West Ham fans blast Cresswell vs Burnley

Some West Ham United fans were left blasting the display of Aaron Cresswell despite their 1-0 win over Burnley in the Premier League yesterday afternoon.Although there were certainly some standout performances for David Moyes’ team, including Michail Antonio who scored the winning goal inside the opening 10 minutes on the day, the performance of Cresswell flattered to deceive some members of the London Stadium faithful. The 31-year-old did put the ball in his own net only for VAR to rule the goal out for an offside in the build-up, and he was also guilty of losing possession of the ball no fewer than 17 times in the game, the joint-third most out of any of his teammates (Sofascore). He also lost out on three of his duels, and failed to record a single dribble, tackle, key pass or accurate cross (Sofascore). Report: Liverpool submit offer to David Alaba %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Many Liverpool fans reacted in delight over a transfer update regarding Bayern Munich midfielder David Alaba.

According to Goal journalist Romeo Agresti (via Anfield Edition), the Reds have submitted a contract worth in the region of £9m a year in line to a free transfer in the summer, with his Bavarian contract due to expire at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

If this deal was to go through, the Austria international will reunite with his former teammate Thiago Alcantara – who left the Bundesliga champions to join Jurgen Klopp’s side for £20m.

Alaba has been hugely successful with Bayern, winning nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues with over 400 appearances to his name (TransferMarkt).

In light of Liverpool’s catastrophic injury crisis at the back, with both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out for a significant time, supporters were keen to see Alaba in a red shirt as soon as possible.

Spurs could find their own Timo Werner in reported target Marcus Forss

An interesting name has emerged as a potential long-term striking target for Tottenham Hotspur this week…

What’s the word?

According to Eurosport’s Dean Jones, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is eyeing up a move for Brentford forward Marcus Forss as the 21-year-old goalscoring sensation is attracting interest from several elite clubs, including Borussia Dortmund.

It’s claimed that the Finland international is quickly becoming one of the EFL’s most talented starts, which is an opportunity the tough-negotiating Levy does not want to pass on.

Spurs’ own Werner?

Forss is quite the enigma. He’s started just five matches in all competitions and has scored seven goals. In the Championship alone, he has managed a goal every 69 minutes, per Transfermarkt.

Originally seen as a back-up to £5m summer signing Ivan Toney, the Bees have now started him in their last two league outings, pairing him up with the former Peterborough monster.

David Ornstein at The Athletic has also reported on the Bundesliga giant’s interest in Forss, claiming that there is something Jamie Vardy-like about his physique, movement and finishing.

Forss has even been likened to Erling Haaland as a ‘fox in the box’ who is hard-working and is truly efficient with what touches he does get with the ball, so perhaps it’s not a shock to see why Dortmund might be keen on his services.

Indeed, the combination of the above could also point towards the 21-year-old prodigy being that of a Timo Werner type as if you were to remove the names above, then the ex-Leipzig man would undoubtedly be one of your first guesses.

This is further compounded by Breaking The Lines’ analysis of the Bees striker, who said: ‘Forss also excels at creating space for his teammates via his intelligent movement and quick lay-off passes.’

Back in November 2019, fresh off a successful loan spell with AFC Wimbledon, former Brentford B head coach Kevin O’Connor told Sky Sports:

“Once we got him up to match speed, especially for the B Team, you could see his quality; you could see straight away that he was a finisher and had very good ability with both feet. I think it was only a matter of time before he got in and around the first-team squad.

“He can hold the ball up, he can spin, he’s strong and when he gets half a chance, I expect him to score. He’s clever; he aims for the defender’s legs. He shifts the ball, waits for them to shift their legs and then always shoots in between their legs so the ‘keepers can’t even react. He’s a very intelligent striker in his finishing.”

Forss is even now reaping the rewards on the international stage as he downed 2018 World Cup winners France during the recent break, which can be witnessed here.

He ransacked Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko before rampaging through to fire past a helpless Steve Mandanda.

The modern game now, especially at an elite level, requires forwards like a Werner, a Haaland or Vardy, and that’s something very different to Harry Kane, so Levy must do all he can to land the impressive goalscorer in 2021.

Aston Villa: Jack Grealish admits embracing ‘pressure’ at Villa Park

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has opened up on what it’s like being the skipper of his boyhood club and his thoughts on signing a new five-year deal at Villa Park.

The 25-year-old was instrumental at the weekend as Dean Smith’s side thumped Premier League champions Liverpool 7-2, scoring twice and providing three assists during the 90 minutes in a sensational result at Villa Park.

Sunday’s game capped off what has been a wonderful few months for Grealish, having recently signed a new contract with Villa and being selected to play for England once again after making his Three Lions debut last month.

The club have also made moves in the transfer market, bringing in Chelsea’s Ross Barkley on loan until the end of the season to add strength in depth to the midfield.

Despite this, Grealish told Standard Sport that he doesn’t think about pressure at Villa negatively. “I think it’s a good thing to have and there is only one reason why you would have a lot of pressure on yourself,” he said.

“I always put a lot of pressure on myself to perform. Me being the captain, the local lad at Villa, there is a fair bit on me. This is all I’ve wanted to do my whole life.”

Grealish went on to talk about what he felt was best for him at this stage of his career, saying: “Staying at Villa was the best thing for me. I’ve had a lot of pressure. It is something that I thrive off and I enjoy.”

These comments could really please Villa fans. Grealish is not just another player in the first team that will come and go in a few years – he evidently adores this football club.

Being called up to play for the national team is the least that the Villa skipper deserves. The fact that he chose to stay in the Midlands, having been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, is enough to delight the Villa Park faithful. This is the icing on the cake.

Villa head into the international break in an extraordinarily healthy position – unbeaten in the Premier League with a 100% record, beating last season’s champions and with their captain signing a new deal.

It’s a good time to be a Villa fan. With a long journey ahead of them this season, it will be interesting to see whether they can keep this up until May.

Rangers fans slam Ianis Hagi’s display against Hibernian

They may have continued their unbeaten streak, but Rangers will surely feel their 2-2 draw against Hibernian on Sunday was two dropped points.

The Gers enjoyed 70% of the possession at Easter Road, and took 12 more total shots than the home side (19-7). And yet, even despite the dominance, they couldn’t convert their opportunities in front of goal, and a couple of defensive lapses at the other end cost them big time.

Are you a massive Rangers fan? Know everything about the club? Well do you know your Gary Stevens from your Michael Ball? This quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And whilst Ianis Hagi played a key part in Scott Arfield’s lovely team goal, the Romanian struggled to impose him on the game, and ended up losing six of his nine total duels.

After seeing his performance, Rangers fans took to Twitter to share their reactions about the attacker.

A couple of Rangers fans insisted Hagi was miles off the pace, and urged Gerrard during the game to take him off.

The 21-year-old has scored just the once in nine games for Rangers this season, and there’s no doubt Steven Gerrard’s side need a lot more from the talented Romanian.

Getting him to be consistent even during a game could be key to whether the Gers can finally lift the league title, and if he can add goals to his locker like his manager did, then the Ibrox side will fancy their chances of ending their long wait.

Everton news: Toffees star emerges as Fenerbahce transfer target

It has been a couple of years since Cenk Tosun first joined Everton in the January transfer window of 2018.

Of course, the road has been quite rocky but the Turkish international has managed to record 51 appearances for the Toffees, bagging ten goals and assisting one in the process as well. But now, according to a Turkish outlet Sporx (via Inside Football), the 29-year-old striker is a wanted man as Fenerbahce look to lure him back to the country.

Of course, before heading to the Premier League, Tosun was actually playing for Fenerbahce’s rivals, Besiktas, so this would certainly make for an interesting transfer should it really go through.

The same outlet, however, claims the Turkish outfit are actually looking for a replacement for Lazio linked Vedat Muriqi. If the player does move to Italy, they will certainly need someone to plug that hole and they have identified Everton’s ace to be the right man for the job.

Muriqi himself has been making headlines recently due to his excellent debut season in Turkey. He managed to score 15 goals and provide a total of six assists across 32 league games. For that reason, Tosun would indeed have some big shoes to fill should he really make the move in the end.

At the moment, the same source claims, the 29-year-old would indeed prefer to stay at Everton, seeing how there are two years left on his current contract, but Fenerbahce are hoping for a change of heart sooner rather than later.

Only time will tell though.

Verdict

Carlo Ancelotti does have some quality personnel upfront and maybe losing Tosun wouldn’t exactly be such a blow to the Toffees. Of course, it all depends on whether the price is right and whether they can then use that money to potentially strengthen elsewhere.

With the new season just around the corner and the Premier League as competitive as ever, even the slightest advantage can make all the difference in the world.

Who is Gonzalo Montiel? – Profile

Name: Gonzalo Montiel

Club: River Plate

Date of Birth: 1 January 1997

Position: Right-back, right midfielder

GONZALO MONTIEL – HIS CAREER SO FAR

Even though he is only 23 years of age, Gonzalo Montiel is already starting to attract interest from teams from abroad. Of course, nowadays, 23 might already be old for a young talent on the rise but the Argentine is slowly but surely making his mark known in the world of football. For the entirety of his still short career, Montiel has been playing for River Plate and River Plate only.

His youth career started at the club and after successfully rising through the ranks and impressing the right people in the right places, the defender has managed to ensure his place in the historic club’s senior squad. His first-team journey began back in 2016 when he was 19 years of age and it’s safe to say that he hasn’t looked back since.

Fast forward a couple of years into the future and Montiel is not only an important member of the squad but has also registered 91 appearances for the club, scoring one goal and assisting seven in the process as well. Of course, it was never actually his job to rattle the inside of the opposition’s net but he does seem to have some predispositions for attacking play too.

It should also not be forgotten that he has also featured for his country as well, tallying two appearances for Argentina’s U20 squad before being named in the senior squad for friendly clashes against Venezuela and Morocco by coach Lionel Scaloni. Soon afterwards, on 22 March, Montiel finally got his senior bow against Venezuela and has since recorded three more appearances as well – one against Morocco, one against Chile and one against Mexico, all in friendly games.

Now, after spending years at River Plate, he is seemingly set to leave the club and the country for greener pastures in Europe. With only a solitary year left on his contract, Montiel is suddenly a very attractive option for some Premier League outfits.

TRANSFER LATEST

According to the latest transfer news, Montiel is a wanted man and West Ham United are one of the teams looking to take the young defender to London. However, the Hammers’ initial bid seems to have been rejected by River Plate and they will have to increase the offer if they are really to land the 23-year-old’s signature.

David Moyes seems adamant on improving his defence but the money is also tight. Still, big talents rarely come for cheap and if the transfer rumours are to be believed, Montiel, albeit with a single year on his contract, might not be any different as well.

PLAYER PROFILE

Montiel is a right-back by trade but he seems to be willing to venture higher up the pitch and can also be utilised as a wing-back or even a right midfielder if needed. This is mostly due to his tendency to oversee the whole flank and assist his team in the advanced areas of the pitch. Due to his good positioning and understanding of when and where to move, the 23-year-old is a great asset in the final third.

That is where he can combine with his teammates quite well because of an impressive passing range and an eye for a good and penetrative ball into the danger areas. But we shouldn’t disregard his defensive duties and abilities. He seems like an intelligent defender who knows when to engage his marker and when to lure them into a trap. Overall, Montiel is solid in performing the tasks that are asked of him and can undoubtedly improve to become a great player.

Portsmouth: Pursuit of Scottish striker comes to an end

Portsmouth have ended their pursuit of Dunfermline Athletic striker Kevin Nisbet, according to Portsmouth News who spoke with manager Kenny Jackett.

Jackett’s side are said to have been monitoring the prolific striker over the course of the 2019/2020 season and a potential move had developed after seeing him net an impressive 18 goals in 25 games in the Scottish Championship.

Nisbet, who was born in Glasgow, joined Dunfermline last summer after having a handful of mixed spells with the likes of East Stirlingshire, Ayr United, Dumbarton and Raith Rovers.

Declaring their interest in the young striker, Portsmouth were also been joined by a number of Scottish sides looking to seal his signature.

Impressing in Scotland’s second tier and with said offers on the table to remain in his homeland, it now looks increasingly likely that he will do just that after Jackett spoke about the interest.

Speaking to the Portsmouth News, Jackett said: “We were asked about him [Nisbet] last year. We’ve got strikers on contracts here anyway.

“If we’re looking at Ryan Williams, Marcus Harness, Ellis Harrison, Reeco Hackett-Fairchild, John Marquis and Ronan Curtis – there’s six forwards there for our front three positions.

“All of them are under contract for the next year, so it’s not an area we’re necessarily looking at now.”

Pompey boss Jackett will be fully focused on his side’s next game, facing Oxford United in the League One play-off semi-final in the coming weeks.

Jackett’s comments all-but rule out a move for Nisbet and rightly so. The Pompey boss has plenty of options available to him at the moment and his prime objective is to attempt a promotion to the Championship.

Nisbet has performed well in the Scottish second flight this season but Portsmouth could look to a more established and experienced front man if they go up a division.
