Americans Abroad: Christian Pulisic's injury woes, Tim Weah and Juventus' tough night and PSV's USMNT goal explosion

GOAL reviews key takeaways from Americans playing in Europe, including Pulisic's calf injury, more PSV scoring

The holidays are nearly upon us, and this weekend was a reminder for Americans Abroad that sometimes the soccer universse can be just as naughty as nice.

There was plenty of nice to go around in Eindhoven, for example, where PSV's Americans went wild in a big win. Everyone involved there continues to thrive and, as we continue on through the final few weeks of 2024, there's no sign of that coming to an end. PSV are cruising through the Eredivisie, scoring goal after goal with their Americans leading the charge.

As for the naughty, though, look no further than Milan. There was a big scare there as Christian Pulisic limped off early on against Atalanta, bringing back those pesky old concerns about his fitness. That injury will keep him out for the remainder of 2024 – so let it serve as a reminder of the risks that come with being a team's No. 1 superstar.

Games will becoming thick and fast now, which is usually a blessing and a curse. The final weeks of 2024 are upon us, and they promise to be pretty chaotic. GOAL looks at key takeaways from Americans Abroad this weekend.

GettyPulisic's injury concerns

Mauricio Pochettino was hammering the point home as early as October. Before he'd even managed a USMNT match, Pochettino was speaking about the importance of protecting Christian Pulisic.

Pochettino's words proved unfortunately prophetic. After several months of leading the charge for club and country, Pulisic's body finally broke down. The USMNT star was forced off in the first half of Milan's loss to Atalanta, and it was later confirmed that he'd sustained a calf injury.

The American star is now expected to miss the final few weeks of 2024, which isn't ideal but isn't a total blow for Milan, either. Pulisic is rather fortunate that the injury appears to be relatively manageable, although, given their place in Serie A, Milan will need to pick up a lot of slack and find results where they can without the USMNT star.

This feels like a warning shot from the soccer gods. Pochettino was aware of it when he called for Pulisic to be rested in October. Now, that message has been driven home with this injury setback.

AdvertisementAFPAmerica's team goes wild

If you're a fan of the USMNT and you aren't following along with PSV every week, you're missing out. The team's American stars are in the spotlight, and it's usually because of a wild goal or two.

On Friday, it wasn't a goal or two, though; it was three. Ricardo Pepi, Malik Tillman and Richy Ledezma each scored one a piece, leading the way in a 6-1 win over FC Twente. No matter how commonplace it's become with this team in recent weeks, it still seems surreal to see so many American players scoring week in and week out at this level.

PSV are running riot through the Eredivisie, with the club's Americans leading the charge. Pepi is second in the Golden Boot race. Tillman is fourth. Ledezma has carved out a role with Sergino Dest still waiting in the wings as he continues his road to recovery. It's already been a special season for PSV and, for American fans, there's plenty of reason to tune in so you don't miss the next goal explosion.

Getty Images SportWeah and Juventus fight back, but concerns remain

It's been a weird few weeks for Juventus. RIght now, just can't really find ways to win games, and that was the story on Saturday, too. Heavily favored against Bologna, Juve had to claw their way back to earn a 2-2 draw thanks to a late equalizer from Samuel Mbangula.

This, in general, wasn't pretty. Thiago Motta and Juventus still have a lot to figure out.

Moving Tim Weah back out wide was helpful, although he didn't look fully comfortable starting on the left-hand side. Weah picked up an early yellow and walked a tightrope all game long, struggling to really impact the attack in his 80 minutes. It just wasn't his day and, if not for two late goals, it wouldn't have been Juve's either.

Right now, something is off with this team. The return of Dusan Vlahovic has helped the attack, but things are still flat. The midfield doesn't feel totally right without Weston Mckennie. Defensively, Juve haven't been as solid as they need to be if they want to be legitimate Serie A contenders.

Right now, they aren't that, and all involved have a bit of work to do to get there.

There was a sequence in the final moments of Fulham's 1-1 draw with Arsenal Sunday in which Antonee Robinson went bursting forward. Wearing the captain's armband, Robinson darted forward on a 50-yard run, tracking down a ball that few on the field would have any reason to chase.

It was a perfect symbol of what Robinson brings to Fulham, and the perfect demonstration of why he's been handed the armband in Tom Cairney's absence.

Facing off with Bukayo Saka, Robinson was fantastic all game long as Fulham picked up a huge point against a title contender. Aside from one sequence in which a Saka goal was ruled out, Robinson really kept a lock on the Arsenal winger while making a few lung-busting runs forward himself to keep the Gunners defense honest.

By the end, Robinson had whipped in four crosses, made five passes into the final third, provided five clearances, made three interceptions and won eight of 13 duels. He was all over the field all through the 90 minutes.

It was a captain-worthy performance from Fulham's fill-in captain, who continues to play like one of the best in the Premier League.

Man Utd discussed move for striker who Alan Shearer says batters defenders

With attacking reinforcements clearly a high priority for Manchester United this summer, it appears that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Dan Ashworth are currently discussing new attacking options for the Red Devils.

Zirkzee just the start of United's attacking rebuild

The big news out of Old Trafford this week has been the seemingly imminent arrival of Bologna talisman Joshua Zirkzee. Erik ten Hag's men have long been the favourites to land the Netherlands striker with a recent update from Fabrizio Romano suggesting that all personal terms have now been agreed and Zirkzee has informed his current side of his intention to move to Manchester.

£120,000-per-week player set to leave Tottenham as Man United chase him

Erik ten Hag is among his summer suitors.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 4, 2024

United's quest for attacking talent does not stop with Zirkzee however as the club are currently linked with deals for a number of highly-rated forward players.

Jaden Philogene has been a surprise name that has done the rounds in recent days, but the Red Devils look set to lose out to Ipswich Town for the signature of the English winger. Bologna and Switzerland’s versatile attacker Dan Ndoye is also said to be a target for United with the Swiss press claiming that the 23-year-old's current side are asking for a fee in the region of £21million to secure his services.

With Ratcliffe and Co still targeting forward players, it appears that the club have been having internal discussions over a new striker to support the incoming Zirkzee.

Premier League duo in United's sights

As first reported by The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell, Manchester United have discussed both Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin internally as they look to further reinforce their striking options. Whilst talks have not progressed beyond these initial discussions, it is interesting to see a striker still high on the club's list of priorities.

Whilst it is unlikely that Toney would want to come to Old Trafford and be the third-choice option behind Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, Calvert-Lewin could be enticed with a fresh start in Manchester.

Across his time in the Premier League, Calvert-Lewin has scored 54 goals in 213 appearances, however has struggled for consistency in recent seasons. The 27-year-old managed just 7 goals in the league last season, suggesting that it may be time for him to leave Goodison Park this summer.

Despite his recent issues, when Calvert-Lewin is on form he is among one of the most dangerous strikers in the league. Speaking after the 27-year-old scored twice in a 3-1 win over Chelsea back in 2019, the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer was quick to praise the striker: “I was hugely impressed with [Calvert-Lewin] today because he absolutely battered the two centre-halves, Zouma and Christensen,

“He didn’t give them a moment’s peace. When you’re a forward, if you can’t win the header then make sure the defender doesn’t win it either. He did it all afternoon."

Whether he arrives as a back-up option or a temporary leading man, United could do a lot worse than an established top flight striker like Calvert-Lewin.

Liverpool could sign dream Van Dijk successor in £50m "monster"

Virgil van Dijk did little to allay the concerns that he is nearing the conclusion of his illustrious Liverpool career, speaking after the Netherlands lost against England in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

The Dutch skipper, of course, cut a dejected figure after Ollie Watkins' last-gasp winner, an agonising blow for Oranje and Van Dijk in their quest to claim their first slice of silverware since winning the Euros in 1988. But the seeds of fear have been planted nonetheless.

The 33-year-old, who Liverpool signed from Southampton for £75m in December 2017, hinted at an Anfield exit during one post-match interview, saying that he will "think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player", before entering the 2024/25 after a well-deserved break.

Virgil van Dijk for Netherlands

Van Dijk, the club's captain, is entering the final year of his £220k-per-week contract, and while Arne Slot and Co are confident that he will play a central role at the start of a new era, signing a successor would be a prudent move.

Liverpool transfer news

According to Tutto Juve – as reported earlier this week – Liverpool have submitted a €60m (£50m) bid for Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer this month, with FSG clearly seeking to strengthen the Anfield side's rearguard.

Juventus defender Gleison Bremer.

The 27-year-old is one of the Serie A giant's prized possessions but, with financial concerns simmering in Turin, could be cashed in on, with the Reds pushing for a deal.

What Bremer would bring to Liverpool

In an interview with DAZN back in February, Bremer cited Liverpool's captain as his inspiration, claiming that the Dutchman is "two steps" ahead of him. While this might be the case, the Old Lady's star centre-half has all the tools to craft a high-level career for himself.

While Bremer has yet to try his hand in the Premier League, he does seem to hold many properties that would suggest success on English soil, even described as "world-class" by CBS Sports commentator Matteo Bonetti.

As per FBref, the Brazilian ranked among the top 20% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues last season for goals scored and the top 16% for aerial duels won per 90, using his 6 foot 2 frame to the highest effect.

Juventus defender Gleison Bremer

Van Dijk, meanwhile, is one of the most aerially dominant defenders in history, blending such quality with an elite ball-playing ability, ranking among the top 20% of positional peers for assists, the top 10% for pass completion, the top 9% for progressive passes and the top 3% for aerial duels won per 90.

A "monster" of a defender – as noted by analyst Ben Mattinson – Bremer is the heart and soul of Juventus' backline and has the mobility, defensive dominance and technical prowess to succeed Van Dijk, stepping into his prime in the Premier League to lead Liverpool's project over the next several seasons.

As you can see, he might not be aligned with the staggering metrics of Van Dijk, but Bremer can certainly hold his own against the best that Europe has to offer, and Liverpool are right to consider such an exciting player.

Imagine him & Bowen: West Ham want to sign "world-class" £30m star

West Ham United have an ostensibly favourable run of fixtures for the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, with Julen Lopetegui no doubt pleased with the evenly spread strength of divisional opposition throughout.

Of course, the tale tells a different story indeed to the match action on the pitch, on the day, but it's promising nonetheless, with the Hammers in with a good chance to start strongly and successfully carry David Moyes' legacy into the new era.

Lopetegui will need to strengthen ahead of the new campaign, pointers suggesting that bolstering the frontline is the Spaniard's prime concern, with 18-year-old Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme already signed for £25m.

But the incomings won't stop there. According to reports over in Spain, the new boss is pushing to sign a talented LaLiga star.

West Ham transfer news

Reports on the continent claim that West Ham are insisting on driving for Ferran Torres' signature this summer despite the Barcelona star's desire to remain at Camp Nou.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

Barcelona are in a sticky financial situation and, at Hansi Flick's behest, would accept an offer of £30m for his sale. With Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur also interested in a deal, West Ham should start putting a convincing package together quickly.

Imagine Ferran Torres & Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen certainly didn't do it alone last season but the England international needs to see some purposeful transfer activity completed this summer, having often filled in at centre-forward.

Torres, like Bowen, is a dynamic and clinical attacking player, and while he wouldn't be the out-and-out striker signing that the Hammers would still need to complete, his sharp offensive weaponry – tried and tested in the Premier League – would be a real benefit.

As per FBref, the Spain international ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals but only the top 21% for total shots taken per 90, emphasising his striking prowess.

A degree of exciting fluency could be found in Bowen and Torres' partnership, with the Irons star scoring 20 goals last season but also creating 12 big chances in the Premier League, denoting the playmaking acumen that would provide the clinical Spaniard with a constant outlet.

After all, given that Torres has been dubbed “world-class” by former Barca boss Xavi, he clearly has a performance level that would enhance the current West Ham crop.

Jarrod Bowen for West Ham

Bowen is one of the most reliable forwards in the Premier League but for Lopetegui's tenure to start with a bang, he will need some added firepower.

Torres, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester City, may want to remain in his homeland but if push comes to shove, the London Stadium can offer a position of prominence back in the Premier League. Alongside Bowen, he could form quite a prosperous partnership.

Dillon du Preez to be assistant coach for South Africa women

Appointment of white ex-cricketer comes after CSA announced affirmative action policy for consultants

Dillon du Preez, the former Knights’ allrounder, has been appointed assistant coach of the South African women’s team. He replaced Salieg Nackerdien, whose contract was not renewed, and will work under Hilton Moreeng, who was reappointed on a three-year contract in July.Du Preez is the first appointment CSA have made since they announced their affirmative action policy for consultants, which attracted a complaint from the Institute for Race relations, who wrote to the ICC alleging discrimination. Du Preez is not an ad-hoc consultant and has been contracted to CSA, but he is white which, suggests that the organisation will not employ entirely exclusionary policies. Acting CEO Kugandrie Govender had earlier indicated that CSA would strive for inclusion when she spoke to ESPNcricinfo last week and emphasised that CSA are “not saying we don’t want any white people.” Govender’s comment came even after CSA were chastised by the South African sports minister Nathi Mthethwa for having too many white men in senior positions. For now the proof is in the hiring and the statement CSA sent out on Tuesday in which it confirmed it “has not taken and will not take a decision to work exclusively with black consultants.” Du Preez has been identified as one of the former players CSA want to keep in the system. He has experience coaching at the Free State province and Knights franchise and was the assistant coach for the Coronation team in the South African Women’s T20 Super League.”I am really honoured. I have been relishing such an opportunity and can’t wait to get going,” du Preez said. “A lot has been going on behind the scenes for a little while and obviously with the break I’ve had to wait a little while before formally joining the team, but now it’s finally come and I’m really excited and can’t wait to get going with Hilton and the rest of the girls.”The South African Women’s team have had three series affected by the covid-19 pandemic and have yet to have any future fixtures confirmed. They were due to host Australia in March, to travel to West Indies in June and were on the brink of heading to England in September but were denied permission to travel by the South African government. While individuals are allowed to leave the country for business purposes, national teams are not. That means that those women who have been contracted to the WBBL will travel to Australia.South Africa are also expected to announce an under-19 coach and an A team coach in the next few weeks. Malibongwe Maketa, who worked as the national assistant coach under Ottis Gibson, is expected to be among the frontrunners for either of these positions.

The prospect of Ronaldo continuing until he crosses the 1000 milestone has since been raised, and his national team manager said he would not rule it out, though he admitted he would settle for 100 more assists instead of goals.

WHAT MARTINEZ SAID

"I think scoring 900 goals is not easy. It is a historic, incredible feat, it is an inspiration for several generations and for football," he said. "But for me, what is important now is why Cristiano scored the goal. I think it was the performance. Very good, full of intelligence. Our striker is not just about goals. It is important. It is a number for the future, but for us the important thing is now.

"Cristiano's performance against Croatia was very important to open up spaces, to be able to win the game and work hard for the victory. I don't think anyone can say that Cristiano can't do something. It is incredible what he is doing in football. But for us the objective is collective. Cristiano can help, it is not just about goals. Assists are very important, if he can make 100 assists, I will be very happy."

West Indies CEO 'increasingly confident' England tour will happen

Grave says 25-man party set to fly around June 8, first Test likely on July 8

Interview by Nagraj Gollapudi24-May-2020How close are West Indies from taking the flight to England?
We are in the final stages of discussions with the ECB and they are in the final stages of finalising their plans in order to get the UK government and ECB board support. We are expecting to get a formal offer to tour England probably by the end of the month so that we can get our board’s approval and the players can potentially leave the region [the Caribbean] in early June.We heard that June 10 is when West Indies will leave for the tour. Is that correct?
We want four weeks before the first Test to prepare our team so we are currently planning on leaving the week starting June 8.So what are the Test match dates?
The current plan we are working to has the three Tests starting on July 8, July 16 and July 24. As for the venues, we believe it could be the Ageas Bowl and Emirates Old Trafford, but we haven’t had that formally confirmed yet.How many players would travel to the UK?
The working plan involves taking a 25-player squad to the UK. That would comprise the official Test squad of 15 players and 10 reserves.A week or so back you had expressed caution, suggesting there was a long way to go before the tour was on. What has changed?
What has changed is the ECB have got more confident that they’ve got a robust and safe plan to deal with cricket in a biosecure environment behind closed doors. Our medical team are getting more confident and comfortable with those plans. Our players and support staff who we have met with [on conference calls] are beginning to understand what a seven-week tour behind closed doors might look like. And the operations team are getting the logistics together for flying everyone from across the Caribbean to probably Antigua to then depart to the UK on a private team charter. So yes, good progress is being made and we are getting closer to that final plan for our [CWI] board to effectively sign off on the tour and ask the selectors to choose the squad and the players to confirm their participation.ALSO READ: Holder voices financial concerns as WI contemplate England tourCan you talk about that plan of assembling players and flying out to the UK?
Effectively we want to bring everyone to probably Antigua and that’s mainly because the regional airline LIAT have all their aircraft currently based here so it is easier for them to send planes to the islands to come back to this central hub. So we would look to convene players here by late afternoon, and they would get on a charter flight to the UK immediately after that. We don’t want players to have to stay overnight anywhere in the Caribbean. We want them to be tested about three-four days before departure date and subject to getting a negative test result, they would be chartered into Antigua and then chartered on one aircraft to the UK.The proposed schedule for West Indies’ tour of England•ESPNcricinfo LtdAnd once they land in the UK?
They would then be transported to their quarantine and training venue where they would spend about three weeks or so during which they can train. Can you elaborate on the testing process?
To make sure we are not taking testing kits away from anyone in the Caribbean we are going to test players and support staff privately. That also gives a consistency of results of using the same lab for the tests. Everyone would go and get tested in their local country, all those tests would be sent to Florida and the results would come out within – hopefully – 48 hours. As soon as our board approves the ECB final plan we would effectively select the squad and ask the ECB to book the charter plane. About four days before the charter plane leaves for the UK, everyone would get tested. What happens if someone tests positive once they are in England?
If someone tests positive at any stage in the tour they would be removed from the main squad and will be placed into isolation within the biosecure environment and will be treated by the team doctor along with the other on-site medical support staff. Should any player have more serious symptoms, they will be treated in hospital at pre-arranged facilities.ALSO READ: England bowlers return to trainingWhat happens if a player infected is playing a match?
One of the things that’s being discussed is if a player tests positive during a match, whether then, similar to a concussion substitute, the ICC would change the regulations to allow a replacement player to take the infected person’s place. There is an ICC chief executive committee meeting in early June where I understand those changes to the regulations or laws on the back of Covid-19 would be discussed and agreed following recommendations from the ICC Cricket Committee who recently met.Was this point discussed during the calls between ECB and CWI teams?
Yes, it has been. The Caribbean is almost Covid-19 free. However, they would have been tested prior to departure. They are then on private charters within the Caribbean, then a private charter to the UK. And then they enter a biosecure bubble where other than them and the people looking after them – groundstaff, catering and hotel staff – no-one else is allowed. Everyone else in that secure bubble has been tested. So the likelihood of coming into contact with someone who is Covid-19 positive is very, very low. And it is on that basis, and because of the robustness of the biosecure environment and the plans that our medical people are saying to us it is a safe environment. So the chances of someone catching Covid-19 are very, very small. The players would be in a very, very secure [and] very, very isolated environment for the first two weeks in quarantine, and then when they move into the biosecure Test venues everyone that they come into contact [with] would be in a restricted bubble, therefore not able to leave, and all of them would have been tested prior to coming into that environment and would continue to undergo random testing whilst they are there. You had also previously mentioned that West Indies players’ mindset would be very nervous going to the UK. Has that apprehension remained during your latest talks?
There is [still] player and support staff apprehension. There is apprehension about leaving their families for seven weeks. There is apprehension about moving into a biosecure cricket ground for the first time. There is apprehension about travelling on planes and going to the UK, which has had so many cases.[There is] also some apprehension around getting back to the Caribbean around what the quarantine requirements may be in their home countries. It is such a dynamic situation, but we hope that if they were tested prior to their departure of the UK and if they need be tested again when they come back to the Caribbean that by late July, they wouldn’t have to do any quarantine back here. But clearly, each Caribbean country may have different rules and restrictions so we can’t be certain at this stage. So there is some fear and apprehension, not just about leaving the Caribbean to go on the tour but also getting back home to be reunited with their loved ones.West Indies are set to defend the Wisden Trophy in England this summer•Randy Brooks/AFPRecently Jason Holder, West Indies Test captain, likened the Caribbean player’s plight to a frontline worker who has to go to hospital every day. Holder felt the longer players stay away, the greater the monetary impact. Do you agree with him and will the monetary aspect play a role in the tour taking place?
Jason is right. As the economies of the world start to open up again and people start returning to their places of work people will no doubt feel a bit nervous and anxious and the circumstances in their offices and workplaces will probably be a bit different too. Cricketers are therefore no different, they are getting back to work. What we have to do as their employers is ensure that their work environment is as safe as it possibly can be.So no player has expressed any concern then?
Players have concerns, but certainly I have had no feedback that a player has said, based on what we know now and what we have shared, that they won’t tour. No-one has directly come out and said they won’t tour, but we haven’t formally asked them yet.Financially CWI has been struggling for a long time. West India are also taking a risk by agreeing to tour. Did a thought that we will skip as the risks are too high pass your mind?
Not from a financial point of view. Our focus has very much been on making sure that it is safe for our players first and foremost and then if it is fulfilling the obligations of the FTP which we signed up and committed to. If we were going to have to pay for the costs of all the mitigating factors then the tour wouldn’t be on. If we had to pay for the additional costs of chartering planes or taking an additional 10 members of the squad in order to prepare on our own then this tour wouldn’t go ahead. The way the FTP is structured, we are responsible as the touring team for our player match fees and allowances as well as our travel costs to the UK. All other costs for the tour would be picked up by the ECB as they keep all the revenue. Due to the nature of the fact that we cannot fly commercially either within the Caribbean to one fixed point of departure or across the Atlantic, the charter flights and any other additional or exceptional costs that we would incur on this tour would be met by the ECB.So the tour is then going to happen?
From where we sit at the moment, based on the information we have, based on the fact that every day there are less and less cases in the UK everyone is getting increasingly confident that the tour will happen at some point. Our board meeting is on May 28. If the tour has to take place, by the start of June we would need to have the [CWI] board approval and support by then in order to get the charter flight logistics in place and select the players.
