“Sport sponsorship is expensive and it’s clear that the United project is bigger than anyone expected. It’s a crown jewel asset though and single-handedly will provide benefits more significant than the sum total of the other sports properties if they turn the tide with United’s sporting performance. You don’t put your top team in there for nothing.”

Under INEOS and Ratcliffe, the performance of Manchester United on the field is yet to show any sort of upturn despite their massive investment in the summer transfer window and their recruitment of Ruben Amorim. However, they could spend again in the summer as they will look to bring in the Portuguese coach's preferred signings to try and set the team on the right path for next season.

Liverpool defeated Bournemouth 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, snapping Andoni Iraola's 12-match unbeaten streak across all competitions. U.S. international Tyler Adams started and logged 90 minutes during the contentious match, while Mohamed Salah scored twice to secure all three points for the league leaders.

had multiple opportunities to find the back of the net themselves, but some stupendous defending from Arne Slot's men helped them keep the clean sheet.

Adams fought well in the midfield, including a moment in the first half where he was the victim of a harsh tackle that saw his lip bloodied and he was briefly removed from the match as a result. It was his fifth-straight start across all competitions, after beginning the season with inconsistency due to injuries. Bournemouth, meanwhile, were missing eight first-team players to injury for the contest.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Adams completed 83 percent of his passes on Saturday, with 66 total touches on the ball. He completed two of three attempted dribbles, while completing four passes into the final-third as well from his central midfield position.

However, the American was 0 for 4 with long ball attempts and did not complete a single tackle against Liverpool in the midfield. More positively, Adams was one of Bournemouth's best players on the day in 1v1 battles, winning four of nine ground duels, and two of three aerial duels.

dominated the center of the park and the final third, overloading and Adams, making them chase the match from the opening whistle. As a result, Iraola's men and Adams struggled to get any possession whatsoever, with Liverpool furthering their lead upon the rest of the Premier League.

Vinicius' presence on the left wing means that World Cup winner Mbappe is operating as a central striker. It took him a while to adjust to the demands of that role after heading to Madrid, but is now up to 19 goals for the season – with 12 of those coming in the Spanish top-flight.
