Goldbridge Unhappy As Man United "Waste Of Optimism" Player Returns

Mark Goldbridge has reacted to news that Anthony Martial is now back on the grass at Carrington following his latest injury setback at Manchester United.

What's the latest on Manchester United forward Anthony Martial?

According to The Evening Standard, Martial has been spotted in training pictures at Manchester United's Carrington training complex despite failing to feature in a single pre-season friendly for the Red Devils.

The report adds that the France international could feature in some capacity against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday at Old Trafford as new signing Rasmus Hojlund has been ruled out for a 'few weeks' with a back concern.

Last campaign, Martial struggled to maintain regular fitness for Manchester United, amassing 29 appearances across all competitions and notching nine goals and three assists in total, as per Transfermarkt.

Speculation surrounding the future of the former Sevilla loanee has emerged over the course of the transfer window. According to Caught Offside, Martial has been shortlisted by David Moyes at West Ham United, with the Scot looking to replace Gianluca Scamacca at the London Stadium between now and the close of play.

Writing in his exclusive column on Substack, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Manchester United could be willing to let Martial seek a new challenge, stating: "At the moment, Anthony Martial is staying at Manchester United but I’d consider him in the same range of players as Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire – if he gets an important proposal, he could leave. “Otherwise, he’ll stay and be part of Erik Ten Hag’s rotation squad. That’s the feeling around Martial now.”

Martial has just one year left on his contract at Manchester United and believed to earn a whopping £250,000 per week on the books of the Premier League giants, as per Capology.

Furthering the notion that Martial could be set to leave Manchester United, transfer insider Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT that any departure could be complex despite the Red Devils' willingness to ship the Frenchman out of the club due to his injury record.

Jones said: “This could have been a big summer for Martial but a lack of game time again means he can not be relied on. United are definitely open to the idea of Martial leaving but it has to be a situation that suits everybody and that’s the tricky part to this. Obviously Martial’s injury record is not ideal so even future clubs have to be wary of that and it will impact in terms of any future deals he could get."

What has Mark Goldbridge said about Anthony Martial?

Goldbridge has been reacting to news that Martial has returned to training at Carrington on The United Stand YouTube channel; however, he isn't convinced that the Massy-born forward will be able to stay consistently fit in 2023/24.

The pundit stated: "I cannot invest any hope, excitement or anticipation or belief in Anthony Martial. I can't, not because I don't like the player, because it's a waste of optimism. He would have to stay fit until New Year for me to start believing in Anthony Martial.

"If he is fit and he keeps playing games, great. I'm not going to start getting excited about it because I'm just going to expect every week that he's going to break down injured again. That's where I am with Martial. It can only be a bonus, but it's not a bonus I believe in, so lets wait and see."

For now, at least, it looks like Martial will need to convince not just Goldbridge, but the entire Manchester United support, that he can be relied upon as an available attacking option this term after years of false dawns at Old Trafford.

Rain suits Essex fine against determined Lancashire

Lancashire have been spirited against the Championship leaders but the weather looks set to frustrate their attempts to close the gap

A slow day, it will be labelled, but Essex will not care. A grey day, too, people may say but that will not trouble the leaders either. The forecast rain did not arrive until tea time but by then Essex had reduced their first-innings deficit to 175 and it is hard to see how Lancashire can win this game if they are not able to enforce the follow-on. The sight of the shower-soaked white tarpaulins billowing in the breeze as they sought to escape the groundstaff’s control will not have dismayed Varun Chopra’s team one jot. When play was abandoned they still led their nearest rivals by 36 points and a draw will suit them fine. These are the seemingly unremarkable days which nevertheless go a long way towards deciding titles. They are the recitatives between the arias of individual accomplishment or the choruses of team effort that make the County Championship so memorable Replying to Lancashire’s 290, the very warm favourites for the title scored 115 runs for the loss of four prime wickets, the last of them being that of Ravi Bopara who was caught at slip by Liam Livingstone off Stephen Parry on the stroke of tea. Before lunch, though, Lancastrian hopes had been raised by the fall of two early wickets: Nick Browne was bowled by Ryan McLaren for 6 when not playing a stroke and Dan Lawrence taken low down by Dane Vilas at slip off the same bowler for 12.But in the afternoon session Chopra and Bopara added a vital 57 runs in 25 overs during which the ball lost its hardness and batting became a rather more manageable task. The venom was drawn from the Lancashire attack, although not before Chopra was leg before for 40 when playing across a full-length ball from Tom Bailey. Late in the session the umpires decreed that only spinners could be used because the light was deteriorating. That compulsion brought Lancashire the wicket of Bopara but the clouds had been gathering from the west well before the second interval and there was little surprise that no more play was possible. The first hour of the day’s play had shown why Lancashire have acquitted themselves well in red-ball cricket this season albeit that the session had begun with an anti-climax. Having resolved to sell his wicket very dearly on what was effectively the first day of this game Haseeb Hameed found he did not have a price in the sixth over of the second morning when pinned by a back of a length ball from James Porter which kept low in the sixth over of the morning. He had added only three runs to his overnight 85 but he departed to a warm round of applause, some of it presumably coming from folk who had only seen him bat on this third morning.Still, though, Lancashire batting was not done. Tom Bailey seems to have copied Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s stance but not his caution and he made 34 not out in a last-wicket stand of 57 with Kyle Jarvis. The last man’s contribution to this fun was 26 and the home spectators’ entertainment was only ended when Jarvis lost his leg stump to Simon Harmer the ball after he had hit the offspinner for a straight six. That left Lancashire with two batting bonus points and their last three wickets had doubled their score. Porter finished with 5 for 73 and should have something more substantial to toast in a couple of weeks’ time.

Newcastle In Talks For "Excellent" £50m Whiz This Summer

Newcastle United are still interested in Southampton right-back Tino Livramento after seeing an initial advance rebuffed, and could re-enter formal negotiations in the coming days.

What's the latest on Tino Livramento to Newcastle?

That's according to i news, who claim that the Magpies remain in transfer talks for the 20-year-old Englishman after a £30m transfer offer was rejected by Saints earlier this month, with his team demanding £50m.

It is said that there is still a gulf in respective valuations of the player, with Eddie Howe's club likely needing to raise their offer to £40m to see the south coast side part with their precocious talent following relegation from the Premier League this year.

The report underscores Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth's emphasis on squad improvement this summer by landing two further incomings to consolidate the return to Champions League football, with the Toon finishing fourth in the English top-flight last term.

Is Tino Livramento a good player?

Kieran Trippier has proved a remarkable signing for Howe's Newcastle project since arriving from Atletico Madrid in a £12m deal in January 2022, earning praise as a "revelation" by talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan and recording a remarkable average Sofascore rating of 7.61 in the league last season.

However, the England international will be 33-years-old in two months' time and Howe is working aptly in identifying an heir.

Livramento, who was restricted to just two Premier League appearances across the 2022/23 campaign following his recovery from a long-term injury, is now hoping to return to full fitness and could find his comeback well-suited to the role as Trippier's understudy, making the increments to both fitness and form as he ascends to the upper echelon of full-backs in English football, already praised as "excellent" by England manager Gareth Southgate.

Once hailed for his semblance to Premier League legend Gareth Bale by former teammate Theo Walcott, Livramento looks to hold the qualities requisite for success at the zenith of the game, and why not continue his burgeoning rise at a team enjoying their own rise to the fore in Newcastle?

Walcott said:

"Do you know what, he reminds me a little bit of Gareth Bale when he came through as a full-back. That's a big statement of course to compare him to someone like that but just feel like his presence and the way he drives and the pace and the power and it's no surprise that you know what he's going to do."

Southampton defender Tino Livramento.

By utilising his pace, power and surging nature down the right flank, he could effectively contribute to both offensive and defensive sequences, which would aid winger Jacob Murphy in his efforts to succeed next season.

Murphy was a figure shrouded in shadow for much of his time on Tyneside after signing from Norwich City in a £12m move 2017 but played 36 times in the Premier League last season as Howe found good use of his industrious nature and "relentless" work rate – as was dubbed by Chris Waugh – and he now looks an indispensable member of a thriving outfit.

The £35k-per-week gem also ranks among the top 12% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries, the top 16% for touches in the attacking box and the top 17% for progressive passes received, as per FBref.

Effectively, this means that he would be well-placed to thrive with someone such as Livramento behind him, constantly pressing the player further up the pitch and allowing him to drift into promising openings in the danger areas, and Newcastle must now swoop.

Voges out for six weeks with calf tear

Adam Voges has been ruled out of county action for at least six weeks after suffering a torn calf muscle while batting for Middlesex against Somerset at Lord’s last week

Adam Voges has been ruled out of county action for at least six weeks after suffering a torn calf muscle while batting for Middlesex against Somerset at Lord’s last week.Voges, who had been on 86 at the time, sustained the injury to his right leg while jogging a single during Middlesex’s first innings, and had to be helped from the field. After a period of rest, to allow for the swelling to reduce, Voges’ calf was scanned on Tuesday when the full extent of the damage was revealed. He will now return to Australia to recuperate, and intends to return to England in late July in time to play in the NatWest T20 Blast match against Hampshire on August 3.”Losing Adam is naturally a blow as he contributes significantly to everything we do,” Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said, “whether it be with bat in hand, catching at slip or his general presence around the team.”His absence, however, does give opportunities to other players who are desperate to play in the first XI. In the past we have coped well without an overseas player and I expect us to do so now.”Voges had originally intended to return to Australia after next month’s County Championship fixture against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, in order for the county to register Brendon McCullum and Tim Southee as their overseas players for the NatWest T20 Blast.”Adam has now agreed to come back early at the end of July to be available for these games and all our remaining fixtures,” Fraser said. “By then Brendon will have travelled to the Caribbean to play in the CPL. Every indication we have had is that Adam will be fully fit and raring to go by then.”

Celtic: Rodgers Can Replace Jota With Swoop For £2.1m Wizard At Parkhead

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was rocked by the exit of one of his star players earlier this month as Portuguese winger Jota completed a move away from Parkhead.

The 24-year-old phenomenon opted to join Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad, where he will play alongside French internationals Karim Benzema and N'Golo Kanta, in a deal reportedly worth £25m.

However, the Hoops will not see all of that fee as Benfica, who sold him to the Scottish giants last summer, are due to receive £7.5m from their 30% sell-on clause.

£17.5m is still a hefty profit on the £6.5m they paid to sign the exciting winger on a permanent basis in 2022 and it could provide Rodgers with the funds he needs to find a replacement.

Who could replace Jota at Celtic?

The Northern Irish tactician could find Jota's heir by securing a deal to sign Yang Hyun-jun from South Korean side Gangwon FC this summer.

Former Celtic winger Jota.

Football Scotland reported earlier this month that the club have agreed to a £2.1m deal to sign the young winger but the K League 1 outfit are pushing to keep their prized asset until January as they battle against relegation to the second tier.

Celtic must now push to bring him in immediately as the potential is there for him to be an exciting replacement for Jota heading into the 2023/24 Scottish Premiership campaign.

Yang's form for Gangwon in 2022 suggests that he could be an excellent addition for Rodgers as the 21-year-old magician impressed in spite of his team's average season.

The South Korean side scored 47 goals in 33 league matches and lost more games (14) than they won (13).

During that time, the South Korea U23 international plundered eight goals – 17% of the club's total – and created six 'big chances' for his teammates, which was rewarded with five assists.

The talented youngster, who was described as "highly creative" by FC Twente philosopher and analyst Joost van der Leij, was able to showcase his attacking quality as a scorer and creator without playing in a successful team.

Now, imagine what he could do as part of a dominant Celtic squad that scored 114 goals and won 32 of their 38 Premiership matches last season. 17% of that goal tally would work out as 19 strikes, which highlights the difference playing in a more productive outfit can make for an attacker.

Jota proved himself to be a consistent performer out wide as he scored 11 goals and provided 11 assists in 26 league starts for the Hoops, with only Kyogo Furuhashi (27) able to boast a better goal return for the club.

Yang, who is three years younger than the Portuguese ace, may not have reached those impressive numbers at the top end of the pitch in his career so far but his form for a struggling Gangwon side in 2022 indicates that he could thrive if given the opportunity to line up as part of a lethal Celtic attack next season.

Therefore, Rodgers could unearth a dream replacement for Jota by getting a deal over the line for the South Korean whiz and helping him to adjust to playing in a thriving team, which could – in turn – improve his output in the final third.

Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground Suffers Damage In Severe Storm

Wrexham have been given positive news about the Racecourse Ground after it suffered numerous damages as it was hit by a severe storm in Wales earlier this week.

How bad was the damage?

Pictures have been released online of some of the damage caused to the Racecourse Ground following the storm, with numerous leaks springing up around Wrexham’s home.

One fan, who was enjoying a nice Father’s Day three-course meal at the ground with his dad when the storm hit shared footage on Twitter, revealing the extent of some of the damage.

The ground was flooded as a result of the leaks, but thankfully, it seems the damages aren’t as serious as they first looked.

What have Wrexham said about the damage?

A few days on, the club have now released an official statement on the Wrexham website in the aftermath of the storm.

Speaking to fans on the site, the statement read: “We are pleased to confirm that, following investigation into the large leak in the Macron Stand on Sunday (June 18), there is no structural damage to the stand.

“In the wake of the torrential rain that impacted the whole region on the day, the underground drains became overwhelmed which led to our downpipes and gutters to overflow. This led to a significant amount of water leaking into the Stand causing a suspended ceiling to collapse and damage to the internal decorations.

“Guests attending the third sitting of our Father’s Day meal in the 1864 Suite were safely escorted out of the building, as a precaution, in case the situation worsened and will be refunded in full.

“All the repairs will be carried out and completed long before fans are welcomed back into the Racecourse Ground for the new season.”

The news will come as a relief to fans, with the ground set to be good to go once the side gets their League Two campaign started in August.

How long have Wrexham been playing at the Racecourse Ground?

As one of the oldest football stadiums in the world, Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground is treasured by the club, and the news that it hasn’t suffered major damages will be welcomed by all associated with the team.

Having been formed in 1864, the Red Dragons have called the Racecourse Ground their home ever since. The club’s record attendance came in 1957 when Wrexham welcomed 34,445 spectators in to watch them take on Manchester United in the FA Cup, and it also hosted the club’s monumental FA Cup upset over Arsenal in 1992.

Wrexham v Arsenal, FA Cup match at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, 4th January 1992.David Seaman, Goalkeeper of Arsenal.Final score:Wrexham 2-1 Arsenal

While those days are long gone, with the current capacity sitting at just 10,771, don’t be too surprised if the club expand the ground’s capacity somewhere down the line as their status continues to grow worldwide under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes help England defend 321

England’s first win on the India tour came by a margin of only five runs as they staved off a fightback from Hardik Pandya and Kedar Jadhav, who scored 90 and came close to winning the match for India

The Report by Andrew Miller22-Jan-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details2:42

Agarkar: Need more pitches like at Eden Gardens

Chris Woakes pulled off the Kolkata grandstand finish that had eluded his team-mate, Ben Stokes, in last year’s World T20 final, as he held his nerve in the face of a supreme onslaught from India’s man of the moment, Kedar Jadhav, and delivered for England their first victory in India in eight matches and more than 10 weeks of touring. The end, when it came, was anticlimactic to all but the 11 relieved Englishmen in the outfield, and their nerve-shredded dressing room. With 16 runs to defend, Woakes recovered from being slammed for six and four in the first two deliveries of the game’s final over to chalk up four consecutive dot-balls, including the vital scalp of Jadhav for 90 from 75 balls, to seal a consolation win in the three-match ODI series. It was a supremely hard-earned victory at the end of an extraordinary series that has featured a grand total of 2090 runs in six innings – a record for a three-match rubber. And England’s effort was all the more impressive given that they lost the toss (and with it the chance to pace their innings against a measurable end-point) as well as one of their frontline seamers, David Willey, who had to withdraw from the attack with a shoulder injury after two overs. However, thanks to another tapestry of hard-hitting cameos all down the order – from Jason Roy against the new ball to Woakes and Stokes at the death – England ended up with just enough runs on the board. And when 321 for 8 on a sporty seamer’s surface equals “just enough”, you know the format has entered a new dimension. The foundations of England’s victory were laid by the opening pair of Roy and Sam Billings, who was playing in his first match of the series after Alex Hales’ withdrawal with a broken hand. From the outset, India’s seamers found bounce and movement from a probing line and length outside off stump to force a naturally aggressive duo to sit tight for their opportunities.Jonny Bairstow struck a brisk 56 to guide England’s innings•AFPTo both men’s credit, they did just that. Roy once again took the lead with his third fifty of the series while Billings played the holding role, contributing 35 to a 98-run stand that was only broken by the advent of the first drinks break.Bairstow, a late replacement for Joe Root, made 56 from 64 balls to keep England ticking along in the middle over, while Morgan, a centurion in Cuttack, showed once again that he’s rediscovered that pocket-battleship power that once set him apart among England one-day batsmen. The return of Hardik Pandya threatened another decisive momentum swing, as he picked off both set batsmen, plus a slightly subdued Jos Buttler, in a brilliant six-over spell that proved both incisive and restrictive. England, however, no longer know how to stop attacking in the closing overs, and Stokes in particular served notice of his intention to banish the memories of his last visit to Kolkata. He finished unbeaten on 57 from 39 balls, with Woakes chipping in with 34 from 19, as England posted a total that would have counted as formidable in any series.Nevertheless, having demonstrated the potency with the new-ball in defeat at Pune and Cuttack, the onus was on England’s seamers to strike hard and strike fast in the most favourable conditions they had encountered all winter. And they should, by rights, have done so with the very first delivery, when Woakes was shown on replay to have grazed Ajinkya Rahane’s glove with an off-stump lifter, but nobody thought to appeal.Rahane, however, did not detain them for long. He had been brought in as a replacement for the out-of-sorts Shikhar Dhawan, but managed just 1 from six balls before being bowled by a big inswinger from the left-arm seam of David Willey. Willey, however, struggled with his line, conceding five wides in two overs before clutching at his shoulder and leaving the field for treatment, never to return. His departure could have been a devastating blow for England in less conducive conditions, but fortunately their remaining four seamers closed ranks to good effect, allowing the spinner Moeen Ali to get through an impressive eight-over spell of Jadeja-esque pace and purpose that covered off Willey’s remaining workload. But India just kept coming. KL Rahul took a block-or-blast approach against the new ball, slotting a monstrous six over the covers in Woakes’ first over before falling to a similarly aggressive wallop when Jake Ball entered the attack as Willey’s replacement in the sixth.Virat Kohli calibrated the conditions in his inimitably forensic fashion, and set about pacing the chase with his second half-century of the series. On 35, Ball at deep backward square dropped a clanger as Plunkett banged in a bouncer – a terrible miss from a fielder who clearly had too long to think about the stature of the man who had launched the ball his way – but for once such a let-off wasn’t overly costly.Kedar Jadhav camped on the back foot and waited for England to bang the ball halfway down the track•AFPUnlike Pune and Cuttack, Kolkata kept on giving if the seamers were willing to bend their backs. And, in the 20th over, Stokes struck the big blow, luring Kohli into the drive with a bit of width outside off, for Buttler to complete a high take to his right as the ball kicked off the outside edge.Yuvraj Singh kept India’s innings ticking along for a while, climbing into a rare Moeen long-hop to batter a huge six over midwicket. But, on 45, he aimed in the same direction off the extra pace of Plunkett, and could only pick out Billings on the edge of the rope.MS Dhoni, too, was a victim of that extra spring in the pitch, as he climbed into a drive against Ball to snick another flying edge to Buttler. However, before his departure, he had demonstrated that Plunkett’s pace and bounce could work in India’s favour too, when he top-edged a pull that sailed over the keeper’s head for six. And Jadhav was in the mood to take that tactic and run with it.With Pandya a slap-happy accomplice, India’s sixth-wicket pair camped themselves on the back foot and waited for England to bang the ball half-way down the track. From a dicey scoreline of 173 for 5, they carved 104 runs from the next 83 balls, with a fusillade of boundaries to keep an asking rate of nine an over in constant sight.Jadhav smashed Woakes for back-to-back fours in his eighth over before bringing up his fifty with a stunning back-foot smash over long-on off Stokes from 46 balls, but Pandya was the revelation on this occasion – connecting with ferocity regularly, not least with a duck-and-pull six over fine-leg off Plunkett that brought up his maiden ODI fifty from 38 balls.A change of plan was needed as India brought the requirement down below fifty with five overs remaining, and Stokes once again delivered, finding a fuller inswinging length to beat Pandya’s ambitious wipe across the line and bowl him for 56 from 43 balls. One over later, Jadeja was gone as well, caught in the deep by Bairstow, but not before he had slaughtered Woakes’ fuller length for two of the hardest-hit boundaries of the night.Jadhav toasted Woakes’ final delivery straight down the ground, making it 16 off the over, and leaving India needing a very gettable 27 from the final three overs. Morgan responded by turning back to Stokes – the man whose death skills had deserted him so fatefully on his previous appearance at this venue, in last year’s World T20 final. This time, Stokes responded with skill and nerve, limiting India to four singles – one of them a harshy judged wide – in an over that also included the scalp of Ravi Ashwin, caught off a steepling top-edge as he tried, but failed, to take on the length ball just as Carlos Brathwaite had so triumphantly achieved nine months earlier.Still Jadhav wasn’t done, inside-edging another four past the keeper to keep India within reach, but a diet of low full-tosses from Ball kept his more aggressive intentions at arm’s length to leave Woakes defending 16 runs from the final over of the night.Cue Jadhav’s most outrageous stroke of the night – an open-shouldered slam for six over wide long-off, to reduce the requirement to 10 from five, and revive agonising memories of Stokes’ own implosion nine months earlier. When Jadhav followed up one ball later with another flat-bat for four over mid-off, Eden Gardens was ready for lift-off.But Woakes and his captain Morgan weren’t done yet, knowing full well that, at eight-down, one good delivery could still derail the chase. Instead, Woakes offered four, finding a consistently awkward length outside off that forced Jadhav to reach for his strokes. He reached, fatefully, with a drive into Billings’ midriff at long-off, and with him went the game.

Newcastle: £30m Signing Could Replace Burn At St James’

Newcastle United enjoyed an incredible season under Eddie Howe's tutelage and returned to Champions League qualification with a top-four finish, and have now identified Chelsea's Marc Cucurella for transfer.

What's the latest on Marc Cucurella to Newcastle?

According to the Mirror, Magpies technical director Dan Ashworth has added the Spanish full-back to the club's list of transfer targets after signing Cucurella while the pair for €18m (£15m) were both at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Having completed a stunning season with the Seagulls, the 24-year-old was signed by Chelsea for a mouth-watering £63m last summer, but after an uninspiring year Newcastle could look to provide him with a fresh start on English soil.

The Magpies have been in fine fettle indeed, but with the introduction of European football, the depth of the club will need to expand, and Cucurella could be the perfect choice to enrich the left flank, especially given that the Blues are considering a cut-price sale of just £30m.

How would Marc Cucurella perform at Newcastle?

Despite failing to produce the desired results at Chelsea, Newcastle could reignite a player who demonstrated he is Premier League quality and then some on the south coast.

Recording an average rating of 7.11 (Sofascore) with Albion over the 21/22 campaign, Cucurella completed 82% of his passes, averaging 1.2 key passes, 2.7 tackles and 1.9 clearances per game, also winning 61% of his ground duels, hailed for his "brilliant" performances by former teammate Leandro Trossard.

The disparity to his time at Stamford Bridge could not be greater, branded a "defensive liability" by journalist Okon Nya and at the core of the west London outfit's woes as they finished 12th.

However, provided a license to flourish at St. James' Park, Cucurella could return to the top of his game and leave observers waxing lyrical in their throngs once again.

Linking back up with his former teammate Dan Burn, who completed a £13m move from Brighton to Tyneside in January 2022, the £175k-per-week Chelsea ace could snatch the defensive left flank from the 31-year-old, cementing a starting berth for the most pivotal of encounters next season.

A centre-half by trade, Burn played 39 times at left-back this year after impressing in the makeshift role, with the 6 foot 5 colossus being heralded as "solid as a rock and immense" by journalist Aaron Stokes, but his stagnancy in transition is undoubtedly a weakness and the variation that Cucurella would bring is an enticing thought, with Burn having been 'dragged all over the place' on occasion, according to journalist Jude Summerfield.

As Newcastle progress and creep closer toward the forefront of European football, Cucurella's progressive presence could lead to him taking the baton and transcending Burn's performances in the team, proving to be the ultimate attacking heir down the left-hand side.

And given that the former Barcelona youngster can also play as a central defender, he could offer the dynamic assurance to win Howe over and play a pivotal role in a thriving Premier League outfit once again.

31-y/o Would Be Man United’s "Best Player" If He Joined This Summer

Neymar would be Manchester United's best player if he was to join the club in the summer transfer window, presenter Terry Flewers has claimed.

What's the latest on Neymar and Man United?

The Brazil superstar looks set to depart Paris Saint-Germain this summer, and the 31-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Newcastle and Man United two possible destinations.

Neymar has suffered with a lot of injury problems over the years, but has still provided 18 goals and 17 assists in 29 outings across all competitions this season.

Speaking on The Football Terrace, Flewers claimed that Neymar would be the best player at United as soon as he walked through the door, in terms of ability and status, but injuries may be of some concern.

"Ability, yes. Output, yes. The name, the man, the magic the skills, I want Neymar at Manchester United for all of these reasons," he stated.

"He would be the best player at the club by a country mile as soon as he arrives, whether he plays on the left instead of Rashford, whether he plays in a kind of 10, off the striker role instead of Bruno Fernandes, if he plays on the right instead of Antony or Sancho, this guy is better than all of them."

"The injury problems though, that's my worry. The injury situation surrounding Neymar is my only concern around him."

Should United pursue Neymar?

United are in the market for a forward, and have reportedly made Harry Kane their top target.

Neymar is a wide attacker rather than a central striker, but should he arrive, Rashford could move to a striker role to accommodate the 31-year-old.

His injury problems, combined with his £941k-per-week wages, means that Neymar looks more like he could follow the route of other big names who arrived and failed at Old Trafford, such as Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Bastian Schweinsteiger, but if he can stay fit, he could help raise United's level.

Erik ten Hag's side have made good progress this season, winning the Carabao Cup and securing a third-placed finish, but someone with Neymar's quality and experience could help turn them into title challengers.

Wingers Antony and Jadon Sancho have scored a combined 15 goals in all competitions, less than Neymar alone, and the Brazilian would be a significant upgrade on both in terms of end product.

If the finances on any deal for Neymar are reasonable, then the Red Devils could benefit in the short term, by having an attacker with Neymar's quality in the squad, even if he isn't available for the whole season.
