Bangladesh begin virtual knockouts at spin-friendly Southampton

Bangladesh cannot afford anymore slip-ups and the first obstacle in their way is an Afghanistan team still looking for their first win

Hussey: Wickets in the middle the key for both teams

Big PictureIf you wanted an idea of how much the nature of a pitch influences the cricket played on it, contrast Afghanistan’s last two matches. Against England – not even the best players of spin – their star legspinner Rashid Khan was given a tutorial on what life is like for the less gifted on most days. The spin trio of Rashid, Mujeeb ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi collectively conceded a seemingly confidence shattering 224 in 28 overs in that match.Fast forward to Southampton and it must have felt like waking up to a beautiful morning from a terrible nightmare. On the slower, drier pitch there, not entirely different from the Hyderabad surface they play on in the IPL, they were a beast that couldn’t be tamed by one of the strongest batting line-ups in the world. For all the external factors that a disappointing campaign can be attributed to, it is really out in the middle, on unfavourable surfaces that their fate has most often been sealed. But having come within touching distance of tasting victory against India, Afghanistan will be thrilled to remain in Southampton, hoping to cause what would be on current form, an upset against Bangladesh.Ironically, Bangladesh themselves were a conditions-dependent team for the longest time, but despite their lack of experience in the UK, they have shown to have acquired the kind of adaptability you need to not just compete in multi-team tournaments played on varied surfaces but also be legitimate contenders. A washout against Sri Lanka, a team they would have fancied their chances against, has left them in a position where even winning all three remaining games may not be enough to make the top four, but it is the minimum requirement. Each match from here is a virtual knockout, the kind of pressure situation that has made former champions like Pakistan (1992) and Australia (1999). It’s the kind of situation which could transform Bangladesh from a competitive unit to one that is feared by oppositions.Form guideBangladesh LWLLW (completed matches, most recent first)
Afghanistan LLLLLIn the spotlightBangladesh’s problem has been taking wickets. They have averaged 49 with the ball, the most for any team in the World Cup so far. A major reason for that has been the impenetrability of offspinner Mehidy Hasan, particularly in the first 30 overs. In that period of the match, when the narrative takes shape, he averages 165, with one wicket in 32 overs. It must be noted that none of these – with the exception of The Oval against New Zealand which was slow – matches could said to have been played on spin-friendly surfaces, like the one he’s likely to have in Southampton. However, he was struck on the side of the head by a ball during a net session on the eve of the match, and though he is understood to be out of danger, his participation in the Afghanistan clash is in doubt.Rashid Khan came back strongly after the hammering at Old Trafford to restrict India’s scoring in the middle in Southampton, before picking MS Dhoni, his only wicket, in the death. However, he has been afflicted with a similar malady as Mehidy, having struggled in his first spell throughout the World Cup. In the 20 overs that have constituted his first spell across five matches, he has gone at over six runs per over, without taking a single wicket. Against proficient players of spin, he will be tested again but on a helpful surface, Afghanistan will want more from their premier spinner.Team newsA blow to the side of the head has put Mehidy Hasan’s participation in doubt. That would be a big blow to Bangladesh on a spin-friendly surface. Mohammad Saifuddin, Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in the tournament, sat out the last match against Australia due to a back injury he hasn’t fully recovered from. Rubel Hossain, who replaced him, went for 83 in nine wicket-less overs. Bangladesh may be tempted to persist with him for his pace, particularly against Afghanistan, but also because Abu Jayed, the other option, largely relies on moving the new ball, something that hasn’t been on offer in Southampton. Mosaddek Hossain, however, could be back after sufficiently recovering from a left shoulder injury. He might replace Sabbir Rahman or Mehidy, depending on the latter’s availability.Bangladesh (Probable XI): Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Liton Das, Mahmudullah, Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz/Mosaddek Hossain, Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur RahmanAfghanistan may persist with the same side after it gave India a run for their money.Afghanistan (Probable XI): Hazratullah Zazai, Gulbadin Naib*, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Ikram Alikhil (wk), Rashid Khan, Aftab Alam, Mujeeb Ur RahmanPitch and conditionsSpin has played a significant role in Southampton, although some of the quicks have used the two-paced nature of the pitch to their advantage as well. While chasing is the preferred option in ODIs, this is a venue where runs on the board can be golden. However, the chance of rain could throw all of that out of the window.Strategy Punt Of all teams, Afghanistan have been the most vulnerable against short-of-a-length or short deliveries. They have lost 21 wickets to those lengths, averaging a shade over 15. Someone like Rubel Hossain could exploit that weakness.Mohammad Nabi, who took Afghanistan to the brink of a massive upset against India, has been excellent against spin but not so much against pace. Four of his five dismissals in the World Cup have come against pace and his strike also dips from 100 against spin to 62 against pace. It’s a no brainer for Bangladesh to attack him with pace.Stats and triviaGulbadin Naib needs 43 runs for 1000 runs in ODIsMashrafe Mortaza needs 2 wickets for 100 wickets as a captain in ODIs.Shakib Al Hasan needs 35 runs for 1000 runs in World CupsQuotes”

Newcastle could unlock Bruno by signing ‘lifelong Sunderland fan’

Things haven’t quite gone to plan for Newcastle United this season. The FA Cup is now the only realistic chance the club have of picking up some silverware.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are 11 points adrift of the top four in the Premier League and have fixtures against Manchester City and Aston Villa up next.

The Geordie outfit look to be lacking experience and leadership on the pitch this campaign, someone who can keep a cool head amid scathing injury problems and defensive woes, but head coach Eddie Howe is reportedly looking to fix this issue before the January transfer window closes.

Newcastle United transfer news – Jordan Henderson

According to a report from the Daily Mail, former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is keen to return to the Premier League just six months after moving to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia for a reported £12m, with the outlet claiming that Newcastle are one of the clubs in the market for a central midfielder.

This would be a controversial transfer as Henderson is a former Sunderland star, having made 79 appearances for the Black Cats across three years in the first-team at the Stadium of Light.

However, it could be a welcomed signing for the man who captained Liverpool throughout the club’s most successful spell since the 1980s and was even described as a “real leader” by journalist Josh Bunting due to his displays at Anfield.

Newcastle have been in the market for a midfielder, with reports linking the Magpies to Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, but Henderson would offer a cheaper alternative to the Blues' academy product as his market value currently sits at £6.4m, as per Transfermarkt.

Newcastle must sign £50m Longstaff upgrade who would be Howe's dream

This £50m “leader” would be Eddie Howe’s dream signing at Newcastle United.

ByAdam Scully Dec 22, 2023 Jordan Henderson stats comparison vs Sean Longstaff

During his most successful period with Liverpool, Henderson was used as a right central midfielder under Jurgen Klopp, with Fabinho operating as the lone pivot, protecting the backline. The experienced Englishman played 241 times as a central midfielder in 492 appearances for the Reds throughout his 12-year spell at the club.

At. St. James' Park, Sean Longstaff currently occupies this position in Howe's 4-3-3 formation. However, the boyhood Newcastle fan has struggled to have much end product in this role.

Longstaff has recorded three goals and two assists in 25 matches for the Magpies this term. His creative output is certainly the most worrying aspect of his performances this season. In fact, across all 161 appearances with Newcastle, Longstaff has registered just 11 assists which is an average of one assist every 14.6 matches.

Henderson would instantly help bolster Newcastle's creativity in this respect, based on his stats from his final campaign in English football in comparison to Longstaff this season.

Nevertheless, signing Henderson also offers Howe the chance to push Bruno Guimaraes further forward, allowing the Brazilian to fulfil his creative instincts, something he hasn't been able to do ever since Sandro Tonali picked up a lengthy suspension earlier in the season.

The 33-year-old has played 162 times as a defensive midfielder. Perhaps now, given Henderson may not have the legs to play as an advanced midfielder anymore, Howe could push Bruno further forward and let him forge opportunities in the final third. In 62 matches as a central midfielder, the Brazil international has bagged 11 goal contributions, one every 5.6 matches on average which is far better than Longstaff's record.

Guimaraes is certainly capable of featuring as a deep-lying playmaker but the addition of Henderson could get him more involved in the final third while taking an underperforming Longstaff out of the side in the meantime.

Spurs could sign "dominant" £26m Romero clone instead of Branthwaite

Tottenham Hotspur supporters were offered a glimpse of silver-laden success in the future after making a resounding start to the 2023/24 campaign under Ange Postecoglou's leadership.

With the football flowing and the strikers striking on Sunday afternoon, dispatching a weather-beaten Newcastle United side that are feeling the wrath of increased competition that comes with European qualification, Spurs emerged 4-1 victors to rekindle their fight for a return to the Champions League.

But this result came off the back of a dismal run of form that saw an unbeaten Premier League start ended by a five-match winless run, changing the mood down at N17 rather quickly.

There's no disputing that injuries and suspensions have been central to the recent struggles, but this only heightens the need for January reinforcements, with Postecoglou understood to have identified his dream defensive addition.

Tottenham transfer news – Radu Dragusin

According to a recent report from Football Transfers, Spurs have earmarked Genoa defender Radu Dragusin and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite as the top targets to strengthen the backline ahead of the January transfer window.

While signing Branthwaite is more than just an attractive proposition, Everton are battling against relegation in the Premier League after a ten-point deduction and with the 21-year-old among the best performers, the club have slapped a £75m price tag on his signature.

Dragusin has been touted at €30m (£26m) by his Serie A outfit, who are not prepared to enter negotiations if such a figure is not met; far cheaper than Branthwaite, this is by far the more plausible route for the Lilywhites whose scouts have been left impressed after watching him in action.

Postecoglou recently stated – via football.london – that his preference is to sign players that can be moulded and nurtured over the coming years, meaning the Romanian titan, aged 21, looks the perfect option.

Radu Dragusin's style of play

Dragusin is well regarded for his tough-tackling presence and imposing physicality, capable of asserting himself in the rearguard and providing a rock-solid base from which Guglielmo Vicario's goal would benefit greatly.

Having amassed 58 appearances for Genoa, scoring five goals, after signing from Juventus in 2022 on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, which was activated in the summer.

This season, he has played every minute of Genoa's Serie A campaign and has impressed for his side, seeking to establish itself as a player in the Italian top-flight once again after returning from the second tier earlier in 2023.

As per Sofascore, Dragusin has completed 83% of his passes this season, averaging 0.5 key passes, 3.3 ball recoveries and 4.5 clearances per game and finding success in 69% of his duels.

Noted for his "dominant" defending by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 12-cap Romania international also ranks among the top 21% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 14% for assists and the top 15% for aerial wins per 90, as per FBref.

Such variegated attributes underscore the modern skill set that doesn't fall upon any one segment of the defensive game, instead, Dragusin offers a range of qualities tailor-made for the fluid system of an ambitious outfit such as Spurs.

But, with the 6 foot 3 star's ferocity being his standout trait, it's clear that Postecoglou views Dragusin as the perfect understudy to Cristian Romero, who is probably Spurs' best centre-half despite the exploits of Micky van de Ven following his £43m transfer form Wolfsburg in August.

Romero is brilliant. He's tenacious, tough and commanding in the heart of the backline, having been described as the "best defender in the world right now" by legendary Argentina teammate Lionel Messi, who knows a thing or two about gauging the level of defenders.

That being said, it's not unjust to say that the 24-year-old has something of a rash streak, with pundit Chris Sutton criticising the "reckless" nature of some of his challenges.

It is this precipitous nature that resulted in his dismissal during the Lilywhites' detrimental 4-1 home defeat against Chelsea at the end of November, starting the recently snapped winless run.

Scoring against West Ham United on his return last week before stirring controversy with a lunging stamp on Callum Wilson at the weekend, Postecoglou must feel that his prized defensive asset's mercurial moments require sturdy support.

This comes in the form of Dragusin, who could emulate Romero's style and serve as the perfect counterweight to the left-sided Van de Ven.

How Radu Dragusin could slot in at Tottenham

With Van de Ven sidelined until after the new year and Romero missing three recent Premier League matches due to suspension, the Lilywhites' 58-year-old boss opted to field Emerson Royal and Ben Davies as a central defensive partnership for two fixtures.

Such an axis, coming at Postecoglou's behest, materialised at the expense of Eric Dier, who is a centre-back and performed 42 times in the role last term, but having not featured since the late capitulation against Wolverhampton Wanderers, his time appears to be up.

Out of contract at the end of the campaign and unfavoured by the new manager, Dier will be searching for pastures new in a matter of months and Dragusin could be signed as the perfect replacement, with Davies – to his credit – proving his worth as a back-up option over the past several weeks.

Eric Dier for Tottenham

Waxing lyrical over the Romania native's abilities in the past, his former manager Andrea Pirlo said: "He’s physically very strong. He’s very young and must develop on a technical level, but he will have time to do it, training every day with great champions."

Moving to Genoa appears to have been the gateway to such development, and he is now growing into his skin and looking an excellent option to bolster the Spurs backline.

He's not perfect, but aged just 21 and available for around £26m, it would be wise for Postecoglou to snap him up and continue to mould this exciting Tottenham project to his own creation.

The English winger joined Borussia Dortmund on a short-term loan deal in January after being frozen out of the Manchester United first-team squad for his public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag in August. Sancho, however, will report back to United at the end of his loan spell as the deal with the German club does not include a buy option.

Newcastle now keen to sign "excellent" World Cup winner ahead of Man City

Newcastle United are eyeing a move for an "excellent" player who is admired by a legendary former midfielder known to Premier League fans, according to a new report.

Newcastle transfer news

Eddie Howe has had a frustrating period in the last week or so, with a 1-0 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League damaging their hopes of reaching the knockout stages. Not only that, but the 2-2 draw away to Wolves in the league on Saturday was disappointing, considering Newcastle took the lead twice, and there is also the matter of having to accept that Sandro Tonali has been banned for 10 months for betting offences.

While the Magpies' squad is full of great options these days, whether it be Sven Botman at the back, Bruno Guimaraes in midfield, or Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson in attack, it would be a surprise if the January transfer window passed without any signings being made. Midfield looks like the primary area to focus on, considering the absence of Tonali for the rest of the season, and various names have been thrown into the hat as potential choices.

Now, another individual has emerged as a transfer target for Howe's side – one who is currently plying his trade abroad and enhancing his reputation.

Newcastle want Exequiel Palacios

According to a fresh transfer claim from TNT Sports [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios in January. The Magpies are thought to be "seriously considering the possibility" of making a move for the 25-year-old, but they aren't the only Premier League who are targeting him, with Manchester City and Aston Villa also in the mix. It is seen as a "tantalising opportunity" for Palacios, in terms of moving to arguably the best league in the world, but it remains to be seen if Leverkusen will sanction his exit.

This could be a really exciting piece of business by Newcastle in January, with the defensive midfielder someone who is a key part of an impressive Leverkusen team under Xabi Alonso – one that currently sits top of the Bundesliga, having only dropped point in their first nine matches. Palacios' statistics sum up how important he is for his side, considering he has started eight of their nine league matches, scoring twice and assisting three times in the process.

There is also the small matter of him winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentine last year, and while he was far from a key starter in the competition, he still appeared in three games overall. Alonso himself is clearly an admirer of Palacios as a player, hailing his influence after returning from the World Cup and saying:

"Pala is back from the World Cup, he’s been playing at an excellent level for two months. The great improvement of the team has come, in large part, thanks to the step forward that Pala has made in his game."

Leverkusen will no doubt be desperate to retain their player's services, so it won't be easy to strike a deal – the lure of joining European champions City could also be great – but Palacios could help fill the Tonali-shaped void, and more.

However, Daly has found opportunities hard to come by in recent times, not starting any of England's last eight games, and she only got a few minutes off the bench in the April international break over this past week.

In a statement released on social media, Daly wrote: "I would love nothing more than to play for England forever, but the time has come for me to hang my boots up on the international stage. While today is an extremely difficult day for me, it is also one filled with reflection and immense gratitude. Playing for and representing England has been the greatest honour. During my eight years as a Lioness, I’ve always pursued success and winning football matches, while playing and training with the highest standards of competition, passion and perseverance. It has been the greatest honour to represent my family, my teammates and the entire country.

"I have a lot of incredible memories during my time with England that have been pivotal moments. Winning the Euros and then reaching the World Cup final changed a lot for me, not only as a footballer but as a person. I’m so fortunate that I've been able to share that with so many remarkable people throughout my journey. I have made special friendships that will last a lifetime.

"I will be eternally grateful to have been given the opportunity to wear the England badge with immense pride over the past eight years. Despite being a centre forward, Daly spent most of her international career starring in different roles. She started all of England's games at Euro 2022 as a left-back and adapted to play a left wing-back role during the World Cup.

Though neither were her natural positions, the 32-year-old repeatedly stated that she would happily play anywhere for the good of the team. "I'm not bothered! You can stand there all day and ask me the same questions and I'm going to give you the same answers because it's the truth," she said last year.

"I'm genuinely happy to play in any role. I think, obviously, playing in the No.9 is something I do week in, week out so it's a little bit more natural for me. But whatever role I'm given, I'll do it to the best of my ability."

BCCI registers new constitution in step towards implementing Lodha reforms

The BCCI has registered its new constitution with the Tamil Nadu Registrar of Societies in Chennai on August 21, following the Supreme Court order on August 9.The new constitution had some key tweaks from the one originally proposed by the Lodha Committee, including setting aside the one-state one-vote policy and allowing states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat to have multiple voting members. In its August 9 order, the apex court had directed the BCCI to register its new constitution within four weeks of the order.

Selection panel increased to five members

Gagan Khoda and Jatin Paranjpe will rejoin the selection panel that had been whittled down to three members after the original Lodha recommendations. The August 9 Supreme Court order restored the strength of the senior selection panel to five, while also setting aside the directive that each of the five had to have played Test cricket for India. The existing members of the selection panel are chairman MSK Prasad, Devang Gandhi and Sarandeep Singh.

The new constitution notes that while every full member shall have voting rights and that no state would have more than one full member, exceptions would be made for Gujarat and Maharashtra, with all six of Gujarat, Saurashtra, Baroda, Vidarbha, Maharashtra and Mumbai to continue to remain full members.Railways, Services and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) will also have voting rights, though it is explicitly stated that the voting representative for each of these has to be a former cricketer who has played for the association (or in the case of AIU, a first-class cricketer who has represented a university in the All India Inter-University tournament), and not a person nominated by the government or the association. As directed by the Supreme Court in its August 9 order, the cooling-off period terms have been relaxed, with officials now allowed to serve two consecutive three-year terms at either state or BCCI level (or a combination of the two) before a mandatory cooling-off term.Among other important points, the new constitution also makes a provision for a Players’ Association, to be funded by the BCCI, to make provisions for players’ families to accompany them for periods on longer tours in particular, and offering “appropriate remuneration of international standard” to international players. The last makes specific mention of “recalling that national representation has priority over club or franchise.”Vinod Rai and Diana Eduljee, who constitute the Committee of Administrators that is overseeing the board at present, said in a joint statement: “We thank the Honorable Supreme Court for their directions and are pleased to start the process today by the submission of the new constitution of the BCCI with the Tamil Nadu Registrar of Societies at Chennai. We are committed to implement the Supreme Court directive in its entirety.”They also said that the state associations have to conform to the judgement of the Supreme Court and report compliance within 30 days.

ScorecardGlamorgan were denied their second win of the season by the Derbyshire tailenders at Swansea, where Tony Palladino – who faced 108 balls for his unbeaten 30 – and Duanne Olivier batted out the final 14.3 overs to earn the visitors a draw. When Derbyshire lost their eighth wicket, Glamorgan were favourites to win but, with stubborn resistance and some good fortune, the visitors held out.Glamorgan had resumed at their overnight score of 201 for 3, making rapid progress in the opening session as 107 runs were scored in the first hour at the rate of six runs an over. Kiran Carlson and Usman Khawaja shared a record partnership of 289 for the fourth wicket, the highest for any wicket for Glamorgan against Derbyshire, surpassing the previous record set by Mark Cosgrove and Michael Powell.Khawaja was to the first to reach his century, and he also became the first Glamorgan batsman to score successive hundreds in his fist two games for the club. Carlson reached his landmark shortly afterwards before racing to his next fifty from only 20 deliveries. Both batsmen surrendered their wickets in the quest for quick runs, and after David Lloyd had struck a brisk undefeated 43, Glamorgan declared to leave Derbyshire a target of 325 from a minimum of 63 overs. The visitors were soon in trouble as Harvey Hosein had his middle stump uprooted in Michael Hogan’s first over, then Ben Slater was lbw to Andrew Salter – also in his first over – with Derbyshire struggling at 18 for 2.Much depended on Derbyshire’s best batsmen Wayne Madsen, and he responded with some aggressive shots, notably against Salter, whom he struck for three fours in one over. However, Alex Hughes was the next to go when he edged Hogan, who had changed ends, to second slip.Derbyshire resumed after tea on 77 for 3, with 40 overs remaining, but there then followed a flurry of wickets. Ben Godleman was the first to go when he chipped Prem Sisodiya to midwicket, before the 19-year-old debutant took the vital wicket of Madsen, who was caught at backward point. When Matt Critchley became Hogan’s third victim, Derbyshire had slumped to 93 for 6, but Gary Wilson and Palladino provided stubborn resistance for 15.2 overs. Wilson faced 72 balls before he was lbw to Lukas Carey for 26, a decision he clearly didn’t agree with, as he stalked back to the pavilion.Hamidullah Qadri quickly followed for a pair in the game to give Hogan his fourth wicket – but there was further frustration for Glamorgan as Olivier joined Palladino to defend on a fourth-day pitch that offered little to the bowlers.
