Emery’s next Rashford: Aston Villa remain in race to sign “special” £60m talent

For a team that can boast a 75-time Premier League goalscorer in Ollie Watkins and a £100m-rated Morgan Rogers, Aston Villa have looked rather limp in attack during the infancy of this new season.

Unai Emery’s men are yet to get off the board in terms of goals, and unfortunately, also wins, as Crystal Palace now await the out-of-sorts Villans before the early international break comes into view.

It could well be that the Spaniard has to dip his toes into the hectic transfer market to add some last-minute firepower to his unusually weary attack, with Villa still noted as being in the race for this £60m forward.

Aston Villa remain in race for £60m talent

Emery will certainly be pushed into making some last-ditch additions if more movement occurs out of the door at Villa Park.

Indeed, it has been rumbling away in the background that Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to splash the cash to land the aforementioned Rogers, with Villa perhaps needing this cash boost to make some standout purchases of their own.

Having recently received the prize of being the PFA Young Player of the Year, Rogers exiting the building would be an almighty blow, but Villa do have a high-profile attacking move up their sleeve, as well.

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has offered up a welcome development for fans of the West Midlands side, with the German journalist revealing that no agreement has yet been struck between Bayern Munich and Chelsea for the services of long-term Villa target Nicolas Jackson.

This means that Premier League sides are still in the mix, including Villa, with it yet to be seen if the striker would prefer move to Bavaria or the Midlands, to link up with his former Villarreal boss in Emery.

The ex-Arsenal manager will be hoping he can work his magic on another top-flight attacking misfit, having briefly breathed life back into Marcus Rashford’s bumpy playing days when he pulled on Villa claret and blue last season.

Why Jackson can be Emery's next Rashford

Rashford desperately needed an escape from the shackles of Manchester United last campaign.

The 27-year-old’s stay at his boyhood club had turned sour, to say the least, but while his working relationship with Ruben Amorim had broken down at Old Trafford, he managed to strike up a healthy connection to Emery on his Villans arrival.

In tow, Rashford – who is now on loan at Barcelona – would tally up an impressive four goals and six assists from just 17 outings at Villa Park.

Jackson will be praying he can be as blistering from the get-go if he makes the move to Villa, with his £60m price tag making a loan switch to the West Midlands look more likely – as opposed to a permanent move – owing to Emery and Co’s worrying PSR predicament.

The often scapegoated 24-year-old has flattered to deceive at points at Stamford Bridge, with a costly 43 big chances spurned across two Premier League seasons, but he has also shown a red-hot streak in spurts that could see him instantly explode into life away from Enzo Maresca’s men, in a similar fashion to Rashford’s reinvigorated displays under Emery’s wing.

After only bagging a mere one goal from his first seven Chelsea matches during his debut season, Jackson would then go on to light up West London with a clinical six strikes from his next eight matches.

His former Yellow Submarine head coach now needs to get this “special” – as he was once labelled by journalist Rahman Osman – side out of the Senegalese attacker more regularly.

The hit-and-miss Blues number 15 could well see his 24-goal tally in the Premier League rise under the Spaniard’s expertise, having already seen the heights Rashford managed to hit during his short stint.

After all, the Manchester-born star has been prone to being streaky himself, even during his United peak, with Erik ten Hag even declaring that Rashford was “unstoppable when he is in the mood”, as seen in him bagging a hefty 17 league goals under the Dutchman during the 2022/23 season, only to then follow that up with a slender seven strikes the next campaign.

Emery will be keeping his fingers crossed that Jackson moves on from his inconsistent form when lining up for Villa, with another stellar loan move perhaps in the making if he goes on to be a dangerous option up top that pushes the top-flight strugglers out of their early-season slump.

West Ham agree deal to sign England forward with medical completed

Securing their fourth arrival of the window, West Ham United have reportedly agreed a deal to sign a bargain striker who has experience in the Champions League and at international level.

West Ham's striker problem

Whilst much is made of striker curses elsewhere around London, West Ham have quietly been having plenty of trouble in that department themselves. If it hasn’t been Jarrod Bowen or Michail Antonio stepping up in recent seasons, then it’s been difficult to pick out just where the Hammers’ threat could come from going forward.

They welcomed Niclas Fullkrug in the hope of solving that problem last summer, only for the former Borussia Dortmund man to join a long list of struggling forwards. Now without Antonio, who left as a free agent earlier this summer, the Hammers desperately need someone to step up or step in through the transfer window.

To that end, there may still be some hope for Fullkrug, who was in a positive mood after scoring in West Ham’s friendly victory against Everton recently. If the Hammers can get him firing on all cylinders, then Graham Potter will certainly stand a far better chance at turning things around after enduring a tough start to life at the London Stadium.

However, it won’t just be the 32-year-old tasked with finding the back of the net for West Ham next season. Alongside him looks set to be an experienced England international.

West Ham agree deal to sign Wilson

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, West Ham have now agreed a deal to sign Callum Wilson. The former Newcastle United forward became a free agent after leaving the Magpies earlier this summer, but is now set to get his next move after completing a medical with the Hammers.

At 33 years old, there will naturally be some concerns that Wilson is not a long-term option, but if West Ham want a proven goalscorer then Wilson will certainly offer them that in the Premier League.

Porter to the fore as sorry Warwickshire swept aside inside five sessions

Essex power to victory at Edgbaston as Snater’s 69 is followed by another stellar bowling display

ECB Reporters Network18-Sep-2024Essex completed a crushing innings-and-40 runs Vitality County Championship win over Warwickshire inside five sessions at Edgbaston.Warwickshire’s top-order was blown away by the visiting seamers on the second morning, just as it had been on the first, to set up the most commanding victory for Tom Westley’s side. After Essex took their first innings to 232, thanks to Shane Snater’s 69 (72 balls), to secure a lead of 154, Warwickshire floundered to three for four and then 38 for six against superb bowling from Jamie Porter (six for 36) and Sam Cook (three for 36). Danny Briggs (51, 48) offered some resistance but Warwickshire, who looked a beaten side from ball one, were all out for 114 to follow their 78 all out in the first innings.Essex will face Division One leaders Surrey in their final game of the next week full of confidence from successive heavy victories. Warwickshire, still looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone, must reboot – and hope seamer Chris Rushworth recovers from injury – before their last game against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. The entire match was a tale of Essex domination and Warwickshire disarray and the story was encapsulated by the day’s first 35 minutes. After the visitors resumed on 189 for nine, last-wicket pair Snater and Porter extended their partnership to 60 in 14 overs. On a pitch which brought 19 wickets on the first day, Warwickshire at times deployed nine boundary fielders for Snater while Porter, with a first class batting average of 5.82 was untroubled. Further abetted by loose bowling and misfields, the pair eased Essex’s lead upwards before Craig Miles uprooted Snater’s middle stump. It was a wretched micro-session from Warwickshire which prompted their supporters to offer a few ribald thoughts from the stands – but things then went from bad to worse as their second innings hit three for four after 34 balls. The excellent Cook trapped Rob Yates lbw and plucked out the off-stumps of Will Rhodes (for a duck in his last innings as a Warwickshire player at Edgbaston) and Hamza Shaikh. Porter had Sam Hain caught at second slip from an inside-edge on to his pad.The procession continued when Ed Barnard edged Porter to wicketkeeper Michael Pepper, who kept superbly standing up to the seamers, and captain Alex Davies, having hewn 12 runs from 71 minutes, fell lbw to Snater to make it 38 for six.Briggs and Michael Burgess added 71 in 15 overs either side of lunch, the former striking 11 fours in an attractive half-century, but after Briggs edged Porter behind the end came quickly. Porter completed his five-for when Burgess (28, 66) was caught by Paul Walter at long on and rounded off the rout with the scalp of Rushworth, caught at mid off.

Durham go the whole Hogg to close in on Notts win

Debutant seamer takes four wickets across third day to leave Notts six down in follow-on

Daniel Hogg took his first four wickets in first-class cricket as Durham edged towards victory in their Vitality County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire despite some gritty resistance from Matt Montgomery and Jack Haynes.Durham picked up the last two Notts first-innings wickets with minimum fuss and the visitors only added nine runs to their overnight total, which left them with a first innings deficit of 302.The follow-on was then enforced by the hosts and the Notts opening pair of Ben Slater – who made his fourth fifty of the season – and Haseeb Hameed started well. But after Hameed was dismissed the floodgates opened and first-class debutant Hogg helped reduce Notts to 99 for 4.However, Montgomery and Haynes frustrated the hosts in the evening session, with the pair surviving 50.3 overs but Durham got two late wickets with the new ball to leave Notts 212 for 6 at stumps, still trailing by 90.Hogg was excellent throughout the day and he picked up the baton left by Neil Wagner, who was missing on Saturday due to a shoulder injury picked up in the field on day two. Skipper Scott Borthwick entrusted the 19-year-old with new-ball duties and he picked up four wickets across the day, including that of Hameed.Resuming on 220 for 8, the visitors had a mountain to climb as they were still 311 behind Durham’s total.Callum Parkinson created an early chance as Lyndon James was dropped by Ollie Robinson on 55, but James only added one more run to his tally as he attempted to pull a short ball from Ben Raine and edged it to Robinson.Hogg then wrapped up the innings with his maiden first-class wicket, as Brett Hutton was caught behind. In the follow-on, he caused Slater and Hameed plenty of problems, with Slater being dropped by Borthwick at first slip on 5.Ben Slater battled for his half-century•Getty Images

Hameed and Slater weathered the storm as they put on 52 for the first-wicket partnership, before Hameed was caught behind down the legside off the bowling of Hogg for 34 just before lunch to give the hosts their first scalp of the second innings.Raine then removed Freddie McCann in the first over after lunch with the youngster caught behind for a five-ball duck. Slater, who had passed a personal milestone of 8,000 career first-class runs earlier in the day, was living a charmed life but he made the most of his luck and played a lovely cover drive off the bowling of Parkinson. While Slater was beginning to motor, wickets continued to fall at the other end as Joe Clarke became Hogg’s third victim of the day, trapped LBW for 5. Slater made his fifty from 111 balls after surviving another drop from Borthwick on 49, but the opener was then run out by substitute fielder Paul Coughlin on 53 after a mix-up between the wickets with Haynes.Montgomery and Haynes adopted a rearguard action as the visitors looked to take as much time out of the game as they could with the pair batting out seven consecutive maidens at one point. The pair continued that approach after tea but there was a moment of controversy as Haynes hit a Parkinson delivery on to the shin of Graham Clark and it deflected back to the spinner who caught it. The Durham fielders were convinced that they had their man but umpires Paul Baldwin and Peter Hartley disagreed.Haynes reached his fifty off 143 balls just after Durham took the new ball, but Montgomery then fell at the hands of Hogg for a 164-ball 38, ending a 96-run partnership that lasted 50.3 overs. Raine then got Luke Fletcher for a duck, with the hosts needing four wickets to wrap up victory on day four.

The Black Cats are still riding the wave following their dramatic Championship playoff final victory over Sheffield United last month.

Sunderland plotting Japhet Tanganga move with release clause shared

According to GiveMeSport, Sunderland are plotting a move to sign Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga alongside the Clarets and the Whites.

It is claimed that Tanganga has a release clause in his current contract to leave for just under £2m, a figure which could represent great value for money considering the Lions have previously wanted £12m for their star centre-back.

The 26-year-old has impressed for Millwall after making his loan move permanent at The Den in 2024, and he has previous Premier League experience after coming through the Tottenham academy.

Before Spurs can make real headway on their summer recruitment drive, Postecoglou’s future must be resolved, and reliable club insider Paul O’Keefe recently shared that Levy has in fact made a call on when to do next – without formally communicating it just yet.

With Levy set to communicate his decision sooner rather than later, Spurs can then start getting to work on their transfer plans, if their potential search for a new manager doesn’t take centre stage for too long.

News emerged on Tuesday that Son Heung-min could leave Tottenham this summer after 10 years at the club (The Telegraph), despite Tottenham triggering a one-year extension clause in his contract.

Heung-min Son for Tottenham

If the South Korean star does leave, Spurs will acquire a fee for his faithful service, but they’d also need a replacement for him. In light of this news, it is no coincidence that Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane is being repeatedly linked with a move to north London.

Dejan Kulusevski is also out with a long-term injury and could take some time to get fully match fit again, so the need for a new winger is pretty prevalent.

Sergio Reguilon is confirmed to be leaving Tottenham as well, with Destiny Udogie now their only senior natural left-back.

Tottenham hold talks over signing New England left-back Peyton Miller

According to New England Revolution journalist Seth Macomber, who covers them for The Blazing Musket, MLS sensation Peyton Miller is now attracting serious interest from the Lilywhites.

As per Macomber, Tottenham have held talks with New England about signing Miller, with Levy and co displaying a real interest in signing the teenager.

The versatile full-back, who can play nearly anywhere on the left-flank, has been called the ‘real deal’ by American critics and is now a regular for New England after becoming the second-youngest player to both appear and start in an MLS match for them.

He could be an adept back-up option to Udogie, and his meteoric rise in the last two seasons looks to have really impressed Tottenham scouts.
