Everton warm to Juventus loan for troubled Moise Kean

Time could be up for Moise Kean to prove himself at Goodison Park after reports emerged claiming Everton have warmed to loaning the troubled striker back his former side Juventus.

What’s the word?

According to Corriere Torino, via Sport Witness, Everton are now open to loaning Kean back to Juventus having backtracked on their stance that the 20-year-old would not be leaving Merseyside this summer unless in a permanent deal.

The Toffees drew the line on Kean’s future at a permanent deal aimed at recouping the club’s losses, having spent an initial £25.1million rising to £27.5m on the Vercelli-born forward who has failed to establish himself at Goodison Park since.

Juventus have been eager to land a reunion for the forward all window but have been clear throughout the market in that Andrea Pirlo’s outfit do not have the assets to satisfy the Blues’ demands at present. Kean, likewise, is understood to be desperate to return to the Allianz Stadium after a troubled debut season in England.

But progress could be on the cards, as the latest word from Italy is that Everton are now open minded to sending Kean back to Turin on a two-year deal providing they receive guarantees of a €25m (£22.6m) fee in the future.

Juventus are not yet thought to have responded to Everton’s offer, although with both the player and club keen to secure a deal, progress will likely come fast approaching Monday’s Deadline Day.

Time to part ways

Kean arrived on Merseyside last summer as a highly-rated prospect but already with a troubled past, having been punished by Italy U21 coach Gigi Di Biagio in April 2019 for missing training sessions ahead of a crunch fixture with Belgium.

That failed to persuade Everton Director of Football Marcel Brands and former head coach Marco Silva that the forward would be an ill-advised addition to the Portuguese’s squad, but issues settling into life at Goodison Park led to suggestions he was being mishandled by the 43-year-old.

Issues, however, remained off the field for Kean and Silva was left in a position where he felt the striker had to be left at home when Everton travelled to Southampton after arriving late for team meetings on multiple occasions.

Even once Silva was sacked and replaced by Carlo Ancelotti, Kean remained a troubled aspect of the Toffees’ first-team and left the Goodison Park outfit “appalled” when images emerged of the 20-year-old hosting a party at his apartment during lockdown in April.

No side willing to pay circa-£25m for Kean this summer may have kept the Italy international in England thus far, but a loan with an obligation to buy must be considered acceptable for a player who causes a magnitude of issues without impressing on the field.

Kean has played a total of 13 minutes, all from the bench, in the Premier League this season and was omitted from the matchday squad when Everton beat West Ham United 4-1 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

7 Most Surprising 2019/20 PL Season Stats

The 2019/20 Premier League season was unprecedented in both length and deed, lasting for nearly a whole year and delivering Liverpool a maiden PL-era championship. Correspondingly, the Premier League’s 28th edition produced some truly surprising stats.

4th placed Chelsea conceded the same goals tally as 15th placed Brighton

Frank Lampard’s first season as Chelsea boss can go down as a reasonable success, particularly in the context of the transfer ban that dogged them last summer.

The Blues are once again in the Champions League, with the arrivals of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech expected to restore their status as genuine title contenders in 2020/21, as will be reflected in pre-season soccer betting outrights for the upcoming PL campaign.

Nonetheless, the defence has been left with a lot of soul searching to do, with 54 goals against equating to 1.42 goals conceded per game. Away from home, Chelsea notably recorded just one clean sheet across the entire campaign – two fewer awayday shutouts than bottom-placed Norwich!

Five teams below Chelsea lost fewer home games than them

Chelsea’s woes do not end with the backline, and alarms have also been rightly raised over the club’s home form.

Back in the 2000s, during Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea heyday, Stamford Bridge was a fortress considered impregnable. Notably, the Blues once went 86 home games unbeaten between 2004 and 2008, but those days are a distant memory.

Bournemouth, West Ham and Southampton memorably left Stamford Bridge with three points and a clean sheet apiece back in the winter. The other two winning visitors were Liverpool and Manchester United, with whom Chelsea should theoretically be on equal terms.

That return of five home defeats also equalled the tally sustained by Chelsea in 2015/16, when the Blues finished tenth, for the club’s worst finish in two decades.

6th placed Tottenham won as many away games as relegated Bournemouth.

Speaking of underachieving London clubs, Tottenham also take an unwanted spotlight, after recording their lowest points tally since the 2008/09 campaign. If that is not surprising enough, then the fact that they travelled as well as a relegated club certainly is.

Perhaps most alarming is the speed at which Tottenham have slipped down the ‘away table’ over the past two years.

At the start of 2018, Tottenham were the kings of the road, taking 18 away points from a possible 24 between 23 December 2017 and 7 April 2018. They did so through a rigorous counter-attacking setup designed to stretch host teams who were duty-bound to attack.

Sadly for the Lilywhites, similar devastation was not forthcoming in the 2019/20 away campaign.

Amongst Tottenham’s most chastening results away from home included a 3-1 drubbing at an empty Bramall Lane, preceded by goalless defeats at Southampton and Brighton, the latter of which ended a humiliating 3-0, with a relatively unknown rookie Seagull named Aaron Connolly scoring a brace.

Tim Krul pulled off the second-highest number of saves across the season.

Natural logic leads many people to assume that a relatively low tally in the ‘goals against’ column equates to a fantastic shot stopper in the nets. However, that is not necessarily true.

After a one-sided finale against Liverpool, Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka had the accolade of pulling off the highest number of saves, as recognised by the official FPL game. Yet, despite his heroics, the Magpies ended 2019/20 with the second-worst goal difference amongst surviving bottom-half teams.

In second place, surprisingly, was Tim Krul – even though basement club Norwich City ended the campaign with a goal difference of -49, and 75 goals conceded.

Man City attained the highest aggregate PL win over a single team.

It is well-known that Watford are a repeat victim of Manchester City’s savage attacking ways.

Successive home defeats by 5+ goals without reply back in 2017, alongside the biggest FA Cup final landslide of post-war times last May, and an 8-0 thrashing at the Etihad Stadium back in September, stand as most prominent in that regard.

While the 4-0 victory City attained at Vicarage Road in July might have been comparatively gentle, it still brought the aggregate H2H scoreline for last season to 12-0. That was enough to beat the existing PL record of 12-1, as set by Blackburn (vs Nottingham Forest) back in 1995/96.

City’s feat also represents a new Premier League record for a clean-sheet aggregate win, breaking the one set by Liverpool back in 2001/02, when the Reds thrashed relegation-bound Ipswich 11-0 over two very mismatched encounters.

Sheffield United lost as many home games after a level half-time score as Norwich.

If ever there was a byword for disciplined defending and great persistence in the face of a small budget, it is Sheffield United.

Regardless of the opposition, the Blades’ plan was always to contain initially and then strike efficiently. That covers much of the fact that they were level at half-time in 11 of 19 home games. However, they ended up losing on four such occasions (36.36% of the time), implying that it is far from a bulletproof strategy.

This statistic is made all the more shocking by their home form, as it stood prior to the 1-0 defeat against Everton on 20 July.

Immediately prior to that loss, a 3-0 win over Chelsea had marked their first completion of a six-game unbeaten home run in the Premier League since the spring of 1994. Across the five wins in that six-game sequence, Sheffield had averaged exactly two goals per match.

Wolves won more games after losing at HT than the bottom nine combined.

In addition to seeing one of their own (Conor Coady) lose the lowest average of aerial duels amongst centre-backs, Wolves won a league-high four times after trailing at the break. Impressively, three of those four victories came on the road, fully illustrating Wolves’ fearless nature under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Also significant is the fact that the first three of those comeback wins were concentrated inside a four-week period spanning December to January.

Furthermore, two of those four wins came against Manchester City and Tottenham – two of six teams considered amongst something of an ‘elite’ division within the top flight.

Liverpool: Fans delighted with AFCON decision which impacts Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita

Liverpool have been given a huge boost as the defending champions prepare for the 2020/21 Premier League season.Â

The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been postponed to 2022, as reported by James Pearce on Twitter, which means that the Reds will be able to keep many of their biggest stars for the entire campaign.

AFCON was set be held from early January 2021 in CameroonÂand the tournament could have caused major disruption to Jurgen Klopp’s plans, as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were ready to represent Senegal and Egypt respectively, while Naby Keita would have been away on international duty with Guinea.

However, the competition has been delayed for another year in response to the coronavirus crisis, which will allow Klopp to keep all of his key players ahead of a busy schedule.

Cameroon were set to host the event even though they were stripped of the 2019 tournament. They are now expected to resume their responsibilities when the games start in 2022.

Unsurprisingly, loads of LFC fans gushed over Pearce’s “brilliant news” with one supporter describing the announcement as “gargantuan” while another feels that it is “great” for the club.

Wellington Silva cobra recuperação do Flu no Campeonato Brasileiro

– Faltavam sete rodadas e agora seis.

Agora, vamos pensar no Palmeiras.

Liverpool see Sander Berge bid rejected, our writers deliver their verdicts

The transfer window is just around the corner, and the rumours are beginning to hot up.

Liverpool spent just £1.71m during the summer, and it seems to have been enough so far as they lead the way in the Premier League. However, as they make that second-half surge towards their first title in 30 years, they may need some reinforcements.

Defensive midfield could be one of the areas that is in need of a new recruit considering that Fabinho is out of action until the New Year, and if the latest reports are to be believed, Genk’s Sander Berge is on their radar. The Reds have already faced the Norway international twice this term, in the Champions League, and Jurgen Klopp was even said to have been particularly impressed with the 21-year-old. Not only that, they are even said to have had a €15m (£12.6m) bid rejected for him.

But do Liverpool actually even need him? We ask a selection of Football FanCast writers to find out.

Viji Jeevathayalan

“Standing at an imposing 6 foot 5, Sander Berge is a midfield giant. Operating in that holding role, the Norwegian has proven himself to be defensively strong, and equally metronomic with his passing. In the Champions League this season, the 21-year-old has averaged 1.8 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game, whilst his passing accuracy is up at an impressive 82%.

“Whilst Liverpool haven’t exactly missed Fabinho since he was ruled out until at least the New Year with an injury, it does raise some serious questions about their squad depth in that key anchorman role. Jamie Carragher hailed the Brazilian as the best in the Premier League in his position earlier in the season, and it goes to show how highly-rated the former AS Monaco man has become. If the Reds were to suffer more bad luck on the injury front when it comes to the 26-year-old, they may rue potentially not signing a replacement. Berge’s stats proves he would be the perfect cover for Fabinho.”

Domagoj Kostanjsak

“Sander Berge is one of the hottest prospects on the market currently and given Liverpool don’t really have natural replacements for Fabinho in the middle of the park, scooping up the young midfielder before someone else does sounds like a good plan.

“At this point, I’d actually say that he would be a necessary buy for Klopp. Depth wins you silverware and even though Liverpool have an incredible team, Berge could boost a somewhat sore area of the squad. If they can get him, it’s a no-brainer for me.”

Real Reds will get full marks: Take the ultimate Liverpool quiz below…

Danny Lewis

“Given the plethora of midfield options Liverpool already have at their disposal, it can be argued that they don’t necessarily need Berge. However, it will still be useful to sign him during the January transfer window, as he can be another body to battle for a place in the midfield. This will also be especially beneficial from the 21-year-old’s point of view.

“There will likely be plenty of games to be played, meaning he can be used at various points within the second half of the campaign and embedded into the team. This is also a squad that is currently excelling, as signified by the fact they are eight points ahead at the top of the Premier League and suffering from a build-up of fixtures. Being involved with a team like that can only do him good.”

Jack Saville

“It’s easy to understand why Liverpool are expressing an interest in Sander Berge but his talent would be wasted at Anfield. He’s effectively a Fabinho 2.0 but that’s exactly where the problem lies – there is only enough room for one player of the Brazilian’s ilk within the squad. Naturally, Liverpool may be tempted to move for the Norweigan in January during Fabinho’s absence, but that type of short-term thinking could be detrimental for the player’s development.

“At this stage in his career Berge needs to find a club who can guarantee him regular minutes, and Liverpool are unlikely to be able to offer that while the former Monaco metronome resides within the squad.”
