Three players could be used in Pogba deal

According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Juventus could try to include three different players in a deal to land United star Pogba. The names mentioned are Paulo Dybala, Alex Sandro and Blaise Matuidi – however, it will be a question of one of the three.

Fernandes price set

Manchester United are very interested in signing Portugal international Bruno Fernandes, and Sporting Lisbon have set their price for the player according to Sky Sports. The Portuguese side are hoping to get more than £50m out of the Old Trafford outfit for the 13-cap midfielder.

Fortune and Wood take up U23s role

Quinton Fortune has returned to Manchester United to take up a role as an assistant manager to the U23s squad, working under Neil Wood, the club have confirmed. Head of Academy Nicky Butt will also take a more active role in the U23s’ programme.

[ad_pod ]

Friday’s Manchester United transfer roundup noted an update in the pursuit of a 21-year-old Newcastle midfielder, a prepared offer for a Turkish international and a Brazilian being scouted. Today’s edition brings you an agreement for a 26-year-old defender, news on a Portuguese star and a goalkeeper’s new contract.

United agree Maguire fee

According to The Sun, United and Leicester City have agreed a fee for England centre-back Harry Maguire. The Red Devils will apparently pay £60m upfront for the former Sheffield United defender, with an extra £20m to be given in add-ons.

Fernandes news

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been pushing to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes but is having difficulties getting the Old Trafford outfit’s board to increase their offer for the Portuguese international according to Saturday’s print edition of Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness). The sale of Paul Pogba would force the club to up the bid the report adds.

De Gea contract close

David De Gea is expected to sign a new contract once Manchester United return from their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia according to The Telegraph. The Spain international will sign a new long-term deal that will likely be worth more than £350,000 a week.

Aston Villa can land Mile Jedinak successor by sealing deal for Kalvin Phillips

[ad_pod ]

According to The Telegraph, Aston Villa are set to launch a bid to sign promising Leeds United man Kalvin Phillips.

 What’s the word?

Aston Villa’s preparation for life back in the top-flight seems to be going well so far after bringing back Anwar El Ghazi and also signing Jota from Birmingham.

However, their attention now appears to be turning to positions further back. They’ve triggered the option to buy in Kortney Hause’s loan contract whilst they’ve also been linked with a switch for Matt Targett.

One of the latest names to now attract their attention is Leeds’ Phillips. The defensive midfielder enjoyed a brilliant campaign under Marcelo Bielsa and could now be the subject of a £14m bid from Villa, per The Telegraph.

That being said, the same report suggests Leeds could demand up to £20m for the 23-year-old so it’s a deal that won’t come cheap.

Jedinak replacement on the cards

After the departures of Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak who were released, Villa will be in desperate need of someone who can sit and protect the back four.

Playing a midfield trio of John McGinn, Conor Hourihane and Jack Grealish is likely to be too attacking for the Premier League and therefore the addition of Phillips makes perfect sense.

Last term Jedinak was a bit part player but found himself featuring both in midfield and defence.

The Australian struggled when playing at centre-back during the opening months of the campaign but bounced back brilliantly in the latter stages of the term, even starring in that position after Tyrone Mings’ red card against Rotherham.

Phillips is a player who can also play at centre-back, having featured on 13 occasions in that position throughout 2018/19.

Although his favoured area is holding midfield, it’s a clear demonstration of his defensive discipline that he’s also been trusted among the backline.

Given the fact Jedinak played a very similar role last season, plotting a bid for the Leeds man is an indication of their willingness to replace him with a likeminded player.

£14m is a considerable fee for someone playing in the Championship, but he certainly fits what Villa should be looking for.

"What exactly are these positives?" – Arsenal fans fume at hollow words

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans have been left angered and appalled by the club’s powerbrokers after Managing Director Vinai Vekatesham and Director of Football Raul Sanllehi sent out a rallying cry to the Gunners’ staff in the wake of the demoralising defeat to Chelsea in the Europa League final.

Unable to halt the effervescent Eden Hazard, Arsenal were torn asunder as the Belgian added a brace to second-half strikes from Olivier Giroud and Pedro to complete the crushing 4-1 defeat in Baku.

The final disappointment comes after a brutally cataclysmic last few weeks of the season derailed an otherwise positive debut campaign for Unai Emery in north London.

The Gunners won just one of their last five Premier League matches to miss out on a top-four finish while defeat to Chelsea ensured that the club will be playing Europa League football next season.

With expensive flops eating valuable funds, a minuscule transfer budget and a lack of Champions League football, Arsenal supporters are not feeling very excited about the club’s future and many took great offence at the email which claimed there is “much to be positive about.”

Transfer Focus: Celtic can’t consider selling Jozo Simunovic when defence is chaos

[ad_pod ]

Spanish side Alaves are interested in signing Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

The Croatian centre-back has had his ups and downs at the Hoops over the year and this season has found himself both on the fringes of Brendan Rodgers’ first-team squad and a crucial part of Neil Lennon’s side.

The paper say that the La Liga outfit are keen on adding him to their squad this summer and could make a move with a £4m bid.

The interest comes with Celtic struggling for numbers at centre-back right now.

Dedryck Boyata has signed a contract with Hertha Berlin, while Filip Benkovic is due to head back to parent club Leicester City.

The seven-figure fee for Simunovic may prove tempting for the Hoops but they can’t think about selling him given the current situation.

Why so important?

The jury may be out on the defender’s long-term future at Celtic Park but the club simply don’t have enough time to sign the defensive bodies required to navigate this summer’s difficult European qualifiers.

If Simunovic left it would mean just Kristoffer Ajer and Marvin Compper remained at the club and the latter has shown no sign of being capable for selection.

A lack of forward planning has left the Hoops already behind when it comes to being well stocked in defence and selling Simunovic without replacements ready to step in would be a crazy move that shouldn’t even be considered.

Leeds United: Bielsa must start Shackleton in Forshaw’s absence on Wednesday

Leeds United have had a torrid time with injuries this season, haven’t they?

After heading into their play-off semi-final first-leg clash with Derby County on Saturday without the likes of Barry Douglas or Ezgjan Alioski, the last thing the Whites needed was to pick up any more knocks at Pride Park.

However, although Marcelo Bielsa’s side emerged victorious over the Rams, their worst fears where realised as Adam Forshaw had to be replaced midway through the first-half.

Speaking to LeedsLive ahead of the Whites’ return fixture at Elland Road in Wednesday, the Argentine confirmed that the midfielder would miss the game along with top-scorer Kemar Roofe who suffered a calf injury at the weekend.

Although losing Forshaw at this pivotal stage of the year will be a huge blow for Bielsa, the club’s push for promotion could remain on track if he decides to replace the 27-year-old with Jamie Shackleton.

Despite having no previous experience of play-off football, the Thorp Arch academy graduate produced an incredibly impressive display against the Rams after being brought on as a substitute by his manager.

As well as being very calm in possession of the ball, Shackleton’s outstanding movement constantly provided a threat for Leeds in the attacking areas of the pitch as he occasionally moved away from central midfield to the wide areas. Such was the teenager’s impact at the weekend, it could be argued that the Whites were much better when he was on the field when compared to Forshaw’s cameo spell.

Therefore, taking this into consideration, Bielsa must start Shackleton on Wednesday as he could prove to be the difference between the club playing Championship or Premier League football next season.

What do you think Leeds fans? Should Bielsa start Shackleton on Wednesday? If not, who do you think the former Athletic Bilbao boss should pick in Forshaw’s absence against Derby? Get in touch below.

Is age starting to tell on timeless Manchester City maestro David Silva?

[ad_pod ]

It would take a very brave person to write off David Silva so consistently sublime has the Spanish midfielder been since his arrival to our shores in 2010. Such is the notable descent in his performances in recent months, however, that slowly nerves are being plucked up and we’re now beginning to hear the highly unusual sound of criticism being aimed in the direction of a player nicknamed ‘Merlin’ for his magical qualities.

What jolts most of all is where much of this disparagement comes from: a Manchester City fan-base who idolises and cherishes their favourite son in equal measure. For close to nine years now the slightly built schemer, who boasts 127 assists during his time in Manchester, has conjured up an astonishingly high standard of creative football at the Etihad and elsewhere and this has won him plaudits far and wide across the game.

His peerless puppeteering has been unparalleled with a masterful appreciation of space and a supernatural capacity for knowing when to release the ball, and to whom, and at what weight. There was once mischievous a rumour going around that Silva misplaced a ball. Nobody believed it.

By playing such an integral part in three Premier League titles, and having done so with balletic panache, it cannot and should not be underestimated how beloved Silva is by the blue half of Manchester. Yet with heavy reluctance still the criticism has come; or more accurately a concern that the passing of time is finally starting to fade the player’s powers and influence on games.

Last Tuesday evening at Tottenham’s magnificent new stadium a great deal of responsibility was placed on their veteran star to connect a team set-up to largely contain with the forward forays of Aguero and Sterling. Not for the first time this season, however, the 33-year-old failed in this task and by doing so it left Aguero isolated and equally as anonymous.

Anonymity is one thing though, what really startles is the increasing habit of a player who for so long appeared to swish around in velvet slippers now passing with leaden feet. Away to Watford in December – in an otherwise immaculate display it must be said – Silva horribly misjudged a pass sending it to touch. It drew an audible gasp of shock from the away end. Now, witnessing such sights only prompts a grumble of annoyance so regular are they becoming.

Though his stats still bear up to previous campaigns – 9 goals and 12 assists this term should eventually surpass his overall contribution to last season – it should be acknowledged that most of his good work occurred prior to Christmas and with a dip in form now prolonged questions are being asked as to why this is.

Is age now impacting on a body that has put itself through over 28,000 hours of competitive football in England? Are the psychological effects of last year – when Silva continued to play through personal turmoil – finally taking their toll? Is rest the answer?

Sadly there is scant opportunity for the latter as the games now come thick and fast, each one crucial and must-win. As City embark on a potentially momentous month ahead, can they afford to keep relying on arguably their greatest ever player?

Transfer Focus: Manchester United eye huge move for Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale

[ad_pod ]

The Sun are reporting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United are lining up a summer transfer for Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale.

What’s the word, then?

Per the original report, the wantaway Welsh international is one of a series of names on the Old Trafford club’s radar for after the end of the season, already handed to Ed Woodward.

Bale is no stranger to United as the pair have met on numerous occasions, mostly during the 29-year-old’s time at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Before that, the left winger, who can also play out on the right or as a forward, progressed through the academy at Southampton.

He got his big move to north London in 2007 and then a switch to Madrid, where he has netted 102 times in 225 appearances so far, for a then-world-record-fee of £85.3 million.

Look beyond the name, a better option is out there

In this case, the Red Devils must look beyond the glitzy name of Bale as there is a better option out there, Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho – another rumoured target.

The former Manchester City man is a full ten years younger than Bale, so has the potential to be a key player in the north west for longer.

And if Woodward is seeking a left winger who can operate on the opposite flank as well as a series of other attacking positions in Bale, Sancho can do exactly the same.

The 19-year-old is as versatile as they come, able to play both right and left wing and essentially a much fresher version of the Wales star.

They both could cost roughly the same fee, meaning that there could be no significant increase on what they are prepared to spend on Bale, compared to Sancho.

This is a no-brainer if there ever was one for the Man United hierarchy, a chance to really think about the future and display to fans that a long-term vision is in place.

One would feel that, with plenty of other areas needing recruitment in the summer and without the bottomless funds of a Man City, Solskjaer won’t be able to sign both and he must make the right decision.
