Pollard banking on local experience

Kieron Pollard believes that his team’s descent from hot favourites in the Caribbean Premier League to purported underdogs will work in their favour for Friday’s semi-final against the Jamaica Tallawahs

Kieron Pollard believes that his team’s descent from hot favourites in the Caribbean Premier League to purported underdogs will work in their favour for Friday’s semi-final against the Jamaica Tallawahs.Pollard’s Barbados Tridents were off to a flyer with four wins from four, despite criticism over Pollard’s form and nationality to lead the franchise. Famous for his T20 caliber, Pollard turned his disappointing form as captain of the West Indies versus the likes of Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka, into a high-octane steering of the Bajan franchise. However, three consecutive losses have pegged the early favourites back.”Everyone’s talking about the three losses but they seem to forget the first four wins,” Pollard said. “That’s how it goes. All we can do is go there, do the fundamentals right and play exciting cricket and we’ll take the title. We didn’t get as many stars joining our team as some of the other franchises but we know that with everyone else winning and riding into the semis, we’ll be underestimated and in the shadows. That’s exactly how I prefer it.”Jamaica v Barbados, 2nd semi-final, CPL

Stats and trivia
Shoaib Malik is the leading run-scorer for Tridents with 223 runs at a strike rate of 114.94
Tridents have three of the top four wicket-takers in the tournament (Shakib Al Hasan, Ashley Nurse and Rayad Emrit)
Tallawah’s Chris Gayle and Andre Russell have hit 11 sixes each. Only St Lucia’s Andre Fletcher has more (13)

A fiery Pollard admitted that he would have to step his batting game up as Umar Akmal returned to Pakistan after suffering seizures, and Jamaica beefed up their batting with the signing of Kumar Sangakkara in place of Ahmed Shehzad, who is back on national duty. Pollard confessed he has been waning at the crease recently but pointed to compatriots such as Rayad Emrit and Shannon Gabriel, whose familiarity with the Queen’s Park Oval could prove beneficial.Coach Desmond Haynes added that they were aware of Jamaica’s talismans, in captain Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Danza Hyatt, but was confident of the firepower in his team.”We know our backs are to the wall but that’s what makes us dangerous,” Haynes said. We’re going to take the CPL and pay some bills. Then next year, we’re going to repeat. We’ve got Dwayne Smith, Jason Holder and not to mention, Shoaib [Malik] so that’s a pretty solid structure right there. It’s a whole new ball game from here on.”Gayle, whose team has beaten Barbados in their lone encounter thus far, admitted that they were motivated because there was no real home factor in this semi-final. “I’d like to come out and show more of the form I’m in,” he said. “I’ve been getting off lately and our batters are really coming to the fore. I’d like to teach the Tridents that Gayle is the No. 1 captain in the Caribbean. We know this Oval pitch and I think we’ve got the right game plan. Whoever reads the pitch better will win and it looks like a 140 or 150 kind of wicket.”Jamaica coach Paul Nixon backed his captain up by pointing to their key weapon they are set to employ. “Muttiah Muralitharan is going to be pivotal,” he said. “He’s really been tormenting batsmen out here and I know it’s going to be a cracker. They have another eclectic spinner in Shakib [Al Hasan] but as evenly matched as it seems, I think Jamaica’s more hungry.”

Mathews wants SL youngsters to emulate seniors

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has backed young batsmen Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne to deliver in the home series against South Africa

Andrew Fidel Fernando17-Jul-2013Though Sri Lanka continue to perform satisfactorily in limited-overs tournaments, recent assignments in the Champions Trophy and the West Indies have helped make plain the challenges the side faces over the next two years. In both tournaments Sri Lanka leaned heavily on their experienced batsmen while the young talent largely failed to produce dividends for the considerable faith that has been afforded them.Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan were the team’s top scorers in the UK, with Lahiru Thirimanne, who made only 73 runs at 24.33, the best among the rest. Sangakkara and Jayawardene were also among Sri Lanka’s top scorers in the Caribbean, while Dilshan’s replacement Upul Tharanga led the list, thanks largely to a score of 174 not out.All three seniors privately hope to continue at the top level until at least the 2015 World Cup, but have maintained in public that their time in the game is largely subject to form and fitness. With all three over 35, the national selectors had embarked on building a team for the future, but with Sri Lanka’s young players unable to produce the kinds of innings their team can compile totals around, the home series against South Africa shapes as health-check for Sri Lankan cricket.”We’ve done well in patches in the last two months, and when we did that it was the seniors that stepped up – guys like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene,” captain Angelo Mathews said. “They’ve carried a lot of the burden and we need that experience in the side but what the youngsters need to do is look at how those guys prepare and how they focus and we all have to get that mindset right. It comes through experience, but the amount of matches the younger guys have played, they have some good experience now as well. We need to fine tune our performances.”We need to have that mindset where you think you can be the next Mahela and think you can be the next Kumar. It comes with experience and a lot of hard work.”Plenty is expected of Dinesh Chandimal and Thirimanne, and it is the former’s recent inability to make good on his initial limited-overs promise that has been most dispiriting for Sri Lanka’s future hopes. Chandimal averages 18.19 in the last 16 months since the tour of Australia, having hit only two fifties in 28 ODIs. He has been given a sustained run in the top order after becoming vice-captain in February, but his place in the side is in question even as he prepares for the prospect of captaining the team in the first two matches against South Africa, in Mathews’ absence due to an over-rate suspension.”We all know how good a cricketer Dinesh Chandimal is and he doesn’t become a bad player just because he has been unsuccessful in two tournaments – which can happen to any cricketer,” Mathews said. “He is the vice-captain and he deserves his place. I am sure he will be among the runs soon, and if the selectors make him captain, he will do it well.”Thirimanne has not yet made his place safe either, but he has produced promising innings in the recent tournaments, despite being the first batsman to be moved around the order as the team’s requirements change. His 57 in the Champions Trophy match against Australia set the foundation for Jayawardene’s sparkling innings, and a 46 in the tri-series final against India helped Sangakkara build what would become a competitive total.”Lahiru is one of our best up-and-coming players because he has never said no to anything. He always just gets on with the job even when it was hard work. We’ve sent him in when we were in trouble in England as well as in the West Indies, and he has responded brilliantly. He’s got great character, and we need that.”He has the potential to bat at number three in the long term. He has the composure, he’s very calm and he makes good decisions. He’s showed a lot of maturity and he’s got a long future. I’m sure he can be the next Sangakkara.”Mathews played himself into some form in the Caribbean and more confidence in both disciplines has had a positive impact on his captaincy, he said. Mathews averaged 49.66 with the bat and 17.57 with the ball in the tri-series.”When you’re contributing to the team in any way, that does a lot of good for your captaincy. As an allrounder, it’s especially good to get both wickets and runs and that helps you earn respect in the team as well.”

Miller six helps Jamaica to victory

Jamaica secured their place at the top of the points table at the end of the round-robin matches, scoring a five-wicket win against Combined Campuses and Colleges in Kingston

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Apr-2013
ScorecardJamaica secured their place at the top of the points table at the end of the round-robin matches, scoring a five-wicket win against Combined Campuses and Colleges in Kingston. Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller played a central role in the victory with a match haul of eight, including six in CCC’s second innings. He was well supported by debutant offspinner Jamie Merchant, who finished with five in the match. The pair, with help from the new-ball partnership of Sheldon Cotterrell and B Buchanan (playing only his second first-class game), helped restrict CCC to 150 after they had chosen to bat. The visitors made a fist of it by keeping Jamaica to an 88-run lead, with one of their two debutants, pace bowler Dawayne Sealy, picking up a five-for. However, the Miller-Merchant combine wreaked havoc in CCC’s second take, reducing them from 68 for no loss to 152 all out. That left Jamaica with a target of 65, and while they made heavy weather of it, they eventually got home in the 23rd over with half their wickets intact. They will now host Trinidad and Tobago in the semi-finals from May 2.

Well-prepped Oman primed to usher in new era against first-timers PNG

While PNG lost both their tournament warm-ups, the hosts had a decent build-up to their first game

Shashank Kishore16-Oct-2021

Big picture

October 17, 2021 promises to be the start of new things in Oman cricket. Until three months ago, the stadium in Al Amerat resembled a village ground with park benches to accommodate a few hundred people. On Sunday, the venue that was used as a recreational facility by morning and evening walkers from the neighbouring residential suburb, will witness history when Oman take on Papua New Guinea in the opening game of the T20 World Cup 2021, with 3000 fans expected to be in attendance apart from many others who will watch on TV.Oman’s players, most of whom play on the weekends away from their full-time jobs, spent their first four weeks in August “knocking off extra kilos” before trying to pack in as much cricket as they could to be match-ready for their second-ever big-tournament appearance. PNG, meanwhile, have endured a tough second wave of the pandemic. Having qualified for their first-ever World Cup, they want to use the tournament as a platform to bring smiles back on their people’s faces. After all, they will be playing in front of a televised audience back home for the first time. Ever.Related

Oman, the last team to qualify for this event after beating Hong Kong by 12 runs in a sudden-death playoff, have the confidence of beating Indian domestic powerhouses Mumbai 2-1 in the T20s in August. They also competed hard in the three 50-overs matches that followed, losing the series 2-1. They also competed well before going down to Sri Lanka in two T20s earlier this month.PNG too have had a decent build-up, having arrived in Oman early September. They have played eight ODIs in all, two each against USA and Nepal, apart from four World Cricket League Division 2 matches against Scotland and Oman. In between, they had two intense camps and have topped off their preparation by playing in two ICC warm-up games: they were toppled over easily by Ireland, who restricted them to 96 for 8 in the first. In their most-recent outing, they managed to give Sri Lanka a brief flutter before falling short by 39 runs chasing 163.

Players to watch

Kashyap Prajapati, a 26-year-old top-order batter, struck a 138-ball 146 in Oman’s total of 248 against Mumbai last month. The knock paved way for his international debut against PNG later in the month. Apart from offering explosive hitting ability up top, he is also a handy offspinner. Having arrived in the country from India, for work only recently, he has made heads turn in local cricket and is believed to be a clean striker. A T20 World Cup debut can top off what can best be described as a whirlwind journey so far.Tony Ura is PNG’s big-hitter at the top of the order•Peter Della Penna

Tony Ura is PNG’s rockstar. A big-hitter at the top of the order, he is also their leading run-scorer in T20Is, with 768 runs in 26 innings at an impressive strike rate of 140. He is PNG’s only T20I centurion, who also has four of the top five highest individual scores for the team.

Form guide

PNG lost both their tournament warm-ups, by eight wickets to Ireland and by 39 runs to Sri Lanka. They ran Namibia close in a T20I last week, eventually falling short by 14 runs in a tall chase of 175.Oman beat Namibia in their first warm-up and were in control of their chase of 162 against Netherlands before falling four short. Prior to that, they gave Sri Lanka a tough fight in the two T20s before going down.

Stats that matter

  • Assad Vala’s chart-topping 197 runs in eight innings at the T20 World Cup Qualifiers in 2019 is one of the reasons why PNG are in their first major ICC tournament. He also picked up ten wickets to go with all the runs he made.
  • Norman Vanua, the fast bowler, is PNG’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is with 35 strikes in 24 matches.
  • Oman left-arm fast bowler Bilal Khan, who began his first-class career with Peshawar in Pakistan, is the joint-sixth-fastest, along with Dale Steyn, to 50 T20I wickets. He got there in his 35th match. Ajantha Mendis, Imran Tahir, Rashid Khan, Mustafizur Rahman and Yuzvendra Chahal are in the top five. Eighteen of these wickets came in the World Cup Qualifiers two years ago.
  • Jatinder Singh, who was part of Oman’s historic first T20 World Cup win over Ireland five years ago, is their leading run-getter in T20Is, with 697 runs in 28 innings. Khawar Ali is second-best with 601 runs.

Quotes

“We believe in ourselves. We want to play to the best of our abilities. We want to express ourselves. We want to make it to the second round to test ourselves against the best teams in cricket. We don’t want this World Cup to be a one-off.”

Anyon and Magoffin tear Surrey apart

Sussex bounced back from consecutive Championship defeats by dominating the first day against Surrey at Horsham.

Sussex bounced back from consecutive Championship defeats by dominating the first day against Surrey at Horsham. The weather was dour as dark clouds scudded overhead throughout and brought a premature end to play shortly after tea. Yet in the 63.2 overs possible, the home side lifted the mood by dismissing Surrey for 124, before easing towards parity on the back of Luke Wells’ unbeaten 33.Given the big-brand hype that led the Jubilee jamboree all weekend, there was a refreshing understated-ness about festivities at Horsham. It is a club that pre-dates even the MCC but there was nothing old-fashioned about the pace of play as 12 wickets fell.It may all be a touch futile for Sussex if the forecasts prove correct but it was a heartening performance from a team that needed a boost. In their last game at Lord’s, Sussex lost much of the match on the first morning, shipping 5 wickets for 66 before lunch. Here, against another neighbourhood rival, roles were reversed.Steve Magoffin, in what could be his last game of the season for Sussex if Queensland have their way, and James Anyon took four wickets each as Surrey were unable to overcome the testing conditions. In a team packed with impulsive young players, Surrey had recalled 42-year-old Mark Ramprakash and stuck him in as opener. It was asking a lot at this stage, though Ramprakash will rue his luck having been left out of the side during the brief spell of sunshine the English summer has delivered. He struggled against Magoffin in particular and it was sadly inevitable when he feathered a good ball behind for 8. It was the sixth time this season he’d fallen in single figures. Meanwhile Sussex’s struggling veteran, Murray Goodwin, was dropped for the first time in his 11-year career at the club. Both are county giants who deserve to leave the game on a high but neither may get the chance. At least Ramprakash can claim to have been got out. His opening partner, Jason Roy, gifted his wicket before him, toe-ending a golf-swing to mid-on for 11. Zander de Bruyn and Rory Hamilton-Brown fell in successive deliveries to James Anyon and when Steven Davies was smartly snaffled by a diving Wells at second slip Surrey had lost three wickets in seven balls.Maynard responded with the kind of gung-ho zeal that has characterised his season, clumping three boundaries and running positively, but fell just before he could inflict meaningful damage, edging Anyon behind for 17.Though Anyon and Magoffin had equal success, Magoffin was the better of the two. He may lack Anyon’s pace but compensates with consistent bounce and hostile accuracy. With Naved Arif, Anyon and backup Amjad Khan all profligate types, Magoffin’s miserliness would be missed. At 52 for 6, Surrey looked in danger of subsiding below 100 but the tail rallied through Gareth Batty, John Lewis and Murali Kartik. They added 69 between them, Batty top-scoring with 32, before Sussex mopped things up after lunch. It may be that among the glittering shot-makers, Surrey need to buy some grit from somewhere.Though 124 looked grim, the ball had done enough to give Surrey’s strong pack of pacemen plenty reason for hope. Throughout the season Surrey have fought back from adversity. Despite Ed Joyce swishing outside off to fall cheaply, however, the visitors couldn’t make significant inroads this time.Instead Wells, returning to the side after being dropped for Luke Wright’s return, calmly – and at times elegantly – dented the edge off Surrey’s attack. He left well when he needed to and drove crisply when invited, and together he and Chris Nash shared a 69-run stand for the second wicket. Despite the drizzle that stalked the day, Surrey’s bowlers couldn’t extract much and it was a shock when Nash donated his wicket to Kartik, swinging against the spin to end caught at point for 38. Perhaps he felt a touch chilly. If he had just waited another four balls, though, he could have returned to the pavilion with his wicket intact. The rain set in once more and that was it for the day.

Yuvraj back in India after completion of cancer treatment

Yuvraj Singh, the India allrounder, is back in the country after two and a half months in the USA, where he had received treatment for cancer

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Apr-2012Yuvraj Singh, the India allrounder, is back in the country after two and a half months in the USA, where he had received treatment for cancer. Yuvraj arrived in Delhi on Monday morning, and was received by his mother and several fans.Yuvraj was diagnosed with a type of cancer called “mediastinal seminoma”, a germ-cell tumour located between his two lungs, in February. He underwent three sessions of chemotherapy in Indianapolis, at the IU Simon Cancer Centre at the Indiana University Medical Centre, under Lawrence H Einhorn, who headed the treatment of cycling champion Lance Armstrong in 1996. He finished the last cycle of chemo in mid-march, and his response it had left his medical team “fairly confident” that he would not suffer a relapse. He had spent a few days in London while recuperating from the side effects of the treatment. He arrived on a Jet Airways flight, sporting a red sports cap – he has suffered hair loss, a common side effect of chemo – and flashing a victory sign to the waiting crowds. A friend who was with Yuvraj in London said the cancer is “completely out of his system”, reported. Yuvraj had tweeted about his homecoming on Sunday. While in the USA, where he was since the last week of January, Yuvraj had done as much gym work and played pool as was physically possible during his treatment. He will hold a press conference on Wednesday, to presumably talk about his treatment and his comeback plan.
