Sunderland fans react as Honeyman is cleared to play at Wembley

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Sunderland fans have been reacting to a hugely significant club update, as captain George Honeyman will be allowed to play in the Checkatrade Trophy final at Wembley.

Duncan Watmore scored four minutes into stoppage time to rescue a point for Sunderland at Wycombe on Saturday, but it was what took place after the goal that has really got people talking.

A bench-clearing brawl resulted in red cards for Honeyman and the Chairboys’ Nathan Tyson, while Marcus Bean was dismissed a couple of minutes later for picking up a second yellow card.

Honeyman was handed a three-game ban for the incident, which was originally set to rule him out of the Checkatrade final vs Portsmouth, but he will now be allowed to play at Wembley.

The Black Cats appealed the ban, and while the appeal was unsuccessful, the ban will now only apply to league games, a club statement confirmed.

Darren Moore pours cold water on extended stay for Oliver Burke

[ad_pod ]

Darren Moore has dismissed the rumour that Celtic have an option to buy Oliver Burke at the end of his loan spell.

The 21-year-old has made an instant impact since moving north, playing a lead role as Celtic returned from their winter break with five successive wins.

Burke has been converted into a striker by Brendan Rodgers and although he has only scored twice he has added a powerful, pacey edge to Celtic’s play.

His impact has inevitably raised the question of the move becoming permanent with the player diplomatically answering that issue at a media conference on Monday.

Loan players have to tread a careful line of respecting both their loan and parent clubs when asked about the future, with Burke pleased to be getting game time working under a progressive, respected manager.

Burke’s comments were relayed back to Moore but the West Brom boss offered Celtic no encouragement over a permanent move.

“Not that I know of no, if there is it’s something between Celtic and our board of directors,” 44-year-old Moore is quoted by the Birmingham Mail as saying amid talk of the loan becoming permanent.

“As far as we are concerned we sent Oli up there to get some games, to play at a level that we thought was right for him.

“We couldn’t [have] thought of anywhere better for him, the opportunity of Celtic coming in for him and working under the manager up there, that would help him develop to get him to where we think he should be.

“He is a young player that the football club has invested in, he is a West Bromwich Albion player and until told otherwise, the agreement is he goes up there on loan in an idea of playing games.

“Hopefully we get him back in the summer and see a more rounded Oli Burke because of the matches he has played. If that happens it’s a massive tick for us, a massive tick for Celtic and a massive tick for Oli Burke.”

Before leaving the Midlands Burke had barely featured in the Championship, but he’s already become a prominent figure in Rodgers’ Celtic side.

Spurs fans react to links with Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho

After missing out on his signing last summer, it appears Tottenham are intent on getting Philippe Coutinho at the second time of asking.

Reports suggested that the north London side were interested in taking him from Barcelona the previous year, but a deal failed to materialise, with the Brazilian play-maker instead making a season-long loan switch to the Bundesliga to join Bayern Munich.

But now, The Daily Mirror claim Spurs are once again interested in signing Coutinho, and could hold an advantage over rivals Chelsea if they are prepared to include an obligation to buy.

After hearing about their latest links to the former Liverpool star, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their potential summer target.

A couple of Spurs fans seemed to suggest that there are far more important positions for the club to be concerned about.

Based on his performances this season, Spurs dodged a very expensive bullet by missing out on Coutinho last summer.

Committing vast sums of money both in terms of wages and then a potential fee would be a questionable way of trying to reinforce the positions that need strengthening at Spurs.

Jose Mourinho will surely be looking at a back-up striker for Harry Kane, whilst a goalkeeper may be on the agenda too. Getting their priorities sorted out first should be the main area for focus.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to links with this Eredivisie ace.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford slammed by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Leeds lost 1-0 to QPR on Saturday, but it all could have been so much different.

Once again, United dominated possession, but they couldn’t make it count as their poor run extended to just one win in their last seven league games.

QPR’s goal came in controversial circumstances as Nahki Wells handled the ball before netting, but Leeds should have equalised soon after that.

Indeed, The Whites had a huge chance to level the game in the first half, but it was squandered, and a former Leeds star believes that there’s only one man to blame for United failing to find the net.

What’s been said then?

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink pulled no punches when talking about Patrick Bamford’s miss in the first half.

Bamford was one on one with the keeper, and despite the stopper being in no man’s land the former Middlesbrough forward couldn’t put his shot on target.

“Bamford, he will be really disappointed with it, because this is actually a very simple chance,” Hasselbaink said on Sky Sports’ coverage of Leeds vs QPR (18/1/20 1:20PM)

“The goalkeeper makes it easy for him, and he makes up his mind, but the execution is poor. He should do exactly what he was trying to do, but the execution should be better.”

Difference between three points

Bamford’s failure to do his job on Saturday was the difference between zero points and three.

The striker not only failed to convert the above chance though, as he also saw a penalty saved in the second half as well.

United apparently want to sign a striker this month, and it can’t come soon enough as Bamford is once again proving that he can’t be relied upon if United are serious about reaching the Premier League.

Hasselbaink is absolutely right to slam Bamford for that miss, and we can only hope that this acts as a bit of a wake-up call for the attacker.

Leeds need him fit and firing, especially now he’s the sole senior striker left at the club.

In other news, Phil Hay has revealed that one Leeds target has already been training at Thorp Arch this week.

Arsenal weigh up bid for Legia Warsaw goalkeeper

As January approaches so does the need for Premier League club’s to strengthen their squads as they enter the crucial second-half of the season.

Arsenal are coming off two losses after losing to Spurs and Southampton which ended their 22-game unbeaten run. In both of those games, Arsenal didn’t play well and combined with the number of injuries, especially in defence, Unai Emery needs to reinvest into the squad in January.

According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal are tracking Legia Warsaw goalkeeper, Radoslaw Majecki.

The Breakdown

Bern Leno seems to be entrenched as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper under Emery. Petr Cech did hold the role at the beginning of the season but following his injury, Emery switched to the former Bayer Leverkusen man due to his ability with the ball at his feet.

It’s been a fairly average tenure for Cech at Arsenal. At times he’s proven to be a strong presence in goal but at others he has been a slight liability for the Gunners. His current deal runs out at the end of the season and it is yet unsure if Arsenal will offer him a new contract extension.

Cech has only made 11 appearances in the league this season and if his playing time continues to diminish he may indeed look to move away rather than staying at Arsenal.

The deal for Majecki seems to be one for the future and it could see Emiliano Martinez promoted to the second-choice position. On the face of it, it seems Cech’s career at Arsenal could well be coming to an end.

Talking Tactics: Klopp finally has a bench worth using at Liverpool

As Jurgen Klopp’s third anniversary at Liverpool approaches, recent games have proved that the German boss has finally solved one of the biggest problems in recent memory at the Merseyside club – the ability to bring on a substitute or two that can change a game when things aren’t quite clicking.

On the chalkboard

Klopp has been widely praised for the high-tempo style of play that he has instilled at Liverpool over his tenure, but it is yet to yield a trophy despite the Reds competing in two major European finals over the years.

However, the Gegenpressing system clearly takes its toll on the players and Klopp’s side have struggled to play every game with the same tempo in the past three seasons. This has not been helped by the fact that the former Borussia Dortmund manager has not had a strong enough squad to rotate players, and when games weren’t going well he had no impact players on the bench to turn to.

This season though things seem different. The signings of central midfielders Naby Keita and Fabinho allow Klopp to inject fresh legs at the heart of his team and former Stoke man Shaqiri has looked dangerous every time he has come off the bench in a red shirt.

The difference

As well as those options, Klopp also finally has a fully fit Daniel Sturridge available to bolster his strike force, which has been carried by Roberto Firmino for so long now.

Against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Sturridge started and scored Liverpool’s opener, before Firmino came off the bench to net a dramatic late winner.

The roles were then reversed against Sturridge’s former club Chelsea on Saturday, as the former England international was called upon by Klopp to partner the Brazilian with the Reds chasing the game with four minutes to play. Sturridge’s stunning strike then equalised for Liverpool, and proved just how important the bench will be for Klopp this season as he looks to end the trophy drought.

Tottenham fans react as World Cup hero Trippier is given freedom of Bury

Nobody outperformed Kieran Trippier as England rampaged into the semi-finals of the World Cup and he is surely a shoo-in for the team of the tournament.

Many were concerned about losing Kyle Walker’s attacking thrust down the right flank but Trippier stepped in with incredible results, providing a steady stream of chances with his expert delivery.

On top of that, he was imperious in one-against-one situations and shone in the right wing-back role, offering something of a positional dilemma for Mauricio Pochettino when he returns to action for Tottenham.

In a way that only the World Cup can, England’s run deep into the tournament captured the hearts of the nation and turned above-average Premier League players into national icons and Trippier was as popular as anyone.

That’s why he has been given the freedom of his hometown Bury – where England legend Gary Neville was also born – and we’ve looked at the reaction of some Spurs fans…

Liverpool legend ‘baffled’ by Lukaku’s Man United move

This summer has seen a lot of strange things happening around transfer announcements. From Roma confirming their new signing via FIFA 17, to Yeovil Town using a new Snapchat feature to declare their’s to the world and Stoke putting poor Josh Tymon on the spot with perhaps the most awkward of thumbs up you’ll see.

However, what has confused many is Manchester United’s new approach to their dealings this year, with the Red Devils having confirmed a deal for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, before a medical has been undertaken and medical terms agreed.

It’s not only the way in which the club announced the deal that has taken some by surprise, but the move as a whole has caused some confusion, namely to Liverpool legend Robbie Folwer.

The former Reds striker, who scored 183 goals across two spells with the Merseysiders, has used his column in The Mirror to question just how the move came about.

“I have to admit I’m baffled by Romelu Lukaku’s decision to join Manchester United,” wrote the former England striker.

“It’s a funny one, why would he want to go and play for a manager who has already twice deemed him not good enough, which is exactly what Jose Mourinho has done, whatever way he wraps it up.

“Ok, I get he’ll say he’s improved, I get he is no doubt a better player, but really? It’s a strange one for me, especially as this deal looks suspiciously like it is a last minute deal.

“Everyone said he was nailed on for Chelsea and they were quietly confident, United seemed to be in for Morata, so what has changed so much to persuade Lukaku to risk his confidence, reputation and future with Mourinho.”

The Belgian international, who made just three appearances under the Special One at Stamford Bridge before he was sold to the Toffees in 2014, has also confirmed his move to Old Trafford – again ahead of any full announcement from United.

While Fowler goes on to balance his argument stating that the former Chelsea youngster is an upgrade on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and that, given his age, there is plenty of time to iron out any kinks in his game, there is a strange air around the sudden change of tide, with the 24-year-old seemingly all but a Blues player once again just weeks ago.

Three reasons the Scottish Cup is vitally important to Celtic

Celtic launch an assault on their fourth competition of the season today with a Scottish Cup match against Albion Rovers at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie.

The Bhoys have already won one of those competitions this season and they’re also well on their way to another of them – Rodgers’ team are currently 19 points ahead in the Scottish Premiership, having won every game but one.

That’s the best domestic start by a new manager at Celtic in the club’s entire existence, just one of a number of ways the former Liverpool boss is making history at Celtic Park.

The Scottish Cup is the oldest trophy in world football and the Bhoys have lifted it the most times – a massive 36, to be exact.

It remains a trophy fans are desperate to win, but why? Why should Celtic take this competition as seriously as playing the likes of Barcelona in the Champions League?

Here are THREE reasons the Scottish Cup is still vitally important to Celtic…

Treble yell

Despite Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football, domestic trebles don’t come around that often. In fact, it’s only been done three times in their history; twice under Jock Stein in the 1960s and once under Martin O’Neill in 2001.

Rodgers’ spell at Celtic is already drawing strong parallels with Martin O’Neill’s run as Celtic boss and many fans are dreaming of a similar debut treble.

The 3-0 destruction of Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup Final in November showed that they mean business this season, and given they’re are also streaking ahead in the league, it’s only really the Scottish Cup that remains a big challenge for the Hoops in the second half of the season.

Can Rodgers emulate the likes of O’Neill and Stein? It’d almost certainly make him a legend with the Celtic support for years and years to come.

Unbeaten run

Celtic now have another goal in the second half of the season, self-imposed due to their unbelievable form in the first few months of this term: to go unbeaten in domestic football for an entire season.

The Hoops have won every single one of their domestic matches apart from one: a 2-2 draw away to Inverness in which the home side scored an equaliser in the last minute.

Celtic have only gone unbeaten in the league for an entire season once in their history and that was back in 1898 during a campaign that lasted just 18 games. They also went out of the Scottish Cup.

That means going unbeaten for the rest of the season would be historic, legendary and unprecedented. Motivation enough to try and pick up the famous old trophy while their league form is so good.

Tradition and history

As noted, Celtic have lifted the Scottish Cup more than any other side in history. It’s a point of pride that Celtic fans take seriously and the national competition has provided them with some wonderful moments over the years.

From 1965 when Jock Stein won his first trophy, to 1988 when the club won a double in their centenary year, right through to 2013 when the Bhoys defeated Hibs 3-0 in the final.

That 2013 victory was the last time the Hoops lifted the trophy and fans would love nothing more this season than to lift it again.

It’s a competition that’s been very competitive over the last decade with seven different winners in that time. For Celtic fans, it’s important to show why they’ve lifted the trophy so many times and re-assert their domestic dominance.

Back with a bang? Can this Arsenal star maintain his form?

Overtaken by Theo Walcott, vilified by fans of both club and country and made into a punchline by a media who simply think he’s more of a pretty boy than a top class striker, life cannot be easy for Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman’s a bit of a heartthrob, but that shouldn’t prevent him from being a top class striker. It may not be fair that he has the looks and the skill, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

The truth is that Giroud is a top class striker. He hasn’t got lightening pace or even brute strength, but, in a phrase made awkward by the gorgeousness of the man, he has a good body and knows what to do with it. Last season’s 17 goals in 25 appearances in a campaign that also included a broken leg shows that he really is a good player.

But the most important thing about Giroud is that he is a confidence player. It’s unsurprising that a man who spends just that much time on his hair would have a confidence issue, really. He seems to score frequently whenever he’s amongst the goals.

Most strikers are the same. They get a taste for blood when the ball hits the back of the net, and they can sniff it out after that. And this week against Denmark, Giroud started up front for France and within four minutes had found the net twice.

Not bad for a man who was booed off the pitch by his fellow countrymen after a poor performance in September’s international break.

But these two goals were gifts given to him by Leicester City stopper Kasper Schmeichel, who was in goal for Denmark that night. He inexplicably let Giroud’s first shot past him and it dribbled into the goal. Then he flapped at another shot and pushed it right into the path of the Arsenal striker to give him his second of the game.

France, since they are the hosts of Euro 2016, can only play friendlies until the summer, but were placed into a group so that they’d play in friendlies with the other teams in that group who were, in all the other games, playing for points. So it might not be the greatest of feats, scoring two goals that should never have been scored in a friendly against Denmark. But nevertheless he scored them.

The goals aren’t what should matter to Arsenal fans, though. It’s the confidence. What Wenger should be looking for from Giroud is a man whose knack for scoring goals takes him to all the right positions in the box, just as he did at the weekend for France.

Theo Walcott is not a natural finisher, but he has pace and a dribbling ability that Giroud could only dream of. What Giroud has, by contrast, is a finishing ability and a classy way of getting amongst the goals. These two things taken together are heaven sent for the Gunners because it means that they can make changes up front based on the game. Most teams don’t have that combination of qualities up front, but Arsene Wenger is able to completely change the way his team plays by making one sub up front. In other words he has the ability to turn the game on its head in one swoop.

But none of that is possible without confidence. When you have two strikers like that who can get amongst the goals, it’s hard to keep confidence high in both, certainly if you’re only playing with one striker. Egos are bruised by being placed on the bench.

But the confidence should be high in both Giroud and Walcott after the international break, and Wenger will be tasked with keeping both men happy. If he can, Arsenal are sitting in a good position for a title challenge, and there will be goals in their team.
