Championship Transfer Roundup: Leeds eye Colidio, Phillips update, Boro after Dijksteel

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday’s Championship transfer roundup divulged information on the fee agreed for Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who has now completed his move to Burnley, the price set by Arsenal for Krystian Bielik and Preston’s interest in Andre Green. Today’s edition includes Leeds’ pursuit of Facundo Colidio, an update on Matt Phillips and an improved bid from Middlesbrough for Charlton’s Anfernee Dijksteel.

Leeds want Colidio

Report: According to FcInterNews, Leeds are interested in Internazionale’s Facundo Colidio. Marcelo Bielsa is said to be a great admirer of the 19-year-old, who Inter value at between €8m (£7.3m) and €10m (£9.2m).

Verdict: The highly-rated Colidio is not just eyed by the Whites, but also by Newcastle. His career is only just beginning, and he is yet to even make an appearance for the Serie A outfit’s senior team. At youth level, he has a record of 21 goals in 63 matches – not bad, but not fantastic either. It was in the UEFA Youth League where he caught the eye in particular last season though, with him scoring five goals in as many games. Andrea Radrizzani’s Italian roots may make this transfer a real possibility for the Elland Road club. Either way, the Argentina U20 international is one to look out for in the future.

How likely is the deal? 7/10

Villa have not made Phillips approach

Report: As per Birmingham Live, Aston Villa are yet to make an approach to West Brom for winger Matt Phillips. It had previously been reported that an enquiry had already been lodged, but that appears not to be the case.

Verdict: This is a rare story during this transfer window: not only have the Villans not signed someone, but they haven’t even attempted to! In all seriousness, there is little need for Dean Smith and co to bring the Scotland international to Villa Park. They have already made 12 signings this summer and have several players who can play in the wing position. Phillips will be better served staying at West Brom. If the Baggies can keep hold of their best players, the 28-year-old may be playing Premier League football in 2020/21 anyway.

How likely is the deal? 4/10

Middlesbrough make fresh Dijksteel offer

Report: It is being reported by Football Insider that Middlesbrough have made a third bid for Charlton defender Anfernee Dijksteel. The offer is said to be in the region of £2m. The North-East outfit hope that they can sway the Addicks with this latest approach.

Verdict: Jonathan Woodgate and co are clearly determined to take the 22-year-old to the Riverside Stadium, which has prompted this latest approach. That is because they are desperate to bring in another right-back before the transfer window slams shut next week. Currently, they have just one available in Ryan Shotton. The Smoggies have a small squad overall, in fact, with just 18 first-team players to choose from currently. The next six days could be very busy for them. For Charlton, it would be a shame to lose a player who played in 33 games last term as they earned promotion to the Championship.

How likely is the deal? 7.5/10

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk shares training video from pre-season training in France

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool still have some hurdles to overcome before their Premier League opener against Norwich at Anfield on August 9th.

Before they cut the red ribbon of the 2019/20 campaign, the Reds will still have to face Olympique Lyon in a pre-season friendly and then the defending champions of English top-flight, Manchester City, in the Community Shield.

With that in mind, the squad is working hard at their base in France, with some of the new faces rejoining the team after their extended holidays.

Virgil van Dijk has been back with the team for a while now, and he took to

Van Dijk had a glorious 2018/19 season both at club and international level.

The Reds clinched the Champions League trophy after beating Tottenham Hotspur, and the Dutchman’s national side were unfortunately brought down in the final of the Nations League by Portugal.

Still, even with that trophy slipping through his fingers, he seems to be the front runner for the next Ballon d’Or award.

Celtic can add balance with Hatem Abd Elhamed signing

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Hapoel Be’er Sheva defender Hatem Abd Elhamed is on the verge of signing for Neil Lennon’s Celtic, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

Celtic are reportedly close to bringing a third defender to the club this summer in the shape of Abd Elhamed. Lennon has already signed Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo.

And the boss has spoken about his desire to bring more signings to Parkhead: “Right-back is a priority, but we have a number of positions I’d like to strengthen like midfield and one or two attacking areas.

“You don’t want to overcook it either, but we want to add to the quality in the squad that we already have.”

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Balance is needed

Bolingoli-Mbombo is an attack-minded left-back, a trait Lennon likes but wants to alter slightly, stating this week: “That’s something we’ll have to temper a little bit but you can see he can play left-back and left-wing.”

With the former Rapid Vienna man’s attacking tendencies, Lennon has opted for Kristoffer Ajer, a central defender, on the other side so far this term. Ajer’s defensive capabilities mean that he regularly tucks in, forming a back three as Bolingoli-Mbombo bombs forward.

Abd Elhamed played the majority of his 26 games at centre-back last season but is equally capable on the right-side of defence. Given his versatility (Transfermarkt say he has played seven different positions in his career), the 28 year-old could replace Ajer on the right, which would be doing a big favour for the Norwegian.

This would allow Ajer, who was fantastic in a central role last season, to revert back to his more natural position without losing the balance he provided.

With Bolingoli-Mbombo racing forward on the left and the attacking force that is James Forrest playing in front of whoever gets the nod on the right, it makes sense for Lennon to opt for a defender suited to covering inside. Abd Elhamed could do just that as well as providing cover for Lennon’s current crop of centre-backs too. A very sensible signing indeed.

Aston Villa fans fail to hide their excitement after Tuanzebe report

[ad_pod ]

Back in May, it seemed as though Axel Tuanzebe would be waving goodbye to Aston Villa for good.

The Mirror reported that Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was willing to give him a chance in the first-team next season but The Daily Mail seem to have given supporters hope of a return.

They now claim that Villa are set to launch a bid for the defender and hope to pay just £8m for his services.

Taking to Twitter, fans of the club were absolutely ecstatic with the news as one supporter claimed he was on his knees.

Another fan claimed it was a mouth-watering prospect whilst a further member of the Villa Park faithful simply hoped it was true.

One individual decided to focus on the potential price tag, suggesting it would be unreal for Tuanzebe.

The central defender appears to have been a huge hit at the club and despite spending a lengthy period out through injury he was hugely impressive.

In total, the 21-year-old played 28 matches in the Championship as he established a phenomenal partnership alongside Tyrone Mings towards the back end of the campaign.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Gamble: Aston Villa fans react to Tammy Abraham transfer claims

[ad_pod ]

Tammy Abraham was back in the Aston Villa line-up last Saturday and back among the goals too.

The young striker tucked away a penalty to give his side the advantage going into the second leg of their play-off semi-final with West Brom after a 2-1 victory.

However, Abraham has now emerged as the subject of a possible £25m permanent switch to the club, per The Telegraph. Currently, the 21-year-old is only on loan from Chelsea.

Having been in phenomenal form this season, you’d be forgiven for thinking Villa supporters would be delighted with the news. That was far from the case, though, with certain members of their fanbase sceptical about the magnitude of the transfer on Twitter.

One fan said that spending that much money would be a big gamble and represents a steep price. Another supporter claimed they’d rather the money was spent on Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings instead.

A couple of fans suggested they couldn’t see the deal happening, making reference to his parent club’s transfer embargo.

Abraham has scored 26 goals in 38 appearances for Villa this season, playing a monumental role in ensuring they’re still in the hunt for promotion.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Leeds United: Whites must reignite interest in Macauley Bonne

Ever since Jermaine Beckford left Elland Road at the start of the decade to join Premier League side Everton, Leeds United supporters have been yearning for a prolific goal-scorer.

Plucked from non-league obscurity in 2005, the forward made a slow start to life in West Yorkshire before finally making his mark two years later in League One by firing in 20 goals for the Whites as the club finished runners-up in the play-off final.

The next pair of seasons saw him find the back of the net on 65 occasions as he certified his status as a cult hero for the club by helping them achieve promotion to the second tier.

Although Leeds have had seen the likes of Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford threaten to repeat Beckford’s escapades this year, they may benefit from re-igniting their interest in Leyton Orient’s Macauley Bonne having been linked with a move for the striker earlier on in the campaign (via Teamtalk).

The 23-year-old has been in excellent form in the National League this season, firing in an impressive total of 23 goals which have played a massive role in helping his side move within a point of securing promotion to League Two.

An incredibly talented striker, there is no doubt that he could thrive at a much higher level and therefore Marcelo Bielsa should do all he can to snap him up in the summer. A similar type of player to Beckford, Bonne has a great turn of pace whilst his finishing ability has improved immeasurably during his time at Orient.

Although a move to Leeds would be desirable for Bonne, any deal could depend on the outcome of the current season.

If the Whites achieve promotion to the Premier League, the likelihood of the striker getting the necessary playing time in the top-flight will be extremely slim.

However, by missing out in May, the Whites could be better off in the long run as Bonne will arguably have a better chance to develop as a player and thus replicate Beckford’s success in the future.

What do you think Leeds fans? Do you think Bielsa should sign Bonne in the summer? Or should your club be targeting other forwards when the transfer window opens? Let us know below.
