Arsenal: If Gunners claim top-four, Watford win will be seen as the catalyst

It was a result Arsenal needed, and it was a result that can have a positive domino effect for the Gunners.

Last night’s 1-0 win away to Watford was a turning point for Arsenal’s season. It was the club’s first clean sheet on the road all season and was a victory not many fans expected to go into the match before kick-off, but the Gunners pulled it off, and in doing might have set up a chain of events for the team.

The weight and importance of winning away from home and getting a clean sheet has already been massive for Arsenal, injecting new confidence for the team as they head into their final few league games of the season with the belief that now they can genuinely achieve a top-four finish as well as find success in Europe.

Thursday’s game against Napoli will be another major test for Arsenal, but if Unai Emery can guide his side to a result over Carlo Ancelotti’s team in Italy, it will yet again add to the claim that the win over Watford has set in motion a chain of events leading to success for the Gunners.

Arsenal now have their destiny for this season in their hands, and with the win against Watford likely to motivate the team to go further this season, fans and players can look back at that win against their London rivals as the result that changed their fortunes for the better.

Arsenal fans, how important was the win against Watford? Let us know!

‘Absolutely class’ – Luton fans delighted with Stacey’s inclusion in League One Team of the Year

[ad_pod ]

Luton Town fans have expressed their genuine delight at the inclusion of Jack Stacey in League One’s Team of the Season.

The 22-year-old has made 38 appearances in the top-flight this season and has only been absent once, on the first day of the season, as the Hatters lost 1-0 to Portsmouth.

He has been ever-present since, laying on a total of six assists from right-back and scoring four goals.

With Stacey in the team, Luton have lost just three games and sit top of League One, five points clear of second-placed Barnsley.

And he has been in exceptional form in recent outings, scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Bradford and also netting in the 2-2 draw with Gillingham. Against Doncaster, Luton’s last fixture, Stacey laid on an assist in a 4-0 thumping.

Stacey moved to Luton from Reading in 2017 and appears to have finally found his niche, with the club seemingly set to win promotion to the Championship this season.

Luton left-back James Justin and striker James Collins, who has scored 20 goals in League One, have also been included in the Team of the Season.

Stacey expressed his delight at his inclusion on Tuesday, with a number of supporters quickly praising the full-back. Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

Summer business: Newcastle would be mad to miss out on signing Salomon Rondon

[ad_pod ]

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are ‘reluctant’ to spend more than £12m on Salomon Rondon in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Rondon joined Newcastle on loan from West Bromwich Albion last summer, with Dwight Gayle moving in the opposite direction.

The Venezuela international is enjoying a fine season for the Magpies, finding the back of the net on nine occasions in the Premier League.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are keen to land the striker on a permanent deal, but do not want to spend more than £12m.

Rondon has a £16.5m release clause in his current deal with West Brom, which will expire at the end of the 2019-2020 campaign.

It seems difficult to believe that the Premier League club will potentially miss out on the South American over a difference of £4.5m, but that could well occur.

Should Newcastle hold firm?

No, pay the £16.5m. The simple fact of the matter is that Newcastle will not be able to sign a player of Rondon’s quality this summer for that price.

It is not exactly as if the forward is entering the final stages of his career. Indeed, he will not turn 30 until September and arguably has another three or four seasons left at the top level.

Rondon’s nine Premier League goals this season have helped the team, but his overall work rate has been clear for everyone to see and will have been much appreciated by the supporters.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

It is not difficult to understand why Newcastle are reluctant to meet the buy-out figure due to the fact that the striker’s deal with West Brom will expire next summer.

However, to potentially miss out on a move for Rondon over a relatively small figure would be poor business when considering the player’s quality.

Southampton fans slam Gallagher performance vs Brighton

[ad_pod ]

Southampton moved a step closer to Premier League safety on Saturday, but fans have found something to be negative about anyway.

Southampton secured a huge away win at Brighton, taking all three points away from the Amex Stadium courtesy of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s second half strike.

The skipper collected a pass from Nathan Redmond before poking the ball home for the game’s only goal.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side though, as Martin Montoya came as close as you can get to an equaliser when he struck the crossbar.

And one big decision that Hasenhuttl made during the match is drawing plenty of attention, as the boss opted to introduce Sam Gallagher off the bench, leaving Charlie Austin to sit back and watch.

Gallagher replaced Danny Ings with about 20 minutes remaining, but the 23 year-old touched the ball just 11 times and looked completely off the pace.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, look away now Sam…

Arsenal: Defeat to Palace ranks as one of the most embarrassing results this season

Tottenham were unable to do the job over Manchester City, Everton dismantled Manchester United, all Arsenal had to do was win, and they bottled it.

Easter weekend will be looked back on as a frustrating few days for Arsenal fans. Not only did every one of their top-four rivals place drop points, but they themselves were unable to gain valuable ground in the race for a Champions League spot by losing at home to Crystal Palace, ending a 10 game winning run at home in the league.

If the Gunners are to miss out on top four entirely and fail to win the Europa League, this will be the game supporters look back on and think ‘imagine if we didn’t lose that game’.

The loss to Palace was a damming result after such a good seven days for the Gunners that saw Unai Emery’s side win 1-0 away from home against both Watford and Napoli, two games most Arsenal fans and neutrals would not have expected the Gunners to get anything out of, which is what makes this latest defeat more painful.

There are a lot of things you can blame for the defeat. Emery’s tactics and squad selection, players yet again not turning up when the club and fans needed them too and Palace simply wanting the three points more all played a role in what was one of the most embarrassing results for Arsenal this season.

And with Wolves next in the league, a team who have built a reputation for getting results over the top-six, Arsenal have put themselves in a potentially dangerous position if they want to return to the top-four.

Arsenal fans, can the Gunners still get a top-four finish? Let us know!

Fully deserved: Liverpool fans pay tribute to in-form Sadio Mane

[ad_pod ]

Sadio Mane was named Liverpool’s Player of the Month for March.

The 26-year-old scored five times in five appearances last month, including a brace against Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

In all, he has managed 20 goals in 39 appearances for the Reds this season.

Much of the focus was on Mohamed Salah last term, but Mane has been Liverpool’s go-to player for goals and performances over the last few weeks.

Next up for the Reds is a trip to Southampton on Friday night, where they will be looking for the win to take them back to the top of the Premier League table.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

And the Senegal international will be keen to continue his excellent form against his former club.

The Liverpool fans absolutely adore Mane for a number of reasons and a whole host of the supporters have been on social media lavishing praise on the attacker:

What a guy! Crystal Palace fans reminisce about Jason Puncheon

[ad_pod ]

Tuesday marked the third-anniversary of Jason Puncheon’s season-saving goal against Norwich in 2016 – the number 42 picked the ball up on the edge of the box and curled a left-footed strike beyond a helpless John Ruddy.

Puncheon’s strike was the only goal of the game, finally giving the Eagles their first win of 2016 – a result which would be the platform for the then-strugglers to fight to safety in the Premier League.

The midfielder may have been crucial on that day in saving his side from relegation but was unable to help Huddersfield – his current team – from being relegated by the Eagles at the end of March.

Many football fans dread the transfer window. The Pl>ymaker FC squad name who they’re worried about losing this summer in the video below…

Currently on loan with the Terriers, the former Palace captain may have played his last game in red and blue as his contract at Selhurst Park expires in the summer.

Below, Crystal Palace fans reminisce about the 32-year-old and his game-winning strike of 2016 on Twitter…

Fixture in Focus: How the key figures reacted to Liverpool vs Tottenham

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham managed to recover from a late Mo Salah goal to clinch a 2-2 draw at Anfield last season but they had no such luck on this occasion after the Egyptian’s header inadvertently found its way into the net via a combination of Hugo Lloris and Toby Alderweireld.

It was a gut-wrenching result for the visitors to accept and a priceless and potentially title-deciding one for the jubilant hosts.

In the aftermath of proceedings, there were plenty of intriguing reactions to dissect from both players and managers.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up a handful of some of the most thought-provoking and pertinent quotes from the weekend.

Moussa Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko was at the core of Tottenham’s attacking endeavours as the game progressed, with his intelligent one-twos and engine allowing him to cut through the core of Liverpool’s midfield.

In a turn of events which seemed tailor-made for Sissoko to complete his incredible transition into a Spurs hero, the all-action midfielder blazed over with a wild left-footed strike.

In the aftermath of the game, Sissoko took the fall for his teammates (via RMC Sport): “I blame myself for this defeat.”

Noble, selfless and humble, his words are refreshing and rare in the modern game. Some fans, of course, will be inclined to share his sentiments, while plenty of sympathisers will instead unleash the full force of their anger at Lloris.

Nobody actually expected you to score anyway, Moussa.

Hugo Lloris

Speaking of Lloris, there is an element of Déjà vu in the post-match comments from the Spurs stopper.

Just as his compatriot did, the Frenchman appeared to accept responsibility for the defeat after his mistake resulted in the dramatic winning goal (via Sky Sports).

“When you are a goalkeeper, you know the responsibility. It’s like this. Of course you question yourself

“The good thing is that you know there is another game in three days, so you need to switch off about today and prepare the next game. I think it’s the best way to forget.

“I tried to catch the ball twice but unfortunately there was no bounce, it bounced straight to the shin of Toby, and then what happened, happened. The luck was probably on the opponent’s side today.”

Another Spursy moment provided by Lloris on the big stage.

How many chances will he get before Pochettino’s patience runs empty?

Jurgen Klopp

Klopp is a manager who has been celebrated for his ‘heavy metal’ brand of ruthless counter-attacking football, but Liverpool’s title challenge has notably been built on their ability to win ugly when the roaring heavy metal approach has struggled to hit the right notes.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Klopp had something to say about how his side’s style has differed this season.

“It feels like we always have to apologise a little bit that because of the football last season and stuff like that, because people always want the 100 per cent package.

“We had to find a way to win football games much more often than in the past. So until now it kind of worked, we didn’t score less goals than last year, I think. I don’t have the numbers in my mind but for sure not a lot. It’s all good.”

As Klopp has alluded to, as long as the points keep flowing there’s no reason to criticise the aesthetics behind the results, especially at this stage in the season.

Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino was very much interested in underlining the fact that Tottenham’s Champions League hopes rest in their hands, while some special praise was reserved for a group of players who have been operating under unprecedented circumstances (via Sky Sports).

“Now we start a mini-league, with seven games ahead, in the top four it is in our hands. With all the circumstances happening this season, they are more than heroes, and we need to keep the trust and confidence, and of course we are going to fight to be in the Champions League.”

If Spurs manage to maintain their place in the top-four and overcome Manchester City in the semi-final of the Champions League, the season will have to be regarded as a resounding success.
