West Ham ready to sell "fast" summer signing in surprise January decision

West Ham are braced for an all-important January transfer window that may well define Nuno Espírito Santo’s first season in charge, with David Sullivan, Karren Brady and the Hammers board poised to back their new manager.

Following back-to-back Premier League wins and the first time they’ve won two straight home games since 2024, things are finally starting to click into gear for Nuno.

The Portuguese tinkered heavily with his first West Ham starting line-ups before finally discovering a winning formula against both Newcastle and Burnley, with Nuno naming an unchanged side for both matches as the east Londoners secured vital victories.

However, West Ham reportedly have no intention of resting on their laurels, and credible reports suggest that Nuno has been told they have a transfer budget to spend in the winter (Sky Sports).

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

West Ham 3-2 Burnley

Niclas Füllkrug’s damning injury record and lacklustre spell at the London Stadium is paving the way for him to leave in January, and it is believed that West Ham are actively targeting a striker to potentially replace the German.

While Callum Wilson has done well in West Ham’s last two games, even getting on the scoresheet against Burnley, Nuno won’t be too comfortable relying on the 33-year-old given his own torrid fitness record.

West Ham also want a new defender, and potentially a midfielder if they can manage it (Sky Sports), but it is worth noting that they won’t have a bottomless pit of cash for January either, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The potential sales of Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse could be crucial when it comes to raising funds, with all three players linked to the West Ham exit door and seemingly not part of Nuno’s long-term plans.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, in an interview with Hammers News, they could also make the surprise decision to sell another squad member who’s only just arrived.

West Ham now ready to sell summer signing Mads Hermansen

Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen swapped Leicester for the London Stadium in a £20 million deal last summer, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal in August, but the Dane has since lost his place in the starting eleven to Alphonse Areola.

He started West Ham’s first four games of the season, conceding 11 league goals in total, with Areola seizing the number one spot back and West Ham now pondering a shock January call.

According to Bailey, West Ham are ready to cash in on Hermansen if the opportunity arises, but could also send him out on loan to get minutes elsewhere before returning.

If the 25-year-old were to leave permanently already, it would mark one of the shortest stints of any new West Ham player in recent memory, but would it be the right move?

Hermansen’s had just four games to showcase his worth in a turbulent side who seem likely to be battling relegation, and the shot-stopper is still very young in goalkeeping years. His prime is still to come, and goalkeeping coaches like Casper Ankergren have revered the former Leicester star as a serious talent between the sticks.

John McEvoy: Who is the American billionaire looking to buy Sheffield Wednesday?

After being put into administration last week, Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly received first contacts from American billionaire John McEvoy.

Despite all the consequences that come with being put into administration, including a 12-point deduction, the mood has been relatively positive around Sheffield Wednesday. The era of Dejphon Chansiri has finally come to an end and fans flocked to the club shop in support of their side when the news emerged.

The future is finally looking up even if it does immediately start in League One next season and a number of potential owners have already emerged.

Kris Wigfield, joint administrator with insolvency firm Begbies Traynor provided an update about the Owls’ takeover on BBC Five Live’s Wake Up to Money programme.

Among those in the running to buy the club is McEvoy. According to The Telegraph, the American billionaire has asked questions about the club and is one of the early candidates that could yet complete a takeover.

Whilst everything is still at a very early stage, McEvoy is someone to keep an eye on. The interested candidate has made investments in baseball, ice-hockey and music in an impressive portfolio. Now, he could be on his way to Hillsborough.

Who is Sheffield Wednesday candidate John McEvoy?

So, who is McEvoy? Most will know him for his minority stakes in NHL side Nashville Predators and MLB side Colorado Rockies, but any music fans will also be well aware of Various Artists – a talent agency which manages the likes of Mel C and Tom Grennan.

Interestingly enough, that same talent agency manages Reverend and the Makers, who are fronted by famous Sheffield Wednesday fan John McClure – someone that McEvoy has reportedly already spoken to about buying the club.

Sheffield Wednesday administrator reveals "four or five" buyers and "criteria" they must meet

This is also not the first time that the American has shown an interest in English football. In 2022, reports claimed that he was considering a bid for Coventry City and even attended a game before a takeover failed to materialise.

McEvoy made a large share of his billions from founding a San Diego-based mobile device distribution company and could now use those billions to welcome Sheffield Wednesday into a new era.

On paper, he ticks the box for experience in the world of sports investment and the credentials to avoid the same problems that Chansiri handed the Owls.

Wojciech Szczesny recommends 'meditation and breathing' to angry Barcelona and Real Madrid stars after watching Clasico erupt in brawl

Wojciech Szczesny has recommended the Real Madrid and Barcelona players to practice "meditation and breathing" in the aftermath of last weekend's El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu. Tempers flared between the players of the two rivals following the hosts' 2-1 win, with the likes of Thibaut Courtois, Dani Carvajal, Vinicius Junior, and Lamine Yamal engaging in a tense exchange.

El Clasico turned into a feisty affair

Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu last weekend to end their four-game losing streak against the reigning La Liga champions, thanks to first-half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.

However, tempers flared between the two arch-rivals, with Thibaut Courtois, Dani Carvajal, and Vinícius Junior engaging in a tense exchange with Lamine Yamal. Madrid players were fired up ahead of the highly-anticipated match after Yamal, during a live stream, implied that Los Blancos “rob, complain, and do things" to win by questionable means.

After the full-time whistle, Carvajal, the Madrid captain, told Yamal: "You speak too much. Speak now." Yamal reportedly responded by saying: "See you in the tunnel," as he pointed towards the tunnel repetitively.

Speaking in a chat with Polish YouTubers, Szczesny said: “I learned early in my career that emotions don’t help me, so I try to disconnect. For example, after El Clasico, everyone was arguing and fighting, and I just thought, ‘We lost the match, but we have to move on.’ I would recommend that everyone practice meditation and work on their breathing. I do breathing exercises before the match and at halftime. People look at me strangely because I do it right in the middle of the locker room. I recommend working on your breathing in extreme conditions — in both cold and heat.”

Revealed: What makes Szczesny an expert at saving penalties

Barcelona had their third-choice goalkeeper Szczesny to thank for ensuring Madrid didn't complete a demolition job of Barcelona at the Bernabeu last weekend. He made nine saves – the most by a goalkeeper in an El Clasico since April 2017 – which also included a second-half save against an Mbappe penalty. It's the first time since the 2015-16 season that a goalkeeper made a successful penalty save in El Clasico.

With that, he has now saved the penalties of some of the greatest players in football history, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar. When asked how he prepares for penalties, the Polish goalkeeper said: “I study the penalty takers a lot before matches. I usually watch the last 20 penalties taken by the two or three players responsible for taking them and try to find the pattern in their shots. Sometimes their run-up also gives me information. There are players who shoot differently at important moments in the match or if the team is winning or losing. I try to gather all that information and then go with my instincts.

“As for Mbappe, he scored the last penalty against me (in the 4-3 win at home last season). I was feeling confident and knew he would choose the same side. Then you have to hope it happens, and luckily it did."

It must be remembered that Szczesny was a happily retired professional around a year ago, enjoying life with his family. However, an ACL injury to then first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen forced the club to look for emergency options, and they turned towards the former Arsenal and Juventus custodian. He established himself as a first-choice keeper under Hansi Flick in the second half of the season after coming out of retirement, proving that he still had enough in his tank to deliver at the highest level.

He agreed to renew his deal by another season over the summer, expressing his happiness at being third-choice behind summer signing Joan Garcia and Ter Stegen. In fact, he has emphasised that he wants to spend the season mentoring Garcia, believing that the 24-year-old has the potential to become the best goalkeeper in the world.

Injuries to both goalkeepers above the Warsaw-born player in the pecking order saw him being called into action. He has played six games on the trot and doesn't look out of place. However, both Szczesny and the club will be hoping that Garcia doesn't suffer further setbacks once he recovers. The ex-Espanyol goalkeeper underwent knee operation in late September, but there's optimism within the club that he could return to the lineup before the upcoming international break.

In any case, Garcia's return will not be rushed, which means we can expect Szczesny to retain his spot for the next few games, if not more.

Batting first 'to set the tone' inexperienced PBKS' best chance vs 'red-hot' MI

Varun Aaron believes the Ahmedabad surface gives PBKS a slight edge over MI in Qualifier 2

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jun-20258:30

Aaron: ‘Ahmedabad surface will suit Punjab more’

It’s Punjab Kings (PBKS) vs Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025, and Varun Aaron feels PBKS will have a slight edge in Ahmedabad because of the surface, since their top order thrives on such pitches.”I think the Ahmedabad surface, first of all, is going to suit Punjab. It’ll suit both teams, but Punjab more as such, because they rely heavily on both the openers,” Aaron said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “I think it’s good that they qualified in the top two. They’ve got that one game out. At least their young Indian contingent have seen a high-pressure, knockout kind of a game. And now they know what it’s all about. What they have to do and what they don’t have to do.”I’m sure Ricky Ponting has been in there. And now they can reset and go into this game. Like Shreyas Iyer said [after Qualifier 1], they lost a battle but they haven’t lost the war yet.”Related

Shreyas Iyer: PBKS 'lost the battle but not the war'

Tom Moody, meanwhile, urged PBKS to quickly move past their earlier setback – they folded for just 101 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Qualifier 1 in New Chandigarh and lost the game – and focus on the qualities that made them one of the standout teams this season. Though he felt MI were “definitely favourites” heading into the contest, “you’d never write off Punjab” because this side “has certainly punched above their weight”.MI knocked Gujarat Titans (GT) out in New Chandigarh on Friday after scoring 228 for 5 and set up Qualifier 2 against PBKS.”Well, they’ve had a little bit of time to park that disappointment,” Moody said of PBKS. “And they just need to refocus on what’s made them good this year. What is it that has made them really a threat throughout the year? And obviously, it’s a lot of their uncapped players have punched well above their weight.1:46

‘This is the new Punjab’

“It’s continuing to surround them full of confidence and faith. And if they do that on a good batting surface, there’s no doubt they’ll be competitive. But let’s face it, Mumbai are going to be coming in red-hot after a good performance up in Chandigarh. And have sort of, in a way, washed away all the negative aspects of their season. Whether it be individual form, the losses that they had early on in the tournament. They’re very good at the business end.”Aaron also stressed on the importance of setting the tone early in this knockout game. He agreed with Moody that setting a target was the better strategy, especially for a team with an inexperienced batting line-up like PBKS.”I think Punjab would love to set the tone. Especially in a knockout game like this,” Aaron said. “I completely agree with Tom: it’s always better to set the target. Again, that’s also because they’ve got a very inexperienced batting unit. Yes, they have a good batting unit, but inexperienced.”So in a game like this, pressure can really get to you. It’s better you set the target, less pressure, and then let your bowlers do the rest.”

Chelsea chiefs now convinced 17-year-old could be their next Estevao

Estevao Willian arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer amid plenty of excitement, but Chelsea now believe another teenager could follow in his footsteps.

The Brazilian, who scored against Enzo Maresca’s side for ex-club Palmeiras at the Club World Cup, is being tipped for an incredibly bright future.

Despite being just 18, Estevao already boasts seven senior caps for the Brazil national side, and bagged his first goal for the five-time World Cup winners in a 3-0 victory over Chile in their last round of qualifiers.

By doing this, Estevao became the youngest Brazil goalscorer in a competitive match since footballing icon Pele.

For Chelsea, the bright young forward has already made three Premier League appearances and notched his first assist for the west Londoners in a 5-1 demolition of West Ham at the London Stadium.

He’s also poised to appear in the Champions League after being named in their official squad for the league phase — travelling with Maresca’s men to face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena this week.

All eyes are now on the dazzling teenager, who has been called the best talent to come out of Brazil since Neymar.

However, as Estevao continues to grab headlines with his potential, Stamford Bridge chiefs are convinced they’ll soon have the next “biggest thing” as well.

Chelsea convinced Dastan Satpaev could be their next Estevao

That is according to journalist Simon Phillips, who told his Substack that Chelsea expect big things from Dastan Satpaev — who’ll join Maresca’s side next summer once he turns 18.

Back in February, Chelsea agreed a £4 million deal to sign Satpaev from Kairat Almaty, which is a record transfer fee for the Kazakhstani first division.

Now, those within the club believe he actually could be the next Estevao.

Interestingly, Chelsea’s faith in Satpaev is backed up by Fabrizio Romano.

The reliable transfer journalist, speaking after Chelsea put pen to paper, revealed that BlueCo actually beat a German club to the youngster’s signature and are convinced he’s got “special” skills.

Shadab's all-round stocks rise as Islamabad United pummel Karachi Kings

League leaders buck the earlier trend where teams batting first were winning in the PSL

Danyal Rasool20-Apr-2025Islamabad United kept their stranglehold on PSL 2025, swatting aside Karachi Kings and romping to a seven-wicket victory on Sunday night. Bucking the trend of sides struggling to chase, United inserted Kings and kept their batters in a vice-like grip with regular wickets. Shadab Khan led the way with both ball and bat, taking 2 for 17 in his four before steering the chase with a composed 40-ball 47. It meant United made short work of Kings’ 128, winning with three overs to spare.United flew in the face of recent history; the last six matches this tournament have seen the side batting first win with ease. Upon winning the toss, they put Kings in, and Naseem Shah wasted no time cleaning up David Warner with a slower delivery that cut in. He was followed up by Jason Holder, the tournament’s lead wicket-taker, seaming one away to rock James Vince’s off stump.United’s bowling quality prevented Kings from getting off to the kind of powerplay start teams commonly have this season. The first five overs produced just 29 runs, with Shadab and Imad Wasim posing further difficulties after the powerplay. The two spinners combined for three wickets and conceded just 34 in eight overs, with Saad Baig’s 17-ball 20 the only instance of a top-seven batter succeeding in scoring at over a run-a-ball.Abbas Afridi slammed a 9-ball 24•PCBIt was only in the final two overs that Kings truly cut loose. Abbas Afridi smashed Naseem for a pair of sixes and flew to an unbeaten 24 off the nine balls he faced, helping Kings get past 120.It never looked enough for a United side so adroit at working their way through low targets and storming to big wins. Sahibzada Farhan’s dream season continued as a cameo broke the back of the chase early on, his 30 off 18 enough to guarantee the required rate would not pose problems for his side. Azam Khan, opening alongside Farhan, was uncharacteristically subdued, but in a chase that only required him to anchor, he did just that.Hasan Ali’s two-wicket over, which got rid of Farhan and Colin Munro, offered a brief moment of optimism for his side, but just as United did on the opening day chasing a low total, they hunkered down and made sure they weren’t giving wickets away cheaply.Shadab and Azam combined for 65 in 52 balls to take the sting out of Kings’ attack, a masterclass in drawing jeopardy out of a modest T20 chase. With the scores level and Shadab three away from a half-century, Afridi knocked his middle stump back, but the rueful smile he exchanged with Shadab made clear who really had the upper hand. The winning run was knocked off the following delivery to confirm United’s fourth win in as many games.

Leeds now have "good chance" of signing £150k-a-week England international

Leeds United are now “keeping close checks” on an “exceptional” player, and there is a “good chance” he completes a move to Elland Road.

Leeds looking to bolster midfield options

One of Daniel Farke’s main tasks this summer has been to improve his central midfield options, bringing in the likes of Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach, but two of the manager’s Championship promotion-winners stole the headlines against Everton.

Ao Tanaka was voted the Player of the Match by Leeds fans after the 1-0 victory against Everton, and the Japan international was not the only midfielder who impressed, with Ethan Ampadu winning six of the eight duels he contested to keep the Toffees at bay.

However, there has now been a disappointing new injury update on both Tanaka and Ampadu, with the two midfielders being ruled out due to MCL injuries.

As such, Farke may feel a need to dip bring in another central midfielder before the transfer deadline, and transfer expert Graeme Bailey has now revealed the Whites are in a strong position to get a deal for one of their former players over the line…

Speaking to Leeds United News, Bailey suggested that Kalvin Phillips could soon be on his way to Elland Road, saying: “Leeds are keeping very close checks on Kalvin Phillips – am told that Man City might be trying to pay up his contract – there is still a good chance he ends up at Elland Road.”

Phillips still has nearly three years remaining on a £150k-a-week deal with City, but Pep Guardiola’s side are clearly eager to get him off the books, which could open the door for a return to Leeds.

The Whites are very keen on bringing in a new central midfielder.

1 ByDominic Lund Aug 27, 2025 Signing Phillips could be gamble worth taking for Leeds

If Man City are willing to pay off the 29-year-old’s contract, bringing him in could be a risk worth taking for Farke, given that the former Leeds man has proven he has what it takes to perform at Premier League level in the past.

The defensive midfielder made 49 appearances across the Whites’ two previous stints in the Premier League, during which time his form was good enough to earn regular call-ups for the Three Lions, with the Englishman picking up 31 international caps.

Kalvin Phillips with Ipswich Town.

Despite being lauded as an “exceptional human being” by Man City boss Pep Guardiola, the ex-Ipswich Town loanee didn’t exactly set the world alight at Portman Road last season, however, given that he suffered two major injury setbacks.

That said, given that Phillips could potentially be available on a free transfer, he would be a low-risk signing for Leeds, who are perhaps in need of more depth in midfield, given that they are light on options following injuries to Ampadu and Tanaka.

Alexander Isak's £78m Liverpool salary shared, big pay rise after Newcastle exit

New Liverpool signing Alexander Isak’s Anfield wage has already been shared as he jets off on international duty before his debut for the Reds.

Liverpool agree £130m deal to sign Alexander Isak

FSG have splashed the cash in the summer of 2025, breaking the club transfer record on two occasions. The first saw Florian Wirtz arrive from Bayer Leverkusen for a whopping £116m, but that has now been topped by a deal for Isak.

In what has been the transfer saga of the summer, Isak, who has been on strike at Newcastle, will return to Anfield after his matches with Sweden in a deal worth a British record £130m.

The striker has signed a six-year deal on Merseyside until 2031, looking to fire Arne Slot’s side to constant glory.

Isak’s Liverpool salary has already been revealed

According to reports in August relayed by Give Me Sport, Isak’s Anfield salary has already been set in stone for some time. Picking up £120,000-a-week during his time at St James’ Park, the marquee signing, as to be expected, is on course for a bumper pay rise.

It is believed that Isak will collect £250,000-a-week with the Reds, taking his annual salary to £13m-a-year. Therefore, over his six-year contract, Isak is on course to earn a whopping £78m.

That will see him become Liverpool’s third-highest earner behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, with the Reds legends both penning extensions in 2025. Salah’s recent deal sees him collect £400,000-a-week, whereas star centre-back and club captain Van Dijk picks up £350,000-a-week.

In terms of Isak’s Premier League striker rivals, he will collect more than Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres, on £200,000-a-week, but nowhere near as much as Erling Haaland, who is on £525,000-a-week with Manchester City.

Newcastle in contact to sign "efficient" 24 y/o striker ahead of Tottenham

Newcastle United are now believed to have made contact over the signing of an “efficient” attacking player, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Newcastle continue to eye attacking signings

Eddie Howe knows the importance of adding attacking firepower to his squad this summer after a move for winger Anthony Elanga, regardless of whether star striker Alexander Isak stays put at the club or not.

One rumoured option for Newcastle is Nice attacker Evann Guessand, with club scouts reportedly sent to watch him in action during the past year or so. He is capable of shining in both a central and wide attacking role, which could appeal.

Nice's Evann Guessand.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are said to be preparing to make a move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, which would be a major statement of intent. The former Manchester City star would surely only arrive if Isak leaves, though, with Howe likely to find it hard to fit both players into the same team on a regular basis.

Newcastle’s interest in Brentford ace Yoane Wissa is also reportedly strong, with one update even claiming that they have agreed personal terms with him over a switch to St James’ Park.

Newcastle make contact over signing Spurs target Guessand

Now, according to a new report from Africa Foot [via Sport Witness], Newcastle have made contact with Guessand over a summer move to the club.

They haven’t yet opened formal talks with the 24-year-old’s representatives over a transfer, but it looks as though the wheels are in motion. The next few days are said to be key, though, with Tottenham and Villarreal also in the race, however, Spurs’ talks are slowing down which could allow the Magpies to swoop in.

Evann Guessand in action for Nice in Ligue 1.

Guessand is a player with so much to offer, so it is no surprise to see Newcastle targeting him, with his versatility in attack an immediate bonus.

The 10-cap Ivory Coast international has 21 goals in 109 appearances for Nice, which is a solid return, but he could be an even more potent player alongside superior players at St James’, having been described as both “electric” and “efficient” by journalist Antonio Mango.

Guessand could come in as ideal cover for Isak, who Newcastle simply must keep hold of, not necessarily always starting matches but proving to be an excellent squad option.

The Magpies are competing in four different competitions in 2025/26, following their return to the Champions League, so added depth is vital, and the Nice attacker has the potential to grow into a brilliant player for Howe.
