Joe Aribo stole the show vs Motherwell

Rangers failed to return to winning ways as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox by Motherwell on Sunday afternoon.

Fashion Sakala got off the mark with his first goal for Rangers to put the club in front, but a second half equaliser from Kaiyne Woolery secured a point for the away side.

Motherwell only managed one shot on target in the entire match, compared to the home team’s 24 shots and seven on target at the other end. However, Steven Gerrard’s side were unable to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal.

Despite Sakala finding the back of the net, the Zambian forward did not quite steal the show for Rangers. Instead it was central midfielder Joe Aribo, who took his place in the midfield three after a difficult night out wide against Lyon on Thursday.

The former Charlton man was deployed as a winger against the French outfit and struggled to show his best qualities, but that changed against Motherwell as Gerrard placed him back in his more favoured central role.

Offensively, he was outstanding today. As per SofaScore, he created six chances, including two ‘big chances’, and set up Sakala’s opener. He also completed all four of his attempted dribbles and 76% of his passes. This shows that he stepped up in terms of creativity and was able to hand his teammates opportunities in front of goal, but Rangers were only able to make the most of it on one occasion.

Aribo was also not afraid to put himself about in the midfield and win his 50-50s. As per SofaScore, he won an impressive 69% of his duels on the pitch, coming out on top in seven of his 10 ground duels and two of his three in the air, whilst also making one tackle and one interception.

This shows that he stood up to the physical test of Motherwell and was able to hold his own. He was then able to merge that with his quality on the ball, with the aforementioned creative statistics showing that he put in a complete performance.

Rangers did not win but Aribo created enough chances for them to do so, which is why he stole the show ahead of other players. Gerrard must be buzzing with the midfielder’s display and hoping that the Nigerian can keep up a similar level of performance throughout the rest of the campaign.

Steve Cooper drops Forest transfer hint

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper has dropped a hint regarding his planned transfer business at the City Ground.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by Nottinghamshire Live, the 41-year-old Reds boss revealed that he would be open to bringing in further additions in the free-agent market, in order to bolster his side’s depth at centre-forward.

Speaking about the possibility of signing a new striker, Cooper said: “It’s obviously something that is possible because it’s within the rules and there will always be free agents around – people who might have missed out on moves when the transfer window was open.

“I think we have to be very clear about what we need, and why. We don’t want to make any short-term decisions, even though we want to make sure we’re as competitive as we can be in the upcoming games. It’s probably more of a conversation with Dane [Murphy] and about thinking forward.

“But, if I’m being honest, my real focus is on the boys who are in the building. That’s always my focus. How we can help them, improve them, guide them, and do whatever it takes to get them to be at their best. There’s no point thinking too much on what we haven’t got. Let’s focus on what we have got, and try to do the best we can.”

Fans will be buzzing

While Lewis Grabban did feature in Forest’s 3-1 victory over Barnsley on Wednesday evening, despite the fact that Cooper had suggested before the fixture that the 33-year-old could be out for a number of weeks due to a thigh injury picked up against Millwall, the manager’s decision to start right-winger Philip Zinckernagel as his lone striker in the match highlights the club’s need of greater depth in the position.

As such, the Welshman’s claim that he would be open to bringing in a fresh face up top is sure to delight Nottingham Forest fans, as, despite Grabban’s improved performances in recent weeks, as well as the impressive display of Zinckernagel against Barnsley, the fact remains that the club’s only two natural options in the position, Grabban and Lyle Taylor, have scored just four Championship goals between them this season.

However, as Cooper also suggests, the club must not simply sign a new centre-forward just for the sake of it, with the potential addition of an out of contract striker only being advisable if the target were to fit both Dane Muprhy and Cooper’s criteria, as well as being an upgrade on at least one of the Reds’ current options.

Thirteen Pakistan players sign central contracts

Thirteen out of the 27 Pakistan players offered central contracts last month by the PCB have so far signed up. Though there is a delay, the rest are expected to sign up soon

Cricinfo staff04-Feb-2009Thirteen out of the 27 Pakistan players offered central contracts last month by the PCB have so far signed up. Though there is a delay, the rest are expected to sign up soon. Some players, including category A seniors Shoaib Akhtar and former captain Shoaib Malik, have already signed the contracts. It is understood, however, that a delay in the formation of the central contracts review committee, has held up the rest of the contracts. The board formed a four-man committee, including chief selector Abdul Qadir, junior selector Mohammad Ilyas, chairman Ijaz Butt and former director general Javed Miandad, to review the contracts, particularly in terms of younger players they might want to put on a retainership. But the resignation of Miandad and the absence of terms of reference of the committee have stalled its working. Now, some senior players, it is believed, want to work out small details with Butt before putting pen to paper.”The rest of the contracts will be signed soon. We don’t forsee any real problems with it,” a board official told Cricinfo.

West Ham dealt Rice blow

Coming after star West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice turned down two new contract offers in the summer, it appears the club have been dealt another potential blow surrounding the player.

The Lowdown: Rice new deal saga…

Reliable outlets like The Evening Standard and The Guardian reported over the summer that Rice snubbed two fresh deal offers at the London Stadium and wished to be informed of any incoming bids.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-2/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Thankfully for manager David Moyes and co, Rice also didn’t try to force any move away and swiftly returned to action with West Ham upon finishing England duty and his personal break.

A silver lining at the end of what was some concerning news then, it appears West Ham may now be dealt another potential Rice blow as a new report emerges.

The Latest: West Ham dealt another potential Rice blow…

As per 90min, the Hammers and Moyes could indeed face a fresh challenge in tying down their star man.

Rice, who started 32 Premier League games for West Ham last season, expects the 2021/2022 campaign to be his last in east London.

While the 22-year-old would be open to signing fresh terms on the condition of a release clause, West Ham’s own rule of not including them in contracts for any of their players means a new deal is ‘unlikely’.

Rice is currently focused on this season with the Irons but has no shortage of suitors, with Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all making their interest known according to this report.

The Verdict: Key player, big money…

Making the joint-most interceptions per 90 on average last season (1.8), the England international is well and truly a key player and West Ham’s unlikelihood of tying him down could come as a blow.

It will certainly be interesting to see if he does in fact move on at the end of this season, but if he keeps performing at such a high level, potential suitors will need to fork out big money.

A £100 million price tag on Rice has been mooted while manager Moyes believes he is worth even more than that, so while fans will of course want to keep their talisman, an offer at or over that price tag would surely be taken under consideration.

Celtic: Brendan Rodgers reveals he wanted Ademola Lookman at Parkhead

Leicester City manager and former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he wanted to bring Ademola Lookman to Celtic Park during his time with the Hoops.

The Lowdown: Lookman’s Leicester move

Lookman, on £56,000-a-week with parent club RB Leipzig, sealed a late loan move to Leicester City on deadline day.

The Foxes have the option to buy the 23-year-old who Scott Parker described as ‘first class’, at the end of the season.

The winger began his career at Charlton Athletic, and it appears as if he was actually a Celtic target during his time at The Valley.

The Latest: Rodgers’ comments

Rodgers was talking at a press conference on Thursday, cited by Leicester Mercury.

When talking about Lookman, Rodgers confirmed he’s known about Lookman since he was just 15 years of age and admitted he wanted to bring the ‘top talent’ to Scotland.

“I’m really excited about working with Ade. He’s a top talent. I wanted to take him to Celtic when he was at Charlton. I was aware of him when he was 15. He has all the tools, he has a great dribbling ability, how he views the game, he has an eye for a goal. My hope is that this environment will give him a chance to flourish. Hopefully he can find a home here. I have no doubt the supporters will be excited by him.”

The Verdict: If only…

Lookman can play anywhere across the front three and has already racked up over 150 senior appearances, one of which came in the Champions League.

On that basis, you’d expect a versatile winger with Premier League and Bundesliga experience would have gone on to star in Glasgow if Celtic and Rodgers lured him to the club as a teenager.

However, it’s good to see that the Hoops are looking to build for the future themselves with the signings of youngsters Liel Abada, Liam Shaw, Osaze Urhoghide, Joey Dawson and Ciaran Dickson this summer.

David Norris believes Aston Villa are favourites for Todd Cantwell

David Norris believes that Aston Villa are in the driving seat to sign Todd Cantwell from Norwich City.

Sky Sports previously reported that Villa were expected to go after Cantwell should Jack Grealish complete his move to Manchester City, which was eventually completed last week.

Cantwell, who has been at Norwich City all of his career apart from a brief loan spell at Fortuna Sittard in 2017/2018, helped the Canaries gain promotion from the Championship to the Premier League last season, scoring six goals and setting up a further eight.

Should Cantwell make the move to Villa Park, he would be joining up with former teammate Emiliano Buendia, who made the switch earlier this summer, and David Norris believes that Villa are frontrunners for his signature, exclusively telling Transfer Tavern: “I think him being linked with Villa, it could be Grealish out, Cantwell in so that would make sense, I think that would put them in the driving seat for that one, good player, like him a lot.”

The Sun have claimed that Dean Smith may need to pay £40million to bring the midfielder to Villa Park but, after helping Norwich return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, it remains to be seen whether or not Cantwell will be keen on a move away from Carrow Road this summer.

For two sides possessing such hulking heavyweights as Graham Napier and Justin Kemp, the final of the Friends Provident Trophy appeared destined to offer big runs and lavish hundreds. And yet for all the power contained Essex’s lineup, it was left to Grant Flower to guide them home with a pitch-perfect 70, beating Kent by five wickets. It was the second occasion this season that Kent have reached a final yet finished as losers. Middlesex beat them in the Twenty20 Cup, a result which deflated the usually indefatigable Robert Key, and again today they were outplayed from the outset at a packed Lord’s.Six years ago, the domestic 50-over final was the peak of a county cricketers’ season. And although Twenty20’s attitude has seeped into batsmen’s mindset in 50-over cricket on occasion, the 2008 final was as much a throwback to the dusty old days of low-scoring one-dayers. And no bad thing that was, either. With Essex chasing what appeared to be a straightforward 215, Kent had fought back impressively to leave them on 161 for 5, still needing 54. The catalyst for this comeback was Robbie Joseph, the young Antiguan-born fast bowler in whom Kent have invested so much time, who produced the sort of blistering spell his supporters know he is capable of. Reintroduced into the attack after a wayward first over conceded seven, he trapped Ravi Bopara leg-before with a quick off-cutter and then caused Alastair Cook embarrassing indecision trying to pull, and then cut. The result was a bottom edge to short extra cover, and Essex had lost two of their big guns.At last, however, Flower found a similarly determined team-mate in James Foster to keep things under control, and the pair put on a patient 68 for the fifth wicket. With Azhar Mahmood and Yasir Arafat out of the attack, Key turned to Darren Stevens and Ryan McLaren who both bowled tidily enough, but their lack of venom allowed Foster and, in particular Flower, to keep the scoreboard ticking. Nurdles through midwicket, cheeky paddles down to fine-leg and a sweetly timed four off Stevens’ gentle drifters kept Essex and they never needed more than a vaguely-testing five-an-over.Foster, to his own outrage, fell to a loose flap outside his off stump – Joseph’s third wicket – but Flower soon stepped up another gear, reaching 50 from 73 balls and lofting Joseph over extra cover. Ryan ten Doeschate played a vital and infuriating role at the other end, running Kent ragged with daring singles out to cover, and he was typically elegant to anything minutely straight, turning them through midwicket with ease. Yet it was Flower who appropriately sealed Essex’s win with a clout over midwicket, and Kent’s 30-year wait to win a Lord’s final continued.”That was the epitome of a team performance,” Mark Pettini, the Essex captain, said. “Grant Flower stood out in the run chase, but the rest of the day was all down to the fight from the team. It turned out to be a nice toss to lose. My team were absolutely fantastic. We knew Kent would come hard at us, and the guys rose to the challenge really well.”If Flower sealed the win, then it was Essex’s bowlers who set up the victory-charge. Renowned as a frighteningly powerful striker this season, Napier has been more consistent with the ball than in years gone by, and bowled a fine opening spell alongside David Masters to upset Joe Denly and Key’s natural free-flowing partnership. On 7, Key tried to force Masters off the back foot but could only edge him behind to Foster, standing up to the stumps, who took an effortless snaffle – as is now expected of him. Martin van Jaarsveld, evergreen at 34 and the tournament’s highest run-scorer, nearly fell for nought lbw, but the same bowler found one to cut back sharply on Denly and bowl him through the gate.Essex were in business and had restricted Kent to a distinctly tepid 31 for 2 after 10 tight overs. Nevertheless, van Jaarsveld had his fellow South African for company, Kemp, and the pair set about calming Kent’s evident nerves with a patient, nurdling partnership of 39. It couldn’t last, however, and an equally frantic cut off Masters, whose unerring line outside off was a testament to the underrated control he has offered Essex this season, sent an inside edge cannoning into his stumps. Kent had slipped to 58 for 3.Panic set in, aptly demonstrated by Stevens’ fraught swipe off Chris Wright. Geraint Jones, meanwhile, threatened briefly with two crunching cuts before he was trapped by Danish Kaneria. Essex were on top through a disciplined bowling performance, but the shot selection from Kent was much less restrained.van Jaarsveld brought up yet another fifty from 68 balls – his third this season, in addition to four hundreds – but fell shortly afterwards to an outstanding catch by Cook, sprinting back from midwicket. And it was left to McLaren to salvage something for Kent, working balls through midwicket; back-cutting to the wider deliveries offered by ten Doeschate and nudging through the gaps with a coolness of temperament that his top-order team-mates lacked. His 63 was too little, much too late.As a hefty contingent of Essex fans roared their side on with victory in sight, Flower lofted the winning runs to seal their first Lord’s final since the B&H Cup in 1998. The 50-over lark may lack Modi’s millions, but Essex’s triumph was no less sweet.

Stewart: I think Henderson will sign new Liverpool contract

Former Liverpool player Paul Stewart thinks that captain Jordan Henderson will sign a new deal with the club.

Henderson has two years to run on his current deal which he signed in 2018, but The Telegraph are reporting that talks over a new contract have stalled.

Henderson has been instrumental in the midfield at Anfield, helping the club lift the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and the English League Cup. The central midfielder was also named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year in 2020.

Whilst contract talks have stalled, Paul Stewart told Transfer Tavern: “I think he’ll sign a new contract. I think him you know when we talk about Harry Kane and Grealish being one club men, he loves Liverpool too much to just walk away.”

Liverpool have made one summer transfer so far, that of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig for a fee of £36million and after losing one of Henderson’s midfield partners in Georginio Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, the club will be looking to replace him.

The Daily Mirror are reporting that Atletico Madrid have given Liverpool the green light to sign midfielder Saul Niguez, should a reasonable offer be made.
