Long before the days of franchise cricket sustaining players through the off-season, Mott spent several years playing in the Lancashire League, but in 2003, he went off the beaten track and joined Excelsior ’20 in Rotterdam. But England’s defence of their 50-over crown has been a mess, with Saturday’s 33-run defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad representing their second-best result. They will need at least one win and possibly two to finish in the top eight and seal a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy; failure to do so will leave Mott vulnerable.He has found himself under growing pressure as this World Cup has worn on, not helped by Morgan’s suggestion that there is “something else going on” than simply players being out of form collectively. Mott pushed back against those comments and while some react better to defeats than others, there has not been any obvious rift in the squad.Instead, the sense is that England are a team bereft of confidence, without the relevant experience and muscle memory of recent ODI success that helped them get through the setbacks they encountered on home soil four years ago. Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned for his second spell with four overs remaining in the Punjab Kings innings. At 132 for 4 Punjab may have imagined they could get a minimum of 40-50 runs off the last 24 deliveries with the power-hitting muscle of Liam Livingstone and Shahrukh Khan well settled at the crease.Bhuvneshwar ran in and banged the first ball just short of a length, running his first two fingers down the side of the seam to deliver a slow cutter that Shahrukh failed to read. Perhaps over-eager in his effort to smack the ball over long-off, he ended up reaching for the ball and slicing it, and it ballooned to Kane Williamson at cover.Bhuvneshwar would give away only two runs in the rest of the over, leaving Livingstone and Odean Smith frustrated.Returning to deliver the penultimate over of Punjab’s innings, Bhuvneshwar suffered a rare moment of punishment against a pretty good ball, as Smith manufactured the room and power to flat-bat a cramping short ball back over the bowler’s head for six. But Bhuvneshwar wasn’t going to let that shot make him veer from his plan of bowling a hard length with variations of pace. The final ball was another short-of-a-length legcutter, and Livingstone, just like Shahrukh, got sucked into a mis-controlled shot while reaching for the ball, and Williamson pouched a lovely low catch, completing it with both hands while falling forward.Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up 3 for 22 in his four overs•BCCIAt the beginning of the 17th over, ESPNcricinfo’s forecaster projected that Punjab would reach a total of 172. By the start of the 20th, it had come down to 162. Eventually Punjab were bowled out for 151, which their stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan would later say was easily 30-40 runs short of a defendable total.Dhawan had also fallen into Bhuvneshwar’s trap during his first spell with the new ball. Dhawan had shown an eagerness to charge out of his crease during Bhuvneshwar’s first over, even doing so immediately after being hit in the box. Seeing him step out again in his second over, Bhuvneshwar pulled his length back, and Dhawan went through with his shot without really being in the position for it and found the fielder at mid-on. After three overs, of which Bhuvneshwar had delivered two, Punjab were 13 or 1. It would play a part in Punjab making their second-lowest Powerplay score (48 for 2) this season.Speaking to after the win on Sunday, Bhuvneshwar said that he figured out as soon as he had bowled his first ball that there would be no swing on offer. So he shifted to bowling back of a length and trying to get whatever he could out of a pitch that gripped and also offered extra bounce.He went on to explain the thinking behind the Dhawan wicket. “I knew that generally that’s how he [Dhawan] approaches to [attack] me,” Bhuvneshwar said. “I knew that he was going to step out and look for the boundaries, but I just wanted to hit the hard lengths just to see if there could be any top edge. And luckily that happened.”I always try to bowl to the batsman’s weakness, or [it] depends on the ground’s dimensions, where I can look to tuck them up. It’s a basic and simple thing for me – go with the batsman’s weakness or my strength – and depending on the wicket as well; if I can bowl the slower [ball] or bouncer or yorker. These are the little things I look to do.”The Dhawan wicket made Bhuvneshwar the highest wicket-taker in the powerplay in IPL history, moving above Zaheer Khan.If Bhuvneshwar is the yin of this enviable Sunrisers fast-bowling attack, Umran Malik is the yang. Only Lockie Ferguson matches Malik in the IPL when it comes to hitting the 150kph mark consistently.Malik, a raw diamond from Jammu, was unearthed by Sunrisers in IPL 2021 and retained before the 2022 auction. He has dazzled in nearly every match and even left the great Dale Steyn, the fast-bowling coach at Sunrisers, gobsmacked after delivering a stunning 140kph yorker to rattle back the stumps of Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer.After that match, Sunrisers’ director of cricket Tom Moody said the franchise had given Malik the freedom to express himself, with the understanding that while his searing pace might occasionally leak runs – especially behind the wicket – it would always be a wicket-taking threat.It was always going to be a engrossing battle between Malik against Punjab, a team that has shown an uncompromising attitude of trying to attack every ball and every bowler no matter what the match situation may be.Umran Malik ended the Punjab Kings innings with a triple-wicket maiden•BCCIMalik came into the attack to bowl the second over after the powerplay. Jitesh Sharma utilised the pace and the width of the first ball to pick up a slashed four. Malik then went fuller for the next four balls, missed his length off one of them, and Jitesh flicked him for another four.Malik decided to change his plan for the next ball at the behest of his captain Kane Williamson. The first part of the plan was to change the field and have three fielders behind square on the off side. Fine leg was inside the circle. Malik steamed in to bang a 148 kph delivery short of a length. The ball kicked up quickly into Jitesh, who sent a hurried pull ballooning straight up, and Malik grabbed the catch in his follow-through.The blazing pace at which Malik bowls makes every ball a spectacle. When it fails, he can get carted for runs – today Livingstone uppercut and pulled him for sixes when his short ball ended up less than ideally directed. But when it works it can send the stumps flying, as Malik did twice against the Punjab lower order and tail, grabbing three wickets in the final over of the innings, which was also a maiden.Asked whether he found it helpful to have Malik bowl at the other end, Bhuvneshwar cracked an impromptu joke. “I don’t think it helps; I think somewhere batsmen think: ‘look, he [Bhuvneshwar] bowls slow. So go after him.’ But looking at him, it always gives you joy that somebody is scaring batsmen and getting wickets like that. It’s always a joy to watch him. Hopefully, I get wickets [if batters go after him instead].”Malik won the Player-of-the-Match award, but he was fourth on ESPNcricinfo’s list of Most Valuable Players (MVPs), which is calculated using the Smart Stats algorithm that works out each player’s impact. Bhuvneshwar was second behind Livingstone.In different ways Bhuvneshwar and Malik bossed Punjab, bowling intellect and ferocious pace combining in a most lethal manner.

About a week after the Yankees were eliminated from the MLB playoffs by the Blue Jays, New York shortstop Anthony Volpe underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the ' Joel Sherman and Greg Joyce reported on Wednesday.

Volpe suffered the injury back in May when making a diving play. He only missed one game, the day after the injury, and quickly returned to the field.

The Gold Glove winner is expected to be recovered in time for the 2026 season, although his return could be pushed back depending how his recovery goes.

Volpe had a rough end of the regular season as he was briefly benched while going through quite a slump. The shortstop ended the season with averages of .212/.272/.391, pretty on par with the rest of his young career. He'll have a lot of pressure on him when he returns in 2026 to up his game.

Mohamed Salah has been told his complaints that Liverpool have "thrown him under the bus" after another first-team omission "don't stack up". The Egypt international dropped a bombshell interview after his side's 3-3 draw with Leeds United on Saturday, throwing his Anfield future into question. Now, ex-Reds ace Danny Murphy has criticised the 33-year-old for his "emotional response".

Salah in another remarkable interview

Just over a year ago, Salah shocked the footballing world when he said he was "probably more out than in" as his contract ticked towards its final six months. The former Chelsea man eventually signed a new two-year deal earlier this year but it hasn't taken long for him to be back in the headlines. Not long after Liverpool's thrilling draw at Elland Road, Salah said it is "very clear" someone wants him to "get all of the blame", that the club has "thrown him under the bus" and that this situation was unacceptable. Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has slammed his outburst and now ex-England international Murphy has weighed in on the matter.

Murphy made it clear he didn't give much credence to Salah's claims and that this was something said in the heat of the moment.

He said on BBC's Match of the Day: "We know that’s an emotional response and doesn’t really stack up. Everyone has to keep fighting for their place and performing at a certain level. I don’t think he’s [Salah] on his own. I think there are a lot of other big-name players starting to get stick and get the fanbase turning a little bit against them. Everyone’s getting judged."

The former Fulham player also doesn't believe that Salah is unfairly being singled out, particularly as lots of his team-mates are being criticised for their performances as well. He added that this is not how a top professional conducts himself.

"It’s not true, it’s not true. I think you can be emotional and you can be angry and frustrated, he’s done wonderful things for the football club. [But] you have to keep it in the four walls of the club," Murphy said. "Knock on the manager’s door, go and see the CEO, whoever it is, go and see the owners, do whatever you’ve got to do, express your frustration. He’s causing the team a problem and the manager a problem. And he’s making it all about him. And you just can’t do it. Whether you agree with him being left out or not you don’t deal with it like this."

Slot on Salah omission

For the second time in three Premier League outings, Salah was an unused substitute for Liverpool, who sit eighth in the table. The defending champions are 10 points behind table-toppers Arsenal, with Arne Slot's side looking almost unrecognisable from the team that romped to the league title last term. 

When asked why Salah did not come off the bench, manager Slot said: "It was more about controlling the game at [3-2 to Liverpool] and we didn't need a goal. Normally, when you need a goal, like last week against Sunderland, I brought Mo on."

Not long after, Salah – who scored 29 goals and added 18 assists in the league last season but this campaign he has just four goals and two assists – would say he no longer had a relationship with the Dutchman.

It remains to be seen what Slot will say about Salah's outburst and if he will start against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Reds then take on Brighton next weekend, which will be Salah's last match before heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt. So, does the veteran have a future at Anfield? Murphy thinks so. 

"I do think he will [play again]," he said. "I think he'll have time to settle down. Everyone will want a legend like Salah to go on good terms with a wonderful send-off, maybe at the end of the season as great players have had in the past. I hope it doesn't end badly because of everything he's given but there's always a chance if he's adamant. Liverpool are in charge of what happens because they have got his contract. But if he's adamant he wants to leave, maybe we'll see something in January."

The Brazilian, once considered a crucial part of Los Blancos’ attacking plans, has seen his role dramatically diminish since Alonso’s appointment, sparking widespread speculation about a potential January departure.

ESPN Brasil have backed up the possibility that Rodrygo could leave in January, stating that the ex-Santos sensation is “dissatisfied with his situation” and “maintains the option” of leaving as early as the next transfer window.

This has put a host of Premier League sides on alert, including Tottenham once again, and there are suggestions that the north Londoners could go all out for his signature.

Now backed by the Lewis family as they attempt to usher in a post-Daniel Levy era, the club, led by co-sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange are apparently prepared to pay a club-record £70 million for Rodrygo, according to reports from Spain.

The £283,000-per-week star would be a statement signing for the Lilywhites, and reports suggest that Real are prepared to slash his asking price from their original £88 million summer valuation down to around £53 million, amid rival interest from Arsenal and Chelsea (TEAMtalk).

This means that Spurs’ mooted £70m stance would be more than enough, but none of this means anything without the player’s approval.

Indeed, Rodrygo has now moved to speak out about his Madrid future, attempting to quell the noise surrounding his unrest in the Spanish capital.

Speaking to the media, Rodrygo has hinted at his unhappiness surrounding game time right now, but also suggests he has no fears when it comes to inclusion in Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.

While the attacker appears to be presenting the front of ‘I’ll work hard for the manager’, behind-the-scenes whispers tell a different story, and we wouldn’t at all be surprised if a Premier League club manages to tempt him across the channel.

Meanwhile, football finance expert Stefan Borson is convinced that Tottenham could sign Rodrygo on loan.

Tottenham take on Arsenal in a mouth-watering North London derby clash this weekend, with all eyes on that and the looming January window as Frank looks to put his stamp on the squad.

Sam Konstas’ bid to retain his Test place this summer will begin in India as he was named in the 14-man Australia A squad that will play India A in two red-ball four-day matches in Lucknow in September, albeit the squad has been selected with an eye towards Australia’s 2027 Test tour rather than the upcoming Ashes.Konstas was named alongside fellow Test opening candidate Nathan McSweeney and fellow teenager Oliver Peake in the squad. Promising Victoria opener Campbell Kellaway was also included among the batting group. It is highly unlikely that performances in India against India A in September will have any bearing on Ashes selection with the national selectors already on record saying that the first three Sheffield Shield rounds will be of most relevance. The squad has clearly been selected with a longer-term view of giving younger players experience in Indian conditions with Australia due to tour there for a five-match Test series in January-February of 2027, when the composition of Australia’s top six may look slightly different with Usman Khawaja very unlikely to still be playing by that point while Steven Smith turns 38 in June 2027.”The subcontinent provides many unique challenges and the opportunity to utilise different skills with bat and ball,” chairman of selectors George Bailey said.”We hope repeated experiences in these conditions will assist players in developing an effective method and understanding of their game for future sub-continent tours.”Test offspinner Todd Murphy was included in the squad having taken 14 wickets in four Tests in India in 2023, including a seven on Test debut in Nagpur. وجه ويسلي شنايدر نجم الكرة الهولندية السابق، كلمات واضحة إلى أحد نجوم ليفربول، قبل مواجهة مانشستر سيتي والريدز في الدوري الإنجليزي.

وتحدث شنايدر عن نجم ليفربول فلوريان فيرتز في تصريحات نشرتها “TRIBUNA”: “يستطيع اللاعب أن يلعب بشكل جيد في بلده”.

وأضاف: “لكن في بلدان أخرى قد يواجه صعوبة في التأقلم، اللاعبون الهولنديون والألمان كذلك، وأرى الأمر نفسه مع فلوريان فيرتز”.

وصنع فيرتز ثلاث تمريرات حاسمة في 15 مباراة لكنه لم يسجل أي هدف، وواصل شنايدر: “عندما تنضم إلى ناد كنجم كبير، عليك أن توضح لهم فوراً سبب تعاقدهم معك”.

وأكمل: “إذا لم تظهر لهم ذلك فلن يهتموا بك، في ناد مثل ليفربول، لا وقت للتأقلم ببطء، عليك أن تكون جاهزاً ويجب أن يحدث ذلك بسرعة الآن، وإلا فقد انتهى أمرك”.
