We were sloppy in the field – Virat Kohli

The India captain rued the less-than-perfect fielding efforts during India’s defence of 358, and a DRS decision that went Ashton Turner’s way in the chase

Dasgupta: Pant’s missed stumping of Turner crucial

Reviewing India’s four-wicket defeat to Australia in Mohali on Sunday, Virat Kohli pointed to his side’s poor fielding – a number of opportunities were missed – as well as a “game-changer” of a DRS decision as big reasons for the result.Australia, set up by a hundred from Peter Handscomb and an unbeaten 43-ball 84 from Ashton Turner, chased down a target of 359, the fifth-highest chase in ODI history. Turner was given a reprieve following a review – when the batsman was on 41 – only a few balls after India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant had missed a stumping opportunity against the batsman one of the many instances of India’s struggles in the field.”Yeah, crucial. We were sloppy in the field. We were not at our best, and we should have grabbed those chances and made the most of the opportunity when it came by,” he said.”But the DRS call [when Turner was ruled not out on review for a caught behind, with Australia needing 66 from 39 deliveries] as well, was a bit of a surprise for all of us. It’s becoming more of a talking point every game. It’s just not consistent at all, and that was a game-changer moment as well. But yeah, that’s more of an uncontrollable, but the controllable we had to do right, and we didn’t do it right, and the opportunity slipped away.”The review in question came about in the 44th over, when Yuzvendra Chahal beat Turner’s swishing blade, with ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentator noting: “India have reviewed a caught behind, but the impression I got is the batsman was through with the shot even before the ball arrived. But they’ll look for stumping first, and then for caught behind. Stumping seems fine. They went up for stumping because the square leg umpire went up immediately. India have reviewed for caught behind. Replays confirm a big spike but it was after it passed the bat. End result is, wide.”During the third ODI in Ranchi, the ball-tracking technology came under scrutiny during Aaron Finch’s lbw dismissal. With Turner carrying on to hit an unbeaten 84, Australia dashed past India’s 358 for 9 with 13 balls in hand on what must now be one of their favourite grounds in India. Mohali is where they won the 1996 World Cup semi-final against West Indies and then, many years later, pulled off a thrilling chase in the third ODI of the 2013 series against India. The dew was also a factor, Kohli said, conceding its impact on the Mohali and Ranchi ODIs. In the third ODI in Ranchi, India expected the dew to have a say in the second innings, but it didn’t, while in Mohali, India came off worst on that count.”We’ve been on the wrong side of the dew twice in two games, but that’s not an excuse,” said Kohli. “Especially with five down, giving ten runs an over in the end was a bit of a harsh pill to swallow, but, look, it was very difficult to bowl in the end.”The guys tried their best, but Ashton played a hell of a knock. [Peter] Handscomb played a really good innings too, to hold the innings together. [Usman] Khawaja was good again, but I think Ashton was the game-changer.””Last game, we were told there was going to be dew, we were on the wrong side of that. We had a good wicket to bat on, [and] Australia would have done the same. So, again they just played better again in the second innings, and that’s something you just have to accept.”

Man Utd could sign their next Di Maria in “unplayable” £61m star

For the standards of such a prestigious club like Manchester United, Erik ten Hag’s side have been dreadful, with Tuesday night's exit from the Champions League and finishing last in Group A summing up their season so far.

The Red Devils have already lost seven games in the Premier League, just two less than their entire loss tally last season in the top flight. Furthermore, they have lost three of their last four matches in all competitions, failing to score in each defeat.

With that in mind and Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Facundo Pellistri unable to secure the right-wing spot in the United team – the trio all failing to score this season – Ten Hag may be forced to scan the transfer market for a solution.

Man Utd transfers latest – Raphinha

According to Sport via TEAMtalk, Ten Hag wants to complete a swap deal for Raphinha, with Sancho going the other way.

raphinha-transfer-gossip-arsenal-edu-arteta-barcelona-mohammed-kudus

The Barcelona winger has only started five La Liga matches this season, but he is willing to fight for his place in Catalonia, and he is uninterested in a move away.

The Brazilian currently has a transfer market value of £52m, whereas Sancho is valued at £28m, making the swap deal unrealistic and extremely unlikely, especially with his current club said to be demanding €70m (£61m).

Raphinha’s style of play

The 26-year-old took the Premier League by storm when he joined Leeds United in 2020, scoring 17 goals and registering 12 assists across two seasons.

Raphinha was “unplayable” in a Leeds shirt, according to AllLeedsTV presenter Oscar Marrio, and he was without doubt the standout player in a relatively poor team. This season for Barcelona, he has seven goal contributions in just 15 games.

Former Leeds forward Raphinha.

The Brazilian could become the next South American left-footed winger to join Manchester United from a La Liga giant, following in the footsteps of Angel Di Maria.

The duo have the ability to create a piece of magic from nothing on a football field, and they also possess similar traits, as shown in the table below.

As you can see, the wingers are both creative masterminds who can progress the play through passing and create chances for their teammates, which is exactly what United are missing currently on the right, with Antony failing to register an assist in 17 appearances for his side this season.

Raphinha is a player who loves to take on responsibility, whether it is creating or attempting to score himself. Although it is displayed by the stats above, such as his shots total and xA, his competitive must-win attitude and relentless mentality would instantly improve Ten Hag’s side, in a similar way to how Alejandro Garnacho approaches the game on the left.

There is no question that Raphinha would be a great addition to the Manchester United attack, but the fears may be that a repeat scenario to that of Di Maria could occur, with the Argentine lasting just one season at Old Trafford following his £60m switch from Real Madrid.

Man Utd could sign Matic 2.0 who's "streets ahead of McTominay"

The international could establish control in the Red Devils midfield.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Dec 11, 2023

Of course, Raphinha has prior experience in English football, unlike the current Benfica star, yet getting burned by another high-profile La Liga signing should not be high on United's agenda – either in January or over the summer.

Kroenkes now "ready to spend" £50 million on signing player for Arsenal

Arsenal's board, headed by Josh and Stan Kroenke, are willing to back manager Mikel Arteta "to the hilt" as journalist Wayne Veysey shares news on their January transfer plans.

Edu plotting 2024 moves

Sporting director Edu and the Gunners board spent north of £200 million on new recruits over the summer transfer window, but reports this last fortnight suggest they may be ready to go again.

Thomas Partey's injury blow, coupled with rumours the Ghanaian may even depart in January, has apparently prompted Arsenal to look at other options. Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny are also out of contract at the end of the Premier League season, meaning Arteta could be left very short of midfield numbers by this time next year.

There is believed to be a willingness to sign a new midfielder as Arsenal eye a future partner for Declan Rice, with Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz and Fluminese sensation Andre both linked in the last two weeks.

Meanwhile, there have also been claims that Arsenal are keen on signing a new striker, with Brentford star Ivan Toney reportedly near the top of their wishlist. It will be interesting to see how the north Londoners reinvest in their squad given Edu's lavish summer spending, but it appears Arsenal are ready to back Arteta yet again in the new year.

Arsenal chiefs "ready to spend" £50m on player

The Spaniard has guided Arsenal to eight wins from a possible 12 in the Premier League so far, with Arsenal looking like sure-fire contenders for their first title in nearly 20 years.

In a show of faith, Arsenal chiefs are "ready to spend" £50 million on a "single player" in January, as they wish to further reinforce Arteta's potential challenge.

The club's board, led by Stan and Josh Kroenke, are apparently ready to pump money into the squad despite their marquee player deals earlier this year. That is according to Football Insider, who also state that Arsenal are indeed keen to bring in a new defensive midfielder above all.

Arsenal should sign Andre

We believe that Brazil international Andre could come as the best option for Arsenal. The 22-year-old has been widely linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, all while being dubbed the "best midfielder" in his country right now (Fernando Campos).

morten-frendrup-andre-liverpool-opinion

As journalist Dean Jones pointed out this week in an interview for GiveMeSport, Liverpool are stalling on paying a fee for Andre, and the player himself is keen on a move to England. Indeed, this could hand Arsenal a "great" opportunity to sign Andre. Another temptation could be that the player's contract includes a pretty affordable £34 million release clause.

"Andre is an interesting one here because there definitely has been attention dedicated to his situation and if he is going to make a move, it makes sense that it will be in January because of the way the calendar works in Brazilian football." said Jones to GMS.

"The player is keen to move to England and at a time when Liverpool are wavering over his valuation, this could be a great moment to strike as the other main competition will be Fulham. Fluminense are willing to sell and given the player’s profile and expectations and growth potential, I think he would be a decent fit for what Arteta is building towards."

Liverpool: Klopp could land instant Endo upgrade with swoop for 5 ft 10 ace

Liverpool have enjoyed a strong start to the 2023/24 campaign as they currently sit within the top four of the Premier League with 20 points in nine matches.

Jurgen Klopp's side have only lost one top-flight game this season and they will be hoping to secure a return to Champions League football after qualifying for the Europa League last term.

Despite their impressive form so far, the Reds could look to the January transfer window to give themselves a boost for the second half of the campaign.

It was recently reported that Liverpool, alongside Benfica, have an interest in Boca Juniors defensive midfielder Ezequiel Fernandez, and Klopp could land an instant Wataru Endo upgrade in a swoop for the 21-year-old ace.

How has Endo performed this season?

The Reds snapped the Japan international up from Stuttgart for a reported fee of £16.2m during the summer transfer window but he has endured a difficult start to the season.

An unused substitute during the recent 2-0 win over Everton, Endo has only featured in five Premier League matches so far this term and has not made much of an impact at either end of the pitch.

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo.

He has not created a single chance for his teammates and has averaged 0.8 tackles and interceptions combined alongside a duel success rate of 41%, as per Sofascore.

Endo has also struggled in his two Europa League starts for Liverpool with zero key passes and zero interceptions, along with two tackles, in the clashes with LASK and USG.

These statistics show that the former Bundesliga man is not making regular defensive interventions to help his team out at the back, whilst he is also offering no creativity in possession to benefit the team in attack.

Should Liverpool sign Ezequiel Fernandez?

Klopp should swoop to sign the 5 foot 10 defensive midfielder as his performances for Boca Juniors this year suggest that he has the potential to be an instant upgrade on the ex-Stuttgart ace in January.

The left-footed battler, who was once dubbed an "orchestrator" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, could offer more quality as a ball-winner in comparison to the 30-year-old Reds dud.

Fernandez has made eight appearances in the Copa de la Liga this year and caught the eye with 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game, along with a pass completion rate of 90%.

The young gem has also averaged 2.7 tackles and interceptions per match and won 61% of his duels across 19 Liga Profesional de Futbol outings throughout 2023.

These statistics show that the 21-year-old talent, who also created three 'big chances' for his teammates in those 19 games, is a ball-winning midfielder who can disrupt the opposition to win possession back for his side.

Therefore, he could come in as a big upgrade on Endo, who has not showcased defensive or offensive skills during his short time with Liverpool, if the youngster can adapt to English football.

This is due to his superior quality off the ball and the nine years that he has in hand to develop and improve over the Japanese dud in the years to come.

However, it does remain to be seen how much Boca Juniors would demand for his services and how much the Reds would be willing to pay for him.

'Schutt is setting benchmark for bowlers around the world' – Australia coach

Australia women coach Matthew Mott says the opening bowler has learned to vary her pace skilfully, and the results showed when she had excellent returns in India earlier this year

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jul-2018Opening bowler Megan Schutt is setting the benchmark for bowlers around the world in limited-overs cricket, and that has reflected in the rankings, feels Australia coach Matthew Mott.Schutt is the No. 1 bowler in the ICC rankings for women’s T20Is, on 669 points and well clear of the second-placed Poonam Yadav of India, who has 611 points. In ODIs, Schutt’s compatriot Jess Jonassen is No. 1 with 676 points, and Schutt is not far behind on second spot with 667.”I think she’s almost the benchmark for bowlers around the world and that shows in the world rankings,” Mott told . “She was challenged a lot by the way the batters have come at her over the last year or so and she’s been prepared to take a step back, analyse the game and work out some options.”Mott said Schutt had learned to master changes of pace, and with all teams building up to the Women’s World T20 in the Caribbean in November, he threw down a challenge to the opponents.”[Her options include] taking the pace off the ball earlier, being more bold and aggressive with those changes of pace, and you can see the dividends paid off in India,” Mott said. “Teams are aware of her and it will be interesting to see if they come harder at her now, or look to see her off.”At the start of the year, in three ODIs that were part of the ICC Women’s Championship, Schutt had an economy rate of 3.87 in India – the best in the series while bowling 29.4 overs and taking four wickets. In the T20I tri-series that followed and also involved England, Schutt topped the wickets and economy rate charts, taking nine wickets in five matches and conceding runs at only 6.28 per over.Australia will play New Zealand in three T20Is in September and October before the World T20, and Mott said the entire bowling group had learned to stay ahead of the batsmen, and would be using the time at home to hone their skills further.”We improved last series in terms of when teams were coming hard at us, that we were able to just absorb that pressure a bit,” Mott said. “One thing you can’t have is to just let it all go. We know batters are going to hit boundaries and they’ve got power and there’s only four fielders out, so it’s difficult.”You can’t hedge your bets as a bowling group, but there are certainly ways you can try and get ahead of the batter and get them guessing a bit more. I don’t want to give too many secrets away but that’s certainly something our bowling group has researched quite diligently and we’re looking forward to practicing here before taking it overseas.”

Adams' gritty ton builds on Steyn's landmark

ScorecardJimmy Adams battled to his first Specsavers County Championship century for almost a year as Hampshire fought back into a strong position against Yorkshire.Veteran left handed opener Adams was forced to rebuild after quick wickets with a gritty and sensible ton.His runs backed up Dale Steyn’s first five wicket haul since August 2016 as Yorkshire were bowled out for 350 – their highest total of the season.Adams, who is considering retiring at the end of the season, hadn’t reached three figures in the Championship since a 144 against Surrey last July – but never looked in danger against the pink ball.Opening partner Joe Weatherley fell in just the fourth over when he was lbw to Jack Brooks – a delivery which nipped back late and would have gone on to hit the right hander’s off-stump.James Vince had destroyed Yorkshire’s bowling in an outrageous 171 earlier in the week in his side’s Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final victory. But despite a glimpse at his exceptional shot making, in a 54-run stand with Adams, the Hampshire captain was castled by a Brooks with the fourth ball after the tea interval. An over later Sam Northeast, on his first Championship innings since fracturing a finger in his hand, stroked a delicious straight drive down the ground, before he had his middle stump uprooted by Steven Patterson. That brought Alsop to the crease and saw a rear-guard and hard-working stand with Adams.Adams reached fifty in 96 balls, moved to with a forceful cut, as he was quick to punish anything off line.Meanwhile, Alsop was taking his chance having been handed the wicket-keeping gloves from Lewis McManus for this match by starting a marathon – which saw his pass 50 in a glacial 151 deliveries.Adams then reach three figures with another cut backward of square from his 182nd ball.He ended the day unbeaten on 132, with Alsop on 62, having shared a 177 for the unbroken fourth wicket.Earlier, Hampshire wrapped up the Yorkshire tail – although the visitors managed to grab a fourth bonus point for the first time this season. The hosts had looked set to wrap things up quickly as Tim Bresnan and Brooks both fell within the first three overs of the day.Bresnan was bowled by a Fidel Edwards yorker, before Brooks followed him back when he edged Steyn to Ollie Rayner at second slip. The Brooks scalp handed Steyn a deserved five wicket haul, as his fitness ahead of South Africa’s Test series with Sri Lanka next month continued to move in the right decision. The fast bowler ended with figures of 5 for 66 from his epic 29 overs – his first five-for since the Centurion Test against New Zealand nearly two years ago.Captain Patterson guided his side to an additional bonus point, taking them to four with the bat, with 37 runs, before Kyle Abbott celebrated his first wicket since early May when he had Patterson caught scooping to mid-off.

Spurs have struck on "frightening" star who's worth way more than Mbeumo

It’s all going on at Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The North Londoners moved quickly to fire Ange Postecoglou earlier this month and then, in a relatively quick fashion, appointed Thomas Frank to lead the club into the next season.

However, that’s only the start of the business the North Londoners will be doing this season, as recent weeks have seen them linked to a plethora of talented players, from Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo to RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

Yet, perhaps the most interesting and exciting link has been to Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, even though his valuation is currently lower than that of a current Spurs star.

Why Spurs want Mbeumo

As things stand, it would appear as if Spurs and Manchester United are the two teams most interested in signing Mbeumo this summer, and while the fee required to do so is still in the air, Football Transfers has valued the Cameroon international at around €58m, which comes out to £49m.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Now, that is still a lot of money, but it would be hard to make a genuine argument against him being worth that and more.

For example, in 42 appearances for the Bees this season, totalling 3577 minutes, the former Troyes gem scored 20 goals and provided nine assists.

That means the 25-year-old phenomenon managed to maintain an average of a goal involvement every 1.44 games, or every 123.34 minutes, which is undeniably sensational and the sort of output that would seriously help the North Londoners next year.

Furthermore, the Avallon-born monster is reasonably versatile, as while his primary and best position is off the right, he has spent a not-insignificant period playing up top and as a second striker during his time in the capital.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoin action with Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel Magalhaes

Finally, while there might be cheaper and more exciting options elsewhere in Europe, the 22-capped international is Premier League-proven and, therefore, should easily slot into the Tottenham squad next season.

However, he will have to hit the ground running to see his valuation surpass one of his potential new teammates.

The Spurs star worth more than Mbeumo

So, even though Spurs endured a diabolically poor domestic campaign this season, the club is still blessed with an abundance of talented players, like James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Micky Van de Ven.

However, in this context, the player in question is fellow right-winger Brennan Johnson, who, according to Football Transfers, is currently worth €66.5m, which converts to about £57m, or £8m more than Mbeumo’s valuation.

Now, that might sound like a lot to some of you, but the Welshman actually enjoyed a pretty impressive season with the North Londoners this year.

For example, he ended the campaign as the club’s top scorer, with 18 goals and seven assists in 51 appearances, totalling 3316 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.04 games, or every 132.64 minutes, which isn’t much worse than the Brentford star.

Moreover, he scored arguably the most important Tottenham goal in a generation in the Europa League Final last month.

On top of that, he stacks up reasonably well against the Cameroonian superstar when we take a look at their underlying numbers from this season.

For example, the 25-year-old comes out ahead in some metrics, such as progressive passes and carries, shots on target and shot and goal-creating actions per 90.

Ultimately, Mbeumo might be the more exciting player at the moment, but Johnson fully deserves the valuation he has, and should the North Londoners get their hands on the Brentford star, there could be a fierce battle for that right-wing position next season.

Hales to replace Warner for Sunrisers

Notts Outlaws batsman Alex Hales has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad as a replacement for David Warner. The former Australian vice-captain was set to captain the franchise, but resigned and was then banned by the BCCI from playing in the tournament for his part in the ball-tampering scandal that emerged in South Africa this week.Sunrisers’ move for Hales means that his gamble to become a white-ball specialist despite missing out in the IPL auction has paid off – stressing his availability in the event of any replacements being needed. He was bought for his base price of INR 1 crore (USD 154,000) from the available player pool list.Hales’ failure to win a spot in the initial auction caused some surprise in England. He remains the only England player till date to score a T20I century and is also the only England batsman to feature in the top-10 list of the ICC T20I rankings.Hales, 28, had recently signed a two-year deal to play only white ball cricket for Notts Outlaws, but as is common these days, it included a clause stating his right to sign an IPL deal if offered one.Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said: “Although Alex missed out in the IPL auction, we knew there was a chance he could be signed up as a replacement, given his excellent record in the T20 Blast last summer and with England.””Clearly, we would have loved Alex to be around for the whole of our own 50-over campaign, but we still go into that competition with a very strong squad and his absence for a period opens up opportunities for others.”Hales will miss two Royal London One-Day Cup matches, and maybe more if Sunrisers reach the playoff stage in late May. Hales will miss the fixtures against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford and against Northamptonshire at Welbeck. He will leave for India as soon as possible. The IPL begins on April 7, while Sunrisers’ first match is on April 9 against Rajasthan Royals.Sunrisers will now be captained by New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, another consequence of the ball-tampering fallout.Hales said: “I’m excited to be given this opportunity. While it’s disappointing to miss matches for Outlaws, when I return to England I will be match-hardened and ready to give my all to their cause.”
