Spinners set up easy win for India

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFor Indian bowlers, the Kochi pitch brought respite as they finally exerted some control over the batsmen•BCCIRohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continued their prolific runs to set up India’s chase with effortless half-centuries after India’s spinners, led by Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina, had taken eight wickets to bowl West Indies out for a below-par total in Kochi.Shikhar Dhawan was caught behind off a rising Jason Holder delivery in the fourth over, but Rohit and Kohli were unfazed by the dual nature of the pitch, and kept scoring freely throughout their 133-run partnership in 21.4 overs. It was Kohli who did the bulk of the scoring in the first 10 overs, hitting five boundaries against Rohit’s one. But as soon as Sunil Narine was introduced in the 11th over, Rohit took over the role of aggressor. The next seven hits to the boundary came from Rohit’s bat, as he used a wide array of shots – from powerful slog-sweeps to deft late-cuts – to zoom past Kohli. During the course of his innings, he went past Misbah-ul-Haq to become the leading run-scorer in 2013, but just when a century looked certain, he pulled one straight to deep midwicket to be dismissed for 72, with his tally of international runs since October standing on 859.Kohli had been happy to turn over the strike to Rohit during their partnership, but he switched gears as a struggling Yuvraj Singh – not Raina – joined him in the middle. A couple of powerful pulls were unleashed against the fast bowlers – the second one making him the joint-fastest to reach 5000 ODI runs along with Viv Richards, in 114 innings. But just like Rohit, he too was dismissed when a hundred appeared for the taking.India needed 20 runs at that stage off 18.4 overs, which despite a brief flutter, was not enough for the West Indies to defend. Apart from Rohit and Kohli, none of the batsmen from either team found it easy to bat.For Indian bowlers though, the Kochi pitch brought a respite, soothing the wounds they endured during the series against Australia last month, as they finally exerted some control over the batsmen.West Indies had recovered from the loss of Chris Gayle in the first over to get to 63 for 1 after ten overs when spin was introduced. Jadeja, who had been left out of the Tests to nurse his injured shoulder, took only four balls to make an impact. Johnson Charles, trying to whip a flighted delivery to the leg side, got a leading edge towards Jadeja, who dived full length to his left to pull off a one-handed blinder.Smart stats

Virat Kohli completed 5000 ODI runs in this match, in his 114th innings, equalling Viv Richards’ record as the fastest batsman in ODIs to 5000 runs. For India, Sourav Ganguly was the previous batsman fastest to 5000 ODI runs, having reached the landmark in 126 innings.

Kohli has won five Man-of-the-Match awards in ODIs in 2013, the most by any batsman this year. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Misbah-ul-Haq are next in that list with four awards each.

Ravindra Jadeja has become the leading wicket-taker in ODIs in 2013 going ahead of Saeed Ajmal. Jadeja has taken 49 wickets at 22.22 from 29 ODIs this year as opposed to Ajmal’s 48 wickets at 19.77 from 25 ODIs. Click here for a list of the leading wicket-takers in ODIs this year.

Rohit Sharma has become the highest run-scorer in ODIs this year. He has scored 1143 runs at 60.15 from 23 matches. Kohli is joint-second in that list; he has scored 1119 from 26 innings at 55.95 and is tied with Misbah.

The 133-run partnership between Kohli and Rohit in this match was the second highest for India for the second wicket against West Indies.

Raina’s bowling figures of 3 for 34 were his best in ODIs and the first time he took three wickets in an innings. His previous-best ODI figures also came against West Indies, in Indore in 2011, when he took 2 for 17.

West Indies’ opening partnerships have added all of 85 runs in their last ten ODIs against India in India. The highest they have put together for their first wicket in the last ten ODIs is 34, added by Kirk Edwards and Dwayne Smith in the 2011 World Cup league match.

That the ball had stopped a touch on the batsman was an indication for MS Dhoni to introduce spin at both ends. Raina didn’t have to wait for long either. His eighth delivery barely bounced, hitting the base of the middle stump to dismiss a well-set Marlon Samuels.Raina added two more wickets – Lendl Simmons was adjudged lbw to one which was probably spinning down the leg side while Narsingh Deonarine had himself to blame for playing across the line to a straighter one – and ended up with his best ODI figures of 10-1-34-3.Darren Bravo, though, fought back with 59 off 77 deliveries. He manoeuvered the strike around in company of Simmons – both adding 65 for the fourth wicket – while being severe on anything that was pitched up. Twice, he hit flighted deliveries from Jadeja into the stands. However, he too was dismissed by one that stayed low from Mohammed Shami during the Powerplay. His dismissal signaled the end of resistance from West Indies as the rest of the batsmen could only manage 28 more runs. Jadeja finished with three wickets that also propped him up to the top of the ODI wicket-takers’ charts this year.Spin was thought to be a factor at the start of the match because of the presence of cracks on the pitch. West Indies chose to bat, hoping to build the pressure in a format they are more comfortable with. The change to coloured clothing was supposed to bring relief for Gayle, who had endured a difficult time in the Test series with a top score of 35. But he didn’t give himself a chance to settle. He dabbed the second delivery of the match towards the non-striker and called straightaway for a risky single. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has dismissed Gayle four times this year already, sprinted to his right, swiveled and threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s end, catching Gayle well short. But as Gayle tried to make his ground, he took a tumble and injured his hamstring that is likely to keep him out for up to four weeks.

Sangakkara, Russell power Jamaica into final

They will now play Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final on Saturday.Kumar Sangakkara, playing his first game for Jamaica, anchored the 149-run chase with a measured 50 not out, after the side lost captain Chris Gayle in the fourth over with just 16 runs on the board. The Sri Lanka batsman was involved in two crucial partnerships – the first a 71-run, second-wicket stand with Chadwick Walton, followed by a 30-run stand with Danza Hyatt, where Sangakkara kept pace with the scoring rate, even as his partner struggled to an 18-ball 12.Hyatt brought his labored innings to an end with a heave to long on into the hands of Barbados captain, Kieron Pollard. That brought Andre Russell to the crease. Jamaica needed 32 from 20 and the bowling side had an even chance of winning the game. What followed, however, was pure mayhem from Barbados’ point of view.Sangakkara and Russell needed just 11 balls to race past the target. Russell faced six of those and, in a fearsome batting display, ended up scoring 4, 1, 6, 6, 6, 6 off the six deliveries.Earlier, Barbados, who were put in to bat, put together a challenging total in spite of an indifferent start. David Bernard had Dwayne Smith trapped leg before at the start of the second over and Vernon Philander dismissed Jason Holder, promoted to No. 3, in the next over.Raymon Reifer and Shoaib Malik then added 102 runs for the third wicket, the first hundred-run stand in the CPL. Malik used his feet to play Jamaica’s spinners, stepping down the track to hit two sixes off Muttiah Muralitharan and Nikita Miller early on. Reifer, who had a slow start, gained confidence gradually and began playing his shots. The pair, however, were out off successive deliveries in the 17th over, bowled by Chris Gayle.Kieron Pollard and Azhar Mahmood hit some quick runs towards the end to help Barbados post a challenging total of 148 for 6.

Linhas defensivas exatamente iguais

Richard Ngarava defends five off last over as Zimbabwe clinch low-scorer

Ireland lose by three runs in chase of 118 despite Simi’s all-round contribution

Firdose Moonda27-Aug-2021Richard Ngarava defended five off the last over to give Zimbabwe a tense, three-run win in the series opener against Ireland. Zimbabwe have only defended one total lower than their 117 in Dublin today – 105 against West Indies in February 2010. The win was also Craig Ervine’s first as T20 captain. After a batting performance riddled with problems, with only Regis Chakabva scoring more than 20, Zimbabwe’s spinners Wellington Masakadza and Ryan Burl shared five wickets between them, and conceded just 40 runs, to keep Zimbabwe in the contest. Luke Jongwe took 2 for 17 to reduce Ireland to 88 for 7, leaving the eighth-wicket pair of Simi Singh and Barry McCarthy to finish the job.Ireland needed 18 runs off the last three overs, 12 off the last two and six off the final over, but Ngarava held his nerve at the end. His first ball was a yorker that Singh could not dig out, his second was quicker and Singh missed and his third was flicked away for one. With five needed off the last three, McCarthy walked across his stumps to try and ramp the ball over short fine leg but was bowled. Craig Young was run-out at the non-striker’s end off the penultimate ball before the last delivery, a low full-toss, cost just one run to give Zimbabwe victory.Young and carefree
Zimbabwe’s openers had a dismal start to the series and were both dismissed in the first 17 balls, playing lazy shots against a fired-up Craig Young. Wessley Madhevere was unable to build on his form from earlier in the year and the first to go, jabbing at the last ball of the opening opener, to give debutant Neil Rock his first (and what may end up being one of his easiest) catch in international cricket. After he had scored a single in the first over, Tadiwanashe Marumani looked like a sitting duck as he negotiated the second over from Barry McCarthy. He inside-edged the first ball, missed the next three and then finally found some defence to face a maiden. The pressure got to him and Marumani tried to get a move on when he danced down the track in an attempt to heave Young over the leg side, but the quick saw him coming, dragged the length back and had him caught at slip. Young’s opening spell yielded 2 for 5.Regal Regis
After the opening blunders, Regis Chakabhva helped Zimbabwe recover, sharing the best partnerships of the innings – 38 with Dion Myers and 30 with Craig Ervine. He gave Zimbabwe their most profitable over against Curtis Campher, who he pulled through midwicket, pounded through point and tucked down to fine leg for three boundaries in his first four balls. Campher’s first over in this format cost 16 runs all told. Chakabva’s best shot, however, was the six he hit off Singh, when he went down on one knee to send the spinner over midwicket. By then, Chakabva made sure Zimbabwe had a stable foundation at 79 for 4 in 12 over. But he didn’t read Singh’s wrong ‘un, in the 13th over, and was bowled. He would have been disappointed to fall one short of equalling his score in the format and three shy of a first T20I fifty.Simi Singh made inroads for Ireland•Sportsfile via Getty Images

Opening stand of two sides
Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien are at polar opposite places in terms of form and it showed. Stirling, who is coming off a tournament-winning knock in the Hundred, swept the third ball he faced over square leg for four. On the other hand, O’Brien, who has scored just two runs in his last three T20I innings, was tentative putting bat on ball. He was beaten four times by Ngarava’s first six balls and then watched Stirling flat-bat the first ball he faced from Tendai Chatara over point for four and cut the third one for four more.Stirling had scored 14 off 12 by the time O’Brien got his first run, a single off the ninth delivery he faced. Stirling then got two more boundaries, to deepen the difference between them. It was only after Stirling misjudged Jongwe’s length and was bowled that O’Brien found his stride. He hit Masakadza over extra cover for four for his first boundary in four matches. He found the rope two more times in his 32-ball innings.Burl brings Zimbabwe back

Stirling’s dismissal gave Zimbabwe an opportunity to fight their way back and they were able to, thanks largely to, their legspinner, Burl. He bowled with good pace and surprised captain Andy Balbirnie with a quick, flat delivery that pinned him on the front pad and then removed George Dockrell and O’Brien with successive balls to leave Ireland on 65 for 4. Dockrell was caught at long-off trying to clear the rope and O’Brien was bowled when he missed a ball that turned into him. The hat-trick delivery was to Campher, who managed a single but Burl had given Zimbabwe an opening. He finished with 3 for 22, by which time fellow spinner Masakadza had two wickets. Campher holed out to deep midwicket and Shane Getkate was caught reverse-sweeping, at third man.Singh almost seals it
Ireland needed 28 runs off 20 balls and needed to release pressure before the final three overs. Enter Singh. Fresh off a first ODI century against South Africa, Singh slapped Chatara behind point and then launched him onto the sightscreen to take 10 runs off the last two balls of the 17th over and bring the required run-rate down to a run a ball. He reduced it further when he hit a Ngarava full-toss to deep point and Chatara misfielded to give away four, but Zimbabwe barely put a step wrong after that.
