Transfer news: Everton closely watching "top-class" £35m player for Dyche

Everton are keeping close tabs on a new centre-back as they weigh up a move, but they aren’t the only club who are hoping to bring him to the Premier League in January.

Everton transfer updates

Sean Dyche currently has James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, Jarrad Branthwaite and Ben Godfrey as his four natural options at the heart of the defensive backline, but with the former pair both being 30 years of age, the boss will soon need to enter the market to find long-term replacements.

If the Toffees are able to successfully complete their takeover, which would see the 777 Partners Group at the helm, the manager is likely to receive better financial backing which means he can be competitive when pursuing transfer targets, and he’s set to need a lot of cash to secure this one in particular.

At the Deutsche Bank Park, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho only arrived from Royal Antwerp this summer, but he's already established himself as Dino Toppmoller’s overall best-performing player with a match rating of 6.98 (WhoScored – Eintracht Frankfurt statistics).

Therefore, Ecuador’s international has brought himself onto the radar of the Goodison Park side, but with two other top-flight clubs also keen, the 22-year-old is expected to be the subject of a transfer tug of war, whether that be at the start of next year or later in the summer.

Willian Pacho to Everton news

According to TEAMtalk, who have shared a transfer update on Willian Pacho, Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham are all monitoring the progress of the defender, who has thrived since his switch to Germany:

A trio of English clubs are tracking Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt to see whether he lives up to the hype as one of the Bundesliga’s next breakout stars. At this early stage of his career in Germany it is understood Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham have an eye on his big breakthrough.

"While Frankfurt will be in no mood to let Pacho leave soon, there is already talk that a player signed for £8million from Royal Antwerp holds a value closer to £35million.”

Ecuador defender Willian Pacho.

How good is Willian Pacho?

According to football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Pacho is a “top-class” defender and he provides an excellent physical presence, which he’s proven by averaging 3.3 clearances and 2.6 aerial wins per league game so far this season (WhoScored – Pacho statistics).

Standing at 6 foot 1, the left-footed colossus also loves to get stuck into challenges and gain back possession, as he’s won ten out of his 19 tackles made since the start of the term which is the joint-highest success rate throughout his squad (FBRef – Eintracht Frankfurt statistics).

Furthermore, Pacho already knows what it takes to compete and be successful at the highest level having secured five trophies across all age ranges since first bursting onto the professional scene (Transfermarkt – Pacho statistics), so he would be able to pass his winning mentality onto the Everton squad.

Rangers: Wilson should have hired ‘fiery’ 4-3-3 manager instead of Beale

Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale has come under pressure after his team were beaten 3-1 by Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

The Light Blues have now lost three of their opening seven league games of the 2023/24 campaign and are already seven points adrift of their rivals at the top of the table.

The Glasgow Times claimed that the head coach has lost the support of the fans at Ibrox and that it may not be long before the Gers opt to part ways if their fortunes do not turn around quickly.

Journalist Graham Spiers also predicted after the defeat that the ex-Aston Villa assistant would be sacked due to the "hapless" football on display from his side this season.

The concerns regarding Beale's future should lead to questions over his initial appointment by former sporting director Ross Wilson in the first place, as the English tactician was brought in to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Who could have replaced van Bronckhorst at Rangers?

The Daily Record named Australian head coach Kevin Muscat as one of the potential options to replace the Dutch boss during the break for the 2022 World Cup last year.

Rangers head coach Michael Beale.

Beale, who eventually took on the job, was another name on the list and Wilson's decision to go with him over the Yokohama F. M. chief turned out to be his final blunder before moving on to Nottingham Forest in April of this year.

Muscat, who was recently linked with a move to Ibrox to replace the ex-Queens Park Rangers manager, could have been a better appointment for the Light Blues due to his track record of success in the dugout.

How many trophies has Kevin Muscat won?

The 50-year-old coach has won a league title in Japan with Yokohama and in Australia with Melbourne Victory, alongside a Japanese Super Cup trophy, as per Transfermarkt, throughout his career so far.

He has proven himself to be capable of managing a team to titles and trophies, which is something that Beale has yet to prove in his managerial tenures to date.

The current Rangers boss has not won a single piece of silverware in his career as a head coach and there is little evidence to suggest that he will collect one any time soon.

Yokohama F. Marinos manager Kevin Muscat.

Whereas, Muscat, who predominantly deploys a 4-3-3 formation, would have come in to replace van Bronckhorst with the potential to win trophies for the Scottish giants, given his track record as a coach in Japan and Australia.

The "fiery" manager – as he was dubbed by Sydney FC coach Steve Corica – was recently described as an "evolving" manager who plays good football by analyst Petar Petrov.

He was also hailed as "perfect" for the Rangers job by Petrov due to his character and ability to coach an attacking style, which suggests that his Light Blues team would not have been as 'hapless' as Beale's has been.

Therefore, going for the 43-year-old instead of Muscat has turned out to be Wilson's final blunder for the Scottish side. It may now be one that he looks back on with regret when he remembers the end of his tenure at Ibrox.

We aren't machines, you need a bit of luck – Woakes

Chris Woakes was not beating himself up about the last over which got away in Hamilton, realising that the margin between hero and villain can be the matter of a few inches.Double-figures is what Woakes ideally likes to have up his sleeve when he begins a final over, but backed himself with nine in the first ODI – Mark Wood defended seven against South Africa at the Ageas Bowl last year – but what he termed the “crucial” first couple of deliveries went New Zealand’s way to make the result all-but assured. He would not, however, have done anything differently with the first delivery, a yorker at leg stump, which was deflected to fine leg to make it five needed off five. A wide followed, then the final blow from Mitchell Santner over midwicket when Woakes erred in length.”There have been times when you come through it and you bowl that last over and you’re the hero,” Woakes said. “There are other times when it goes against you. Unfortunately, it did.”Woakes, who claimed his 100th wicket when he removed Colin Munro, is becoming a go-to man at the death for Eoin Morgan, which is why it was a surprise that he was not given the chance to bowl is full allocation. In hindsight he should have replaced Adil Rashid the over after Ross Taylor departed, instead Santner clubbed Rashid for two sixes.”You try to put yourself in that mindset where it has gone well before and try and visualise it,” he said. “But we aren’t machines and sometimes you are going to slightly get it wrong. You do need a little bit of luck in those last overs. Had that first ball [of the last over] been dug out for a single or a dot, it completely changes the outlook on the rest of the over. It’s just the way it goes.”Jos Buttler previously spoke about bowlers trying to stay one step ahead of batsmen, in reference to Tim Southee’s use of pace-off against him, and as part of Woakes’ development he is working on his range of slower deliveries and how to disguise them from the batsmen. He cited Southee as an example of a bowler who will double-bluff – hide the ball as if to bowl a slower delivery then send down at full pace – and said that he had picked up a lot of skills from the IPL, working with Lakshmipathy Balaji at Kolkata Knight Riders.”I’ve tried to hide it a little bit for a while,” Woakes said. “It’s something I learned from the IPL, they hid it and from facing guys I always felt the more they hide it the harder it is to see those slower balls or changes of pace. That’s something I’ve slowly worked on over time. I still have a lot to learn but I feel like I have got better.”[Balaji] was very good at hiding the ball and he bowled in the nets off a few paces and you literally couldn’t pick him. Sometimes you’ll hide it and bowl a quicker one and sometimes a slower ball. It’s all mind games.”Woakes’ next IPL stint will take him to Royal Challengers Bangalore, along with team-mate Moeen Ali, after he was bought for more than GDP800,000. He’ll be in a side that includes Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Brendon McCullum”It will be interesting to see how Kohli goes about his business,” Woakes said. “He’s a world-class player, one of the best if not the best in the white-ball game so that will be exciting to see how he goes about it. Obviously, you get a perception of a guy playing against them so to be in the same dressing-room as him, de Villiers – all these guys – it will be great to learn from them.”The learning never stops and if some of Kohli and de Villiers’ batting knowledge can rub off on Woakes, England probably won’t mind.

Neser, Rashid, Siddle help Strikers defend 158

Meticulous and clinical, the Adelaide Strikers turned a precarious position against the Sydney Thunder into a 25-run win to reach the top of the Big Bash League table

The Report by Tim Wigmore07-Jan-2018Adelaide Strikers 7 for 158 (Ingram 48, Carey 34, Fawad 3-31) beat Sydney Thunder 9 for 133 (Nesser 3-29, Siddle 2-13, Rashid 2-21) by 25 runsMeticulous and clinical, the Adelaide Strikers turned a precarious position against the Sydney Thunder into a 25-run win to reach the top of the Big Bash League table.Yet again, the Strikers’ success was underpinned by Rashid Khan, the outstanding player in the tournament so far. In five matches, he has recorded figures of 2-22, 2-22, 2-19, 2-18 and now 2-21, bowling with control and penetration that has allowed the Strikers to triumph when batting first, while their opponents favour chasing. To boot, he even heaved a couple of sixes in the final over of Adelaide’s innings. The margin of the Strikers’ victory defied their struggles for much of the night. Colin Ingram’s six-ridden 48 hauled them to 158 for 7; then, with the Thunder on 42 for no loss after five overs, Peter Siddle delivered a crucial maiden before combining with Rashid to throttle the home team. Even Ben Rohrer’s three late sixes were not enough to give the Thunder real hope of avenging their defeat at the Adelaide Oval before Christmas.Adelaide steady as she goesThe Strikers are unusual in their penchant for batting first when they win the toss – something they have done more than the other seven teams combined this BBL season. It is a reflection of how, with a strong bowling attack that includes Rashid, who is especially proficient in the second innings, they feel comfortable defending totals. Travis Head won the toss, batted first and won against the Sydney Thunder at Adelaide a fortnight ago, and aimed to do the same on Sunday evening. Perhaps the scorching heat in Sydney – it was the hottest day in the city for 80 years – played a role too, making it attractive for the Strikers to field when it was cooler later in the night. The Strikers began their innings smoothly enough, just a little slowly: after eight overs, they had only lost one wicket, yet had a run rate of under seven.Getty ImagesFawad pulls them backLegspinners have been the most successful type of bowlers in this season of the Big Bash. And for all the attention on the overseas stars – Rashid, Shadab Khan and Yasir Shah – Fawad Ahmed has been almost as effective. In the ninth over of the Strikers innings, he changed the complexion of the game by snaring both set batsmen. First, Travis Head spliced a shot to long-on. Then, after striking a couple of slog-swept boundaries – the second was caught on the long-on boundary, but Kurtis Patterson was touching the rope while initially taking the catch – Alex Carey was flummoxed by a googly and clean bowled. Fawad cleaned up Jonathan Wells with a delivery that went straight on in his final over, to end with 3 for 31 and take his BBL season haul to eight wickets at 18.50 apiece, to go with an economy rate of 6.16. In all, the Thunder delivered 12 overs of spin, with Chris Green taking 1 for 22 from his allocation.ESPNcricinfo LtdIngram’s late dashAt 4 for 104 with one ball of the 16th over left, the Strikers weren’t going anywhere quickly. Then, Colin Ingram did as overseas batsmen are supposed to do. With beautiful timing, he creamed three sixes – a heave over long-on from Arjun Nair, a crisp strike over long-off off Green, and a pull over square leg off Gurinder Sandhu – to haul Adelaide into a position from which they could amass a working total. As Ingram walked off, slashing a full and wide delivery from Sandhu to the keeper, the suspicion remained that the total would not be quite enough. But Rashid harrumphed two sixes in the final three balls of the Strikers innings to shore them up to 7 for 158; 54 of those runs having come off the final 25 balls.Thunder’s flying startAt 32 without loss in four overs, the Thunder appeared to be cruising towards their target. Head entrusted Rashid to bowl the fifth over, but Patterson scythed two fours through the covers to leave the home team requiring only 117 from 15 overs with ten wickets still in hand. It should have been a cruise. The squeezeThe Strikers’ comeback began with that rarest of T20 commodities: the maiden. Siddle produced six deliveries of subtle variation and immaculate precision to Jos Buttler. In the following over, Rashid’s googly had Buttler clean bowled, and suddenly the Thunder were stifled. In four overs together, Siddle and Rashid conceded only 13 runs – the prelude to a stretch of 42 balls without a boundary. In the process, as if sleepwalking, the Thunder’s position of overwhelming domination first became uncertain, and then increasingly precarious. Both Patterson and Shane Watson scored at a strike-rate of well under 100.The endgameBy the time Watson was out, heaving a catch to long-on, the Thunder needed 84 from only 41 balls, though they still had seven wickets in hand. Yet, once again, Rashid proved far too good – and even caught Green at long-on to effectively seal the Strikers’ victory. Rohrer struck some admirable blows late, but it always seemed futile.

Crystal Palace Scouts Watch "Excellent" £1.9k-p/w Forward

Crystal Palace have sent scouts to watch Bristol City forward Sam Bell live in action and a new report has indicated whether he’s likely to be on the move this summer having attracted interest from five potential suitors.

Who is Sam Bell?

Bell is primarily a left-winger who has graduated from the academy to become a regular feature of the first team at Ashton Gate having made a total of 42 senior appearances to date, but there’s a chance that he could be on the move before the end of the ongoing window having begun to make a real name for himself.

The Robins’ youth product still has another two years to run on his contract with Nigel Pearson’s side, but having continued his impressive form from last season into the new second-tier campaign by ranking as their top-performing player during last weekend’s opening game of the term, he’s caught the eye of Roy Hodgson in SE25.

The Eagles will be in the market to find a suitable replacement for Wilfried Zaha, who of course left the club to join Galatasaray last month, and despite not having any experience in the Premier League which is usually a factor that would come into consideration, the 21-year-old appears to have been identified as an ideal candidate.

Are Crystal Palace signing Sam Bell?

According to TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace, Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers all had club chiefs “present” at Bristol’s 1-1 draw against Preston on Saturday to assess Bell's performance.

Scottish Premiership giants Glasgow Rangers are also “admirers” of the youngster and could hold an advantage over the other potential suitors with Champions League football on offer at Ibrox, and similarly the Seagulls have qualified for the Europa League.

However, whilst City are “aware of the widespread interest”, they are “likely to move” quickly to get their prized asset to sign a new deal in a bid to fend off any attention, which will include a significant pay rise.

Bristol City forward Sam Bell.

How many goals has Sam Bell scored?

Since the start of his career, Bell has clocked up ten goal contributions (seven goals and three assists) in 42 senior appearances, including when he found the back of the net vs Preston last weekend, so should he put pen to paper, the attacker would be a hugely exciting signing for the long-term future of Crystal Palace.

The SMI Sports Management client – who represent some of the Championship's top stars – pockets £1.9k-per-week at the moment, and started the new season strongly aside from his goal having managed two shots and dribbles apiece in the recent fixture on home turf against the Lilywhites, so poses a real threat in the final third.

Bell, who has been dubbed an “excellent” player by journalist Josh Bunting, is also a versatile operator having previously been deployed in six various positions over the pitch, including everywhere across the frontline, two roles in the midfield and even at right-back, so he would be able to easily adapt to the manager’s needs should he ever want to switch up his team selection.

'Hardik has turned his career around' – Dravid

The India A coach, who worked with the allrounder during a tour of Australia last year, says Hardik Pandya is now capable of tailoring his game to different situations, and is on his way to becoming an ‘all-weather player’

Shashank Kishore in Vijayawada25-Sep-2017

Associated Press

Hardik Pandya has “turned his career around” by playing situations smartly, according to India A coach Rahul Dravid. It’s a template he hopes players from the current India A set-up emulate.Last year, Dravid was Pandya’s coach on an India A tour of Australia, where the allrounder first showed signs of being able to temper his naturally free-stroking approach when the situation demanded it. Since then, Pandya has continued to demonstrate this adaptability, most recently in the ongoing ODI series against Australia, where he has scored two match-winning half-centuries of varying moods. In the first ODI, he revived a floundering innings with MS Dhoni before launching into Australia’s spinners to make a match-turning 83. In Indore on Sunday, he was sent up to No. 4 after the openers put on a century stand in a chase of 294. Pandya sustained the tempo while scoring 78, and fell with India only 10 short of their target.”A good example about Hardik from my perspective is, he’s willing to play situations and not just the natural game we often speak about. Credit goes completely to him. He’s the one who has actually turned his career around.” Dravid said on Monday, on the sidelines of India A’s unofficial Test against New Zealand A in Vijayawada. “It’s not about playing just the one way you want to play.”If he bats at four, he bats in a particular way. If he bats at six, he bats in a particular way. Tomorrow, he may bat at 80 for 4, like he did in the first ODI with Dhoni. That shows maturity and that’s what you want to see. This concept of ‘play your natural game’, which I hear all the time, frustrates me because there’s no such thing in my belief as ‘natural game.'”It’s only about how you play different situations. Are you good enough to play when the score is 30 for 3, or 250 for 3? Are you good enough to bat when you go in first over or are you good enough to go in first ball after lunch? You have to learn to bat differently in different conditions, and if you can do that like Hardik is showing at the moment, those would be signs of a developing cricketer, someone who can make consistent contributions and not someone who is a one-off, who can produce brilliance once in a while. The aspiration and challenges set for a lot of India A players is to be all-weather players, all-situation players, all-condition players.”Pandya’s coming of age is an example of how exposure to the India Under-19 and India A teams, which Dravid has coached for over two years now, has helped players to make a smooth transition when called up to the senior team.Rishabh Pant is another player who has come through this pathway. The 19-year old who made his international debut earlier this year against England after graduating from the Under-19s in 2016, comes with the reputation of being a big hitter. However, his over-aggression has cut short a few of his promising innings.Getty Images

The first unofficial Test against New Zealand A was one such example. Pant, who had already hit nine fours and two sixes in his 67, seemed to be on course to make a hundred. Fields were spread out, runs were available if he just pushed the ball into the gaps, with the bowlers looking to get him off strike and target the lower order. But he fell trying to hit out.Dravid, who has worked with Pant for over two years now, said it was important to recognise the ability of certain players and allow them a learning environment that makes them comfortable while still holding them accountable.”I think it’s a balance,” Dravid said. “It’s recognition of the fact that someone like Rishabh will always be an attacking player. You don’t want to take away his attacking instincts, but you want to inculcate a certain sense of smartness to be able to read situations and recognise situations where the time is hot for you to make it count.”I think [in the first four-day game] he got stuck with the tailenders. Again, it is part of his learning experiences and that is the conversation I’ve had with him. When you’re young, you think you have to hit every ball when a tailender is around you. It takes time and experience to learn [to bat] with the tail. That’s what he is learning. It’s not going to happen overnight.”Experiences like these are good for him even if it doesn’t come off. If he goes back and thinks, ‘were there any other options I could have used rather than the ones I took, that may have helped me play better?’ he’s an improved player. These are the chats we have. He’s a talented kid and good at what he does; he has exceptional skill and exceptional ability. He’ll learn with more opportunities, and more games. That’s what these matches are about. I’m not too stressed about results. For me, it’s about if they’re learning from different situations.”While looking to get players to feature regularly in A tours, Dravid also said it was important to not undervalue the Ranji Trophy. “The board has been open to scheduling series but it’s difficult to balance out, especially the A tours become difficult because we do understand the stress players face with the amount of cricket played,” he said. “They’re required to play for their state associations, which we are conscious of. The last thing we want to do is pull them out of Ranji Trophy matches to play A series. I believe Ranji Trophy should be given as much importance, playing for states should be important.”

Villa: Emery could sign 22 y/o "next big thing" this summer

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Egyptian winger Ibrahim Adel, as Unai Emery eyes reinforcements this summer.

The Spaniard is off to a strong start in the transfer window, with partner Monchi overseeing his first signing by bringing Pau Torres into the set-up from Villarreal.

With Youri Tielemans also on board, Emery could equip his side further with signing Adel, who is a name on the target list of a host of clubs.

Could Aston Villa sign Ibrahim Adel?

As reported by 90min earlier this week, the Egyptian forward has captured the eyes of a list of Premier League clubs, including the Midlands outfit.

The report claims that the Villans have ‘expressed an interest’ in the 22-year-old, who currently represents Pyramids FC in his home country.

Chelsea and Newcastle are named among the list of admirers from the Premier League, with the hype surrounding the winger coming from his performances at the recent U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

How good is Ibrahim Adel?

Winning second prize is never easy, however, gaining a silver medal and the U23 AFCON Player of the Tournament prize makes missing out just a little sweeter.

As the captain of Egypt’s U23s, Adel was named as the best player for his ‘dominance and playmaking skills’, as per the tournament’s official site.

Having also gained four caps for the senior Egyptian side, the 22-year-old gem has been recognised as an upcoming talent, with the expectation that he will graduate from his homeland to seek a new journey in Europe.

Once hailed as being the “next big thing” and the “future of Egyptian football” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, there is little surprise that Villa are reported to be interested in the winger this summer.

Ammar Hamdy of Egypt celebrates scoring their second goal with Ibrahim Adel of Egypt

Emery stated back in January that he wished to sign a ‘specialist winger’, which is something he could achieve by signing Adel, who is extremely versatile in playing along the front line.

Deployable as a striker or on either flank, the right-footed sensation is best utilised on the right side where he can fully exploit his strengths in front of goal.

It’s a good time for the Villans to seek interest in a winger, with journalist Tom Collomosse revealing in his Daily Mail column this week that Leon Bailey is for sale this summer.

Scoring just five times in 51 Premier League appearances, the £25m deal for the Jamaican was a mundane one for a player that was expected to lift off in the league on the back of impressive form in the Bundesliga.

The 25-year-old’s reportedly expected departure could leave room for Villa to swoop for Adel, who could prove to be a better option for Emery’s side than the former Bayer Leverkusen man.

Across 77 Egyptian Premier League appearances, the 22-year-old wizard has netted 21 goals, as well as registering seven assists in an imposing rise to fame in the beginning of his career, via Transfermarkt.

In terms of action in the final third, the youngster has highlighted more of a threat than Bailey over the past few years, and with a youthful spirit and a desire to breakthrough in Europe on his side, could explore further highs to his game.

Emery must act fast to win the race to sign the Egyptian, who with many interested parties coming forward, will be one to watch this summer.
