Wolves In "Negotiations" For "Creative" £28k-p/w Neves Heir

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in ongoing "negotiations" regarding a summer deal to bring Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez to the Premier League, according to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo.

Who is Guido Rodriguez?

Rodriguez is naturally a defensive midfielder who has played his football at the Benito Villamarin Stadium for the past three years since joining from CF America back in January 2020, and during that time, he’s become a regular feature of Manuel Pellegrini’s side having started 33 out of 38 La Liga matches last season.

However, the 29-year-old’s contract is set to expire in less than a year meaning that there’s a strong chance he could be sold for a decent fee before the end of the current transfer window, and should he depart, he won’t be short of potential suitors waiting to snap him up.

The Argentina international firmly established himself as the Spanish outfit’s both defensive and overall top-performing player with a WhoScored match rating of 6.98 during the previous campaign, and it appears that his high standard of displays have caught the eye of Fosun and Julen Lopetegui at Molineux.

Are Wolves signing Guido Rodriguez?

Taking to Twitter, Merlo revealed that Wolves are currently in talks for Rodriguez, though at this stage, it doesn't sound as if a deal is anywhere close to completion between the two parties. He wrote:

"Wolves is interested in signing Guido Rodriguez, a Betis midfielder whose contract ends in June 2024. There are negotiations underway between the clubs, but for now nothing close to being finalised."

Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez.

Wolves recently lost their talisman in Ruben Neves, who has completed a move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal, so Lopetegui will need to enter the market for a suitable replacement in that defensive midfield position, and having been lauded a “creative” number six by journalist Josh Bunting, Rodriguez could be the perfect heir.

Last season he ranked in the 99th percentile for tackles and the 98th percentile for clearances versus other players in his position, form which saw him receive three man-of-the-match awards, highlighting his desire to get stuck in and clear the danger to protect his backline.

Real Betis’ £28k-per-week earner, however, is also capable of contributing to efforts in the final third having scored seven goals and provided three assists since joining, so the fact that he’s impactful at both ends of the pitch will be yet another attractive attribute to those at Molineux.

Furthermore, the Betis star has the flexibility to operate in four different positions across the pitch, including three roles in the midfield and even at centre-back, so he would be an excellent versatile option for the manager to have at his disposal.

Finally, Rodriguez already knows what it takes to compete and be successful at the highest level having secured eight pieces of silverware since the start of his career, the most notable being when he was crowned 2022 World Cup champion with Argentina, so he could instil a much-needed winning mentality into the rest of the squad in the Midlands.

Man United: Romano drops “important” transfer update

Manchester United are still interested in signing Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina this summer but reports of an official bid have been dismissed by Fabrizio Romano.

Is Amrabat joining United?

While not the most glamorous signing of the summer, a deal for Fiorentina's Amrabat would certainly be an excellent piece of business for any side willing to make a move for the defensive midfielder.

Having excelled at the 2022 World Cup with Morocco, helping his nation become the first African team to ever make a semi-final of the competition, Amrabat continued his fine form heading into the second half of a hectic campaign.

Fiorentina reached both the Coppa Italia and Europa Conference League final, losing both 2-1 as their first piece of silverware since the 1996/97 season narrowly evaded them.

Amrabat was crucial to La Viola's success and looks set to finally move onto bigger and better things this summer with a host of Europe's top clubs circling the 26-year-old.

The midfield enforcer has been long linked with Erik ten Hag's Man United and journalist Romano believes that the Red Devils retain a strong interest in him, albeit dismissing any rumours suggesting an official bid has been placed.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stated: "Also important guys to mention about midfielders – Sofyan Amrabat. Many of you asking me about reports of a bid from Man United. Guys, from what I'm hearing, Man United have not made an official bid for Sofyan Amrabat yet.

"Because as I told you days ago, I told you here on my platforms, Sofyan Amrabat is on the list at Manchester United. They like him, they want to negotiate for Sofyan Amrabat, but they know that Fiorentina want something around €40-35m [£34-30m].

"So, at the moment the priority at Man United is the new striker and then, after the Hojlund deal, they will focus on potentially new midfielder and new centre-back."

He added: "Outgoings are crucial. Man United are convinced that Fred will leave the club and so this could be the first step, and then they can have conversations for Sofyan Amrabat."

Given United are unlikely to move for a midfielder until they have sorted their striker situation, a deal for Amrabat could be some way off.

Fred has been linked with a move to Fulham and such a move could pave the way for Amrabat to make the switch to Old Trafford. Scott McTominay has also been linked away which would free up even more space for the Moroccan in midfield.

Who are Man United signing?

Now that deals for Mason Mount, Andre Onana and somewhat surprisingly Jonny Evans have been finalised, United are eager, as mentioned by Romano, to add Rasmus Hojlund to their ranks.

The 20-year-old Atalanta forward appears to be the Red Devils' priority but a potential fee of £86m means a deal is not nearing completion at present. Ten Hag is not willing to sanction such an expensive move for a relatively inexperienced player, with United hopeful of reducing La Dea's asking price.

Randal Kolo Muani or Dusan Vlahovic could be alternatives, although both would likely command similarly high transfer fees. However, both strikers offer more top-flight experience to Ten Hag than Hojlund.

There are of course other midfielders on Ten Hag's wishlist, with a bold move for Joshua Kimmich having even been touted, while his Bayern Munich teammate Leon Goretzka is also reportedly being followed by the Red Devils in what would prove to be a similarly difficult transfer to pull off.

Hobbling Root gets England up and running with classy century

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details3:31

Fleming: Bangladesh had a very light bowling attack

An ankle and calf injury set aside, Joe Root put together a masterful unbeaten career-best 133 to power England to an eight-wicket win in their opening Champions Trophy match over Bangladesh, who would rue two major mistakes: not scoring enough in the last five overs and picking one less bowler. Two big partnerships supported England’s successful 306-run chase. Root’s 129-ball innings included 11 fours and a six, with Eoin Morgan by his side; the captain was not out on a 61-ball 75 that had eight fours and two sixes. The pair were responsible for the 143-run unbroken third-wicket stand after Alex Hales and Root added 159 for the second wicket. After Tamim Iqbal’s splendid 128 gave them a fair chance of an opening day win, Bangladesh missed out on a few more runs after Tamim and Mushfiqur Rahim fell off consecutive deliveries in the 45th over, having added 166 for the third wicket. They were timing the ball really well but those who followed could only add 44 in the last 5.2 overs.More importantly, Bangladesh went to work without an extra specialist bowler. The captain Mashrafe Mortaza had to rotate carefully between himself, Mustafizur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan and Rubel Hossain, and also give enough overs to Mosaddek Hossain, who is at best a part-timer at this level. It didn’t work out too well for them.England’s chase began with a wobble as the out-of-touch Jason Roy scooped one towards short fine-leg where Mustafizur dived to take a stunning one-handed grab. But Mashrafe never quite looked comfortable rotating his bowlers as he had to always keep using a part-timer.And just like Tamim and co used the absence of Chris Woakes, so did Hales, Root and Morgan. First, it was the Hales-Root second wicket partnership that set England on the right course.Hales punished anything Bangladesh pitched short or too full, carving boundaries in his exclusive manner. He struck five boundaries in the arc between backward point and extra cover, apart from the straight sixes and the pushed fours through midwicket four times.Hales and Root, who hurt his ankle while trying to pull the ball in the 26th over, batted sensibly apart from the odd hack through the leg side. Hales, though, missed out on a century when he got greedy against part-timer Sabbir Rahman; a four and a six were hit, but then his slog sweep found the substitute Sunzamul Islam at deep midwicket.Root though, hardly missed a beat as he forged another quick partnership with Morgan for the third wicket. He struck three fours through the covers and twice through midwicket, and one slipped past the wicketkeeper. With Morgan picking up the pace of the innings, it was only a matter of time that Mashrafe tried to attack with his lop-sided bowling line-up. It was ultimately Mashrafe himself who created the chance in the 36th over but Tamim’s diving effort at long-on from Morgan’s lofted drive was given not out, first in a soft signal by on-field umpire S Ravi, and then followed up by the third umpire Bruce Oxenford.Root reached his 10th ODI hundred by running two in his hobbling state. He scampered whenever Morgan had pushed him, never complaining as he bashed around more boundaries in the last 10 overs.Bangladesh too banked on a big partnership: the Tamim-Mushfiqur third-wicket stand that yielded 166. The pair have often collaborated together when the chips are down but this time Mushfiqur walked in after Tamim had laid a solid foundation by the 20th over. Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes had fallen just after getting set at the crease.Tamim batted resolutely in the face of Mark Wood’s bouncer barrage, but his approach factored in Woakes walking off with a left side strain after bowling just two overs. He laid into Liam Plunkett and teed off every time Moeen Ali floated one up to him. Tamim struck two superb straight drives, and the moment he got the hang of the shorter length, started pulling the ball quite well. Two of his three sixes were off Moeen, hit over the offspinner’s head while he also swung Wood over long-leg for the third six. Tamim was also delicate with deliveries angled to his body, working them fine either side of the wicketkeepers. He wasn’t fed too many full balls so there weren’t any cover driven boundaries in his innings.Mushfiqur’s 79 came off 72 balls, at a time when Tamim needed the batsman at the other end to push hard. He was severe on Jake Ball, hitting him for five of his eight boundaries. He was quick on his feet and until he over-hit Plunkett to long-on, Mushfiqur looked good for a century. In a game of small margins and with England playing without Adil Rashid, Plunkett’s last two overs that went for just seven runs, made a big difference as Bangladesh couldn’t find too many boundaries in the last five overs. That final push from Plunkett was complemented by the batsmen who chased down the 300-plus total with much ease. It would serve as a warning for the rest of the tournament, that England can and will keep stepping on the gas regardless of their situation.

Six Associate players in final IPL auction list

A total of 351 players, which includes 122 capped internationals, will feature in the IPL auction, scheduled to be held in Bangalore on February 20. The final roster was pruned from the original list of 799 players, after the eight franchises submitted their wishlists to the IPL.Fast bowler Ishant Sharma is one of the seven players with a maximum base price of INR 2 crore – approximately US $298,000 – for the tenth player auction. The other six include three England players – allrounder Ben Stokes, ODI and T20I captain Eoin Morgan and allrounder Chris Woakes – two Australian fast men Mitchell Johnson and Pat Cummins, and Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews. In the initial list there were 160 capped players from nine countries – none from Pakistan – and 639 uncapped ones. The final list also contained six players from the Associates, including five from Afghanistan: captain Asghar Stanikzai, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad, Rashid Khan and Dawlat Zadran. Shahzad and Rashid have the highest base prices among the five at INR 50 lakh. UAE batsman Chirag Suri was the other Associate player in the list.Seamer Sudeep Tyagi, who has played four ODIs, is the only one to have been cut from the original list of 24 capped Indian players.Considering they will have to put a majority of their players back into the auction in 2018, some franchise officials said they would not be too aggressive in buying players this season. However, they did agree that there would be considerable interest in the English players.Although the IPL is yet to decide on the retention rules, franchises expect the right-to-match option to be available. This allows a franchise to buy back a specific number of the players they have released for the auction by matching the highest bid those players attract. If they match the bid, they get the player.

Celtic Fall Behind In Race For £4.2m-Rated Liverpool Ace

Celtic have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Leighton Clarkson, with news from Football Insider reporter David Lynch that Aberdeen are now leading the race for the player's signature.

Are Celtic linked with Leighton Clarkson?

The current Liverpool player was given the chance to shine out on loan in the 2022/23 season, joining up with Aberdeen on a short-term basis to get valuable first-team minutes. He went on to manage more games than ever before in his career, featuring on 34 occasions as the side finished in third place. The 21-year-old also managed a haul of five goals and eight assists along the way – career best totals for the youngster.

Prior to his spell in the Scottish Premiership, his only other gametime had come during a loan with Blackburn. He managed only seven league games for the Championship side though and couldn't produce any goals or assists.

Given plenty of minutes in Scotland, he impressed many and there is now a race for his signature. Celtic are one of the clubs that had been mentioned as having a keen interest in the player this summer, with the Hoops eager to add him to their ranks.

Even though the club have been managerless, Brendan Rodgers is now close to securing the job and he could have been one of the first signings to arrive for the new boss.

However, according to a report from Football Insider, Celtic – and perhaps Rodgers – will not get their wish.

That's because Aberdeen are believed to now be leading the race to sign him above the league winners and it means that they could now miss out on his signature. Having had the player on loan last season, the Dons have the advantage of knowing the youngster well and it would likely not take much for him to slot back in.

Has Leighton Clarkson played for Liverpool?

The 21-year-old has never managed to play in the Premier League for Liverpool and it now appears that he could be off in pursuit of regular first-team football. It's unclear how much he would cost the interested parties, although CIES Football Observatory suggest his value is around 5 million Euros (or £4.2m).

It means that any deal would likely not break the bank for Clarkson and he could be a bargain deal for any club that does sign him. Considering the player is now experienced in Scotland and has the ability to both score and assist in the league, he looks like he could be a solid purchase for any club – and Celtic likely wouldn't be happy to therefore see him join Aberdeen.

Joao Felix Drops Hint About Future On Instagram

Joao Felix has dropped a possible hint about one day maybe playing in MLS as his future remains undecided having returned to Atletico Madrid after his loan at Chelsea.

Who will Joao Felix join this summer?

The 22-year-old didn't quite live up to the hype in the Premier League and he leaves the Blues have picked up one red card, scored four goals, and delivered zero assists in 20 games across all competitions.

Despite that, there will likely still be a number of teams who want to sign the player as manager Diego Simeone has suggested that Felix could be off in the summer.

He told Partidazo Cope (via Goal): "It is necessary to see if economically it is good for the club. I no longer enter there. He is a boy who has qualities, who plays well, who everyone talks about and hopefully he can crush it. With us he has always had peaks, he has had bad luck with injuries."

On top of that, though, Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has stated that Chelsea won't be signing Felix permanently and so his future remains up in the air.

The Portuguese international has been active on social media recently, and the images could suggest he's keen on playing in MLS one day – even if that's not likely to happen particularly soon.

Indeed, Felix posted several photos of himself playing tennis in a Charlotte FC shirt on his Instagram page.

Why was Felix wearing a Charlotte FC shirt?

In the photos, the 22-year-old can be seen wearing a shirt with the name Nuno Santos on the back – he is Felix's former Benfica team-mate who now plays for Charlotte.

And so, perhaps this is just a reunion of old friends as opposed to any major transfer hint that might tell us which step the player will take next in his career.

Even so, you can never rule anything out in football. What's more, even if Felix doesn't head to America this summer, his now evident connections with MLS could mean a move might happen at some point in the future.

For now, though, it does seem more likely that he'll either remain in Madrid or find another big European club to impress at next summer.

For instance, one recent rumour suggests he could be heading back to the Premier League but this time he'll get a chance to impress with Newcastle United.

Alemany Eyeing Villa Swoop To Sign £167k-p/w Phenomenon

An update has emerged on Mateu Alemany and his possible transfer targets after arriving as Aston Villa's new sporting director this summer.

What's the latest on Marco Asensio to Aston Villa?

According to Spanish outlet Sport, the current Barcelona chief is 'almost certain' to join the Villans and he is already eyeing up Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio as one of his first pieces of business.

The report claims that the winger and ex-Manchester City attacker Ferran Torres are both potential signings that the director could make at Villa Park.

It is stated that Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens will give Alemany and manager Unai Emery money to spend on signings and the pair could look to the La Liga market to bolster the squad.

How has Marco Asensio performed this season?

The 27-year-old gem, who is out of contract this summer, has been in phenomenal form for Real Madrid in the Spanish top flight and could come in as a big upgrade on current Villa maestro Leon Bailey.

In La Liga, the Spaniard has plundered nine goals and six assists, whilst creating eight 'big chances' for his teammates, in 14 starts (28 appearances).

Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio.

He ranks in the top 9% of players in his position in Europe's top five leagues over the last 365 days for non-penalty goals and assists per 90 respectively, which shows that the attacker is one of the most productive wingers, in terms of goals and assists, at the top level.

Former Real star Guti once heaped praise on the talented magician, saying:

“Asensio is a lot better player than I was. He has an unlimited ceiling, his head is very well-furnished and will depend on what he wants to do in the world of football. The future is in his feet."

His current form suggests that the Spanish gem is starting to fulfil his potential by proving himself to be one of the most reliable attackers in Europe, and he could still have more development to go through at the age of 27.

On the other hand, it feels as though Bailey's progression has stagnated. Indeed, he has scored just four goals and provided four assists in 24 Premier League starts (31 appearances) and created seven 'big chances' for his teammates.

The Jamaica international does not rank higher than the top 46% of players in his position for non-penalty goals or assists per 90 in Europe's top five leagues over the last 365 days.

These statistics do not stand out as being particularly impressive for a wide player who is tasked with being a difference-maker in the final third and they look disappointing in comparison to Asensio's impressive numbers.

Therefore, Alemany could land Emery a big upgrade on Bailey by swooping for the £167k-per-week winger ahead of next season.

Tottenham Manager News: Enrique Can Revive Awful £27.5m Flop

Tottenham Hotspur have slowly cultivated an unwanted toxic atmosphere within the club, which more recently has spilled over onto the pitch.

The players have been struggling for some time now, resulting in their abhorrent form which has brought just one win since early March.

With European football seriously in jeopardy and Ryan Mason the man expected to steady the ship, their need for a new permanent manager to enter the dugout has never felt greater. Daniel Levy is clearly aware of this, hence the ever-changing nature of the favourite, amongst the various candidates.

One such name which refuses to lose traction is that of Luis Enrique, who reportedly came in for talks earlier this week alongside Julian Nagelsmann.

The Spaniard boasts a huge pedigree and has overseen some of the world's top talents during his impressive career in management. However, he will have never experienced a dressing room like this.

luis-enrique-sergio-busquets-dier

It will take some serious upheaval to transform the failing Lilywhites culture, gutting the majority of the playing staff of the losers that have come before.

Whilst many would push Eric Dier to the front of that list, Enrique's work with Sergio Busquets could pose an interesting thought experiment with regard to the future of the 29-year-old.

Having featured in defensive midfield before, but predominantly as a centre-back of late, the inconsistent England international could occupy the former role with the perfect tutor to mould him in the image of one of the best to have ever done it.

Can Eric Dier be Luis Enrique's next Sergio Busquets?

Busquets is a true legend of the game, yet has never been famed for his exceptional technical quality. Having so often been surrounded by true show-stoppers, partnering Xavi and Iniesta in a midfield sat just behind Lionel Messi, the general has been happy performing out of the limelight.

However, it is this selflessness and willingness to silently do the dirty work that has made him ever-present in some of the greatest footballing sides of our generation, as well as being Enrique's most-used player (181 appearances) throughout his career.

The 34-year-old powerhouse was a mainstay for Spain during their historic 2010 World Cup and subsequent EURO 2012 victory, and boasts as many as eight La Liga titles alongside three Champions Leagues with Barcelona.

No matter the turmoil or changes that have gone on around him, the midfield anchor has remained a constant.

Breaking up play and offloading to a more technically proficient teammate; it is a role that could certainly benefit Dier, who often draws scorn for trying too much when his quality is often lacking.

Back in 2021, pundit Frank McAvennie even suggested that the dud was "awful" and "not good enough" for Spurs.

This season, where he has featured mainly at centre-back, the £27m-rated titan has only managed a 6.88 average rating. The move into defence was one initiated by Jose Mourinho, but whilst part of Mauricio Pochettino's engine room from 2015 to 2018, his average rating instead did not drop below 7.01.

The pinnacle of this role came during the 2016/17 campaign, where his 7.10 rating was maintained by an 87% pass accuracy, 1.4 tackles and 4.1 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

It is clear that within the right system, Dier can thrive in midfield, With Enrique's expertise and a philosophy that would get the best out of the £85k-per-week flop, perhaps the Spaniard could be the catalyst that transforms this player and the club as a whole.
